Updating GPs look! Sorta...

What site are you on? Gamers' Plane? Gamers' Plane doesn't look like this... Why is the header more subtle, the footer more filled in? Wait, the header is sticky? WTF IS GOING ON?!

Yes, I've updated GPs header and footer, but more importantly, the logo! I really like the logo and I was given a lot of ideas for it that I'm excited to try out in time. But for now, I've started implementing some of the design ideas I've wanted to for a while. What do you guys think? Suggestions/feedback? Specially on the sticky header; what do you think of that? I wasn't sure if it'd actually be good or not.

I want to give the logo designer the credit he deserves, but I can't remember his Twitter handle, and I don't know if he's ok with me giving out his real name or not.

Like it so far, keep up the awesome work Keleth.

I like the new header!

Works fine on mobile. But header text could be bigger (for mobile). When you don't have new pm I think color of icon should be grey. (Now it is red).

The text is actually 25% larger than the text in the old header, so I thought it'd work a bit better on mobile. In general, some day I'd like to have a mobile version of the site.

Hey how about a gamers plane app?

I keep meaning to relearn app development, but the hard part is actually the design. I'm a good coder; I'm a mediocre, at best, designer.

Yup, looks great on my Galaxy S6 droid. Certainly an improvement, navigation wise. And it looks good, too. Thanks, Keleth!

I absolutely love how it shows your profile picture in the upper right corner. Nice touch! Feels a lot more slick then previously.

Instead of an app, a mobile-optimized layout would be better, IMO. Webapps are easier to keep up to date, doesn't take extra room on the device, and you can add a bookmark to your home screen and it'll look and feel like an app.

looks good on a Galaxy J7

I'm not as keen as others on the new header... the transparency is distracting. My more specific complaint is that when you click a "new post" because the header now covers the top portion of the *page*, it ends up covering the top portion of the new post (so you have to scroll down to see it properly).

.. EDIT and when you make a new post it covers the post you just made, so again, scroll if you want to reread your post (as I often do for post-post-edits in case I made an error)

You are right. Maybe make it shrink much more when you not on top of the site? And make it solid. I imagine something like menu bar in desktop applications.

The anchor for the pages just needs to be moved down (but I would prefer if it were solid as well, I find the transparency distracting... and the resizing). But I might just be a curmudgeon.

I like the way it looks, but I think I would like it better if it stayed at the shrunken down size and was a solid color. Other than that (or really, even without those minor things) I like it :)
Jul 12, 2016 12:41 pm
I'll have to consider the header always being small, but I made it almost completely solid. Don't forget I'm looking for feedback on the new landing page and the new home page.
Jul 12, 2016 12:56 pm
It looks good, but I think the footer should be the same pale grey as the header, otherwise it looks like you only half-committed to the change. Or it could be just me...
Jul 12, 2016 12:58 pm
I purposely left it a darker hue to add contrast. It didn't look good light. It is a different color than before though.
Jul 12, 2016 1:04 pm
Ah, ok. Still, it looks a bit... "mismatched"? Maybe adding a darker grey line to the bottom of the header the same color as the footer, sort of like the light grey line on top of the footer which I think is the same grey as the header?

Also, I just noticed how the logo shrinks when you scroll down... Nice.

There is a shadow on the header that I thought accomplished that, but I'll look again. I tried a solid bar on the header but I don't think it worked well.
Jul 12, 2016 3:04 pm
The shadow looks good too. I don't know, maybe the new look will grow on me...
Jul 12, 2016 3:31 pm
Change is hard...

I really, really, really like not having to scroll all the way to the top to hit up my characters or other forums!
Jul 12, 2016 4:50 pm
I like the sticky header, functionally. The look is also solid.

Change is scary, but I'm happy to embrace it. :)

ETA: I'd move the new-page anchor down under the head on a new post (per Candi's suggestion). Otherwise the sticky header covers part of the post and it feels a little meh.

I actually changed how the anchors are positioned; they're now 70px above where they are, which is the header's height.

I continually have to scroll up to read a new post in a thread -- are you not having that problem?

Windows, Chrome, here.

(specifically I have to up-arrow twice)

I'm not, and I use chrome too
Jul 12, 2016 5:13 pm
Hm... from my side it's fixed as well... I'll have to look into trying to replicate it.
Jul 12, 2016 5:29 pm
Works fine for me, and I'm using Chrome too.
Jul 12, 2016 9:05 pm
I'm very happy with this change, specifically on my phone. Having the header and footer available all the time makes it much more usable on a mobile device
Jul 12, 2016 10:28 pm
I dig the new look. Seems to load a bit better overall, but that may just be me.
Jul 12, 2016 10:51 pm
Looks great on my Safari iphone.
Jul 13, 2016 2:13 am
Issue for mobile: now it is impossible to navigate to PM's page if you don't have unread pm. (Impossible to hover over avatar)
Jul 13, 2016 2:29 am
You can get to it, Mihey. Hold avatar down until options appear, then back out, and should have a couple new options hanging off avatar. It is finicky, tho.
Jul 13, 2016 2:32 am
On my iPad (iOS 9.3.2) , tapping my avatar brought out a menu for Profile, Messages, and Logout.

I did notice that while the header bar was new, the logo was the old one. However, logging out, quitting Safari, and reloading GP seemed to work.
Jul 13, 2016 2:35 am
For my chrome browser when I tap my profile avatar, options shows up for second and I am redirected to control panel. Holding on avatar and backing out works for me.
Jul 13, 2016 2:53 am
I can change it so clicking the avatar opens the menu instead of opening your profile.
Jul 13, 2016 3:02 am
I think these are positive updates, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else you have in store.
Jul 15, 2016 10:55 am
The sticky header is useful, but I don't like the changing size, and the bigger size in general. On a notebook vertical space is always little for me.

I noticed the transparency, and though it does not bother me, it didn't win me over, either.
Jul 15, 2016 12:36 pm
Now, if only there could be a "Back to the forums" button at the bottom of the thread as well as on top... :D

Hey Keleth, is it possible to change a personal setting per account, to make the background of the website a darker color?

Not right now, though in the future, there will be themes.

I'd love a floating 'back' button of some sort that would flow with the page, so I wouldn't have to go all the way down or up to get there. But failing that i'd take one at the bottom for sure.

Note that I still have weird anchors for the links. I'll take some screen caps. Not critical.

I've spotted a bit of bug. Clicking on the Games anchor in the nav doesn't direct you to the game page, it just opens the dropdown.

I've tested it a couple of machines on chrome. Disabling JS seems to resolve the issue so I'm guessing it's something to do with the script to trigger the dropdown.

That's actually working as expected, the bug is that I'm an idiot who didn't include the "My Games" link in the drop down...
