Swamp Hobbits

Present in the Avanti Swamp (1), these backwater bayou layabouts are an interesting breed (1). Amongst themselves, they speak a patois of Halfling and Midland Common (1). Ranging from mudfarmers to lizard wranglers (1), Swamp Hobbits still exhibit the traditional Halfling characteristics of culinary excess and hospitality. (1)

Swamp Hobbits are one of the very few peoples that will cheerfully associate with the Bullywug (1), leading the less graciously inclined to snark that the Hobbits are half toad themselves (1). Indeed, cross-cultural influences can be seen in both the Hobbits' culinary inclinations and a peculiarly distinctive throat-singing tradition (2).

The fact is, the bullywug are not beneath taking an unassuming hobbit for dinner . . . but then again, the swamp hobbits are not beneath taking an unassuming bullywug for dinner neither (2).

This does not damper the swamp hobbit's natural candor and grace but instead makes them a sharp witted folk blessed with the gift of gab. (2) Their razor sharp threats can be missed, and woefully so, by ignant folk (1).

Hand carved bone flutes play jolly little diddies at family gatherings.

Family Gatherins are a quintessential feature of Swamp Hobbit society. As opposed to other Halfling societies, the Gathrin's main function is to redistribute goods to other families in the surrounding area. A Gat'rin may be called by any family member that is doing well for themselves and a feast will be had. The Family that held the last Gadderin earns a certain "'mount of 'spect" for the forseeable future.

I like it XD

The hobbits have stayed out of the conflict between Dragonwick and the Bog Elves. (1)

The hobbits are known to host, aid, cooperate, swindle, and rob members of both Dragonwick and the Bog Elves. (1)

The theme of the Swamp Hobbits is Opportunism. Swamp Hobbits have been exacerbating the situation indirectly between humans, bog elves, and bullywugs by constantly pitting them against each other. They are excellent guerrilla warriors and use the swamp to protect their interests and families.

I think they also have the theme of Reciprocity. In Swamp Hobbit culture, you get what you give.

"Ya getch whatcher give."

Opportunism and Reciprocity require good memories - for certain things, at least. While they don't have a complicated favor-and-debt culture, ever'wun knows who's been weedlin' more'n her share and who might jus' need a hand soon. A swamp hobbit might not be able to tell you exactly how the flood happened, but they surely do know what the gnomes and the elves owe each other and everyone else.

Saggry Foulbriar trades not only in trinkets, but gossip as well. He always has an ear tuned in to goings-on across the swamp, from his dealings with all of its denizens.
