The Circle of Wild Mages

Sorry, this ended up being more coins than I'm actually allowed to spend, but whatever, I wanted to complete the idea =p

The Circle (1)
-Chaotic Neutral(1)
-Wellspring Ritual (1) - Adepts of this organization seek out locations where the barrier between worlds has thinned, where they have the ability to create/cultivate Wild Magic Fonts. This is done by sacrificing arcane energy (expend a spell slot) in a ritual performed daily for one full lunar cycle (1). The same level spell slot must be expended each day in the ritual. The level of the Wellspring is equal to spell lvl/2 (1)

Wild Magic Font(1)
-Wellspring of Arcane energy - Any arcane caster who drinks from the well may restore 1 spell lvl per 2 spell levels used in the creation of the well(1).
-Causes wild magic disruptions in a 200 yard radius around the Well(1), as per Wild Magic table on PHB 104

Dispersed throughout (whatever our continent is called?) is a looseknit order of sorcerers. They have seen a rise in recent years in response and direct opposition to Grigori's rise to power.

The Well-Springs are also known to the Circle as "The Allmothers Birth Canals" (b/c of course she has multiple, she is the Allmother). (2c)

Those of the Circle who feel particularly in tune with the Allmother will climb into the Wellspring once opened in an attempt to find peace in the Allmother's loving Womb. (1c)

This is usually fatal. Even when it is not fatal, those who are rebirthed from the Font return to this world Changed (1).

The Wellspring Fonts function by essentially opening and reinforcing a crack in the planar fabric (1). Because of this, Fonts created too close together set up an unstable resonance between themselves, with random magical events scouring the land between the two points (1). These start slowly and increase over a period of weeks and result in the spectacular collapse of one or both Fonts (1). Magical effects/planar scarification may persist indefinitely afterwards (1).

Cid Gearweaver would approve.

The more high-minded of wild sorcerers consider the procedure of Wellspring opening a sort of planar acupuncture (1).

While normally solitary individuals, during moments of great import, not really on a set schedule, there will be held Circle Moots. (1) No two moots have ever been held at the same location. (1)

Jesse says:
This is usually fatal. Even when it is not fatal, those who are rebirthed from the Font return to this world Changed (1).
Those reborn from the Font gain a random elemental subtype and re-justify to the chaotic alignment, were they not already (2). The Changed may or may not return sane, but all come back with their own peculiar revealed truths of the Allmother (2). These truths have occasionally been known to be contradictory (1).

Wild mages draw their power by consuming the planar fabric itself. It's like picking up a loose thread at the edge of the tapestry and using it to stitch something new. Yes the pattern you create might be beautiful, but what have you unraveled behind you? (1)

Some people do not care about unraveling the thread and will use the connection to channel great power to the detriment of the closest wellspring.

If a wellspring is completely consumed in this way, the well collapses in on itself and a Sphere of Annihilation is created.

Quote:
Cid was a gnomish wild mage
Cid Orin, Wild Mage of the 1st Circle
Specialized in channeling his raw energies into the Wellspring Fonts to augment his spells and opened portals to the other planes. With his knowledge, charm. and illusions, he was able to infiltrate and learn many things. His Historical Hand of Fate pushed many of the technological advancements of the Gnomes both in House Orin and on Tinker Cliff. It also established the Wild Mages to be what they are to this day.

They are solitary and unpredictable to avoid Javed's psychohistorical divinations which can predict the movements of large groups of people but not individuals.

This is maybe a re-stating of what we've already touched on, but I was thinking about the Wild Mages the other day and it crystallized for me as:

At the bottom of a wellspring can be found a rare and powerful magical artifact -- the loose end of a thread in the Tapestry.
