Done and thanks

Rilyn Naor is close to ready! A psionic, spellfire wielding, non-traditional spellcaster. Haven't done equipment or backstory yet, I wanna do some more reading on eberron first.

All right, the characters who've been submitted have been approved. I'm only missing one from questionmark6, who has said the character is almost done.

Before we start, I want the characters to already be in an adventuring group. You all know each other and have a little bit of history together as a group. What is that? Ideas?

Well, Paris had been working for the Library of Korranberg as a guide for exploration teams. It's possible that one or more of the characters were involved in one of those expeditions.

Ara would go on a dig for extra credit, sure.

Xander is ready to go! He is part of the Church of the Silver Flame, so I can see him going along on expeditions to fight any evil they find and prove himself to the church

Ooookay, so we might have a bit of a problem...

I'm not sure how far off standard our encounters are going to be but we are super-squishy. We'll be stupidly powerful LATER, but right now, the cleric is our tank, and everyone else is a caster or ranged.

We have a squishy wizard, a squishy not-an-archivist-yet (me), a possibly squishy ardent (just going by current sheet) a not all that squishy cleric, the ardent could be tanky depending on the build, and the ranger probably doesn't want to try to be a wall between the the monsters are the squishy. Maybe we're not as bad off as I'm thinking, but...

Should I reroll something else?

I say we roll with it and see what happens!

The way I see it is if you have tanks, you use them to smash your enemies. If you don't have tanks, you overtake your enemies in a different way. Now, I know what a wizard and a Cleric are but I am unfamiliar with the Archivist as a character and I've never heard of an ardent. And I can't see the character sheets for either of them. I assume you can see Paris' cs.

Avron works with the Library of Korranberg, but spends more time studying than "out in the field" and has no practical experience.
His relationship with Paris would probably be similar to Will Ferrell and Dwayne Johnson's characters in the movie The Other Guys: Paris typically goes out on cool and exciting adventures as a guide, while Avron stays in the library and fills out his paperwork for him.

So, why would you want to play a paper pusher in a situation where it is likely that your character would see combat?

I'm not worried about having a "proper" mix of characters and character niches. I say we roll with it as is and see how it goes. If it requires adjusting later, we can do that. I can always tweak the encounters to the party, too. I don't think it'll be a problem. We're not in organized play so we can have fun with what we have.

Good question...
Perhaps Avron has learned everything he can at the library, or someone wants him to go out and get practical experience in the field... or they feel that his knowledge would be useful for an upcoming expedition.

The backstory gives a couple suggestions, ultimately the GM will figure out how it all fits into the storyline somehow.

I'm going to say that the group has been sent to a town called Red Larch as a kind of out of the way place to get some practical experience. The assignment is more busy work than an actual "mission" from any higher ups. It's more like the factions you're tied to said, "Hey, you need to get out of the classroom, go over there and see what's what." Not that you all need to be on assignment. Some of you could be friends tagging along.

Archivist is a divine wizard of sorts. Ardent I can see cuz it was linked up there somewhere.

As far I'm concerned though, I'm okay with a bunch of squishies as long as we know we're a bunch a squishies.

The reason I mention the unfamiliar characters is that in order for us to function as a unit we have to know each other's skills and abilities. Perhaps the trip to Red Larch will help us develop that understanding.
Nov 25, 2018 3:44 am
Yes, the characters don't need to be intimately familiar with each others' abilities. That will come later with more experience and levels. You just need a reason to be together.

Do we have an ETA on Rylin Naor, questionmark6? I'd like to kick the game off soon, if everyone's ready.

Does anyone else have any questions or concerns to address before we start?
Nov 26, 2018 4:29 pm
No questions or concerns from me, just excited to get started. This is my first time playing 3.5e :)
