Recommendation -- post your XP spend here...

Sep 30, 2015 3:49 am
Hey all,

I've reviewed a couple character sheets, and it can be a little hard to divine how points were spent during character creation. Since we're all new to FaD (and possibly to FFG in varying degrees), perhaps it'd be helpful if people walked through character creation/point spending in a thread -- you can create a new thread for your character if you want, or follow up as a reply to here. This can help us all learn and make sure we're not missing something or misreading rule (or if we are, that we at least all misread it together!).

So, a potential example might be:

Morality 50, +10 XP
Human - 2 in all abilities, +110 XP
+ 1 rank in each of 2 different non-career skills
Warrior, Sii-cho Knight

Brawn 2->3 = 30 XP
Brawn 3->4 = 40 XP

Athletics rank 1 (career 1/3)
Perception rank 1 (career 2/3)
Cool rank 1 (career 3/3)
Athletics rank 2 ( specialization 1/2)
Lightsaber rank 1 (specialization 2/2)
Resilience rank 1 (race 1/2)
Ranged (Light) rank 1 (race 2/2)

Parry Talent = 5 xp
Toughened Talent = 5 xp
Enhance basic Force power = 10 XP
Move basic Force power = 10 XP
Lightsaber rank 2 = 10 XP

Total XP spent = 30 + 40 + 5 + 5 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 110 XP

Though we already discussed mine I'll post it here for example sake as well. It was easy to mix up what skills you got for free at games start. Here is my breakdown:

Morality 50, +10 XP
Twi'lek, +100 XP
+ 1 rank in Deception or Charm
Sentinel, Shadow

Agility 2->3 = 30 XP
Agility 3->4 = 40 XP
Cunning 2->3 = 30 XP

Deception rank 1 (race 1/1)
Computers rank 1 (career 1/3)
Deception rank 2 (career 2/3)
Stealth rank 1 (career 3/3)
Skullduggery rank 1 (specialization 1/2)
Stealth rank 2 (specialization 2/2)

Slight of Hand (specialization force skill) = 5 xp
Codebreaker (specialization skill) = 5 xp

Total XP spent = 30 + 40 + 30 + 5 + 5 = 110 XP

[ Note to GM: I changed one of my skills. Knowledge (underworld) with skullduggery. It makes more sense to have skullduggery. ]

Awesome idea to post this stuff and I'm going to take it a step further by posting everything up to the XP spend point.

1. Determine Background
- Comfortable with Tech
- Pragmatic Power
- Fleeing the Empire
2. Morality
- Start at 71. No other gains.
- Mercy - Weakness
3. Species
- Human
- Brawn: 2
- Agility: 2
- Intellect: 2 -> 3 (gain from below)
- Cunning: 2 -> 3 (gain from below)
- Willpower: 2
- Presence: 2
- Wound Threshold: 10 + Brawn
- Strain Threshold: 10 + Willpower
- Starting Experience: 110 XP
- One rank in two different non-career skills.
4. Career
- Consular (Cool, Discipline, Knowledge(Education), Knowledge(Lore), Leadership, Negotiation)
- 1 free rank in three of these.
- Force Rating of 1.
5. Specialization
- Healer - One free rank of Discipline, Knowledge(Education), Knowledge(Xenology), Medicine
- 1 free rank in two of these.
6. Invest XP (110XP)
- 30 Cunning 2->3 (30XP)
- 30 Intellect 2->3 (30XP)

- Perception 0->1->2 (Human non-career skill choice - 10XP)
- Ranged-Light 0->1 (Human non-career skill choice)
- Discipline 0->1 (Consular)
- Cool 0->1 (Consular)
- Negotiation 0->1 (Consular)
- Medicine 0->1->2 (Specialization - 10XP)
- Discipline 1->2 (Specialization - Is this allowed?)

- Surgeon Talent (5XP)
- Physician Talent (5XP)
- Force Power: Heal (15XP)

So, as far as equipment goes, what type of stuff would a consular have?

Hmmm, totally missed that I could do that. I suppose I'd want to go with the Heal/Harm tree to match my other stuff. Cost is 15 though, so I'll stick with what I have for now. (Learn as I go).

I passed on force powers for now because I really wanted to up my base stats. Character creation is the only time you can add points into your base stats. Once those are set they are set.

Although technically Sleight of Hand is a force power, but a Specialization one.

Szemely,

Is your perception to 2 really 20XP + human non-career? Wouldn't it be 2 x 5 + 5 = 15XP? If so that might leave you with 5 XP left over for a 0-1 in a career skill?

Also, medicine from 0 -> 2 - you have 1 from specialization and then it's a career skill so to go from 1 to 2 should just be 2 x 5 = 10 XP. I think that frees up 10XP.

Yes, you can take Discipline to 2 (no skill can be greater than rank 2, but no rule against using your Healer + a bonus skill to get to 2).

So I think you have 15 XP remaining.

Remnant, did I get that costing right?
Oct 2, 2015 4:31 pm
Ah, I see what I did wrong. Was treating the skills like they were characteristics as far as XP expenditure.

For perception I hit rank 1 for "Human", so I think the jump to 2 would only cost 10. Either way, with 15 I will take the Force Power Heal/Harm and then break even (or have 5 left depending on the Perception thing).

Thanks for the help!

Because Perception isn't a Career or Specialization skill, I think it costs the extra 5XP (so 10+5). I could be wrong though!

Gang -- sorry this is taking time, but good to get our characters sorted. In other news my mom had some surgery earlier this week with some complications. That plus my business travel means I've been a little scattered this week! hopefully we'll get the characters finalized soon and we'll kick it off!

No worries. Such is the crux of play by post. Even in an extended time format like this life makes it hard to stay on it. I've had similar issues GMing my other games. :)

I agree don't rush on our account, I enjoy playing game and all but your life should take priority man. Better to take time for yourself and all of us to figure things out versus we jump in and get confused easily on what's going on.

XP expenditure breakdown. I assumed the +10 XP was added on top of the 110 human starter XP. Let me know if I got that wrong.

Edit: I swapped out the Move force power tree for the Enhance tree. Decided it made more sense for the character.

Morality 50, +10 XP
Human - 2 in all abilities, +110 XP
+ 1 rank in each of 2 different non-career skills (Discipline, Lightsabers)
Warrior, Aggressor

Brawn 2->3 = 30 XP
Agility 2->3 = 30 XP
Willpower 2->3 = 30 XP

Brawl rank 1 (career 1/3)
Melee rank 1 (career 2/3)
Survival rank 1 (career 3/3)
Coersion rank 1 ( specialization 1/2)
Ranged (light) rank 1 (specialization 2/2)
Discipline rank 1 (race 1/2)
Lightsabers rank 1 (race 2/2)

Toughened Talent = 5 xp
Intimidating Talent = 5 XP
Enhance basic Force power = 10 XP
Melee Rank 2 = 10 XP

Total XP spent = 30 + 30 + 30 + 5 + 5+ 10 + 10 = 120 XP

I don't have my book with me, but this looks good. The only thing I'm uncertain about is Coercion rank 2 -- is that part of the specialization benefit (e.g. you start with rank 1 and then took a spec skill to up it to 2)?

falryx says:

Typo. Corrected.

Coercion is a skill for the warrior specialization, so one of those could be the free choice for that, and then bumped to 2 for the cost. But I'm not quite sure where tuk placed those free ranks. Nevermind. He corrected it. :)

updated my post since not everyone can see character sheets.

Sorry for the delay; I'm doing my character work here.
Quote:

Each character should roll 1d10. Subtract from that number any conflict you may have been given by me (I would have done this through a note to you) and add the result to your Morality. Let me know if you have questions.

The following XP rewards are made:

Urik: 10 XP (this is at your discretion - I don't want you to fall too far behind the rest of the party, if you prefer to not take it you may opt not to do so).
Heyop: 10 XP
Dagger: 10 XP + 5 bonus XP for being a reckless/enthusiastic character who was very true to form.
Csillag: 10 XP
Kaveri: 10 XP

Kaveri - please also pick an emotional strength and emotional weakness (CRB Page #50).

Once you guys have had a chance to talk about what you're doing (and I'll give you some room to back-and-forth if you want) I'll lock the thread and open the next phase of the story in a new game thread.
I also had not finished my XP work from character creation, since I'd just used one of the starter set characters, who didn't have morality or talk about starting XP at all. Falryx has helped me with this.

Kaveri had a starting morality of 50, as usual. Then falryx tells me there's the 10 XP that comes with that, plus 10 for halfway, plus 10 for final adventure, for a total of 30 XP. Rolling for morality, emotional strength, and emotional weakness.

Kaveri is apparently a Hunter specialization of the Seeker class. This means that she has a few career skills that were not listed in the starter set version of her character sheet: Knowledge (Xenology), Piloting (Planetary and Space), which just means that she gets a discount on spending XP to gain these skills later.

I'm not really sure how the specialization talent tree works: do I have to choose one of the four "top" items as the start of the tree, and can then only move down, following the "path" or "branch" of that one tree? For instance, Kaveri's tree is on page 56. It looks like I could choose Rapid Recovery, Hunter, Expert Tracker, or Toughened. If I pick Hunter, does that mean I am in that track, and cannot subsequently pick Rapid Recovery? Or does it just mean that I could pick Toughened (5), and then, in order to take Toughened a second time, I would have to either take Rapid Recovery (5) first, or take Hunter (5) AND Expert Tracker (10) to "unlock" that second Toughened?

Rolls

Morality change - (1d10)

(6) = 6

Emotional strength, weakness - (1d100, 1d100)

1d100 : (74) = 74

1d100 : (12) = 12
