Out of Character chat

Hi all,
we can use this thread to discuss about the characters you would like to play, before getting started. Read the introduction thread and then think about a concept.

I love the concept I can play and alienist, private eye or anything else. What else is everyone thinking

You can play the character you most like, if you wish. Just write a brief biography and explain why your character is motivated to help Girst to find his missing child.
Realistically, the group will have a police detective as a NPC at least at the beginning of the adventure.

I've been waiting to see if someone else applied with their character, but so far only Lwunder and renegade4343 have provided a sheet/concept. As you two have done with the backstory we'll start.

Bing is a retired police chief in Greyton. He is sad that the police department has no more use for him. He is a Spanish-American war vet, lives alone in the family home. An amateur historian, is writing a county history and spends a lot of time at the library and the county records room in city hall. Still friendly with the police, but hasn't worked for a few years.

One suggestion for meeting up with Bing - at one point I think Michael said that he thought it a good idea to check in with the police, because they can be kind of territorial about their jurisdiction, and just let them know that we are investigating a disappearance and it led us here. I can't find that post though, maybe I never made it. We could assume that the police may not be interested in helping us directly, but perhaps Bing could overhear or someone could recommend talking to him as a source of local info?

We could either rewind and do that before the lighthouse, or maybe it is easier thread-wise to just proceed back to town after finding the footprints and a temporary dead end at the lighthouse (locked door) and do it now? What do you think?

I came up with two possibilities

1) Bing was the police chief in Portland. Michael and he have been collegues and are close friends. Bing was still active one year ago when Timothy´s mother comitted suicide. Actually that was his last case. That case shocked him because he is friend of the Gilbert family. Also, he felt there was something strange in that suicide. So, Michael thought Bing could be interested in give support to the investigators and find what happened to Timothy.

2) As Michael suggested, Bing could be former chief of the local police in Greyton. The investigators met him before going to the lighthouse. That could have been at the Inn the night they arrived. Bing recognized them as strangers and after a brief chat he guessed what they are here for and offered his help in the investigation. This is doable, but in that case, there are things about Greyton Bing undoubtely knows. I would need to open an introduction thread for that.

Either possibilities are fine, you are free to choose. Just consider that Kelly has to catch up with a certain amount of information about the previous chapter in Portland. Maybe adding more information would be too much to start with.

Peter and Lisa, any preference?

Not really. Thinking as a GM, I would say whichever gives him less relevant inside info. Reading your descriptions again, robertod, I think maybe Portland, it puts his ties to the case farther away geographically and it time. He has been out of the picture since the suicide, giving him more to discover along with us, and he won't know the people that we are planning to interview in Greyton very well. Maybe Bing moved to Greyton when he retired? That said, whatever you decide is fine with me.

Let´s go with option 1.
For the story and the suspance, I think it is better that all the group sets foot in Greyton for the first time.
Not really. After Alyssa´s suicide there was not that much to do for Kelly. No cues leading anywhere. Just a suicide like many others. But a gut feeling of something strange....
The case begins now with Timothy disappearance.

Given the complications of the case, Michael decided to involve Bing soon before going to Greyton and Mr. Gilbert gave his consense. Bing offered his help. He knew Alyssa, he´s very sorry for her and for his son.

At this point of the story, Mr. Edmond, Michael and Bing moved to Greyton. The investigations revealed that maybe the former Alyssa´s boyfriend, Jason Carson, is the real father of Timothy. Carson used to work in the same college where Alyssa was a student and Greyton is his hometown. Also, they found that Timothy was obsessed with a landscape and maked a lot of drawings of that landscape. The group found that this place is a lighthouse in Greyton.

Just to let everyone know, I will be on vacation in Alaska from June 8 through 16, not taking my laptop and will have limited internet available. Going to try to unplug somewhat so feel free to carry on without me during that time if you want. At the beginning and end, I may be able to check in.
