This is a little late, but I wanted to give props to Spinach for working Stellar Cartography into the plotline. Gave it that extra touch of TNGness. :D

I did quite enjoy that as well.

Can you explain why you feel the need to do that? Aren't you more likely to be able to RP appropriate things if you have the backstory already in your head?

I'm reminded of a story I once read about Dustin Hoffman preparing for the scene in "Marathon Man" where his character is tortured by Laurence Olivier's character. Hoffman's a Method actor, so he spent a couple of days not sleeping, doing various unpleasant things to make himself look gaunt and anguished and broken. Olivier supposedly said, "Good God, man. Wouldn't it be easier to simply act?"

Yeah, I don't know how much sense it makes for Stellar Cartography to just be casually using the long-range sensors during a crisis but I wanted to add in the reference, so I didn't even care

Yes, same here. I meant to mention my appreciation at the time, but I was probably trying to talk to six characters at once.

Thats exactly part of it. Its part of my method within TTRPG's. Sure, it would be easier to react and understand what happens over there if i am reading it, but to Marbo, that information is not accessable. Marbo cant open his third eye and see into the pirate vessel and keep tabs on Zephyr and whomever is with him, so if i dont read that, it keeps me in the characters perspective, and i cant unconciously influence my decisions on the Potential by something that Robb knows, but Marbo doesnt.

As a theater kid too, method acting seems to work best for me. Sure i can just "act", but when i did my monologue project (which was EAP's The Raven") I practised by candlelight at night. I put a metronome on my computer that sounded like someone tapping on a door with every beat. I even accidentally ended up sleep depriving myself (due to work, school, and theater, and dance), and i felt like when i delivered the poem, I understood the narrators position. Nearly mad due to a lack of sleep and constant tapping in the darkness of night.

And i guess i look at my characters in RPG's as acting. So i gotta play the part well

Holy crap that turned into a lot of text. Long story short: Its part of the method to keep myself in character. Deny any knowledge that marbo wouldnt have to prevent subconciously effecting my decisions as him, and follow the marbo method; Walk everywhere at work at a faster than regular pace, keep my posture straight, and when i sit to type, hear the mordin solus voice in my head. Except now its a mix of Mordin Solus and James Earl Jones.

Have you ever wanted to hear Saruman read poe? He has a whole damn series of it.

Wow, that's a very comprehensive and fascinating explanation, Robb. Thank you!

I approach it all from the perspective of a fiction writer, so I want as much information as is available so that, while my character is reacting to only what she knows about, I can choose from the array of possible reactions the one that's likely to be the most interesting to the plot or the one that provides the greatest likelihood of character bonding or conflict.

I love that you are a Method RPGer.

I think I actually still have the audio from this video somewhere on my MP3 player. I used to listen to it all the time

I did my best to explain it in a somewhat lucid and cohesive manner. I feel like i rambled a bit, but im running off of 45 minutes of sleep last night

I love the "Old gods" of acting, christopher lee, ian mckellan, Patrick stewart. Its all awesome, cuz like, they show up in modern movies playing roles they do so well in, but then they also have super strong theater presences, and you find other stuff theyve done and youre like DAMN

Really nice insights, Robb.

And yeah, with the old masters, I love seeing Shakespeare, especially. Like, there are a lot of good British actors, for instance. But when someone's in Shakespeare, it reminds me they aren't just pop culture figures. Even though, I suppose, Shakespeare was pop culture at the time.

The mental image of victorian english folk walking around like, quoting shakespeare like kids nowadays quote rap lyrics, is HILARIOUS.

I just realized that because of the translators, to Marbo, the entire ship sounds like a bunch of dolphins......
Mar 22, 2019 11:59 am
Oh my God, I didn't think of that. That's hilarious

Everyone find your dolphin noise and post! XD

What's an exhausted dolphin sound like? I spent five hours at the animal hospital last night over my roommate's sick cat.
Mar 22, 2019 1:52 pm
Nooooooo. Is the kitty okay? And are the humans okay other than being tired!
Mar 22, 2019 2:02 pm
The kitty is in kidney failure, possibly due to a mass in his stomach. The initial testing exhausted the $600 credit I was granted, so the hospital is setting her up with some resources and will promote a GoFundMe if she sets it up. I went home to feed the rest of the cats (my one and her other three) and she stayed there overnight. Apparently they overheard some of the things she was saying to me, which included expressing a desire for self-destruction, so they also connected her with some mental health resources.

Me, I'm just tired. :)
