Chapter IIa: Absolute Disaster

Repeating the procedure, Cass sends back the data pad with the message, "Understood. Please proceed to the coordinates I've provided. The ring of the gas giant should provide your ship with some camouflage. Under the circumstances, I can't leave my ship, so we'll have to beam you aboard to have our conversation."

Kendall grumbles, but complies.

Cass has Kendall beamed to the bridge. "Commander Shawna Cassano. Welcome to the Potential. We'll be in the ready room. Alert me if anything happens."

In the ready room, Cass offers Kendall something from the replicator and then sits at the desk. "Some hours ago, we responded to a distress signal from what appeared to be a private ship in trouble. It was actually a trap set by the pirates, who've been capturing ships and their crews for several months. We managed to escape, but an away team was captured.

"You walked in just as we initiated a trap of our own. The Antarctica is the bait. When the pirates respond, we will deploy teams to rescue the prisoners and take over their ships."

OOC:
Cass, what did you do with Kendall's ship?
Mar 2, 2019 3:36 pm
"Pirates, you say? There are scavengers typically around this part of space, but I have not seen many brazen enough to attack a Consortium vessel. This troubles me greatly.

"Do you know, by chance, who any of these pirates are, or at least who they claimed to be?"

Marbo continues to check the cylinders, hes on his 7th or eighth doublecheck, and the other people standing at ready are growing concerned looks on their faces. "Compressor, fluctuator, reservoir, safety. Check. Oxygenator, control valve, parts controller. Check." he repeats to himself, over and over and over.

Anybody standing nearby is most likely giving him a wide berth, as he hasnt stopped doing this since briefing everyone on proper operations of the devices, and ensuring that they all know not to use the maglock on their boots, as it will trigger hull sensors.
Moira smirks and speaks to Marbo. Her own tool belt bulges with various knick knacks.

Oi. Doctor. Excited?

OOC:
Sorry for taking so long with this encounter, folks. I'm a bit under the weather today. In answer to Kendall's question about what we know about the pirates, I'm going to quote what Lt. Mezron's research turned up earlier, because I don't see anything in it that would be so sensitive that Cass would feel wrong about sharing it, and this will make it easier than my trying to paraphrase it all.
Cass thinks briefly about what they've learned about pirates. It's frustratingly little. She decides to share what she has; perhaps this mercenary (because of course Cass has looked up Kendall F'breir before inviting her onto the ship) would have at least some hearsay information that could help.
bowlofspinach says:
In the time between chapter I and chapter II, Cass has received the information she had asked Lt. Mezron for. This sector of space has always had some pirate activity in it but it really started picking up four months ago. Since then, about three dozen privately owned spaceships have been reported stolen or missing in this area.

Even more shocking, in the same time frame, there have been three incidents involving small Consortium ships in this sector. Ten weeks ago, the USS Verdun, which matches the description of the ship you had assumed was the USS Sigma, was attacked by pirates. The ship’s warp core got damaged and the crew had been forced to evacuate the ship. They did not get pursued but when Spacefleet returned later, they did not find a wreckage.

Three weeks later, the actual USS Sigma, a similar but not identical model to the Verdun, was destroyed very close to your location. According to the reports, the entire crew, including Captain Ery-An, were killed.
Another week later, a small fleet of pirate ships attacked a convoy of trade ships led by the USS Antarctica, a Solar Class starship, much larger and better armed than even the Potential, which is well-known for being especially well armed for its size. The Antarctica succeeded in beating back the attack but one pirate ship had managed to attach itself to a convoy ship that was carrying almost a dozen Void Crystals and took it with it into Warp.

Lt. Mezron was unable to find any hint as to the location of the pirates’ hideout or the identity of the rumored Pirate Queen.

"Well, that is quite an interesting venture, to say the least. Well, what would you have me do, seeing as you obviously have some kind of plan in the works? How can I help against these pirates?

"Perhaps I go towards the wreckage imitating a scavenger looking for valuables?"

"To be honest, I really wasn't looking for your help. I just needed you out of the way so you wouldn't end up interfering in the operation or falling victim to the pirates yourself. I--"

She stopped, frowning. "You know, you look really familiar to me. I know we haven't met - I'd remember that - but... Are you maybe ex-Spacefleet?" But that was ridiculous. What little information they'd found on Kendall F'brei had not mentioned a career in the fleet. Still, that's where Cass' brain kept saying she'd seen this woman from.
Mar 3, 2019 3:30 am
"There has never been a Kendall F'brei on Spacefleet...ever." she says coldly. She tries changing the subject: "So, what the hell am I supposed to do up here while you wait for your prey? And how long are we going to wait here before I can go?"
Mar 3, 2019 5:12 am
Cass watches her reaction to the question, then smiles. "We have a variety of holochamber entertainment programs. You're welcome to use any that appeal to you. As for how long we're going to wait here... well, that's up to the pirates, I'm afraid." She shrugs. "I'm sure you can understand that I can't justify letting a civilian participate in an operation like this. As my acting first officer would say, it's completely against protocol."

She paused for a moment, thinking. "But just for the sake of argument, let's consider your scavenger proposal. What do you see that accomplishing, other than giving the pirates an opportunity to capture you and your ship?" With their current plan having so little margin for error, Cass was willing to use any resource available, but she needed to know she wasn't condemning a civilian to more or less certain capture or death.

Negative. Marbo does not get excited. Excitement may impede with the mission. Marbo is prepared.

He steps back from the canisters, and turns to face moira.

"Marbo may be a bit excited."
Mar 3, 2019 2:26 pm
Moira smiles. Yeah, me too. What in blazes is takin’ so long?
Mar 3, 2019 3:04 pm
"Don't worry, you'll get your shot at dying soon enough!", Darcy interjects, quietly enough that none of the other crewmembers overhear. "A ship has responded to the distress call. Private but not the pirates "
She steps a bit closer to you two to join your conversation, her phaser rifle slung over her shoulder.

Moira is unfazed. Ah guarantee yeh, Lieutenant, yeh dunnae wan’ta be in charge a’ that paperwork. So what’s tha Commander doin’ with our new friend?
Mar 3, 2019 3:27 pm
"They're talking. I dont know about what. If I was in her shoes, I'd keep my eyes on the mission instead of engaging some civilian.", she pauses for a second and you can see her bite her lip lightly. "Can I ask you something off the record, Moira?"
You don't remember ever hearing her call you by your first name. Or going off the record.
Mar 3, 2019 5:40 pm
Darcy glances around the room, checking if anyone paying attention but doesn't see anyone close by, except for Marbo. She leans in closer. "Do you still have that flask from earlier?" She's nervously biting her lip again.
Mar 3, 2019 7:01 pm
Moira lowers her voice.

Bold a’ yeh ta assume it’s just one. Why?
OOC:
I roll feelings to see what’s going on. This is weird. I’d like to roll "prepared" because Moira is used to having her guard up around Darcy, but if that doesn’t count, please disregard.
OOC:
I suppose it’s a bare-bones success either way.
