Chapter IIa: Absolute Disaster

The most senior officer left in the strike team is Lt. Hortam. He's a recent transfer to the Potential after he got heavily injured during an away mission on the USS Hong Kong, which is assigned to explore uncharted, hostile planets. He has recovered from his injuries by now, has combat experience from his previous assignment and you are not aware that he ever had any problems with insubordination.

When Moira hands him the rifle, he eyes her curiously. "If I may ask, ma'am, what happened to the Lieutenant Commander?"

RobbOgden93 says:
"Lieutenant, would you like a hug?" Marbo asks sincerely, but his tone is clearly a little strained as this is not something he usually does.
OOC:
ROFLMAO
Just before Kendall can pass on her information about the Star Flare and its captain, Cass asks the bridge security officer to confirm with sickbay when Darcy arrives and to keep her updated on her condition.

Cass returns her gaze to Kendall. "Sorry for the interruption. Lots going on. Please, continue."
Mar 5, 2019 6:31 pm
Darcy gives Marbo a death stare but doesn't reply. She pushes past him and he gets the distinct feeling that she does not appreciate the evaluation he gave to Cass.
Mar 5, 2019 7:30 pm
Kendall relays the information she knows about Star Flare and its captain to Cass. She then says, "Perhaps it would be of benefit to have me fly out with my ship in case he suspects that something is not right.

A distraction would take his attention off of the current situation, and maybe we can turn it into a win, if this plan of yours goes south. Say the word, and I'll hop into my ship."

Moira shrugs. We're under-staffed. Tha Lieutenant Commander needs ta be elsewhere.
OOC:
No use sharing her own hatred of Darcy's guts with the rest of the team. Not good for morale.

Thinking about it, Cass asks, "What's your sense about this captain. Is he more likely to be a pirate or a pirate victim?"
Mar 5, 2019 7:46 pm
"Understood"
You don't know whether he buys your answer or not but he does not pry further.
Mar 5, 2019 7:53 pm
Kendall thinks momentarily, and then says, "Honestly, I get the sense that this guy is an opportunist, moreso than a bloody-thirsty pirate. I think he'll scare off easily if provoked. However, my sense is that he is not beneath sharing with other pirates if it'll help him and his crew.

"Maybe a bait-and-switch to capture this guy would be best, in order to keep him from messing with your operation."

"That ship was participating in the trap we narrowly escaped from. Which means either the captain has been captured himself, or he's working with the pirates willingly."

Cass thinks for a couple of seconds. "If you show up acting like you're just responding to the distress call yourself, it's possible that the pirates will just see an opportunity to take another ship unawares, rather than a potential threat. And if there's another pirate ship waiting in the wings, maybe your arrival will smoke them out and we'll be less likely to get caught by surprise."

Standing up, she says, "Okay, let's try it. But don't just fly directly toward the Antarctica from this position. Try to circle around so that it looks as though you're entering the system from another direction. That should buy the Potential some continued camouflage." Before Kendall can leave, Cass says, "Thanks for doing this, Kendall. If we all live through it, you'll have what you requested from us."
Mar 5, 2019 10:40 pm
Kendall nods in acknowledgement, then heads into her ship. She keeps her shields up, and takes a leisurely approach, trying to do as Cass suggested to keep the Potential out of the sights of these pirates.
OOC:
I am going to roll Lasers to fly the ship in the manner described by Cass to deceive the other ship's captain.

I think she is prepared, she's an expert at flying her ship, but the result oughta change depending on if you think the deception requires Feelings instead.

You got Laser Feeling. What do you want to know?
Mar 6, 2019 2:19 pm
Cass, after your comm to sickbay you get a response. You don't recognize the voice as Dr. Zlam is not there and someone else has taken over for him.
"Sickbay to Commander Cassano. Confirmed; we will inform you when she arrives. What is the problem?"
Mar 6, 2019 2:31 pm
OOC:
I want to know (and take) the best approach such that the ship’s captain will not know that I came from the direction of the Potential.

"She's been temporarily relieved of duty after displaying signs of acute stress. Give her a medical and psychological evaluation and report back to me on her fitness for duty."

OOC:
I'll just combine your success and your LF into one here:
Kendall, you navigate the ship towards a gas giant farther away from the system's star and then turn around. You fire a quick Warp boost that barely moves you forward but makes it appear as if you just dropped out of Warp here. Your sensors indicate that the pirate ship's scanners have picked you up. You are certain that they do not realize you already were in the system before.
Cass, you get a confirmation from sickbay. On the viewscreen, you can watch Kendall's maneuver. The pirate's haven't reacted yet but you are pretty sure they must have already picked her ship up with their sensors.
Marbo, Moira, you can observe that the strike teams are starting to get a bit impatient. While the scientists and engineers appear pretty focused, among the security officers, there's a lot of talking and whispering, especially in what used to be Darcy's team.
Mar 6, 2019 3:27 pm
OOC:
Can I roll feelings to see if this is going to be a problem or not? I'm including prepared just in case, since I already saw her replacement's reaction.

You have a Laser Feeling

OOC:
I may as well just ask. Are people concerned for Darcy, or do they think there's a rat and they're mad?
Mar 6, 2019 3:37 pm
Laser Feeling: Some of these people have worked under Darcy Jr for a long time now. They're concerned, partly worrying about whether she is okay and partly wondering whether there's else something going on, but they won't make trouble. The morale was a bit better when she was still there but they trust Lt. Hortam as well and they are professionals, so it shouldn't affect their performance.

OOC:
Okay, cool. As long as they aren't railing. I'm sure all will be revealed later.
