OOC:
I don't know whether an hour has passed in game since Kendall's text message, but Cass is in the ready room, waiting for her.
Mar 13, 2019 8:03 pm
Kendall will enter the ready room, and seeing Cass there, she will say: "Commander, I have some good findings from my queries against their data stores."
Quote:
It takes you a long time but eventually you're able to crack the code that the pirates' computers use. It appears to be written in a trinary code that corresponds to their clicking language. Using the data from the universal translator, you are able to uncover the following information:
- The location that has been travelled to the most that you have found is an old abandoned Consortium research station that now serves as the Pirate Queen's palace and center of operations.
- You find what appears to be hierarchical charts outlining a simple command structure. The top position is named as "The Queen" with no name given. Other positions are ordered by importance but there are no ranks given, only names. The computer was unable to translate names so they are still given as trinary symbol combinations.
- You see lists of minerals, metals and other resources as well as names. Some of these names you recognize as traders, some regular ones, many black market.
- There don't seem to be any security logs or recordings of positioning on the ship at any point.
- The code they use is not able to interpret non-trinary code, meaning that it would not be able to detect a foreign virus or malware that is introduced into the computer if it is written in your language. However, such a virus would also not be able to influence the workings of this code.
- There are no medical files on the parasites on board this ship but you do notice that the parasites are always referred to as the crew while the hosts are referred to as meatbags, hosts or feeders.
- You find old logs by the real captain and his crew but they end a few weeks ago and the pirates apparently have not kept logs.
- One old file mentions something about "Unstable creatures, shifting their appearance, unsuited for attachment" as well as a location tag of a star system outside of explorer space, far beyond the pirates' main base of operations which is already far from Consortium civilization. There are no further details that relate to your search however.
Quote:
While your search does not yield any direct hits on sentient parasitic species, you find information about the Grall, a symbiotic species where humanoids are joined with a symbiotic life form. The two combine into one person and after the death of the hosts the symbiote lives on in the next host. While the relationship between host and symbiote ja very different there than it appears to be with these parasites you can still draw some parallels: The symbiotes' lives are valued much higher than the hosts because they live through many lifetimes. Similarly, the parasites do not seem to care too much about their host bodies. The symbiotes are also able to perform changes in the way their hosts' bodies operate, from changing hormone levels and organ operations, to over longer time even manipulating bone structure. It is reasonable to assume that the parasites would be capable of similar things, possibly even more than the Grall symbiotes.
"I think that these are similar to the Grall symbiotic race, if you've ever heard of them. We should really bring a xenoarchiologist or a sociologist to help us find a way to work with these things. Otherwise, we can just use biofiltering technology to slaughter them. It really is your call.

"What can I do to help you out?"
Mar 13, 2019 8:45 pm
Cass listens intently as Kendall delivers the results of her mining of the pirate ship's computer, even asking some clarifying questions and adding a few speculative comments. Whatever happens next, she wants to make sure she thoroughly understands the information Kendall has presented.

When Kendall finishes by asking what she can do to help, Cass leans back in her chair. "I'm glad you asked. I was doing a bit of research of my own, and I've come across something that I really need your help in deciphering. It just defies explanation. Take a look at this." She turns the screen around so that Kendall can see.
bowlofspinach says:
Cass, your search yields a surprising result: A spacefleet file shows up on your screen. The picture looks exactly like Kendall but the name reads Captain Karen Granden.
As you read through her history, you discover that she was always a bright and successful Spacefleet officer who climbed the career ladder quickly. During the last ten years you find a number of Mark's on her record accusing her of transgressions against Spacefleet orders and regulations but almost all of them have a note attached that says they have been dismissed in a hearing. Sixteen months ago, she took command of the USS Fortune, a small ship equipped for war that patrols the border to the neutral zone between the Consortium and the Naplicans
Cass gives her just a few seconds to take it in before saying, "Now, you've been extremely cooperative and a tremendous ally to me at a time when I badly needed one, but make no mistake - I will not hesitate to take any action I deem necessary to protect my ship and crew, not to mention Spacefleet. So I will ask you this just one time - who are you really, and why do you look exactly like Captain Karen Granden?"

Evil twin! shrieks a tiny voice in Cass's head.

Shut up, she tells it.

OOC:
Don’t go making sense now, Spinach! I won’t transporter the crew to death. I promise.
Mar 14, 2019 12:16 am
"That is a fair question, Commander. However, I don’t think I have the time or trust in you to share something so integral to my safety with you...not yet.

"I do hope you understand. Perhaps I can share a story with you...off the record...at another time.

"I hope that this short answer will suffice: though we look alike, we are inherently different people. And, I hope that your recent experiences with me have garnered trust and good faith with you."
Mar 14, 2019 2:26 am
Drumming her fingers on the desk slowly, Cass is silent for a while. "The problem with going with your gut is that it's not defensible at a court-martial. You've earned my trust with the help you've provided today, with the risks you've taken when you didn't have to. But the fact is that I recognized that something was off about you early on. I didn't act on it then because I had to prioritize the various elements of crisis, and you frankly didn't make the top of the list. But that was only because my gut told me you weren't a threat to the operation and that I could trust you.

"But finding out about you was shockingly easy, Kendall. It only took a simple image comparison. And I had no idea what I was really looking for. If Darcy were to find what I found - and she certainly might - she'll report it up the chain of command immediately. And she'll report my failure to do so. You'll be taken into custody. Or you could try running, which might work, but you'd be bringing down a ton heat on yourself. Whatever it is you're up to, I can't think that will help."

Cass sighs. "Look, you've got to give me something here. I trust you and I trust my gut, but not enough to put my career on the line - at least, not without more information. You telling me that you and Capt. Granden are 'inherently different people' isn't enough. If I'm going to keep this secret, I need to know what secret I'm really keeping."
Mar 14, 2019 8:06 am
Kendall looks down and shakes her head.

"I am not worried about that pedigreed whelp. People like you and I are hungrier, and hungry people are far more dangerous, and in far more danger."

She looks Cass in the eyes. "I worry for you, Cass. You are burdening yourself with knowledge that could lead to your demise. Are you certain you need to know it now?"
Mar 14, 2019 11:38 am
As you are talking, the ready room door makes a noise, indicating that someone is asking permission to enter.
Mar 14, 2019 1:09 pm
Cass is considering her answer when the door chime sounds. With a frustrated sigh, she says, "Come."
Mar 14, 2019 1:18 pm
Darcy steps into the ready room. She doesn't acknowledge Kendall and only looks at Cass. "Commander, the shuttle has arrived and the cargo bay is prepared. You can talk to the infected as soon as you are ready. Meet me in front of cargo bay C"
Mar 14, 2019 1:32 pm
Cass nods and says, "This data pad contains all the information Ms. F'brei retrieved from the pirates' computer. It includes the various locations the ship has visited recently. Have Mezron compile a timeline and transmit it to Capt. Tulak. "

Darcy takes the datapad and leaves the two of you to your discussion
Mar 14, 2019 1:41 pm
"We've put one another in an awkward position," Cass says with a rueful smile. "And unfortunately, I have a date with a pirate. We'll have to pick this up later. And we will pick it up later."

She stands, raises her arm in an "after you" gesture, and leaves the ready room to head for the cargo bay.
Mar 14, 2019 1:44 pm
Kendall stands and says, "Am I going with you, or do you have something else you would like me to do?"
Mar 14, 2019 2:12 pm
Cass sighs. "You may as well come with me. It will be easier to justify than telling you to run free in the ship. And I'd welcome an outside set of eyes."
OOC:
I spent ten full minutes trying to come up with something to assign to Kendall. It doesn't make sense for Cass to take her into this meeting, but I also can't think of anything else Cass could afford to ask her to do now, and I don't want to leave Hero on the outside of the action.
Mar 14, 2019 2:23 pm
OOC:
I'm assuming Moira is nearby for force field's sake.
As Cass comes to the meeting place, a face-masked Moira offers her the same protection. She does a double-take when she sees Hero.

Oi! It's tha civvy Lass! Yer gettin' yer money's worth, ah see. Stay in back with me, will yeh? Ah don't have an extra mask.
Mar 14, 2019 2:26 pm
Cass puts on the mask and looks around the cargo bay. "Does he suspect anything?" she asks Moira quietly.

You walk to the cargo bay and meet Darcy in front of the door. Two other security officers are standing next to her. "Commander", she greets you. Then she turns her attention to Kendall. She doesn't say anything about her presence but it is easy to tell from her face that she does not approve. "The pirate is sitting on a chair in the middle of the cargo bay. We have engaged the forcefield around his chair. We do not believe he is aware of it. There are four security guards posted in there, all armed. I will also be there to assure your safety, commander."
OOC:
Hero, I assume Kendall has taken off the phaser she had taped to her back by now. If not, Darcy would definitely comment on that.

Lav, Robb, it would make sense for your characters to be present as well. Moira could keep an eye on the forcefield and Marbo could watch over the medical condition of the infected pirate.
Mar 14, 2019 2:29 pm
OOC:
Sorry, I started writing before Lav posted hers but I guess it still works. What masks are y'all talking about? Did I miss a part of the plan?
