Chapter IIa: Absolute Disaster

"Commander, you have a responsibility to the safety of your current crew above and beyond the safety of potential outsiders.

"Regulation 2547.3 states as much.

"We cannot ascertain whether or not hosts can be saved. We ought to determine whether that can occur OR set out a defense mechanism prior to introduction of hostiles in your vessel.

"Let us set up a bio filter on the portal to halls from the shuttle bay that all life forms must walk through prior to getting to any ship access. Those slugs know what will happen if they try to penetrate it, and they won’t risk that subterfuge. The only subterfuge that may occur would be if they attempted to trick a soldier into lowering the field. Keep strict orders, and it should be fine."

"I'm responsible for the safety of the crew?" Cass says. "Man, I knew I was forgetting something! All joking aside, I like that failsafe. We have no idea what the parasite-infected host bodies are capable of. The next one might be even worse than razor teeth and acid spit. We can't take any chances of parasites getting to more crew members."

Cass looks at Marbo. She can't tell whether her words have gotten through to him, but she hopes so. "Marbo, from what you now know about the parasites, can you think of anything that could be used as a way to force a physical or behavioral response that would tell us that a host is infected, as Kendall suggested?"

OOC:
By the way, I just edited my response. Their skin pigment tells us. DUH!

OOC:
HAHAHAHA! Yeah, I forgot that, too. However, what we don't know is how soon that effect will be noticeable. So we could still be fooled, potentially, if the parasite can fake normal behavior long enough to gain the upper hand.

"Tell me commander. If your brain were disconnected, how would you tell your heart to pump blood through your veins, or your lungs to breath. Would you insist on being hooked up to a large machine just to live your life as a husk, unable to speak, eat, dance, command your ship, ever again?"

Marbo sighs deep and long, ethanol vapor escaping his collar in a larger cloud than usual.

Marbo will try to save them, but marbo is also going to work on developing a contingency. If Marbo discovers a biological weakness, Marbo will exploit it. Should the potential fall to enemy hands, Marbo will have preparations made."

"Marbo, you don't know how long it takes for the transition to be complete. You've never seen a host that's been very recently infected. I think you might be jumping to an unwarranted conclusion."

"Marbo could find out. By examining the trace slug dna inside the woman, and then the decay around where the brainstem was snapped, marbo would get a number of hours or days where the woman was still "alive'".

Cass claps him on the back. "Now you're talking! The better we understand this process, the more likely it is that Spacefleet can save other victims. However, you're officially off duty until Dr. Belka says otherwise. Instruct your medical staff on the tests to run on the DNA and you can look at their reports. You are under Dr. Belka's care. You can be released to your quarters when he decides, not you. Got it?"
Mar 22, 2019 11:20 pm
OOC:
Fine, moooommmmmmmmmmmm
"Marbo understands. MArbo does not like just sitting around though."

"Take up knitting. Think how many scarves you could make with four hands." Cass claps her hands together with a sense of finality. "Okay! We have a plan, and we have things to get done. Darcy, you will escort Dr. Zlam to the sickbay and have your wounds treated. I'll be checking with Dr. Belka to make sure you both do as ordered, so don't get cute. Moira, you get working on making us look dead."

Cass calls in an ensign. "As of now, Kendall F'brei is an Acting Chief Petty Officer. Please get her set up with some quarters and a uniform."

"Wow, an honorary rank. Thanks!"

Kendall rolls her eyes, but understands the need to be deputized at this point in time.

"Okay, so what are we going to do first?"

OOC:
Are you sure you don't want Acting Ensign? We'll tell everyone you're a boy genius in disguise.
Mar 22, 2019 11:49 pm
OOC:
Okay, I edited my post to give you Acting Chief Petty Officer.
Mar 23, 2019 8:04 am
OOC:
Okay, so Moira already made a roll to get the ship to appear dead. Darcy and Marbo are going to sickbay.
If you want to put your plan into action and move towards the location of the distress beacon, then just let me know who will be on the Potential and who will be on the pirate ship

OOC:
Can we assume that Darcy's treatment will be quick and she'll be able to participate in the plan?
Mar 23, 2019 8:20 am
OOC:
Yes, the acid burns are tricky to heal as shown on you but hers are much lighter and in an easier to treat location. Although she won't be fully healed by then, she'll be ready to return to duty in maybe half an hour. Even if you take off to the location of the beacon right now at normal Warp speeds, it'll take you more than that to get there

After finishing the meeting, everyone splits up to prepare. You'll meet again in a bit to clear up some more important questions.
Darcy and Marbo go to sickbay and after a while, Cass decides to follow them.
Cass, when you arrive at sickbay, you see Marbo sitting on a bed, doing some Marbo-thing. Two nurses are standing close by him and look as if they were stationed to watch over him to make sure he doesn't get up.

Darcy is sitting on another bed, the top part of her uniform removed. She's wearing a tanktop and the skin on her shoulder looks really bad. While her burns aren't bad enough to require artificial skin grafts, her shoulder is completely red and mostly covered in painful looking blisters. Doctor Belka is standing with her, scanning her wounds with a tricorder.
Mar 23, 2019 9:29 pm
Cass steps up and says, "How's the patient? Will she live to be reprimanded for deliberately neglecting her own medical needs?" Her tone is cheerful, softening the apparent harshness of the words.
Mar 23, 2019 9:33 pm
Dr. Belka turns to look at you. "She will be fine. Although it would have been better to have these wounds treated right away."
Mar 23, 2019 9:43 pm
"I think she was waiting to qualify for a three-for-one discount."
