Chapter IIa: Absolute Disaster

"Commander, can I talk with you for a minute?"

She pulls Cass aside and says as softly as she can while Cass can still hear her, "Do you think that we have someone on your crew working with the enemy? You don’t know me, but I would be willing to sneak around and subdue any remaining pirates aboard that ship. I put myself on the line for you already today. Send me back in (specifically to a remote area of the ship), and I can make it happen."

Cass holds up one finger to indicate "hold that thought" to Kendall, then addresses Hortam. "Send up to ten of the hostiles to our brig, including anyone who seems to be at a command level. Does the ship have a brig of its own?"

There's a few seconds pause before he replies: "No brig here, commander. I guess we could lock them in one of the crew quarters or a cargo hold"
Mar 9, 2019 3:57 pm
Cass nods. "Do whichever you can make the most secure. I don't want to risk them retaking the ship. Are there any prisoners on the ship?"
Mar 9, 2019 4:00 pm
"No prisoners, commander!" The communication stops for a moment, then his voice returns: "Ten pirates ready to be beamed into the brig on your command!"
Mar 9, 2019 4:15 pm
Cass notifies the brig to expect new prisoners, then gives the order to beam them directly there.

"Hortam, move the ship from its current position." She describes a maneuver that would place the pirate ship more to the side of Antarctica, closer to the Potential. "Let me know if you receive any hails or communications." If there are any compatriot pirate ships watching, this should smoke them out.

In the meantime, Moira is madly pacing, fixing and modifying anything she can, and not drinking. This is starting to get to her a bit. She's been in trouble before, but this is just too weird.

Moonbeam says:
Cass notifies the brig to expect new prisoners, then gives the order to beam them directly there.

"Hortam, move the ship from its current position." She describes a maneuver that would place the pirate ship more to the side of Antarctica, closer to the Potential. "Let me know if you receive any hails or communications." If there are any compatriot pirate ships watching, this should smoke them out.
After that, Cass grabs yet another data pad, gives Mezron the conn, and goes into the ready room gesturing for Kendall to follow.

She gestures for Kendall to have a seat, sits at the desk, and records a message for Captain Tulak. The message explains how Cass dealt with Kendall's unexpected arrival, how the gas dispersed into the ship worked as planned, and that they are now in control of the pirate ship. She explains that no prisoners were found aboard the ship, that ten of the 17 pirates are currently in the Potential's brig, and the remainder secured on the pirate ship. She asks Tulak if she wishes to house any of the prisoners on the Antarctica or participate in interrogating them once they are concsious.

Cass hesitates before continuing. "There’s an additional complication here - I no longer trust my acting first officer. What began as seemingly petty attempts to undermine my credibility - such as telling our bridge crew to wear dress uniforms during our meeting - has escalated to what seems to me to be subtly aberrant behavior." Cass describes Darcy's bizarre threat over the comm. "I relieved her of duty pending a medical exam, but they found nothing medically wrong, other than being slightly over the blood alcohol limit, and very angry.

"So while I feel her behavior is 'off' and personally threatening to me, there is no medical support for keeping her relieved of duty. I need an opinion from a ship's counselor to know whether Darcy is truly unsound or merely... not my biggest fan. If we could work out a way for your counselor to examine her, it would be very helpful. As you know, I'm running short at the moment on senior officers available to act as my first officer."

She calls in an ensign and tells her to beam the data pad to the bridge of the Antarctica. Then she turns finally, to Kendall. "Sorry. A lot going on. You were saying?"

"Do you think that we have someone on your crew working with the enemy? I find it strange that you have people trying to undermine you right at this particular time. Also, why didn't your crew do a sitrep of life forms prior to heading into the enemy ship?

"Perhaps I should stay on your crew for a bit, just to help.

"I had to kill a man today, in order to ensure that your mission was successful. I hope I have proven that I can be trusted."
Mar 9, 2019 7:39 pm
Cass leans back in the chair and notices for the first time how deeply tired she is. For a second, all she wants to do is fold her arms on the desk, rest her head upon them, and close her eyes. She shakes off the thought and contents herself with briefly rubbing her forehead with one hand.

"I'm sorry it came to that, and equally sorry that I was forced to drag you into this. As for the sitrep, we've been keeping our sensors stripped to the bare minimum in order to keep the Potential from being detected by any ships that answered the Antarctica's distress signal. Stealth was the priority over intel, since the gas was likely to take a majority of the crew out of the equation."

She pauses, debating whether to say what she's thinking, and decides, hell, why not? This woman, whoever she really is, has earned some candor. "Our captain is in a medical coma. We were on our way to a starbase to get him and the other afflicted crew members treated when we discovered this pirate operation. The man who would be my acting first officer right now was on our away team that was taken by the pirates."

It sounds crazy enough that Cass smirks a little. "Wait, it gets better. Darcy is the captain's daughter, who tried to paint me as incompetent to our admiral and asked him to relieve me of command. I made her my first officer because she's a security and tactical expert, and because I figured it was better to keep my enemy closer. I expected that her sense of duty would prohibit her from continuing to undermine me, but I clearly miscalculated. Her behavior makes no rational sense, unless she is mentally ill, or..." She doesn't want to finish the sentence, but forces the words out. "Or working some other angle that may include collusion with parties outside of Spacefleet.

"Now, I'm stuck with an officer I can't trust, who is plotting against me and possibly turning other crew members against me, and I have no evidence to justify taking action against her."
Cass leans forward, her elbows on the desk, hands clasped and eyes very serious. "Since most of my fellow officers are tied up with hull team and strike force duties, I'm in no position to turn down an offer to root out any possible compromise of my crew. It's important to understand - you're not working for me or my interests. My concern is for the safety of my crew, of the Antarctica's crew, and for the success of this mission. If you find something that helps me to ensure all of that, I'm all ears. What do you need?"

Before Kendall can respond, you get interrupted by a loud voice over the comm:
"Medical Emergency - Dr. Zlam to sickbay immediately - Commander Cassano, please come to sickbay - Security to sickbay immediately"
Mar 9, 2019 8:04 pm
"On my way. Kendall, with me. It will look odd if I turn you loose on the bridge under the circumstances." She gets on the turbolift. As the lift moves, she says into the comm, "What's the nature of the emergency?"

Kendall hustles, following Cass. She has a phaser at her hip set to stun. She says, "Commander, one second."

If Cass takes a second, she will say, "I saw this in a movie once. Strap this phaser on my back, where my neck meets my shoulders."

She then hands Cass some adhesive tape, and then makes sure that it is not visibly noticeable.

OOC:
Ooh, Kendall going full McLane...
Cass gives her a look. "Should I be concerned that you seem to be enjoying this?" she asks, but she does what Kendall asks.
Mar 9, 2019 10:05 pm
OOC:
Actually, thinking about it, Moira, you would have also been asked to come to sickbay, so please pretend you were mentioned in the emergency message as well
Mar 9, 2019 10:08 pm
OOC:
Aye, Spinach!!
Moira makes haste. She is not a small woman. Others should get out of the way.

Marbo pops up and to his feet almost robotically. He takes stock of where he is, and begins to run down the hallway towards the sickbay.

"Sickbay. Zlam. On my way. Status report?"
Mar 10, 2019 2:25 am
Moira coms about at the same time (though she doesn't know that Zlam contacted sick pay already).

Doctor, yeh up? Ah'm on mah way. Patch me in!

"Indeed. Marbos nap proved to be non-productive. Must make up for lost time."

Marbo taps his datapad to add Moira to the current Sickbay Emergency Message Evaluation Node and allow her to access the transcripts and other data transmitted over it, as well as adding Cass.

While you are all rushing to sickbay, you receive a message explaining what the emergency is: When the pirates were beamed over into the brig, eight of them were dead and the other two were dying. They have been emergency transported to sickbay and Dr. Belka is doing his best to stabilize them.
When you arrive, sickbay is in chaos, people running around, yelling over each other... A security team is standing watch at the door, Belka is leaning over the motionless body of a man in a cut open Spacefleet Command uniform. You notice Darcy standing at a medical terminal and talking with a nurse that's examining the other person, a woman in civilian clothing.
