Short version: The parasite does not disconnect the brain and body right away. It appears to be a gradual process in which the parasite takes over more and more functions of the host body. From here it seems that for the first two days of the merging process, separation is possible without big problems, although medical precautions need to be made. After that, it is possible to separate the two entities without killing the host for about five days, assuming proper medical care is in place to take over vital functions and retrain the body to take control again.
After seven days, the connections becomes permanent and the parasite can't be removed anymore without killing the host.
