Chapter IIb: On Your Own

Feb 22, 2019 2:34 pm
This is the thread for the away team that was left behind: M1-K3 and Zephyr
M1, you are still on the ships stripped down bridge with Ensign Myers and your hostage, if you want to consider the man that. You can hear sounds from outside the bridge that sound like an airlock. Someone is entering the ship and for whatever reason, they are not using transporters but instead are making the extra effort to enter manually.
The ensign with you lifts her phaser towards the door behind which the sounds are originating. About a minute later (Let me know if and how you want to prepare in that minute), three humanoid shapes in dark vacuum tight suits enter the bridge. They are all holding Consortium style laser rifles, aiming them at you but not firing right away. "Let our brother go and surrender. If you follow our orders, we will not end your lives!"
Myers looks at you, M1, silently asking you whether she should shoot or surrender.

Zephyr, you also hear the airlock sound behind you, outside the cargo bay. Lt. Felt looks nervous, his hands a re shaking as he lifts his phaser towards the door. You hear heavy steps in the corridor which abruptly stop right outside the cargo bay door. Two of the strange animals let out deep vibrating screams, as if to warn whoever is outside of your presence.
You hear a loud, heavy knock on the door and a coarse male voice, muffled by the door, yells: "Step away from the children, throw your weapons towards the door and put your hands behind your head. In five seconds, we will come in and shoot anyone who is still armed."
Felt’s eyes twitch between you and the door. With a shaking voice, he whispers: "We have a lot of cover in here and they’ll have to come through the door. We can take them!"
Feb 22, 2019 4:53 pm
"Children," Zephyr says almost to himself.

A sudden realization washes over him. They're not here for us, they're here to rescue their children.
Zephyr taps his communicator so that M1 can overhear, "Gentlemen, stand down. I believe these beings are just here to rescue their children here in the cargo bay. If we interfere with their assumed biological instinct to protect their offspring, they are likely to become even more violent than they already are. It's possible that their motives here are misunderstood, and that they see us as a threat."

At this, Zephyr stows away his tricorder and throws his phaser toward the door. Then after motioning with his hand for Lt. Felt to do the same, he puts his hands behind his head.

"We are not here for your children," Zephyr shouts through the door, "we are here in response to a distress call we received. We are unarmed and do not pose a threat. We offer our assistance if you desire it."

Feb 22, 2019 6:00 pm
The door opens and two humanoid figures, one much taller and heavier than a human, the other around human height, dressed in black vacuum tight suits step into the room, both wielding Consortium issue phaser rifles.

The larger one quickly steps between you and the "children" as he called them, which are still larger than even him.
He turns towards his comrade and lets out a series of clicking sounds to which his comrade responds in the same fashion. Your universal translator lags slightly behind in the translation, indicating that this language is not in the data banks and it is deciphering the language at the same time as translating. The large humanoid ordered the smaller one to "handcuff the prisoners", which the other one confirmed. He is now stepping towards you, Zephyr, holding out a pair of maglock handcuffs.

The larger one bends over the "children" lying weakly on the ground to inspect them. He turns towards his comrade and explains: "We must perform the procedure soon. We might not have enough time to return to the station."
Feb 22, 2019 7:15 pm
"What procedure?" Zephyr asks. "Are these your children? Also, where'd you get that rifle? It appears to be Consortium issue."

Now that he sees these two enter, he is beginning to doubt his decision to disarm himself. But if they are genuinely interested in the well being of the "children", then he was also morally predisposed to either not interfere or help them preserve life. Their true motives were yet to be seen however.
Feb 22, 2019 7:28 pm
"Stop talking, meatbag!", the smaller humanoid suddenly barks at you. He puts the handcuffs around your wrists and closes them, then he turns towards Felt, who holds out his hands for him with an unsure expression. He quickly gets cuffed as well.

The larger one reaches into his pocket and pulls out what appears to be a Spacefleet Communicator. He activates it and says: "Two meatbags secured. Ready to beam them into a holding cell. We will join Tox and then climb back into our ship. The children are dying. We need to test the meatbags as soon as possible."
Feb 23, 2019 5:18 pm
Zephyr doesn't quite know what to make of this situation yet. It's rare that he's rendered speechless, but this seems like the appropriate time keep quiet. He has gone a bit out of order by developing a hypothesis before doing much research or observation. Let's backtrack in the process and just see what happens before taking any rash action. Plus they're handcuffed, so what else could really be done.

Zephyr gives Lt. Felt a nod of stern confidence and then quietly considers to himself how they're going to get out of this mess.
Feb 23, 2019 9:08 pm
There is no further warning before you feel the characteristic sensation of a Consortium transporter and suddenly find yourself in a small room, not unlike an Ensign's quarters on a small Consortium ship like the Potential. It is completely empty, except for a simple bed. The replicator in the wall has been deactivated. Lt. Felt is not with you and you are still handcuffed. You can hear faint sounds from behind the closed door.
Feb 25, 2019 7:05 pm
Zephyr immediately looks down to see if he still has his communicator badge. If nothing else, at least he Potential will be able to locate him when they return.

His next thought is, "this is good." If they were going to kill him they would've done it already. Maybe they were going to put him up for ransom? Although the "meatbag" comments made him nervous, that could imply a lot of things. Maybe those two weren't biological creatures. Or maybe it was just some sort of barbaric nickname. Either way, it clearly indicated a lack of respect for his humanity.

But what made him even more nervous was the insinuation that he and Lt. Felt needed to be "tested." Zephyr's first thought from that comment is to assume that they may have been exposed to some sort of disease. Maybe the same that had sickened the "children." He'd rather be shot by a disruptor than be exposed to many of the known diseases out there. How could he have been so reckless to not have considered that when he saw the children lying on the floor. He was a damn scientist after all.

Approaching the door quietly, he puts his ear up to it to see if he can discern any speaking or other noises from the other side.

OOC:
I didn't think of it earlier but they would have taken your comm badge before transporting you.
Outside of your cell door, you can hear some voices but they don't speak your language. It's the same clicking language that you heard before but without your badge, there's no translation. Suddenly, you hear a human voice, female. You think it's Ensign Myers' voice but you can't understand what she's saying. She sounds scared.
Feb 25, 2019 9:25 pm
"I gotta find a way out of here," Zephyr says quietly to himself.

Surveying the room, Zephyr looks into what could be useful. The bed. Hmm...I guess maybe the blankets could be used for something in a pinch. Other than that, just a deactivated replicator.

A replicator. I wonder.

Zephyr approaches the replicator and attempts to reactivate it. Wiht tools it would be a relatively simple process, assuming it still has power. Wihtout them, I'm not so sure. Maybe I can just pop the front panel off here, and here. Then disconnect the red wire here, and bypass the molecular assembly transistor so it won't overload the circuit, like so. Then touch the wire to the conductive parallel plate on the capacitor. And voila!
OOC:
Edit: ok I got Laser Feelings. Can I get any idea of their motive here? Are we in real danger? Maybe I could've gleaned some sort of information on that from my walk to the cell.

Laser Feeling: While you are inspecting the replicator, trying to figure out if you can get it back to work, you think about what your kidnappers might want. You remember those "children" and how they were dying. You realize that something was also very wrong with the man you encountered on the decoy ship. And you remember what your kidnapper said about testing. You realize that they must be trying to save their children from dying to whatever it is that's killing them and that the cure is related to the people they kidnap.
You don't know exactly what the procedure is that they were talking about but you are convinced that you don't want to find out, at least not first hand.
OOC:
If you want to change what you want to do, you can. If you still want to repair the replicator, you'd have a partial success.
Feb 25, 2019 10:04 pm
Zephyr always liked tinkering. He did his best thinking when his hands were occupied with another task.

"I'm getting a bad feeling about this," he mutters to himself again while crossing two wires. "We're gonna have to find a way to stall until Commander Cass returns with the Potential."

Aha! The replicator should work now! He closes up the front panel, presses the button on the front, and says, "Phaser, standard Spacefleet issue." The replicator makes a sad bleeping noise, like an error has occurred.

Sigh. Of course. Spacefleet's safety protocols prevent unauthorized replication of dangerous objects, such as weapons and poisonous substances. Without the captain, commander, or chief of security to bypass the protocol, he wouldn't be getting any phasers out of here.

"Tea, English Breakfast, hot," he says.

Sitting down on the bed with his cuppa, he begins to think about what to do next.

You don't get to think in peace for long. It took you a while to get the replicator working again and only ten minutes after replicating the tea, you hear steps outside the door of your "quarters". Someone will be coming in just a few seconds.
Feb 27, 2019 2:22 pm
As Zephyr sits in his cell and thinks, an idea suddenly crosses his mind. These pirates are in the need of a cure for a disease, and he is a scientist. When they come back to get him, he will plead his case to let him help.

He approaches the replicator once again. Might as well keep his strength up, "Paglia e Fieno". His grandmother used to make this for him when he was a child, and it has always been his favorite meal. Might as well enjoy it again in case it's his last.

Lorq, it has been a few weeks since the attack on your ship. You have been serving for a few years now on the USS Sigma under Captain Ery-An and despite all the prejudices against your species, you managed to become the ship's doctor.
It had been a regular day when the Sigma responded to a distress call in an insignificant system. You weren't on the bridge, so you don't know exactly what happened but somehow, a boarding party managed to get onto the ship and took a large number of your crewmates captive, you among them. Since then, you've spent most of your time in one prison cell or another. You're only allowed to leave the cell rarely to help your kidnappers with medical exams on their people or other captives. You don't know exactly what they're doing to their prisoners but you've seen a number of your former crewmates join them, which usually results in them ignoring you and acting as if they don't even know you. You've also noticed that the entire pirate crew, including the people they took out of the Sigma's crew, seems to be stricken with some sort of disease. You've seen their conditions get visible worse even over just these few weeks. They turn pale, their hair goes gray and they grow frail, sometimes appearing as if they can barely stand upright. You've helped the pirates sometimes with decreasing those symptoms but most of the time, they rely on their own doctors.
Today, you have been taken out of your cell again and moved to the sickbay of the Consortium ship that you are held on. You have been told to perform the "standard tests" which means they have captured new people today. The standard tests are nothing complicated: a blood sample, a DNA test, hormone analysis...

As you reach sickbay, a woman is lying on one of the stretchers. She's wearing a Consortium uniform - yellow, to indicate security - but you've never seen her before.
Alex, after being taken from your ship, you've been moved to another Consortium ship of different but similar design. There, you've been held captive for a few weeks by now. Occasionally, someone comes to the room you're held in to bring you food but that's it. Today, you heard unusual movements outside your room and, most surprisingly, from inside the room next to yours. Someone in there appears to have been working with electronics. They have also been speaking to themselves - in your own language, even, instead of this strange clicking that the pirates use to communicate amongst each other.
Later, you even thought you heard a replicator noise from that room, but that's impossible. The replicator in that room should be shut off just like it is in your cell.
Suddenly, theres steps outside your room and not long after, the door opens to reveal a pirate in a full-body vacuum sealed suit that hides his face. He points a rifle at you. "It's time to get tested again!", the man behind the mask says very slowly, almost as if he has trouble speaking or is in pain.
You've been "tested" once before when you arrived here. Not that you remember anything. They took you to sickbay, gave you some sort of sedative and you woke up back in your cell afterwards...
Zephyr, the door opens and you barely have time to hide your replicated food before the pirate (it is the same large guy that you already met on the decoy ship, still wearing the vacuum suit) enters. He seems to not notice the reactivated replicator.
He's pointing a Consortium issue phaser rifle at you. "We need to test you, meatbag. Do not resist or I will be forced to stun you."
Feb 27, 2019 6:01 pm
Alex has been sitting on the simple bed with her legs crossed, trying to breath slowly and calmly no matter how badly she wants to pace. Which is pretty badly. Inaction has never sat well with her. A former colleague tried to teach her meditation techniques years ago, but wow, was that a failure...

When the pirate enters the cell, she slowly unfolds herself from the bed and stands with her hands up and open, as unthreatening as she can be. Honest. "I'm coming," she says with a friendly smile. "There's no need for weapons or threats."

Besides, this might be her chance to see who's in that next cell. With the way her crewmates have been treated, and the way Lorq has been co-opted into this crazy scheme of the pirates, any new allies would be a blessing.
Feb 27, 2019 8:20 pm
At least they're only considering stunning me, Zephyr thinks to himself.

Standing up in a cooperative fashion, Zephyr does his best to maintain an air of civility. "Listen, I can tell you need help. I am a scientist. It's my job to find answers to problems similar to yours. I even once discovered a remedy to a Fecataurine epidemic on our ship. A bacterial disease before undiscovered, which I got to name by the way. Please, take me to who's in charge. Let me help you."

Alex, you are being led out of your room. As you leave the room, you see another pirate standing at the door of the room that you heard the noises from.
That pirate suddenly fires his phaser rifle into the room.

Zephyr, the man shoots his rifle, not quite at you but close. Definitely a warning shot. "Stop talking and come with us. We have doctors! We have another use for you."

As you follow him out of the cell, you encounter a woman who is being led out of the room next to yours by another armed pirate. Together the two of you are led through the corridor

Time has crawled for Lorq. He fears that his crew believe him a traitor, but he is only trying to help. Everyone needs medical help when they are sick.

When brought to the medway to do the tests he speaks to his patients hoping to calm them down.
I am Lorq. The tests I am doing are harmless. I am just doing baseline testing. I fear however that some illness is stalking this ship. I am going to try and neutralize whatever has you unconscious. Maybe we can make some plans.
OOC:
I am going to do a medical check to see if I can wake them up. Hopefully it without a loud gasp. It would be expert and I feel he would be prepared for this. If you disagree feel free to drop the third die.

You recognize with one look that the woman has been given tranquilizers to keep her unconscious for the examination. You've done this procedure before, Lorq. You could easily give her a stimulant to wake her up. She'd be a bit groggy but awake. Your captors would not like that, though, unless you manage to keep it secret. With your roll (3 successes), you could wake her up without the pirates noticing - for now - if you want to go for that plan
Feb 27, 2019 9:30 pm
OOC:
I will wake her but keep a sedatives hand to put her back out if I need to.

Alex takes quick stock of the unfamiliar man being led out of the adjacent cell. This... this she might be able to work with.

"Stars, please don't shoot us. We're cooperating, please. We're exhausted... we are of no danger to you," she says to her captor before turning to the unfamiliar man. As they are led away, her gait demonstrates her words -- she does seem exhausted. She stumbles and falls against Zephyr, grabbing and hugging him to keep from falling.

"From USS Sigma. Is help on the way?" she whispers into his ear.

You complete the scans and don't notice anything unsual. She seems to be healthy, except for the mixture of tranquilizers and stimulants in her blood.

Laser Feeling: The scans that you're performing on new arrivals, the secretive operations they perform without your presence, the steadily worsening condition of the entire crew. By now you've pieced together that they're willingly infecting many of the arrivals with something that lets them control new arrivals to recruit them into their crew. And this infection also continuously makes them sicker

You give the Ensign a tranquilizer injector without anyone noticing. Although you haven't been allowed to test any of the infected crew, you're fairly certain that any tranquilizer that would work on a normal human will also work on them

Is help on the way?" she whispers into his ear.
Zephyr, catching the woman as she falls, is taken aback by encountering another Spacefleet crew member here. What in the hell is going on? This situation may be bigger than he thought.

He nods to her an affirmative, and whispers, "USS Potential." Helping her regain her footing, Zephyr says, "We best keep moving, the folks don't seem willing to negotiate."

"Chief Science Officer Zephyr Borealis," he says softly to her by way of introduction while walking. "I believe there is some sort of disease affecting our captors and they are searching for a cure. It doesn't seem like they have a solid grasp on how to find said cure however, and I have a feeling their 'testing' techniques could be rather barbaric. It seems that's where we're headed now."

Alex smiles ruefully, but there's a grateful look in her eyes as she stands back up. She tugs fussily on her uniform to straighten it and settles her shoulders back into a proper posture.

As the captives are 'escorted' down the hall, she replies quietly, "Lieutenant Commander Alexandra Lloyd. We've been here for some time... I've been 'tested' once, though I hardly remember any of it. Our ship's doctor has been pressed into service, but I haven't been able to talk to him."

Her eyes dart to their escort, and back to Zephyr. "I have tried to reason with them... stars know I've tried, but they will not respond." She lets out a shaky breath that belies her attempts to appear perfectly well put-together.

The two of you are being led into the ship's sickbay where you see a Meringue doctor leaning over a woman that Zephyr recognizes as Ensign Myers. He appears to be performing some standard health tests on her while two armed guards watch from a distance. One of them is human, the other is not but they are both very pale, the human more than the non-human who's skin has a light blue tint to it.
The guards look up at you for a moment but don't pay you too much attention.

Lorq, the door opens and two of your captors in vacuum sealed suits lead two people into the room. You recognize Lt. Comm. Lloyd. A man is with her, wearing a Spacefleet science uniform. One of the two pirates that led them here speaks to you in their clicking language that is quickly translated by his comm badge as: "Two more subjects to test. And be quick. The children are dying!"

OOC:
I will test the stranger first
If we speak quietly the guards usually ignore us. I see that you are a science officer. Are you from the same ship as the Ensign on the gurney...the Potential?
She may see unconscious but I have given her a stimulat. She is playing possum. I also slipped her a dose of sedative that should knock out one of our captors.
What ever they are doing, it is slowly killing whateverhuman they do it to. It is making them easy to control. I think the paleness and eventual death are an unintended side effect. Hopefully two minds will be better than one.

"I am a science officer, yes," surprised to be so plainly read, "and yes, this is Ensign Meyers, she is from the USS Potential, as am I. And you? You appear to be a doctor of some sort?"

Zephyr is once again taken aback by the situation he finds himself in. By no stretch of his imagination was he expecting to encounter another Spacefleet officer or any other friendlies on board. The odds are continuing to stack in their favor.

"Listen," Zephyr says quietly, "I don't know why you're helping us, but all we need to do is stall. My ship will return, and I have confidence that the crew of the Potential will be able to get us out of this mess. In the meantime, keep providing me with symptoms and other information and I'll try to see if I can identify any similar diseases.

How badly are we outnumbered? Any chance of fighting our way out of this? I've tried to reason with our antagonists here, but to no avail."

Zephyr, listening to the symptoms, you've encountered some diseases that are similar but nothing so far that's exactly the same. The closest you've seen for this progression is an infection with C'torran muscleworms, a parasite that eats away at the host from the inside, but the symptoms don't quite match. This would also not explain the way everyone appears to slowly go white.

Alex, the guards seem impatient. They're not necessarily aggressive at the moment but you feel they're going to break up your conversation soon to get the doctor back to work
Mar 1, 2019 8:28 pm
"Hmm, it's possible we're dealing with some sort of parasite here, but I don't have any solid theories. Keep doing what you're doing Doc, the natives grow restless. I'll observe."

Zephyr is unsure what can even be done about their current predicament from a scientific perspective. He may need to start thinking outside the box like Alex is. What to do, what to do.
Mar 1, 2019 8:38 pm
Lorq, you finish up the tests on Ensign Myers, who still pretends to be unconscious.

A guard walks up to Alex and Zephyr. He points his phaser rifle at them. The translator in his comm badge relays his clicking as: "Meatbags, lie down on the empty operating tables. We will need to sedate you for the tests. We will not harm you"
Mar 1, 2019 9:17 pm
Alex bows slowly from the waist. Keeping her eyes to the ground, she says, "This meatbag is honored to serve in the test, and humbly asks if there is anything further you might require of her, as her only desire is to serve and provide,"

In her speech, she tries to mimic any particular cadences, volume changes, or patterns she can discern in the clicking, especially from times the captors' words have been polite or apologetic.
OOC:
Not sure if that would require a roll, and if it did, whether that would be a Lasers or a Feelings. I'm guessing an envoy would be trained in picking up on language cues, but...

Edit: rolls added. I'm hoping to at a minimum to get a bit of confusion and hesitation, and hopefully a positive response that will give more information about how to proceed without violence.

Double edit: wow. That's some bad rolling.

Oh! I just realized I got laser feelings. So, um... what’s the best way to convince them to tell us what this disease is? If that’s a reasonable question to ask.
Mar 2, 2019 6:50 am
Laser Feeling: They are not going to tell you any more details unless they feel that for some reason it is absolutely necessary. They know that "meatbags" most likely won't consent to being infected with a parasite, so they're trying to hide what exactly they're doing. If you want them to give you more information, you'd need to somehow convince them that telling you will make things easier rather than harder

Lorq, they haven't allowed you to do tests on infected people, only on new arrivals before they got infected. Recollecting the type of data you have gathered for them, you are fairly certain these tests you performed were to establish whether prisoner and parasite are compatible.

Zephyr looks at Alex for a moment, and takes stock of his surroundings one more time. Then, attempting to lock eyes with Lorq, he lies down hesitantly. I guess the choices here are: comply or die.
Mar 3, 2019 8:04 pm
OOC:
if the tests can be done without sedation then I will just give each person a vitamin shot. If i have to sedate them due to the nature is the tests i will change actions a bit
Lorq busied himself getting "sedatives" ready. He prepares a standard vitamin shot for each person. Nothing that would give any help...just standard stuff. He also prepares more shots of sedatives to slip to his new allies.

Don't worry this just vitamin. Act unconscious but be ready in case a rescue or escape attempt materializes. I am also putting an injector in your pocket. That should take out one guard if the need arises.
OOC:
If I have to sedate them for the tests, then disregard the vitamin talk but i will still slip them an injector
Mar 3, 2019 8:17 pm
You don't have to sedate them but in order to trick the guards, you'll have to do a Feelings roll. You are prepared and you can get an extra die for help but it'll still be difficult. If you want to, make a roll, if it's too risky for you, I'll let you change your action
Mar 4, 2019 5:37 am
OOC:
Changing my action based on my laser feelings...
Alex bows from the waist and, keeping her eyes to the floor, says politely, "We wish to serve. To aid in your search. Nothing more. If I may humbly offer a thought in this spirit, we may offer far more service were we to know more about the tests. We could tell you of our own experiences while undergoing the tests, provide richer data. While we are kept in the dark, we cannot provide you with the observations that could bring you the answers you seek."

She pauses, and raises just her eyes to gauge their captors' reaction. "If it pleases you, I would volunteer to undergo the test without sedation."

OOC:
Edit: Aaaaaand another laser feelings... am I taking the right approach to get them to trust me with information about the tests? In other words, can I gain any insight as to whether being polite and humble is the appropriate tactic?

Laser Feeling: The guards seem to be on edge around you all, so showing them you're not aggressive and that you're willing to cooperate will put them a bit more at ease.
OOC:
I think Lorq already shared with you that the tests he performs here are just simple standard tests: Blood analysis, DNA test, etc. There is probably nothing to be learned from being awake during the tests and there will be no difference in the results if you're awake. You can still try to convince them to let you stay awake if you show you're not hostile, though.
Mar 4, 2019 6:57 am
OOC:
I will not roll to fool them. I don't believe it is important enough to risk the adverse effects. I will sedate them unless Alex wants to push it. I will slip them a dose they can use to knock out a guard.
Mar 4, 2019 8:55 am
OOC:
I'll wait to see whether Alex wants to change her action or not
Mar 4, 2019 2:57 pm
OOC:
I’ll keep my action. Regardless of the outcome, maybe it will show them I’m on their side, so to speak.
Mar 4, 2019 3:09 pm
The guards speak amongst each other for a moment, using their clicking language. It is not getting translated for you so none of you are able to understand what they're saying but after a few seconds, one of the gaurds turns towards you and says: "Female, you may stay awake during the tests but we will sedate the other meatbag. Doctor, begin!"

Lorq, you sneak the injectors into the other character's pockets, then you sedate Zephyr. Over the next hour, you take some blood and skin cells to run tests and analyses on them, you test muscle responses, eye reflexes, scan their brainwaves and hormone levels.
Alex, you observe during all of this. The tests that are run on you are not painful, the worst are minor electric charges to stimulate your muscles but even they don't hurt.
All results come back as normal. Lorq, you don't notice anything our of the ordinary with either of them but you notice two guards inspecting a viewscreen displaying the data and they seem to be excited about something. They are only speaking in their strange language without a translation, however, so you can't tell what exactly it is that has them excited.

Alex, Lorq, do you want to do anything else during the tests?
Mar 4, 2019 4:58 pm
"Thank you for the opportunity to serve," says Alex before she lies down to begin the tests. During the testing, she remains as calm and patient as she can, breathing deeply and slowly to help that along. Now that she's in the midst of something besides just waiting and worrying, she maintains her focus well.

When Lorq comes near enough to communicate, she murmurs, "Can we overcome them?"
OOC:
Rolling feelings to see if she's overheard.

Rolls

Feelings - (1d6)

Mar 4, 2019 5:14 pm
OOC:
They don't overhear you.
What you and Lorq notice is that there are four guards in the room, all of them armed. Not counting Zephyr, who's knocked out, you are three people (Lory, Alex and Ensign Myers, who's still pretending to be unconscious) and the only weapons you have are the tranquilizers. It wouldn't be easy to knock all four guards out without one of you getting hurt but it's not impossible, especially since they don't seem to have the intention to kill you
Lorq, you also believe that while the infected people might be slightly more resistant to the tranquilizers than normal humanoids, they should still work on them
Mar 5, 2019 12:31 am
OOC:
I will double check the results to se if any of these tests are different in any way from previous tests.

I hit my number. I check specifically if there is anything in the new tests that would make them better hosts.
Mar 5, 2019 5:22 am
OOC:
There is nothing in there that catches your eye. Your best guess is that they're looking for compatibility like you would with an organ donor, which would mean there's no general trait they're looking for. The compatibility could then only be determined by directly comparing the results of the human tests with those of the parasites.
Mar 5, 2019 3:06 pm
Zephyr begins to sort of flutter in and out of consciousness for a moment, and then suddenly sits upright in bed.

"But I don't want roast chicken again!" Zephyr shouts, "Last time we had roast chicken the waves were crashing on the shore. It was a lovely sight." Then, lowering himself back down on the table, he starts to slip back to unconsciousness. "Gas from Beranus..." He grins to himself, and then stops moving.

Alex murmurs to Lorq, "Stockpile sedatives if you can. I'll work with Roast Chicken over there on a plan to overcome them." She takes a quick glance over at their captors while they're distracted by the results of the testing. "Can you strengthen the tranquilizers?"

There's not a lot lying around that you can use but you do find a reactive agent that should make the effects of the tranquilizer a bit faster. You quickly add a few drops to each of the syringes. Just as you finish, a guard turns around and lifts his phaser rifle at you. "Doctor, female, you leave now. We will take the male to his cell in just a moment!"
He doesn't seem to have noticed you fiddling around with the tranquilizers.
Mar 6, 2019 4:49 pm
As you command.

Lorq leaves with the guards. His newfound hope of rescue makes him extra vigilant on the way back to where he is held.
OOC:
I will try and get an idea of numbers against us and any other pertinent info.
Mar 6, 2019 4:54 pm
Alex rises slowly from where she has been undergoing testing. Again, she bows from the waist, and says in a calm, measured tone, "May it please you, the male may be confused and possibly even agitated when he wakes from his sedation. As I only wish to serve and help with the testing, I would not want conflict to arise. If I am present when he wakes, I can help him remain calm and see the importance of service."

She remains bowed while she awaits an answer.
OOC:
Going to roll an expert feelings to see if I can be extra convincing...

Laser Feeling: They have found Zephyr suited for infection and are planning to infect him once you're gone.

Do you want to change action or keep it this way?
Mar 6, 2019 7:10 pm
OOC:
Keep it the same. Fingers crossed.
Mar 6, 2019 7:36 pm
"He will wake up in his cell. There is no need for you to observe, meatbag!"
The guards seem to appreciate the way you're acting so they lower their guard and don't aim their rifles at you anymore but they're still insisting that you leave.
Mar 6, 2019 10:33 pm
There's a long pause before Alex responds. She looks silently from Zephyr to the guards, draws a deep breath, and nods. "Of course. If I may be of additional assistance, it would be an honor for this one to serve," she says, though a bit of an edge creeps into her voice that wasn't there before.

She moves toward the door, expecting to be escorted back.
Mar 7, 2019 4:44 am
A guard leads you away to your cell. They seem relaxed around you but they still keep an eye on you.
Lorq, you are also being escorted to your cell.

Are you planning on doing anything during the next hour after being taken back?

Mar 7, 2019 5:29 am
OOC:
You're both locked in crew quarters. You could probably get up to your respective doors and shout and be able to hear each other but almost certainly, guards would be able to overhear everything you say.
Mar 7, 2019 6:03 am
Returned to her cell, Alex drops her patient servant act and irritably paces the perimeter of the space, muttering under her breath all the way. Suddenly she comes to a stop, turns to the wall and slams her open palms against it.

She lets out a deep sigh and leans her forehead against the wall. With nothing left to do, she turns and slides down the wall to sit on the bed.
OOC:
No other plans, other than racking her brain for ideas.
Mar 7, 2019 6:45 pm
After a while, both of you would hear heavy steps in the corridor outside your cells. Alex, you hear the door to the room next to you in which Zephyr was kept open and the steps enter it. A moment later, the steps exit the room, the door closes and they walk off.
Zephyr, you wake up back in the room that you were in before you got taken to the medical exam. You feel a bit groggy, most likely from the anesthesia, but otherwise you feel fine. The replicator in the room is still working. Your captors seem to have not noticed that you fixed it.
Mar 8, 2019 1:30 am
Once it sounds like the guards are gone, Alex waits a minute before knocking on the wall between her room and Zephyr’s. She waits to see if there’s a response before she speaks.
Mar 8, 2019 3:55 pm
Zephyr, feeling groggy, makes himself another tea in the replicator. When he first hears a knocking on the wall theres a moment of confusion. Then he remembers.

"Alex?" he says, "can you hear me?"

Zephyr knocks on the wall twice in response in case his voice can't be heard.
Mar 8, 2019 3:59 pm
Alex, Zephyr, when you talk, you can just barely understand each other
Mar 8, 2019 6:10 pm
Some of the tension leaves Alex as she hears the response from next door, her shoulders relaxing. "Barely," she responds, speaking more slowly and a little bit louder. "Are you all right?"

She stays by the wall so she can hopefully make out his response, but she starts looking over the room to see if there's anything she might be able to co-opt for better communication.
Mar 8, 2019 6:59 pm
OOC:
There's a room to room communication system but it has been disabled as well. You could try to fix it but everyone would have to do some repairs in their own room in order to make it work there
Mar 8, 2019 7:29 pm
"I'm feeling fine, all things considered." Zephyr rubs his head while sitting on his cot. "Let me see if I can get this communications system up and running. It might make us less likely to be overheard. Sure would be nice if we had our comm badges."

Zephyr pulls the panel off the wall and makes an attempt to rewire things.

"You'll have to do the same on your end though. If you can't get it, we'll just be discreet."

After fiddling with the systems, Zephyr communicates with Alex in whichever route is the available.

"Listen, I think we need to just wait things out here. Commander Cassano will be back for us after she is able to regroup, I'm sure of it. That being said though, I was able to get my replicator working. If you have any ideas of how we could use that to our advantage let me know.

Also, I watched Lorq's procedure pretty carefully when he was 'testing' us. I have my concerns about the process they're using to run these tests. If we get the opportunity in the future, I'd like to run my own diagnostics on everyone that has been on this ship or exposed to the children. Just to be safe."

Alex chooses not to betray her fears that Zephyr's been infected, at least not yet. But the strain around her features as she listens to Zephyr's response says a lot about just what's going through her head.

"Electronics have never been my thing, but I'll try."

Likewise, in whatever way is most available, Alex responds. "Lorq was able to strengthen the sedatives to where we think they should work on the guards. Where that would get us, I'm not certain. Do you know how many others we might have to take down if we revolt?"

She adds after a brief pause, "If we choose the revolt path, I have an idea for how to use the replicator."

Alex, Zephyr gives you some quick tips on how to make the communication work and you attempt to put them into action. You open up a control panel by the door and dis- and reconnect the wires behind it.
Not being experienced with electronics, however, you must have made a mistake because suddenly, your hands get burned lightly by an electric discharge and the power in your room disappears, leaving you standing in darkness.
Mar 8, 2019 9:41 pm
Alex lets out a string of curses that even Zephyr could hear: creative expressions of questionable parentage of said electronics and exactly what they could do to themselves had they the requisite body parts.

After a silent moment, Alex says, "It didn't work."
Mar 8, 2019 10:18 pm
"Che sfiga! Ok, well do you know if Lorq can hear you from where he is? If we're going to conspire we should do it properly at least. In the mean time I'm gonna rest for a minute, I'm feeling slightly weary. Not sure if it's from the stress, or maybe the anesthesia hasn't fully worn off yet."

Zephyr lays down on his bed with the flat of his hand over his forehead.

"What was your path for revolting by the way? Just out of curiosity."
Mar 9, 2019 12:05 am
Alex sits down on the floor, leaning her back against the shared wall. "Lorq's cell is nearby, but I doubt we could communicate without the guards overhear..." She trails off. "I can make it work."

She takes a deep breath, looking up to the ceiling in thought. "I fear they've infected you, Zephyr. I was awake for the testing, and I saw how excited the guards were at the results they were seeing. They forced me to leave the room while you stayed behind. We can't just wait. If they have infected you, help -- if it's coming at all -- may arrive too late."

She pushes herself to standing position. "Let me get Lorq in the loop, and then I'll tell you my plan."
Mar 9, 2019 6:49 am
Alex goes to the door of her 'cell' and yells out, "Excuse me? Excuse me?! My sincerest apologies, but I would be much more beneficial to you if I were able to communicate. I feel as though our wires are crossed, and everything has broken down. If we could just open a dialogue, uncross our wires and make a connection, it would be to everyone's mutual benefit."

She puts emphasis on certain words, hoping that Lorq isn't sleeping or otherwise distracted, and can even hear her at all. Even still, she chuckles sadly and shakes her head at what she's trying to do.
OOC:
Going to roll expert feelings. Not sure that prepared fits here. edit: even though I said prepared in my roll... sigh.
OOC:
Edit: laser feelings question, probably for Lorq: is there anything I would know of Lorq that would help me communicate my intentions to him more effectively? We've served together, presumably we know each other a little bit.

Machiabelly, try to remember to post as your character. That makes it easier for me when you roll. I don't think you're prepared but you were still successful.
Alex, I'll just say you two know each other well enough and have at one point in the past attended a seminar on covert communications, so that he was able to understand your intentions with what you were saying [Unless you want to change your action with this knowledge]
Lorq succeeds at fixing up his communication system and it connects to Zephyr. Alex, your room is not connected to the communication but you can hear it through the wall.
Alex, a guard knocks angrily at your door. "Keep it down in there! We can communicate later. We're busy now!"
Mar 9, 2019 10:59 pm
"Deepest apologies," says Alex, and turns away from the door with a satisfied (and a little bit smug) smile. Quickly, she moves back to the shared wall with Zephyr.

"Zephyr? Are you there? Did I hear Lorq on your communicator?"

There's a hint of concern in her voice, which might be deadened out by the wall between the rooms, as she listens for a response.
Mar 10, 2019 1:56 am
I believe your instructions got me through it. Are you there?
Mar 10, 2019 2:35 pm
OOC:
Zephyr, Lorq, you can communicate easily through the system. Alex, you can hear the conversation and they can hear you but it's a bit more uncomfortable. Also, you're sitting in absolute darkness. Zephyr has a working replicator in his room.

The guards seem to be unaware of your activities.
Mar 11, 2019 1:35 am
"I am here," Zephyr says to Lorq over the communicator. "Keep this line of communications open for a moment, I think Alex may have a plan. I will relay it to you as she tells me about it.

"Alex," Zephyr says through the wall, "go ahead with what you're thinking. I've got Lorq on the comm here. Lorq, I have repaired the replicator in my room. We may have a plan that involves it. Alex believes I may have been infected, and so it seems we need to act fast."

Zephyr is feeling slightly woozy, and is glad to have his bed near the wall. He has a seat as close as he can to the communicator and waits for what comes next.
Mar 11, 2019 3:06 am
"This would be a lot easier if we were all together, but... if Lorq was able to strengthen the sedatives, I think we need to sedate the guards and see if we can take over the ship."

She sighs. "I know it's only the three of us, and if the infection spreads quickly, then we might even lose one of those. But we're running out of time, and we have to take our chances or Zephyr's going to become one of them. Zephyr, I know that your shipmates should be coming for us, but I think we can all agree that we have no idea when that's going to happen."

"So does anyone have an idea for how to get them to get the three of us together in one room?"

Well, if someone can take being sick it could get 2 of 7s together. If we sedate any guards we could easily release the third.
Even if we can't get take over the ship, we may be able to stay free long enough to figure out where we are and send a distress call.

"I like that plan Lorq. If I were the one to fake it, I could replicate some split pea soup, hold it in my mouth, and then 'vomit' on a guard's shoes when he enters the room to address my complaints. Hopefully vomiting is not typical of my current condition, and they would call you in?"
Zephyr grins to himself. This could be fun.
Mar 11, 2019 4:17 am
"I just have one more request," says Alex through the wall. "Can we have a code phrase to initiate the plan? I was thinking 'roast chicken' would be an ideal trigger phrase."

She stands up and stretches in the complete darkness of her room. "I'm not much with a phaser, so it's probably best that the two of you do the damage. I'm happy to be rescued, but the first one to call me a damsel in distress gets a foot in the crotch. And I can kick.

"Sounds good, I'll get right on it. Zephyr out," and he closes the comm for now.

"Roast Chicken?" Zephyr wonders aloud to himself. "That's odd, but okay whatever works."
After about ten minutes of quiet contemplation, Zephyr walks up to the replicator and activates it. "Soup, split pea...and oatmeal, room temperature, in a cup." Taking the cup of soup, Zephyr walks back to his bed and sits down. He then proceeds to take a mouthful of soup and spits it out on the floor in front of him, making sure to keep a large mouthful left in the cup.

"Guard! Guard!" Zephyr yells out at the door. "Something is wrong! I've just emptied the contents of my stomach all over the floor in here, and I'm still feeling nauseous. This doesn't seem right! I may have food poisoning or a viral infection or something. Please, I think I need a doctor!"

Contrary to the panic in his voice, Zephyr waits nonchalantly with his cup of soup in hand. When the guard comes near the door he will fill his mouth with soup and then quickly stash the cup under the mattress of his bed. This is not the type of intrepid adventure he was expecting when he volunteered for this away team, but it sure will make a great story to tell over drinks once he gets back to the Potential.
Mar 11, 2019 2:44 pm
It doesn't take long for your room door to open. A guard walks in, phaser rifle in a sling over his shoulder but not in his hand. As he walks in, you don't get the feeling that he's expecting any tricks. He looks rather disgusted by the mess. "What the hell happened here?", he yells out (translated by the universal translator from their clicking language). "That shouldn't have happened!"
OOC:
kona, give me a Feelings roll (prepared) with your next post to see how well your bluff is going

Immediately lurching forward at the guard, Zephyr splurts the soup all over the guard's boots.

"Ugh, my apologies," he mutters while wiping his mouth with his sleeve, "It just comes out, you know how it is."

Staggering a bit, he stumbles forward onto his hands and knees and begins to groan softly.

He drags you behind him towards Lorq's door and opens it. He throws Zephyr in and follows after him. He puts one hand on his rifle but still doesn't look particularly alarmed. "Doctor, the female says he is suffering from a fever. Is there anything you can do?"
Mar 11, 2019 3:58 pm
Yes, Lorq's cell is very close on the other side of the hallway. I would say you can hear this
Mar 11, 2019 6:46 pm
it is good that you brought her to me. Help me get her on the bed.

Lorq, the guard doesn't pay any attention to you and you manage to inject him before he can even react.
The man tries to shove you off to the side but the increased dosis you gave him knocks him out almost immediately. Zephyr, you struggle to reach for the rifle and when the guard falls to the ground, you hold it in your hand.
OOC:
I think melee combat would fall under Feelings, not Lasers, but in this case it doesn't matter too much, so I'll just accept it either way.
Mar 11, 2019 7:37 pm
OOC:
I will make sure the guard is breathing and then tie his arms and legs.
OK great plan. Should we peak out and make sure there are no other guards, and free our third team member? And by we, I mean the person who knows how to use a weapon.
Mar 11, 2019 7:48 pm
OOC:
The guard is alive, only stunned. You can tie him up with no problems.
Mar 11, 2019 8:40 pm
From her darkened cell, Alex can hear the brief sounds of struggle and a body slumping to the floor. She waits, though, not wanting to give the game away if it was one of her compatriots that went down. She starts pacing, if only for something to do in the interim.
Mar 11, 2019 8:53 pm
OOC:
You're right Feelings makes sense for melee, and Lasers for ranged if it comes to that?
"Lorq, we need to find a way to get Alex out. If the guard doesn't have a way to access the room, you may have to hack into the control panel." Zephyr searches the guards body for a keycard, comm badge, or whatever may be needed to open Alex's cell. Whether he finds anything or not, he listens at the door to make sure he doesn't hear anything, and then peeks out stealthily. If the coast is clear he will move toward Alex's cell to free her.

kona says:
OOC:

OOC:
That's how I would handle it.
The guard doesn't seem to have a key card or anything else that might help with opening the door. The corridor is empty, so you can easily move over to Alex' door. When you arrive there, you see that the door is not properly locked, only set to a mode where it cannot be opened from the inside. You don't need a key card or password or anything to open it from the outside. You can just release her.
Mar 11, 2019 9:27 pm
"Come with me if you want to live," Zephyr says while holding out his hand to Alex.
Mar 11, 2019 9:55 pm
As the door opens, Alex is ready to tackle whoever might be coming in the room, especially should it be a guard. When Zephyr shows up, backlit from the hallway like some celestial being, spouting nonsense, she steps into the light, a singularly unimpressed look on her face, hands on her hips. "Are you for real?" she says blandly. After a moment passes, though, she breaks into a smile, impulsively hugs him, and is back to business. "The first part of Operation Roast Chicken seems to have gone well. We should find a way to contact your shipmates as quickly as we can. Do we have any idea of how many others we might be facing?"
Mar 11, 2019 10:48 pm
I think we should check to see if any other doors are locked in the same way we may be able to add to our party. Then try to get a message out and maybe find a place to hold up.
Mar 12, 2019 4:16 pm
Alex nods to Lorq, and puts a hand on his shoulder in gratitude for his help. "There was at least one more captive, wasn't there? An ensign from your ship, Zephyr? She could certainly be held nearby, and there's safety in numbers to some extent, as long as we can remain quiet."
Mar 12, 2019 4:33 pm
OOC:
Okay, if you're sneaking through the ship, looking for allies and intel on your captors, all of you give me a Lasers roll - only one die each. I'll add the successes together to determine the result. Also let me know if you're staying together, splitting up and who has the phaser rifle, as well as any other info you think might be relevant
Mar 12, 2019 4:40 pm
OOC:
Personally, I think we need to stay together and sneak through the ship for allies and intel. Zephyr probably should have the rifle. I'm going to assume, if it's okay with you, Spinach, that Alex would've had some training in unarmed combat, if only for exercise purposes. She has a need to burn excess energy.

Mar 12, 2019 8:57 pm
OOC:
Okay, that makes 1 success in total. I don't know if Lorq would be a better shot than Zephyr. Lorq has a higher chance of hitting Lasers but he doesn't seem like he would be an expert with a gun. I don't know about Zephyr. To me, he seems like he might be but he is just a Science Officer...
You stay together, sneaking through the corridors. Most of the doors are unlocked so you can easily inspect them. They are all empty. Eventually, you reach a door that has been sealed teh same way as Alex' door had been - impossible to open from the inside, but unlocked from the outside. When you open the door and look inside, you find Ensign Myers in there, sitting on the bed and looking at you all as the door opens. She appears scared but also relieved when she recognizes Zephyr and Lorq.

Suddenly, you hear clicking from further down the corridor, translated into a shout: "What are you doing in that cell?"
When you turn towards the source of it, you see two guards in vac suits, possibly the same you saw earlier in sickbay, with phaser rifles aimed in your direction. You can tell they're going to open fire.
Mar 12, 2019 11:02 pm
OOC:
Could everyone say where they’re positioned? The ensign is obviously in her room, I’m guessing that Zephyr and Lorq are at least visible to her in the doorway, but my response would be very different depending on who I think the guards can see.
Mar 13, 2019 12:25 am
Zephyr is standing in the hallway just outside the door holding the phaser rifle. A look of relief also passes over his face is he recognizes Ensign Meyers. He turns to look at the two guards, but does not immediately fire.

"Che sfiga," he says to himself quietly.
Mar 13, 2019 2:30 am
OOC:
I would be behind Zephyr. No need to block lines of fire.
Mar 13, 2019 3:44 am
Alex blinks, wide-eyed in apparent confusion as she holds up her hands in surrender. "Wait! This one," she says, indicating Zephyr with a nod of her head, "asked for me to come speak with the one in this cell. He had the rifle, like you do, so I came willingly, only hoping to serve. It seemed like he was... one of you."

Her voice becomes more strained, betraying an edge of panic approaching. "Please don't shoot! Please! I serve willingly!"
OOC:
Going to roll feelings to bluff them, at least confuse them.
OOC:
Laser feelings: Do I see anything out of the ordinary that we could exploit to possibly disable the guards (say, knock them out) without resorting to rifle fire?

I cant think of anything specific. It'sjust a basically empty hallway. You still have some of the tranquilizers but to use those, you would have to be close range.
Do you want to change your action?

OOC:
Nah, go with it. If I can even just confuse them for a bit so that Zephyr might be able to get an surprise shot in, it's something.
Mar 13, 2019 5:04 am
The guards seem confused for a moment but don't lower their weapons. They're not convinced. One of them looks at Zephyr and asks him - in the click language, translated to you by the translators: "What is going on?"
Mar 13, 2019 6:06 pm
Zephyr freezes. He stands there with a dumbfounded look on his face and does not act for a moment.

Then suddenly he says, "That's right! I am one of you. Get in the cell meatbag!" and waves his rifle at Alex and Lorq as if motioning them in. He gives them a sly wink with a momentary half-grin.

Zephyr, the pirate walks up to you. He's not aiming at you anymore but he looks confused. "Shouldn't you be in your cell? What is going on here?" He's still not quite in melee range but he is close enough that Zephyr or Alex (Lorq is in the room already) could try to jump him. If you're too slow, he might get a shot off however.

Alex keeps her hands up. "Please, don't make me go back into the cell? I can help. Waiting is driving me crazy. I don't want to keep sitting around like a roast chicken. I can take care of what's in front of me, while the rest of you take care of the long-range planning," she says, her tone pleading and tired. Her posture slumps a bit, defeated, as she looks from guard to Zephyr and back again.
Mar 13, 2019 6:44 pm
The pirate squint his eyes. He let's out a series of clicking noises at Zephyr that are not being translated. He seems to be very suspicious of you and wants to test Zephyr.
OOC:
Sorry for the confusion. That roll was supposed to be for Feelings to trick the guard. I wrote the last message in a rush. I don't think prepared or expert would apply though, so I'd say it's fine.
Mar 14, 2019 4:07 pm
OOC:
Seems most appropriate for Lorq or Zephyr to go next. I want to see how Zephyr responds to my clumsy code-speak.
Mar 14, 2019 8:21 pm
Zephyr looks at the pirate, then at Alex, and then down at his phaser. He seems to hesitate for a moment, and then turns a dial on the rifle, and fires from the hip at the pirate who just spoke!

He then turns to the other pirate and makes his own series of clicking noises.

Out of the side of his mouth to Alex and Lorq he says, "I've been studying their language. I'm not sure if I got it right but I tried to tell him to surrender."
OOC:
Sorry for the delay, have been busy.

I am ready with a tranquilizer shot if needed, but with rifles going I am not much help. If the other alien surrenders I will drug him and store him with the others.
Mar 14, 2019 8:32 pm
The pirate that Zephyr hit sinks to the ground, stunned by the phaser beam. The other one looks at your group, apparently confused. He doesn't reply to Zephyr's clicking or gives any indication as to whether what Zephyr said makes any sense at all but then decides to turn back and run the way he came from.
Mar 14, 2019 8:34 pm
Prepared for just such an eventuality, Alex is ready, and leaps for the fleeing pirate as soon as he moves.
OOC:
Will edit based on outcome of rolls...
She wraps her arms around the pirate's waist, and her forward momentum carries them both to the floor, where she promptly sits on him. "They always run. Why do they always run?" she muses.

She blows her hair out of her face and looks back at Zephyr. "Nice shot. Might want to swap him for the ensign in the cell."

Let's put these folks to sleep.

Lorq approaches the stunned and also the held alien and gives them a shot of sedative.

Good work folks, we may just pull this off.
Mar 14, 2019 9:51 pm
"Bene!" Zephyr sounds genuinely surprised. A sigh escapes from his lips, "I suppose you're right. Ensign Meyers, join us out here."

Once the others are clear of the cell, Zephyr places the stunned pirate in the cell on the bed gently. "Let's put them both in here, I don't think it can do any harm to have both in one room."

"Ensign Meyers, do you have any idea where we can find Lieutenant Felt or M1-K3?"

"Thank you, doctor."

Alex climbs back to her feet and lets the other two transport the sedated pirates. She straightens her uniform with a half-hearted 'hmph', brushing away a wrinkle that apparently only she can see.

She watches Zephyr with an odd look, head tilted slightly as she considers the science officer. "You're surprisingly forgiving," she says. "I'm sorely tempted to go in there and punch them both until they're black and blue. Or whatever color they'd end up turning at this point."
Mar 14, 2019 9:57 pm
Myers steps out of the cell. What is the plan now? Do you think we can take over the whole ship?", she asks while she helps you move the unconscious pirates into the room. And no, I haven't seen them at all since back on the broken ship when we split up. I hope they're okay.
Mar 14, 2019 10:28 pm
78RPMLife says:
"You're surprisingly forgiving," she says.
"I'm considering this first contact Ms. Lloyd. We have no true understanding of the intent of these pirates or whatever creature may have infected them. For all we know they may be trying to save the last remaining members of their dying species. It is our responsibility as Space Fleet officers to not make assumptions until we can get to the bottom of this. Not to mention as a Science Officer, you could say that I'm more than a little intrigued at the potential of discovering a new species."

Zephyr turns to Ensign Meyers, "I'm not sure what the plan is to be honest. Let's just see if we can find them first."

Zephyr starts making his way down the hall and opening each door carefully.
Mar 14, 2019 10:29 pm
While possible, I think taking over the whole ship could be tough. We need to get a message out first I think. After that we can try and take out more of our guards. Maybe mess with the air. I am open to any suggestions.
Mar 14, 2019 11:03 pm
Alex frowns thoughtfully at Zephyr’s back as he continues down the hall. She processes Zephyr’s words for a long moment before she too follows. "They’re sedated... they wouldn’t have known," she mutters, but it doesn’t sound like her heart’s in it.

"I’m inclined to agree with Lorq. Let’s look for a way to get a transmission off the ship. Messing with the air would work if we had vac suits or something similar. Keep your eyes open for something that would serve."
Mar 15, 2019 4:34 am
You've definitely seen pirates in vac suits so they must be around. Let me know which part of the ship you want to investigate.
Mar 15, 2019 1:15 pm
"Agreed. Maybe head toward the Hangars then? There should be some vac suits there, and it is adjacent to the navigational array. We can use the terminals there to see if we can send a message to the ship. Maybe even activate the homing beacon. I'd like to keep an eye out on the way and see if we can find Lt. Felt and M1-K3 though. How does that sound?"
OOC:
I'm picturing Vac suits to be more like an environmental suit and not a microchem bio-suit. If I'm wrong then heading toward medical/engineering would make more sense.
Last edited March 15, 2019 1:31 pm
Mar 15, 2019 1:36 pm
OOC:
The way I'm picturing, they're basically futuristic space suits. Not as clunky and awkward, so you can basically move freely in them. Designed for surviving in space, for example for repairs on a ship's hull
As you make your way through the ship, you are lucky and don't encounter any more pirates, which makes you think this ship is currently running with minimal crew. You also don't find anymore rooms that are used as prison cells and therefore no prisoners. YOu could try to find if there's an actual brig on this ship but you at least don't find one on your way to the hangar.

You reach a hangar bay and find a small runabout in it. It appears damaged. You can't make out the extent of the damage from the outside. If you wanted to find out, you would have to get inside and try to start it. There's also a large, opened box with vac suits in it in the hangar bay. The box is half empty but there's still six suits left.
Mar 15, 2019 4:24 pm
Alex has been unusually quiet during the scavenger hunt through the pirate ship, apparently lost in some deep thought. A few times she's shown that her nerves aren't 100%, jumping at shadows that don't move quite the way she expected, or flinching at the typical noises of a starship. Each time, she can be heard berating herself in a quiet mutter, but it still doesn't cross the line toward actual attempts at conversation.

Arriving at the hangar bay seems to snap her out of whatever funk she's been in. With something concrete to do, she springs -- relatively -- into action. "Not sure how far this beast would get us," she says. "It should have communication capability though... one of you with more tech skills can go in and check it out." It's not quite an order, but she's already moving on as though she doesn't expect argument. "Meantime, why don't we all get suited up, just in case. Then maybe we can try and find your other crewmates?" she says to Zephyr.
Mar 15, 2019 10:22 pm
Lorq gets suited up.
Dammit I am a doctor not a communications engineer.
OOC:
I always wanted to say that.
if no one is more qualified I will give it a chance.

Mar 16, 2019 4:02 pm
Lorq, it takes you a good amount of time. Like any Spacefleet officer, you have studied this kind of thing at the Academy but that was years ago and you haven't done much with machines like this since then, but after a while, it comes back to you. The ship has some damage but nothing too serious, so you manage to get it to work after a while. In case you want to escape in it: it would be able to make a long distance journey but it wouldn't be able to outrun the pirate ship you are on at the moment.
Mar 16, 2019 6:16 pm
" Nice work Lorq! Suit up and let's head over to the navigational array. We can set up a distress call to our ships, and maybe even activate the homing beacon so they know exactly where to find us. Then we can go look for the others."

Once everyone is ready Zephyr, phaser rifle in hand, heads out the hanger door and back into the hallway of the ship. Finding a terminal should be easy enough, and because the place seemed so deserted earlier he doesn't really feel the need to be exceptionally cautious.

"After we gather everyone, then what? If we get this homing beacon activated, maybe we wait things out? I don't really know that I feel comfortable blasting our way through this entire ship and potentially killing off a species. That is assuming we could even make that happen. Any thoughts?"
Mar 16, 2019 6:31 pm
Suddenly, the comm system starts up and a harsh clicking sounds through the cargo bay. You are all unable to understand it but it doesn't sound friendly. Then the lights around you flash Yellow Alert.

They must have noticed your escape
Mar 16, 2019 6:47 pm
"Yes. I think we’re in trouble."

Alex looks around the hold, not panicking from the looks of things, but more with a hypercritical eye as to usefulness. "We might be able to trick them into thinking we’ve left the ship..."

She looks to Zephyr, and calls Lorq and Ensign Meyers. "What if we were to put the sedated pirates on the ship here and launch it? The pirates here might think the life forms are us, buying us some time to think of another plan.". She wrinkles her nose and frowns. "Of course that would require going back for the sedated pirates. We might not make it that far without having to do some fighting."

She pauses, and smiles faintly. "And Mr. Borealis is right. The less violence, the better."
Mar 16, 2019 6:58 pm
OOC:
I don't think you have any sedated pirates with you. The last ones you encountered, you locked in a cell somewhere. They were none in the hangar bay.
Mar 16, 2019 7:03 pm
OOC:
No, we don’t. I was all excited about my idea until I realized that, but posted it anyway because nothing better came to mind.
Mar 16, 2019 7:05 pm
OOC:
You could try to find some somewhere. Or maybe find a way to create fake life signs to trick the sensors.
Mar 16, 2019 7:10 pm
OOC:
I’ll let the others weigh in that. :)
Mar 16, 2019 8:32 pm
I still feel like our best course of action is to try to make sure that the others know that we are here alive. Maybe after that we can use our knowledge of the Consortium ship's build to find a place to hideout? I bet I can override the scanners so that they can no longer sense life forms. At least temporarily."
Mar 16, 2019 9:00 pm
Alex seems prepared to argue, mouth opening with a quick retort, but she swallows it before it’s spoken. "If you think you can manage that, I’m willing to go along."

"Whatever it is, we need to decide and act soon. We’re playing on borrowed time, and who knows when it’s going to run out."
Mar 16, 2019 9:44 pm
if you can jam the sensors quickly, do it. A message is priority one though. Work on the jamming and I will send a message from the runabout.
OOC:
I assume that since we got the thing working I would know how to send a message and turn on the homing beacon.
Lorq walks on to the smaller ship and goes to the comm and sends an open hail

Attention all Consortium ships. We are surviving crew from ships attacked by pirates. Please send help.
OOC:
I will include coordinates and the names of the survivors, put it on repeat, and turn on the homing beacon.
Mar 16, 2019 9:49 pm
OOC:
Lorq, that's no problem at all. However, the pirates will definitely pick up this message and know where it came from, so it might get dangerous for you in the hangar bay.

Zephyr, there's a terminal in the hangar bay that you can use to try and override their sensors but you'll have to give me a Lasers roll
Mar 16, 2019 9:55 pm
OOC:
I think it is worth the risk. Rescue is important. I am going to try a laser roll to see if I can do something to stop the pirates from stopping the message if they get on the shuttle. Also, I will search it for any weapons that may be stored on it.

Alex gestures to Ensign Meyers and waves her to follow. While Lorq and Zephyr work their technical magic, Alex goes to stand near the entrance to the hold. She grabs a nearby piece of metal pipe that must have been waiting for some engineering tech to do some repairs, and hands one to the ensign. "Anyone comes through the door, take them down. Enough to knock them out, not enough to kill them. Unless you feel more comfortable with a phaser rifle."

Whichever the ensign chooses, Alex waits beside the entrance with makeshift weapon in hand.
Mar 17, 2019 7:04 am
Meyers looks at you for a second, slightly confused. "Um, thanks for the offer, but I think I prefer the phaser."
She takes position next to the door.

Lorq, you try to send out the distress signal when the runabout computer suddenly locks you out. You must have triggered some sort of security system and it requires authorization by a high ranking officer from the USS Verdun.
Zephyr, you're sitting at the terminal for a while. You're trying to override the sensors but it's not working. Eventually, the same thing happens that has also happened to Lorq. The console gets blocked and requires a USS Verdun officer's authorization to reconnect.
Mar 17, 2019 6:06 pm
OOC:
Is the verdun the ship we are on? Am I from this ship? Have I seen any officers from the Verdun?
Mar 17, 2019 7:14 pm
OOC:
Yes, this ship is the USS Verdun, although I think none of you would know that. Actually, it's also written on the runabout, but before you got into the cargo hold, you didn't know the name of this ship. The other thread found that out after Zephyr was already on here. Lorq, you and Alex are from the USS Sigma and got kidnapped onto this ship with some other officers but you don't know where those are. You don't know who would be part of the Verdun crew but you have seen pirates around that were wearing Spacefleet uniforms that you are pretty sure were not stationed on the Sigma, so they might be from the Verdun
Mar 17, 2019 8:45 pm
Zephyr curses to himself as the screen locks him out.

"Great, now what do we do? Should we get out of this hangar area? I'm sure they know we're here now, so that makes us sitting ducks."

Alex looks a little crestfallen as the technical parts of the plan are revealed as failures. "No luck? Stars..." she says, shaking her head.

"We may not have a choice. If the runabout's not an option, we're going to have to find our way to a more robust comm array. It's not ideal, but we have to move," she says crisply and waves the men toward the door. "There won't be any bluffing our way through, so we'll have to be prepared to stun." Panic and stress seem to agree with her -- she's more forceful than before.

To Zephyr, she says, "What's our next best option for sending the message without having to take over the entire ship? Sickbay? Transporter room? Engineering?"
Mar 17, 2019 9:42 pm
OOC:
The bridge will probably be where most pirates are. Sickbay has working computers but can be locked out and since the pirates seem very interested in medical experiments, it might also be well guarded. Engineering should work well but it's hard to say how many people are down there. It's a critical area to protect when there's intruders loose in the ship
Mar 17, 2019 10:26 pm
"Medical doesn't seem like a good idea, isn't that where you were conducting the testing Lorq? Engineering may be our best bet, although I believe that means we're going to have to make our way through the interconnecting dorsal and up to the upper deck level, which is nearer to the bridge. The Turbo Lift should take us right there though...unless we want to try to be sneakier."

I was testing in medical and there always seemed to be guards about. I guess engineering is the best bet. I think sneaky may be better unless they can scan for us, in which case I guess speed would be more important.
Mar 18, 2019 2:03 am
"My vote is for the sneaky way to engineering," Alex says. "I’d rather not take our chances with meeting more pirates with phasers. I don’t think I’m going to be able to baffle anyone with my verbal contortions now that they’re looking for us."
Mar 18, 2019 2:18 am
Sneaky way it is keep eyes open before and aft and hope for luck.
Mar 18, 2019 4:38 am
You slowly make your way through the corridors. This ship is of a very different design than the Potential, so Zephyr, you wouldn't know how to get to Engineering. However, Lorq and Alex, the Verdun, while not identical to the Sigma, is very similar in design so you quickly get to Engineering without encountering any pirates on the way there. You reach the door to Engineering but you can't tell from the outside whether there will be people in there or not. What do you do?
Mar 18, 2019 4:50 am
OOC:
Point of order: if we approached the door, and it was unlocked, it would open on its own, yes?
Mar 18, 2019 4:54 am
OOC:
Yes, I think that happens automatically without you having to give any further input except walking up to it
Mar 18, 2019 5:23 am
OOC:
Well...I guess if it is going to open, we should be on alert...laser weapon up front, everyone else ready to get behind cover.
Let's be ready for anything. Try not to get in each other's way, and not get killed or taken over by bugs.
Mar 18, 2019 5:31 am
Alex tries not to laugh aloud at Lorq's comment, which she's mostly successful at. She puts a hand on his shoulder with a fond smile as she walks past him. "Admirable goals," she murmurs. "Zephyr, Meyers, take point beside the door, phasers ready. Lorq and I will take cover. When everyone is in place, open the doors and see if anyone's awaiting us inside."

She takes a deep breath to calm her nerves, which are visible only in the way she keeps absently straightening her uniform. "Good luck, everyone," she says, and goes to get into position away from line of sight of anyone on the other side of the door.
Mar 18, 2019 4:40 pm
Zephyr stands at the ready on the other side of the door to engineering, opposite Ensign Meyers. Looking down at his rifle, he confirms it is set to stun. He then gives everyone a look to confirm they're ready, and then waves his hand in front of the door.
Mar 18, 2019 4:48 pm
The door opens on its own. Everyone positioned at the door sees that there are three people in there in total. One who appears to be working on a terminal and two security guards with phaser rifles. As the door opens, one of them shoots at you but misses the door by a little bit. The other one raises his rifle and aims at you, ready to shoot any second. The third one that had been working at the terminal ducks under a table to hide
Mar 18, 2019 5:11 pm
Zephyr immediately fires his rifle at the guard who fired at them.
OOC:
I'm rolling prepared since we were in position for this first shot at least. I'm not sure how you want to handle Ensign Meyers.

Edit: If the Laser Feelings applies, I'd just like to know if it seems like the person working at the terminal is an innocent or not.

Alex remains in cover as best she can, though she tries to get a line of sight to the area beyond the door from where she hides if only to provide warning should another pirate join the fray.
Mar 18, 2019 5:34 pm
LF: He is also infected by a parasite.
OOC:
If you want to change your action, you can. Meyers will shoot as well. You can add an extra die for help. Her shooting result will be determined by your roll
Mar 18, 2019 7:03 pm
OOC:
I'll leave my action as-is. Added Ensign Meyers' roll to my post above.
Mar 18, 2019 7:12 pm
Before the second pirate can fire his phaser, Zephyrs blast hits him right in the chest, stunning him and taking him out of the fight. Almost at the same time, Meyers shoots the second one and he falls to the ground motionless as well.
The third person is still hiding unter the table. As far as you could see, he was not armed but there are two unconscious guards with phaser rifles right next to his hiding spot
Mar 18, 2019 8:11 pm
I will stay out of line of fire the best I can, but go into the room so we are not noticeable from the corridor.

If someone want to get that guy away from the guns we can sedate him and I will try again to get a message out.
Mar 18, 2019 9:06 pm
Zephyr steps into the room with rifle pointed at the remaining person and says, "Now, I don't want to pretend to tell you what the best thing to do here is, but I do insist that you not make any sudden movements. Your life is too important to be wasted."

Zephyr walks toward him with the intent of kicking the phaser rifles away. "It's obvious that we now have the upper hand. Step away from the console."

The man will look at you with a neutral expression on his face and yell some unpleasant sounding clicks at you but he will come out of his hiding spot, raise his hands and he does not attack you... yet

What do you want to do?
Mar 18, 2019 9:11 pm
"Come on in Lorq," Zephyr says over his shoulder, "you and I can work together to send the message. Ensign Meyers, please make sure our friend is well behaved."
OOC:
Lorq can add a d6 for me helping him.
Mar 18, 2019 9:16 pm
Meyers aims her phaser at the man who growls at her but still does not seem willing to risk an attack.
"Should I just stun him? Make sure he can't make trouble?", asks Meyers.
Mar 18, 2019 9:26 pm
Alex enters with the others and picks up one of the phasers. Better to have a chance at defending oneself than not, even if she is likely as not to stun the wrong person at the wrong time. She comes to stand next to Meyers and shakes her head. "Not yet. Let's not escalate this farther than we need to," she says quietly, calmly, hoping to ease Meyers' nerves. Alex points her own phaser at their temporary prisoner. "I'm confident that one of the two of us can manage to stun him, should he decide to take his chances," she adds, smiling warmly at the pirate captive, as though welcoming him to try.
Mar 18, 2019 9:30 pm
Zephyr turns to look again at their captive, "We may need him to access the control panel for us if we can't get in again. Plus, if we keep him awake we may be able to communicate with him. Maybe even find out more about what their purpose is here. Assuming we have that much time anyway."

Zephyr turns back to the console with Lorq and begins to work at accessing the panel.
Mar 18, 2019 11:46 pm
Okie doke. Let's try this again
Lorq walk over to the panel and tries to get a message out.

Oh, we are not sure if these thing do infect others for sure. And definitely not how they do it. So, be careful.

Rolls

2 for prepared and 1 for help sending message. - (3D6)

(642) = 12

Mar 19, 2019 1:12 am
Alex takes a single step back from the captive, training her phaser on him more directly. This technical manipulation went wrong last time, and she’s just a bit worried about how it might go this time.
Mar 19, 2019 4:36 am
Lorq, you manage to send out a beacon broadcasting your location as well as any other information about your situation you want to send. Let me know.

Although you did your best to hide your access point, it will only take them a few minutes at most to discover that the beacon has been sent from Engineering
Mar 19, 2019 4:53 am
OOC:
Our names, our location, and the ships name. And put it on repeat.
OK message is sent on repeat. I am going to try and lock this terminal to prevent the message from being stopped.
I suggest we leave here and maybe go back to the shuttle bay. Maybe defend it, or if things go bad we can try an escape.

Mar 19, 2019 4:59 am
Alex nods, looking back over her shoulder toward the door briefly, not willing to take her eyes off their captive for very long. "What about this one?" she says, gesturing to the clicking pirate. "We can't very well take him with us and we don't have time to interrogate him, even if we could figure out what he's saying..."

She sighs heavily, takes aim at the pirate, and fires a shot on maximum stun.
OOC:
I'm not sure if I really need to roll, given that I'm at more or less point blank range, but I'll do so anyway just in case.

Yep, I knew it... I probably somehow hit both Lorq and Zephyr in one shot. We're dead.

Phaser Lasers, prepared - (1d6, 1d6)

1d6 : (6) = 6

1d6 : (5) = 5

Mar 19, 2019 5:01 am
It's possible to enter your specific life signs into the computer to make an exception for them when scanning for people. If you do that, the computer will not detect your location when scanning for you but the pirates can very quickly remove this block if they discover it.
You could also try to reboot the whole sensor array, taking it offline for an hour or two. You would need authorization by a Verdun Engineer, however, or you would have to hack your way into the system
OOC:
Let me know if you want to change action or not
Mar 19, 2019 5:02 am
Alex, you don't have to roll for that. He's not resisting
Mar 19, 2019 6:58 am
OOC:
I will lock the people out. I think the message is more important. If I can do both, i will remove us from the sensors and hope they don't think of it
Mar 19, 2019 8:58 am
Lorq, you set it up so that the information gets transmitted on repeat and you manipulate the sensor so it won't pick you up. If you're lucky, that will keep them from finding you at least for a while.
But they will notice the beacon and they will probably send someone down to Engineering to check it out. You should probably hide
Mar 19, 2019 3:56 pm
With their captive now stunned like the other two, Alex lowers her phaser. "They're going to figure it out sooner or later, no matter what we do to hide ourselves electronically. Where do we hide? Back to the hangar bay? Somewhere down here?"

She takes a longer moment to survey the surroundings for possibilities. "I'm a diplomat. All my sneakiness comes from talking. So I'm open to suggestions."
Mar 19, 2019 4:33 pm
"Would you want to try and open a channel and you can try to talk to them? We might be able to hack into the digital intercom system that is typically reserved for red alerts."

Zephyr thinks for a moment and looks slightly crestfallen when he glances at their stunned captors lying haphazardly on the floor.

"Lieutenant Felt and M1-K3 are still on the ship somewhere, we could try to locate them. Or we could try to predict where and how our crewmates will enter the ship when they get here and wait in that area. My guess is they'll have to take out the shields and then try to beam directly to the bridge. Although with that crew you can never be certain."
Mar 19, 2019 5:37 pm
You don't sound fully confident of you shipmates.
We could try and negotiate...maybe even turn it into a hostage situation, we have 3 of them here and two others in quarters.
OOC:
When I was hiding our life signs did I see those of Felt or M1-K3
Mar 19, 2019 6:06 pm
Alex nods once to Lorq. "If you can lock the door effectively, then I think we could try to negotiate. I imagine the other two we disabled have been found, given the alert earlier, but these three might be bargaining chips."

She turns to Zephyr and Meyers, and sets the phaser rifle to lean against the wall nearby. "What do the two of you think? Hide or negotiate? Who knows how long it will be before our message gets a response."
Mar 19, 2019 8:47 pm
"Negotiating sounds difficult, but I suppose it depends on what we're asking for. That they'll just let us go? It doesn't hurt to try I suppose. But I'm not willing to actually execute anyone if it comes down to that."
Mar 19, 2019 9:52 pm
"No way to find out without trying. Lorq, shut down all access to Engineering as best you can. If there are any other entrances or exits we should be aware of, let me know," says Alex, then in an undertone, "When we get out of this, I am spending more time in Engineering. I hate not knowing the exits."

She tugs on her uniform, takes a few silent moments to collect her thoughts, and nods to Zephyr and Lorq. "Open a general communication. Transmit throughout the ship, please."

Rolls

Checking for alternate entrances - (1D6)

(3) = 3

Mar 20, 2019 4:30 am
Lorq, you check Engineering for alternate entrances and find that there are many. While there is only one door, access tunnels lead from here to.everywhere on the ship. If the pirates are willing to climb through them, they would easily find their way to you.
Zephyr, you try to access the intercom but accidentally set off a hacking alert.
The three of you, as well as everyone else on the ship, hear the ship explain how there was an unauthorized access to vital systems from main engineering.
Now they definitely know where you are
Mar 20, 2019 4:50 am
Crap. Shall we try and get back to shuttle bay with a hostage, or just hole up here?
Mar 20, 2019 4:50 am
Alex looks to the ceiling, her shoulders sagging. That moment of disbelief only lasts briefly though, as she picks up the phaser rifle and moves to the door. "No time to waste now. They're going to be here any moment. Fight or hide, this is not the place I want to be right now," she says sharply. "We've tried the hangar bay, we've tried engineering, sick bay is almost certainly out... maybe we've drawn them away from the bridge. We've hardly seen anyone in the rest of the ship except for here. With all of us armed, it might be time to storm the castle, in a manner of speaking."
Mar 20, 2019 6:20 am
Sounds good to me. Fortune favours the bold. Lead the way
Mar 20, 2019 1:18 pm
Zephyr looks uncertain, but nods at Alex in agreement.
Mar 20, 2019 1:22 pm
OOC:
Are you planning to sneak there and avoid attention or go to the bridge guns blazing?
Mar 20, 2019 1:31 pm
"I believe we should sneak up there and try to over hear their plans," Zephyr says to the group. "Until we're certain how many are on the bridge it's probably not best to just throw ourselves into the belly of the beast. No?"
Mar 20, 2019 1:51 pm
OOC:
I think sneak as much as possible and avoid a shootout as long as possible. The way we roll the dice, we’re going to stun everything but the bad guys.
Mar 20, 2019 1:56 pm
OOC:
Unless Lorq is against sneaking, give me another set of Lasers
Mar 20, 2019 3:58 pm
Alex nods curtly. "Gathering intelligence is generally the best plan. I'm just more used to doing it from a terminal, rather than from behind a phaser rifle," she replies sourly.

Before waving the door open, she adds, "If this goes utterly wrong, it's been a pleasure serving with all of you. Let's hope the distress beacon brings some help."
OOC:
Har har har... what a time for laser feelings. Based on my knowledge thus far of this ship and those like it, what would be the most out-of-the-way route to get to the bridge without encountering pirate resistance?

Mar 20, 2019 5:19 pm
OOC:
I am fine with sneaking and I think I will just follow along. No need for me to roll.
Mar 20, 2019 5:22 pm
Laser Feeling: The ship so far appears very understaffed. There should be many more pirates around than there are. It almost seems as if they want to let you move around the ship, probably to lure you into a trap. You have the distinct feeling, however, that the bridge should also be mostly clear
Mar 20, 2019 5:31 pm
OOC:
"...probably to lure you into a trap." Great. :)
"I feel as though we should stick to the usual corridors," Alex says, though there's just a hint of doubt in her voice. "Maintenance tunnels would be quieter, but I'm already a bit twitchy with a phaser in my hand. Put me in a confined space, disaster probably ensues."
Mar 20, 2019 6:14 pm
"Alright, let's head out then," Zephyr says trying to sound more confident than he is. We head toward the bridge. "If we encounter anyone along the way, maybe one of us should act like we're escorting prisoners? Whoever that is should probably hold this," and he gestures toward the phaser rifle.

I am not particularly skilled, but I have had the basic training. I think it will be hard to fool them now that alarms have gone off though. Let's just get to the bridge quickly and hope for the best.
Mar 20, 2019 6:28 pm
Alex opens her mouth to speak, but by the sudden silence and searching look she gives Zephyr, she's finding a lot more to unpack in that statement than might be expected. She shifts the rifle in her hands absently (it seems), and her finger just happens to find its way to the triggering mechanism.

"Are you feeling up to carrying the rifle?" is all she asks.
OOC:
Going to roll expert feelings to bluff Zephyr into not realizing how suddenly worried I am about putting myself as a 'prisoner' in his infected hands...

Zephyr returns Alex's look coolly for a moment.

"Well, you said yourself I'm a better shot," and then he looks away and down the hall in the direction they'll be heading, "but I think Lorq is right the alarms have already gone off and they will be looking for us. Let's just carry on then."
Mar 20, 2019 6:59 pm
Alex will not be outfaced by a scientist. She looks back at Zephyr, one eyebrow raised in question. If he knows what her suspicions are, so be it. His relative lack of satisfactory response just means she'll hold onto her rifle herself. If she has to club someone -- or worse, something -- with it, so be it.

As it is, she smiles. "I'd rather have more of us armed than try and fool them into thinking some of us are prisoners. In my experience, that trick only works once before they catch on." She gives Zephyr a look of challenge. "Let's go."
Mar 21, 2019 2:56 am
To the bridge it is.

Lorq senses tension between his new allies and Hope's they can all work together.
Mar 21, 2019 4:37 am
You make your way through the pretty much empty ship. On you way to the bridge, you don't encounter any pirates.
You get to the door to the bridge. Even if the ship is running on a skeleton crew, someone will be on the bridge
Mar 21, 2019 1:54 pm
"Well then, here we are. Alex, would you care to take the lead? If we are to do anything but just open fire when we enter, then I have a feeling you are better suited than Lorq and I. What is the plan by the way?"

Zephyr looks up and down the hall near the bridge, watching for any pirates that may pass by unexpectedly.

"Maybe I should guard the door while you two enter? This is likely the most heavily trafficked part of the ship."
Mar 21, 2019 5:02 pm
Despite the lack of resistance in getting here, it's been a tense journey -- at least for Alex. Each door, each corner, she's had one eye on her surroundings, and one eye on Zephyr for signs of the infection taking further hold. If she had a third and fourth eye, she'd probably be using that as well. Of all the times to be human...

Plan? With so much of her brain focused on her sudden paranoia, she hasn't put much thought into a plan. But she's certainly not going to let anyone know that. She buys a bit more time by watching Zephyr closely -- the rate of his breathing, the movement of his eyes, and so on -- before she speaks. "We need to negotiate from a position of strength. We need to know what we're facing inside."

She looks to Lorq and Ensign Meyers, then back to Zephyr. "Open the door. Let's get a sense of the amount of resistance, and work from there. If it seems like we can negotiate, I will gladly take the lead. If we capture the bridge, then you can guard the door. Until then, we stay together."

You also are NOT helping. None of you are any help at all. :)
Mar 21, 2019 5:19 pm
Here we go.
Lorq has his laser ready to go.
OOC:
why do I feel our two threads will never be merged. LOL
Mar 21, 2019 5:20 pm
OOC:
I'm helping! Without me there would be no spaceship and you would all suffocate in space!
You take position at the door again, similar to how you did in Engineering.
You open the door and see only one person in there, a short man with pale skin and hair. He's sitting in the captain's chair but has it turned away from the viewscreen and instead looking towards the door. He's holding a phaser in his hand but it is not pointed at you and he doesn't look immediately aggressive.
Meyers raises her rifle and looks at Zephyr, silently asking her superior officer whether to shoot or not.
Mar 21, 2019 6:53 pm
Zephyr holds an arm out and motions to her to hold her fire. He then steps onto the bridge and off to the side of the doorway behind one of the terminals in order to allow the others to enter.

"Hold your fire. Who are you, and what is going on here?"
Mar 21, 2019 6:58 pm
Alex follows in, moving in and to the side of the door, sweeping the room with her rifle at the ready should anything pop out from hiding. She lets Zephyr do the talking. For now.
Mar 21, 2019 7:09 pm
He doesn't respond to you right away, instead just letting out a series of clicking noises. He seems tense, as if he is getting ready to shoot but he doesn't raise his phaser just yet. His eyes are particularly focused on Alex, as she's moving through the bridge

Alex flinches as Zephyr raises his rifle. If she had more training, more experience with a rifle, she might have reacted more quickly, but as it is, the outcome seems positive enough. The tip of her rifle dips a bit, and she watches Ensign Meyers move to take the pirate's weapon.

She doesn't move away from the wall, though. No one's coming up behind her, that's for damn sure. "This was too easy. Much too easy," she says. The strain is evident in her voice. Without turning to him, Alex says, "Lorq, are you able to determine just how many of our captors are actually on this vessel? And where they might be? Meanwhile, let's see if we can hail your ship, Zephyr."

Lorq, your scan shows that except for yourself, there are fifteen other life signs on the ship. They are spread out all over the ship with never more than three in the same room.

You also realize that you are too far away from the Potential to open a channel.
Mar 22, 2019 4:28 pm
"Fifteen," Alex muses. "That's an exceptionally small crew."

She walks over to the stunned pirate and prods him -- not entirely gently -- with her foot. "I suggest we move this one off the bridge. Send him somewhere on the lift, maybe." She looks to the others. "Shut down the two doors granting access to the bridge, and hole up here while we decide on our next move. I don't think we need to post a guard at the door that way, Mr. Borealis. However, we should address the fact that you were very likely infected with whatever has affected these people."

She makes no particular recommendations along those lines, waiting instead for Zephyr to speak.
Mar 22, 2019 8:24 pm
"Hmm, yes, well I'm not feeling any adverse effects," Zephyr says coolly. "What do you propose we do?"
Mar 22, 2019 10:07 pm
"We can lock this one in the ready room for use as a possible bargaining chip," says Alex. "From there, I'm open to ideas. We had talked about messing with the air. Now might be a time to do that."

She takes another long look at Zephyr, and apparently makes the decision to trust him for now. "Is there a way we could identify whether those fifteen life forms include your missing shipmates?"

If you are infected, and it seems fairly sure that you are, then we don't know if or when you will turn. I am very sorry to say this, but I feel like maybe you should hand over your laser. Please don't take offense, but I am sure you would not want the parasite to do anything that you would regret.

Lorq holds out his hand slightly embarrassed but steadfast.

Zephyr hesitates for a moment and seems taken aback.

"Very well," he says to Lorq in a civil tone, "I understand your concern Doctor, but please keep in mind that you have now essentially decreased our numbers from three to two versus their fifteen."

He hands his phaser rifle to Lorq and turns to Alex.

"That's a good idea Ms. Lloyd. Now that we're on the bridge our access to the ship's sensors may be less restricted."

Zephyr steps up to the science station near the front of the bridge but off to the side. He taps the console a number of times with a faint look of consternation on his face.

"I hope this works."

Alex conscripts Ensign Meyers to help drag the stunned pirate into the ready room, slinging the phaser rifle over her shoulder while they work. "Thank you," she says to the ensign. "How are you holding up?"
Mar 23, 2019 7:14 am
Zephyr, you manage to access the terminal and scan the life forms on the ship again but, comparing the life signs of your group with any of the others you can't really find any clear indicator to tell infected and uninfected people apart, so you can't say whether there's more prisoners or just pirates on this vessel
Mar 23, 2019 7:17 am
Ensign Meyers says: "I'm fine, thank you. I mean, getting captured by parasite pirates is not my ideal way to spend the day but it looks like we're mostly put of danger now and will probably be reunited with the Potential soon."

Can you tell from your scans if any of the life signs seem to be stuck in one place...like they ar locked in their quarters?
Mar 25, 2019 4:16 am
Alex, to her credit, doesn't laugh out loud at Meyers' starry-eyed optimism. "Let's certainly hope so," she says, a lopsided smile added on, just to try and put the ensign at ease. As they lay the pirate down in the ready room, Alex lets his head drop just a little clumsily. The thunk it makes is petty, but enjoyable nonetheless. "Ensign, you've served for some time with Lt. Commander Borealis, yes? Do you feel you would notice if he was... acting strangely? Out of character?"
Mar 25, 2019 6:12 am
"I don't know him that well, to be honest. We've been on two or three away missions before and I've seen him around on the ship but with him being a science officer and me being security, we don't work together all that often. I think I would still notice if he was acting suspiciously different."

"Good idea, I will continue to monitor them and see if I notice any movement," Zephyr says to Lorq.

"Meanwhile, I am going to hail the Potential. I mean we have the bridge to ourselves here, we may as well take advantage. Maybe Commander Cassano and a team could come here to help us locate them. Help even the odds."

Zephyr presses a few buttons on the console in front of him.
OOC:
Feel free to resolve this later if you'd rather finish Alex and Ensign Meyers' discussion before this happens. I'll roll below too in case we need that to open a channel. This is all assuming they're close enough to receive a hail. If not I guess we'll have to scan for them.

Alex, as you're turning to leave the ready room, out of the corner of your eye, you notice that the pirate's head is moving just a tiny bit.
Mar 25, 2019 3:55 pm
Alex doesn't just flinch: she whirls quickly, raising the phaser rifle in a panic. In more trained hands, it might have looked much more impressively cool, but in the diplomat's, it really only looks like sudden terror. "It moved!" she says in a harsh whisper. "Meyers, did you see it move, just the head?"

When the pirate doesn't leap to attack, she settles herself just a little more, but she doesn't lower the rifle.
Mar 25, 2019 4:50 pm
Meyers raises her rifle at the pirate. "I didn't see anything. He should still be knocked out for an hour or so from the phaser hit. Do you want me to make sure?"
Mar 25, 2019 5:49 pm
If you think he moved, stun him again. Better safe than a host.
Mar 25, 2019 5:55 pm
Alex nods curtly to Meyers. "Please do the honors," she says. "Hit him twice if you have to."
Mar 25, 2019 6:35 pm
Just as you give the order to shoot again, the pirate jumps up from a lying into a standing position in just one inhuman move. He runs right at Alex and Ensign Meyers at the ready room door. Meyers shoots at him but he just barely manages to avoid being hit.
He's almost at your position now and shows no sign of slowing down.

"What the..." Alex chirps in shock. She squeezes off one shot from the phaser rifle in a panic, then turns the weapon to use it as a club to the side of the charging pirate's head. "Take him down!" she shouts, her voice rising to an uncharacteristically high pitch.

You shoot at him but again, the man evades the attack and gets closer. He raises a hand with sharp fingernails that almost look like claws and slices at your face with it. You manage to avoid most of the attack but you feel his nails open a thin wound on your cheek. You return the attack by hitting him with your weapon. You hit him well and he gets thrown back lightly, almost losing his balance.

He is now standing between the three of you on one side and Zephyr on the other and starts clicking menacingly at you, Alex.

Is it possible to knock him out with my fists?
Mar 26, 2019 6:23 pm
Laser Feeling: It looks like something related to the parasites makes the hosts much more resistant to the stun. It's still possible to stun them, as he did show a reaction when Lorq hit him, but the infected seem to recover much faster and even be able to shake off a hit or two at max setting. For your edited question: It's not impossible but knocking him out like that is going to be very difficult. If you had a heavy pipe or something, that would help
OOC:
Usually, you would be able to change your action after an LF but since you were only defending yourself against an attack, I'll say that doesn't apply here.
The pirate manages to grab a hold of Zephyr and takes cover from Alex, Meyers and Lorq behind him. He digs his nails deep into Zephyr's skin, drawing blood around his neck. He uses the other hand to get a firmer grip on him. With one hand dug into his neck and the other arm holding Zephyr firmly in place, it's going to be almost impossible for him to free himself.
The others are seeing this from a few meters distance. He is holding Zephyr as a human shield, so it's going to be very difficult for you to hit him without hitting Zephyr.

"I knew this was too easy," Alex mutters, lifting her arm to wipe the blood running down her cheek. It begins bleeding again almost instantly, but she pays it no more mind for the moment. She raises her phaser rifle, for all the good it's likely to do her, and keeps it trained on the Zephyr-pirate conglomerate. "What do you want? There has to be a way we can resolve this without resorting to violence," she says to the pirate.
Mar 26, 2019 6:59 pm

Lorq, Zephyr is the hostage. I would assume he has noticed.

And the pirate has moved to the bridge now. Alex and Meyers are stilla t the door to the ready room, Lorq, you have moved away from them a bit. Meyers is starting to move in the other direction, trying to encircle the pirate with you.

If you manage to stun him, the nails might hurt him some more but he's probably not going to die from it. However, stunning the pirate doesn't seem very easy, so he might have time to kill Zephyr if you choose to shoot at him.
The pirate looks at you, Alex. "You're trying to lure your people here to kill us. Let me and my people escape with a shuttle!", he demands with a monotonous voice. "And drop your weapons!"
Mar 26, 2019 7:45 pm
OOC:
Sorry. Names are my kryptonite. I was thinking that if I stunned Zephyr and they went limp, it might surprise the host enough for us to get a series of stuns in...or even a kill.
It is hard for us to negotiate while you are threatening one of our lives. Besides, we do not kill new life forms we meet. We could have killed you and our guards, but we chose to stun you.

Alex moves in concert with Meyers and Lorq, as the three of them spread out evenly around Zephyr and his captor. "We have no intention of killing anyone. In truth, we have offered assistance on many occasions since we were taken on board. As my colleague says, we have had many opportunities to exact revenge and kill many of you along the way, but we've taken none of them. We only want to return to our own people."

She reaches up with one hand to touch the narrow line of blood on her face. "We have no intention of dropping our weapons as long as you hold one of our people's lives in your hands," she says, nodding toward Zephyr. "Nor do we have any intention of killing you. We will have to trust one another. But if there can be no arrangement, then we are at an impasse."
Mar 27, 2019 5:30 pm
The pirate eyes the three of you that are circling him suspiciously. He pulls Zephyr towards the door. Zephyr, his claws dig deep, sending waves of pain through your body.
"Just let me leave the bridge without shooting again. I'll leave this meatbag with you!"
Mar 27, 2019 6:46 pm
Lorq looks at the others and shrugs.
Does one more out there make any real difference? I vote to let him go. I don't want to lose anyone.
Mar 27, 2019 6:46 pm
Alex winces in sympathy. "Let him go, and you can leave. We can leave each other in peace until we are able to return to our own ship, yes? We don't need to fight one another, and we can go our separate ways."

She doesn't lower her own weapon, nor does she suggest to the others that they do so either. "Just let him go."
Mar 27, 2019 6:51 pm
He slowly inched towards the door, still pulling Zephyr with him. Eventually, he gets close enough to the door, that it opens. He keeps moving until he's right in the doorframe.
He eyes the three of you suspiciously one more time before quickly pulling his fingers out of Zephyr's neck, throwing him forward to the ground and jumping backward through the door, which closes behind him.
Zephyr falls to the ground, bleeding rather heavily from his neck.
Mar 27, 2019 6:57 pm
Alex lets out an explosive breath. "Lorq, see to Zephyr. Meyers, lock that damned door. Lock us down in every way you can think of. I don't want to see another one of those cursed things on this bridge again," she says sharply. A shudder rolls over her body. "I've never seen anything move so fast. I honestly thought we just needed to find a way to communicate and understand one another but... the malevolence in its eyes..."

She shakes her head, and moves over toward Zephyr to help Lorq if need be.
Mar 27, 2019 7:18 pm
"Well that was unexpected," Zephyr says while holding his hand over the wounds on his neck. "I wonder if that one was stronger than the others. Maybe that's why he was in the captain's chair.

We better hurry and do what we're gonna do before he alerts the others. We don't really want them leaving this ship do we?"

Breathing a sigh of relief, Zephyr moves over to one of the nearby chairs and lets Lorq do his work.
