01: Arrival at Tsuma

Mar 10, 2019 10:38 pm
The Topaz Championship
It is the twentieth year of the reign of the divine Emperor, Hantei the 38th. The Emerald Empire has stood for a thousand years, thanks to the guidance of the kami and the wise benevolence of the Hantei emperors. Each of the seven Great Clans vies eternally to be first in the Emperor's favor while safeguarding Rokugan from its many enemies within and without.
The Topaz Championship is a chance for each clan to test their best and brightest against one another. Though all contestants can pass the tests and become samurai, the winner claims glory for themselves and their clan, and may even earn a high-ranking position in the Empire.
As contestants, you are all traveling to the village of Tsuma, where the Championship will be held at the Kakita Dueling Academy. Who knows, maybe you will win it all and become the Topaz Champion...

Despite coming from different clans, since meeting each other, you have been travelling together on the road, occasionally encountering other travellers and peasants transporting goods. You can now see the village of Tsuma just ahead through the blossoming trees. Soon you’ll have arrived and can rest yourselves before the contest begins tomorrow!

As you walk down the road beside the Tangu river, you find your way blocked by a cart upended across the road ahead. To your right, the river laps up against the edge of the path. To your left, an artfully-crafted stone wall blocks off a broad and flooded field of rice. There is no way to proceed without either getting wet or setting the cart to rights.

An elderly peasant is struggling to do just that as you approach, but when he notices you, he hurls himself to the road at your feet, his forehead pressed to the dust. "Honoured samurai," he cries. "One thousand pardons for blocking your path! I will move the cart directly."

You could wait, but compassion is a virtue of a samurai. Besides, maybe he knows something useful about the village or the Championship.

And we're off, any questions as we go just shout out. Also, take a moment to describe your characters appearance in your first post

Kyo approaches the old man, he is tall, and somewhat lanky, but graceful in his stride as he makes his way. The winds blowing over the rice fields catches in his kamishimo, which portrays the mon of his clan upon the left breast, and matches a red and black color scheme. The sun glints off his mask, a full face portraiture of an Oni, although this mask is depicted as smiling, with an exaggerated nose and large grin with a tongue sticking out.

"One thousand pardons granted, old man. You appear to require some assistance in getting on your way. Perhaps we can trade, you can tell us what happened to result in your cart being upended, and im sure we would be able to help right you, and send you on your way."

His voice is warm, and gentle, like a rays of morning sun upon a sleeping face. He stands approximately 6 feet tall, and weighs in at about 145 pounds, and although he moves with grace, he does carry the gait of a person trying almost too hard to be approachable.
OOC:
Do i have to make a roll here to convince him to tell me anything. or would my stature as a "samurai" be enough to coax him to tell us. Also, i dont know if samurai would traditionally help a stranded peasant, but i definitely know im not gonna get my nice kamishomo wet. If i do have to roll, i will use the water approach to make a courtesy check.

I dont know what numbers on the traditional die correlate to what on the L5R die, so i will need some assistance there if anybody could, also the roll buggered and added 1 do my d12 roll for the skill.

Rolls

Water approach- Courtesy check - (1d12+1, 1d6)

1d12+1 : (12) + 1 = 13

1d6 : (6) = 6

Water approach- Courtesy check - (1d12+1, 1d6)

1d12+1 : (4) + 1 = 5

1d6 : (5) = 5

Mar 11, 2019 6:25 am
The man bows again, deeper if possible "A thousand, thousand pardons samurai sama! I became startled when I thought I saw someone standing in the middle of the river. A gust of wind caused me to fall into the river and knock my cart onto it's side"
OOC:
Looking at the situation you can tell it would be a simple matter for one or more or you all to right the cart but doing so, or simply walking through the mud around the cart to be on your way, would probably get you somewhat dirty.

A roll isn't needed at this stage but that first check would have been an Explosive Success on the skill die an Explosive Sccess + a Strife on the Ring die. Because your Ring value is 1 you would get to keep a maximum of one of the dice, if you chose either of those you can roll anouther of the same die type to roll again and then decide if you wanted to add that to the check.

I've added the conversion charts in a spoiler below, I'll try and remember to include them in my posts moving forwards

So would i get the option to just keep the explosive success and add one skill die to it? Its not needed now, but the way i understand it i would be able to just take the good dice right?

"Someone standing in the river you say?"

I will look over to the river and see how fast the current is going, is it moving fast? or is it more of a slow stream?

Yeah that's right. Once you have declared which dice you are keeping you can then roll for any explosive successes in there and decide if you want to add those dice to your kept pool or not as well. Certain circumstances may mean you'd want to keep the die with Strife, for example in a Conflict scene if you are in Fire Stance every Strife on a successful roll counts as a bonus success

awesome, so i would roll another d12, and if that gets an explosive, then another d12, repeating, and could add all those explosive successes theoretically.

Most of you, even though having never seen one, can immediately tell that Yoshi is a young Ise Zumi, a Tattooed Seeker monk from the Togashi family of the Dragon Clan. Very rarely do they venture far enough to be seen in these parts, so it is always a surprise (and maybe a reason to worry) seeing one. He wears as simple and plain garments as a samurai can have, with his shaven head, peaceful and unwavering expression and with strange and mystical ink patterns all over his uncovered skin.
OOC:
Hi Robb. I also feel RP for L5R may be more difficult than expected. Lot's of cultural stuff to take in! As far as I understood, compassion is not about helping stranded peasants as physical labour is beneath a samurai, but more about protecting those below you (as in providing security). I'll also add my thinking at the end of this post so you guys to guide me as I start L5R :)

"Worry not my good man, the wind may be strong but the sakura are still in bloom" Yoshi calms the elderly peasant with is deep voice, almost resonating with the works of creation. "This poor man is too old to move his cart on his own" thinks Yoshi as he calmly looks to the rice fields * searching for other peasants that may help, * judging how far the gates of Tsuma are, * how difficult it is to jump over the cart; as he says "I shall see that you arrive in Tsuma safely"

All the while Kyo intervenes. As the peasant mentions seeing someone in the river, Yoshi whispers "The water is runs deep indeed...", nods to himself while looking far into the waters in search for evidence of anyone. Yoshi wonders if there is any connection between the wind and water rings in this place and time. Are the peasant's vision and accident a coincidence, or are they more connected than it appears to the eye?

Isawa Aki is easily recognizable as a Shugenja of the Phoenix Clan by her flowing robes in bright reds and oranges. Her robes are crafted masterfully and her dark hair has been artfully prepared to make a perfect first impression at the festival. She is not carrying much. Besides her wooden staff, she only has some scrolls with her that betray her as a scholar.
Her demeanor is calm, collected and reserved - some might accuse her of arrogance - and she carries an air of authority with her.
OOC:
I am not very familiar with ancient Japanese culture so it's possible I'll act inappropriately sometimes. I'll try my best but if something I do seems wrong, let me know and I'll edit it.
"Good man, fortune is in your favor, it seems, since you encountered us." Aki's voice is calm and slow. She may still be young but she has taken her education to heart and her discipline and duty are visible in the way she carries herself, in her voice, even in the way her eyes focus on the elderly man in front of her. "You understand, of course, that it is not our place to right your cart but I am certain we can find someone to assist you." She lets her eyes wander, searching for other peasants that might be able to help with the cart. "But you said you saw someone standing in the river? What did this person look like? What where they doing?"
OOC:
How deep is the river? Would it be possible for someone to stand there?

(I've just now added my character sheet to the game. Once you accept it, I'll change this post to display Aki's name and portrait)

Utaku Kashita, riding behind the others, sees the circumstance ahead. Her fiery temper and pride causes a slight narrowing of her brows. Feeling a phantom stroke across her back, she slides off her spirited steed, and leans her yari against him, signing him to stay still. She walks forward, dipping her toe into the mud at the side of the road, and says, "Honored samurai. I fear my boots are already dirty so allow me to assist this man so that we may all proceed to the tournament."

She is athletic, a warrior, dressed in riding gear, but it is well made. A kerchief is tied around her forehead, and her dark Northern features are sharper than find in the soft South.

Aki slightly raises an eyebrow at Kashita's words. She steps back from the mud and observes as Kashita (and Yoshi) move to help the man.
She had kept an eye on the Unicorn since they had started travelling together and she was not surprised that it was her who forgot her place in this situation. However, she decided to keep those thoughts to herself and kept her face as composed and calm as it had been.
Mar 11, 2019 5:13 pm
Suteko's hand immediately rest on the grip of her katana, which it itself is hanging from her loosened belt. Despite her typical Lion mannerism - Walking broad-shouldered and attentive, head always high, and independently of height, it always seems that she is looking below her when talking to others -, her katana sports a Phoenix crest, of the Shiba family.

She eyes the situation in silence, never deeming the peasant an answer, her green eyes always on the lookout. Yet, her stare doesn't come off as intense. Quite the contrary, actually. It's cold. Distant.

It had been a good few weeks since she had separated herself from her Lord, and thankfully found a traveling group willing to accept her. Her Gaijin features are strong, after all. Her lips are fuller, her skin is paler, her hair looks denser and wilder, and her overall body looks more... Ample. Her name, as well, didn't help. Suteko. "Unwanted Child". But maybe that particular group of Samurai had a fonding for broken toys. One of the Unicorn didn't seem from around. She had never asked, however, and so she could never be certain.

When both the Dragon and the Unicorn move in to help the cart, a helpless sigh escape Suteko's lips. "Fine." She says, conceding as if someone had convinced her to do something she wasn't very keen on. As like a few of her companions, she was athletic and overconfident. Surely three of them could easily deal with the cart.
Mar 11, 2019 10:48 pm
Kyo watches the group as they move to adjust the cart. He is still squatting at the side of the road, his gaze straying from the river to the group of samurai hes been travelling with. He still hasnt quite figured them out yet, and he worries about what they may be thinking. He does find himself particularly intrigued by the Shugenja though, as hes never seen someone able to speak to spirits of the world so clearly and with such great effect.
Mar 12, 2019 6:08 pm
Kyo - you move over to the river bank and study the area for a few moments. The river moves at a fair pace but not one that seems to pose a danger if someone wished to cross it.

mcneils5 sent a note to RobbOgden93
Aki - the peasant looks somewhat troubled as he considers his words "Sama, I....I thought for a moment the figure was my former master, Doji Satsume. But....it is not possible. A trick of the light playing on my sorrow at my masters passing maybe"
OOC:
You all know that Doji Satsume was the former Emerald Champion who recently died. The Emerald Champion is the foremost magistrate, judge, and officer of the law in the Empire, as well as the Emperor's bodyguard and the commander of his legions. He is second only to the Emperor himself in all matters of law. His lieutenants, the Emerald Magistrates, investigate and punish crimes against the Emperor and the state.

The river appears fairly deep, you would gauge that someone in the middle of the river would be up to their neck in the water.

Character has been accepted
Kashita, Yoshi, Suteko - Between the three of you you quickly right the cart, the ground where it lay being considerably less muddy than the sides of the road you do not end up noticeably dirty. The peasant bows repeatedly and thanks you all profusely before quickly moving the cart to the side of the road to allow you all to pass before getting down onto the ground and prostrating themselves once more.
OOC:
Your way is clear to the village of Tsuma unless you wish to ask the peasant anymore questions?

Don't worry about your characters behaving in exactly the right manner at this stage. This is a learning experience not just for the mechanics but also the setting so if there's anything you're unsure of on either count just shout out.
Mar 12, 2019 6:34 pm
Yoshi smiles at the old man (when he stops bowing and thanking) and says in a meditative tone "My good man, the rain falls on both bonge and samurai alike" . Yoshi points at the cart. "We shall accompany you to Tsuma, where you can find shelter and repair the damages to your cart". After a brief pause he adds "Perhaps, as we walk the path that stands in front of us, you can tell us more about you and your former master, as well as of the happenings in the city?

Kyo will approach the old man, no longer squatting, and speak to him, "To your feet. You say that your master was Doji Satsume, Emerald champion of these lands. Yet here you are, pulling a cart down a muddy road. Tell me, what capacity did you serve in.?"

When the man rises to answer him, Kyo will quickly phrase an addendum to his questioning, quiet enough that the group may not overhear, but loud enough that the peasant will understand him clearly: The man you saw in the river. Was he a stern faced old man? Tell me. I must know."
OOC:
I am going to approach this conversation now with Fire, and courtesy
OOC:
Disregard this post. Yoshi seems to be after the same information i am, and he was posting first so we will follow his course of actions.
Instead of approaching the old man, Kyo will recoil from the water, practically leaping from his squat position before leaning back to investigate further. After a few seconds he will return to the collective group, and just listen in on what Yoshi is asking the old man.

Suteko looks noticeably annoyed as she wipes whatever small bunch dirt or mud was on her clothing. As the Unicorn, she initially ignores the peasant, but she doesn't walk away from him, especially when the Dragon starts talking. Once again, she doesn't try to hide how bothered she is about the whole situation.

"Typical of a Dragon, to take a decision for the group. Without consulting them." She speaks, her cold stare showing not much more than disapproval and contempt. She takes another look at the old man, as if she's judging his worthiness. She isn't, in actuality. She wouldn't mind having him join them that much assuming that she had a say. Even then, proudness aside, there is his cart to consider. Won't it slow us down?

But, it's not like there's a huge benefit in us reaching the town early. Plus, the old man does look particularly miserable. Maybe their presence would help him.

With a defeated, loud sigh, she stares at Yoshi in particular, the Dragon. "But very well. Assuming that everyone agrees, there's no reason for the rōjin to not come with us." She purposefully raises her tone to make the other members of the group aware of the situation and shoots a glare to both the Phoenix and the Unicorn — Aki, and Kashita — to gauge their reactions. She doesn't worry too much about Kyo, but both the girls are the ones that may show some resistance to the idea. That's what she thinks, at least.

Kashita recoils internally at the Lion's shooting glare. She feels her eyebrow twitch as if to frown, and she schools her face to serenity.

Her formidable grandmothers words echo in her head. Consider ever the tenets of Bushido, young Kashita. You will be well served by Courtesy, in ways that you can never fully appreciate. She considers her actions, foregoing her own rights of station to assist her companions.

Her thoughts upon her grandmother, Otaku Kamoko, who died... at the hands of a Matsu, if rumours were true.

She bows her head lightly to the Lion, as if in acknowledgement of a thank you.
Mar 12, 2019 8:27 pm
Aki's gaze turns to the river. Doji Satsume?, she thinks. This old peasant could not have seen the champion here. It is impossible. Or is it really?
She steps forward, right to the edge of the river and takes a respectful bow towards it. Closing her eyes and clearing her mind, she reaches out to the water, not physically but spiritually. The other samurai, the cart and peasant - they all seem to disappear around her until the only thing she still perceives is the river before her. It is thinkable that the man has truly seen something here. Aki doubts that it truly was the deceased master, but it could have been a spirit, maybe playing a trick on him, maybe trying to tell him something.
OOC:
Aki will try to sense a spiritual presence here. I am looking at my character booklet and if I interpret the rules correctly, I choose an appropriate skill and ring and roll the corresponding dice (D12 for skills, D6 for rings). For what I'm attempting, the appropriate skill seems to be Theology (3D12) and the ring probably either Water or Void (both are 2D6). I'll just try it the way I think it works. If that's wrong, disregard my rolls and let me know how to actually do it - or if this is even a thing I can do in this situation.
OOC:
Edit: I would keep my 12 (explosive success) and roll an additional D12
OOC:
Edit 2: I will keep my 12 and my 5 (Opportunity) - I'm not sure how explosive successes work. Do I get to keep that roll result on top of the two I can keep because of my ring or does that roll result have to be one of those two? If I can take it in addition to those two, I would also keep the 6 (Success with Strife). That would bring me to either 1 Success, 1 Opportunity or 2 Successes, 1 Opportunity, 1 Strife
Last edited March 12, 2019 8:36 pm

The peasant straightens slightly, still keeping his eyes downcast as he answers Yoshi's question but seems quite nervous not to further offend Suteko "My name is Ryu, and I was honoured to be the servant of Doji Satsume, the great Emerald Champion who enforced the law across the Empire. But sadly, my master died some weeks ago. Now I bring his personal effects to his brother-in-law, Kakita Toshimoko. Toshimoko-sama is the honoured head of the Kakita Dueling Academy in Tsuma." his head moves, raising his gaze slightly but still not looking the samurai in the eye "This is my duty Sama, please do not trouble yourselves any further. It is but a short distance to the village and the roads here are very safe. I spent my youth in this lovely village. It is home to the famous Kakita Dueling Academy, of course. The samurai who study there are unmatched in their skill with the blade. May I also humbly suggest the Red Lotus tea house, if you are of a mind to take your ease? Or were you looking for something else?"

As Ryu is talking with Yoshi Aki stands to one side, praying softly and entreating with the Kami. As she prays a sudden gust of wind scatters some papers from the cart into the air. One sheet dances away from the others and directly into Aki's hand. As she studies it she notices the writing upon it. "You have often told me you are a better father to my children than I am. I can only hope the Fortunes bless you—or curse you—with children of your own one day, that you could see the true challenges of fatherhood." It appears to be addressed to the writer’s brother-in-law, Kakita Toshimoko.
OOC:
For that roll you'd need 1 Success so you can disregard the one with the Strife if you want. On rolls you keep a minimum of one die and a maximum of your ring from your original dice pool (made up of relevant ring dice plus skill dice). Any 'extra' dice from Explosive Successes can be kept on top of the kept dice from your original dice pool. Hope that clarifies everything.

Kakita Toshimoko is quite a well known figure. He is the master sensei of the Kakita Dueling Academy (which is in Tsuma). Sometimes called the "Grey Crane," he takes relatively few students himself. Toshimoko spends more time in the capital of Otosan Uchi than in Tsuma, but he has ultimate responsibility for everything that happens in his school, and by extension at the Topaz Championship. You are expecting him to be presiding over the competition.

After studying the parchment for a moment, Aki will open her scroll container and place the paper inside. She doesn't do it quite openly but she will not actively hide it from anyone who is watching her.

Great RP opportunity resulting from the bizarre suggestion of just sitting down to have tea in the middle of the road, specially coming from the priestess of the group.

Kashita stares at the Phoenix, attempting to fathom her intent. Tea, here? "Isawa-san. While I share your admiration for this picturesque setting," she waves her hand elegantly at the lake, "Are you certain you might not want to arrive at Tsuma soonest? An omen regarding Kakita-sama may presage some urgency about our encounter with him?"
Mar 13, 2019 3:24 pm
As the cart begins to slowly roll down the road towards tsuma, Kyo will list towards the back of the group, slowly working round until he can slip onto the cart and sit down for the rest of the journey.
Mar 14, 2019 3:37 am
"Be it as it may—" Interjects Suteko on the matter over drinking tea, as she shoots a quick glance at the Phoenix who seems to be doing something to the river. She also acknowledges the Unicorn's nod with a small, satisfied grin. " I am in the opinion that we have plenty of time to talk this over as we make our way to Tsuma. So!" She says with a quick stomp against the ground as so we won't delay any further.

Doing a good deed is fine, offering the rōjin the honor of our presence is also fine, and while we don't really have any reason to rush, all this meaningless talk is starting to get on Suteko's nerves, her eyes squinching as they, eventually, start to resume their travel, in apathy. Once the feeling of wasting time washes over her heart, she will offer a comment on this business of the Red Lotus. "Tea is fine. I don't mind tea. But a true predator doesn't go for rabbits. It doesn't seek to simply satiate their thirst or hunger, but to bathe in its prey." She lowers her piercing gaze to the floor. "Won't a Sake House offer much more?"

Just brilliant! we're going with the (already corrected) tea mistake...
"Water satiates the body, but it is tea quenches the fire of the soul, sake well... does the earth shake and the wind blows as the void is emptied?" Yoshi thinks to himself "That phoenix shugenja... Isawa was it? I can see that she is a woman of earthly taste (as in the ring not *that*) and unshakable tranquility". Deep in his thoughts, Yoshi quickly forgets about Isawa's "suspicious" actions by the river.
OOC:
And apparently Kyo is on the cart, so Ryu is going with us either he likes it or not!

Walking next to the old man, Yoshi keeps the conversation going until they arrive at Tsuma's gates (for the great dismay of Suteko and Utako). "I have heard rumors of the passing of your master, Doji-sama. Is there any truth to be listed?"

Uuuh hold on, wasn't the mistake that people thought we were going to stop and drink tea now? Suteko is exclusively talking about going for drinks once they get to Tsumo 🤔

bowlofspinach misread that we could drink Red Lotus tea with the old man instead of going to the city's tea house. So Isawa Aki basically said: good idea lets have some tea right here with the peasant. He deleted and rewrote it once me and mcneils5 mentioned it (this was very quickly so most probably missed it), but Qralloq continued with the idea leading everyone to act on it :)

The way I read it, some addressed that misunderstanding but it has been dismissed. People just want to get to the city. I could even edit the section back in to not screw up continuity. I had hoped I could get rid of it before anyone responds to it.
The way I see it, we're now back on the road, travelling with the old man, apparently

same here. Ready for the city! (I don't think you need to re-edit it, the discontinuity has been very well documented)

I think for claritys sake we should all just state our current stance and what we intend to do. Kyo is sitting on the back of the old mans cart, resting his weary feet while the group traverses the road. He eagerly awaits the groups arrival in tsuma.

If the old man is struggling to move the cart with Kyo on it, then he will get off and walk.
Mar 14, 2019 4:43 pm
Aki will rejoin the group and walk next to the cart. She gives Kyo a disapproving look but does not say anything. She stays close to the old man, hoping to listen in on any conversations to hear more about his master, but she will not start a conversation with him herself.

Right, Kashita is sitting on her horse, ready for the city. Forget the tea, let's just retcon ignore that whole thing.

All things dealt with, Suteko walks in front of the group — In front of the cart as well, assuming that it's not faster than her. Her vigilant eyes rest on the road, while she moves with imposing grace.
Mar 15, 2019 9:37 pm
As Ryo leads the cart along he keeps his eyes downcast. With some of you ahead of him and some following the cart (and one sitting on the back) the peasant looks distinctly uncomfortable as he tries to respond to Yoshi's question "I am sure whatever Sama has heard is correct.".
OOC:
The social divide in Rokugan is wide and insurmountable. For someone of the Ryu's caste to even hint that they are talking disrespectfully of a Samurai is often a swift route to the afterlife. He would normally have expected to have waited at the side of the road for you all to pass, even though he apparently served a very high ranked individual mixing directly with his superiors in this manner is definitely far outside his normal experience.

Yeah probably for the best to retcon that little segment (can happen from time to time on a PbP game). I'm also going to move things along to the next scene as you've gotten just about as much out of Ryu as you can
The rest of your journey takes but a few hours. Ryu begins to get increasingly uncomfortable at any questions directed to him, keeping his answers short and respectful but ultimately unenlightening and you all decide it best to leave him to his duties as you finally come into sight of Tsuma.
The village buzzes with activity today, as peasants and samurai move along the street on their business. The peasants all bow and wait for you to pass, while the samurai rush by you without a second glance. Streamers are affixed to trees, paper lanterns in the colors of the Great Clans hang from posts, carp kites fly in the air, and glass chimes sing in the breeze, all welcoming contestants, observers, and other visitors to this year's Topaz Championship.
You part from Ryu who prostrates himself once more as you leave him and quickly make your way to the town magistrate’s estate to formally register for the tournament. Once done you are directed to the House of the Laughing Carp, the tea house and inn housing the contestants. As you step into the courtyard of the inn, a loud voice catches your attention.
"This is unacceptable!" bellows a lean, tall young man, still dusty from the road. His sea green attire and unfamiliar family crest mark him as a samurai of a Minor Clan. The samurai is in mid-argument with the innkeeper, an utterly implacable peasant woman.
"Forgive me, honored samurai," she says, very dryly. "All my rooms are spoken for. If I should give you a room, I must displace another samurai, one who made these arrangements in advance. Perhaps you could try another boarding house in the village?"
"They are all full," the samurai hisses, struggling to regain his composure. The innkeeper notices your arrival, and quickly turns to you and bows.
"Honored guests," she says, apparently recognizing you by your clan mon. "Your rooms are waiting."
Mar 16, 2019 2:34 am
Suteko's posture visibly relax once the group gets in the village, her wrist casually resting on the tip of her katana's handle. A soft, nostalgic smile appears on her face as they make their way to the House of the Laughing Carp, taking in the picturesqueness of Tsuma with a mudded glee: Her cruel, piercing gaze creating an elegant contrast. At some point, she even slows down and closes her eyes, listening carefully to the chimes.

She only shoots a glance to the rōjin as he goes on his way. Once he's relatively far away, the gaijin sighs, a tired and annoyed frown creeping in. "Aren't we an honorable troupe of Samurai?" There's a small hint of cynicism in her words as if being honorable isn't one of the most important virtues of the Bushido. She doesn't give much room for interrogation, however, cocking her head to her companion's side. "Let's go to the Laughing Carp."

Eventually finding themselves stepping into the Tea House, Suteko makes sure to be the first to do so. She overhears the Samurai screaming at the innkeeper, causing her to raise an eyebrow in annoyance, her rested wristed playing with the tip of her katana as she unconsciously swirls it around.

Her eyes narrow on the innkeeper when the man repeats what she just heard: That there are no rooms left. Of course, that is untrue to us. Pft, as if we were going to arrive without making reservations. She starts to approach the woman, her chin raised as always when she stops at the samurai's side. She only offers him the smallest of nods, not even turning to face the man. When she's about to keep walking, she stops, again. Suteko sighs, this time fully shooting her typical angry glare at the man. "Don't be loud like a peasant." With that, she finally decides to move on to the innkeeper.

"Will you show it to us, then?" She asks the woman, her eyes respectfully softening on her.

Kashita rides to the Laughing Carp with the others, bringing up the rear. She watches them, attempting to understand who they really were, and what providence had brought them together for this journey. "The Kami are at odds with the Fortunes, and we are but toys in their game," her grandmother once told her. She tilts her head sideways, and her her eyes flick to the Lion. Don't focus too much on her, she thinks, lest you fail to see the bigger picture. She schools her face into serenity, starting blankly as her mind pieces it together, but it is incomplete.

They did not acknowledge my sacrifice for courtesy to them. Perhaps they aren't as sophisticated as I expected.

At the inn, she hears the minor bushi fail to berate a peasant. Like a smaller dog, he could be dangerous, a backbiter, seeking advantage in a game only he cares about. The Lion's words... I would not have used that tack. Still, if he is a threat, best reveal that now; perhaps she seeks to probe him for a false sense of vengeance. She nods imperceptibly, grudgingly. She is one to watch.

Sliding off her horse, she ties her yari to the saddle with swift fingers, and rubs her fetlock, checking for any sign of the road. Satisfied, she signals for her to stay, and moves to watch the minor samurai for signs of hotheadedness. She signals to the peasant innkeeper. "Do you have a stable hand?"

As Yoshi walks into Tsuma, he quickly notices all the people crowding the city and all the colors of the kites and lanterns. He stops briefly, taking him the clear contrast between classes, so obvious in this town: even though he was invisible for the other samurai, he was unreachably superior to all the peasants. Sensei says these are the struggles of the Kharmic Wheel. I wonder.... He has obviously seem it all before, but the scale of it all... that was new. How can one be at peace in such a place! he thinks to himself, focusing on some memory from the tranquility found in the High House of Light. He unconsciously followed the others to the tournament registry. He never really understood why Togashi Yokuni, the Champion of the Dragon Clan, would bother personally asking him to join this gempuku... this is not something the Ise Zumi care about... Is this another punishment because of Togashi Kaie he wondered.

He walks in silence to the House of the Laughing Carp, following the group. In fact he did not say a work (or shared any of his insights) the whole time he was in Tsuma. He simply looked around, patiently taking in this reality so different to his own. His thoughts were disturbed by someone's shouting when he entered the inn. He was distracted, so he did not understand the words. Taking his time to access the situation he calmly approaches the inn keeper. That lion is indeed a raging fire. May it would be wise to approach her as if of water he thinks as Matsu shoots her angry glare at the other samurai. The other's indifference to this man is somewhat socking to him. "Thank you for the rooms my good woman. What seems to be the problem here?". Yoshi looks at the samurai, not recognizing his clan. Most honorable sir, I beg your pardon, but I fail to recognize your family mon. Where would you hail from, may I ask?

Aki spends the journey deep in thought about the encounter at the river. Had she really communicated with the spirit of the deceased Emerald Champion? And what was the purpose of the message the spirit had given to her? She would have to find a way to talk to Kakita Toshimoko about this.
She barely acknowledges when the group arrives at the village, only giving the barest farewell to the peasant as they part ways.
Only during the registration to the tournament does Aki wake from her thoughts

When the group enters the Laughing Carp and the described situation plays out, Aki walks up to the enraged samurai. She greets him politely and then says calmly: "I see that you are forced to deal with an unfortunate situation caused by insufficient foreplanning." Her voice is soothing and polite, despite the criticism in her words. "If you were to compose yourself, I am certain an adequate solution would come to you. There is no need to act in such an unbecoming manner. I am going to meditate for a while. There are things I need to comtemplate. If you wish, you can join me."
Mar 18, 2019 2:54 pm
The young man stiffens noticably at Suteko's comment as the innkeeper bows to you all "Of course Sama, it will be just a moment" she says in response to Suteko and Kashita before turning to Yoshi "As I have explained to the honoured samurai all of my rooms are spoken for, if I was to give up one of my rooms for him I must displace another samurai which is not possible for me to do". For the moment the samurai seems too emotional, almost on the verge of some sort of breakdown, and does not respond to Yoshi.
OOC:
Ok, there are several things happening here that may have an impact. I'll give a few suggestions with rolls based on the interactions so far and stuff mentioned in the adventure, in the event of a couple of things possibly conflicting I'll resolve things in the order of most to least kept successes.

If you are trying to tip the samurai over the edge into an outburst you need to make a TN 2 Command (Fire) check.
If you are trying to get the innkeeper to change their position make a TN 2 Courtesy (Water) check.
If you are trying to calm the samurai down then make a TN 2 Courtesy (Earth) check.

Feel free to suggest another course of action if you have something in mind and just make an appropriate roll (we can always re-roll things if what you pick doesn't really marry up with the roll)

"To think of meditating in such a situation. Curious one this shugenja.. a bit like Kaie-sama used to be. But that won't help here". As the innkeeper prepares to show the rooms and stables to Otaku and Matsu, Yoshi quickly demands Good woman, would there be a monastery in this town? Could you spare a boy for a little errand?. He then turns to the minor samurai. "You must contain yourself. Let's sit down here and have a tea. Breath slowing. Now, let's start by telling me your name?". Knowing how Isawa appreciates a good tea, he adds Would the lady like to join us?.
OOC:
earth: 3; courtesy: 0... Roll 2 strives (man I feel stressed by the whole situation, one wrong move and this samurai blows up dishonorably!), 2 successes and an explosive. Add one opportunity. So that passed right? He is calm now? Can I use the opportunity to check if this samurai is an honorable and trustworthy person, maybe recalling something about his clan that let's me know this?

Suteko stares coldly at the Phoenix and the Dragon, her left eyebrow barely raising in disapproval of their actions. Not that she cares that the shungenja wants to waste her time meditating, but rather that they're either trying to spinelessly get him to calm down — As if a functional adult and a Samurai isn't expected to naturally do something about the problem he's facing rather than crying about it — or, worse, that they're actually taking pity on him.

She only shows her discontent by sighing, loudly and hopelessly, as she rolls her eyes to face someone else: The unicorn, Otaku Kashita. Suteko staring her straight to the eyes is an accident, but admittedly, Suteko maybe enjoyed her company the most. Yes, because she didn't speak much, but still. She keeps glaring her with empty eyes for a few seconds until she decides that they should probably fraternize in some way. If the Dragon and the Phoenix are going to fly around a muddled moon together, then the Lion will exercise as well.

"The first thing you do after so many days of travel is to make sure that that horse of yours is well taken care of." Says the Matsu, with her analytical gaze, when a soft, apparently taunting smile creeps in. She's gauging her, however, rather than simply taunting. "The man that you come to love will be special indeed." She simply takes in her reaction, but don't give her enough time to respond to that particular phrase. "Aren't you tired? Personally, a bath is the first thing I'll do". She raises her chin when she shoots a glance to both her other companions, the Dragon and the Phoenix. "When they're done, that is." She doesn't hold her stare for very long, and simply sigh defeatedly.

Yoshi - The innkeeper bows "We do not have a monastery in Tsuma I am afraid Sama. There is a Temple to Amatseru and a shrine to the fortunes to the north if either of those would be suitable?" whilst talking she gestures and one of her servants comes over, bowing deeply to each of you in turn "My staff are at your disposal Sama" she says with a smile.

Yoshi, Aki - both of your words and the fact that Suteko has relented in her direct criticism seem to reach the young samurai. He turns slightly and takes a deep, calming breath before turning back to you both "Forgive me, I am Hitoshi of the Mantis clan. I am here to compete in the Topaz Championship." he seems both proud and slightly surprised at the latter "I fear that complete calm will elude me for some time so I will decline your offer for the moment Isawa san, tea however sounds most agreeable whilst this....matter is resolved"
Mar 19, 2019 2:13 pm
Yoshi asks the servant to approach, whispers something to him, gives in same Zeni and the boys runs as quickly as he can off out of the inn.
Turning his attention back to Hitoshi "A man of the sea! You must remember that the water may look calm but it is as strong as the fire".
OOC:
And after another inspiring piece of monastic wisdom, Yoshi just keeps chatting and drinking tea. Questions Yoshi ask:
How was your travel?
How come you ended up here with no accommodation?"
You seem proud of being chosen to compete yet somehow surprised...
What do you know about the Topaz Championship?

Yoshi - the boy politely refuses payment before rushing off to carry out your wishes.

Yoshi, Aki - The conversation with Hitoshi goes well until you mention the lack of accommodation at which he stiffens, he does not react to the same way as he did previously but it obviously sets his mood back a touch. "Arrangements were made for my accommodation here by the magistrates representatives. This....peasant has obviously made a mistake but will not admit such". The innkeeper shakes her head slightly before interjecting "As I have already advised the young samurai I was not told to keep a room for him" as she speaks she gestures to a sheaf of documentation that presumably contains the details of everyone staying here.
OOC:
If you want to try to get the innkeeper to check their documents again you can make a suitable argument along with a TN 2 Courtesy (Water) check.
Suteko, Kashita - As you are standing to the side you take note of a couple of other figures in the room. A young man, tall with his face fixed in a seemingly perpetual frown, is studying the interaction going on with the Mantis and your companions - based on his Mon he is of the Shiba family of the Pheonix clan. The other, sitting with the phoenix, is another young man but this one is as short as the other is tall and despite being young his hair seems to be thinning - his Mon reveals him to be one of the Yasuki family of the Crab clan.

That's up to you really, would depend on how well you think your character relates with their wider Clan. Generally you would be civil to any Samurai but you would be safe to assume you would be warmer/better disposed towards those in your clan and even more so to those in your family.

Mar 22, 2019 6:01 pm
Kashita waits for the requested stable hand to attend to her horse, noting the other samurai within the tea house. She nods politely to each of them if they look at her, but otherwise attempts to focus on the beleaguered innkeeper.
Mar 24, 2019 10:09 am
A handful of servants come and bustle round you all, quickly attending to taking Kashita’s mount to the stables attached to the Kakita estates and also taking all of your personal effects to your quarters. Tea and sake has also been brought to you all and you are advised that the bath house is at your disposal to refresh yourselves after your journey.

Kashita - the two samurai see you glancing over. Whilst the Shiba simply nods in greeting, his face still fixed in a frown the Yasuki smiles and geustures to the empty seats at their table.

Yoshi - the young servant re-appears, quite out of breath as though he has been running to get back, and bows deeply before whispering to you "A thousand apologies sama, all of the other inns in town are full. I did enquire at the temple and they said they were simarly disposed, the only space they have is where the eta sometimes sleep if they are needed to work here overnight.". If anyone else over hears the conversation they do not make any sign that they have.
OOC:
The eta are the lowest of the low in society, a lot of samurai consider them barely above animals and even other peasants look down on them. They deal with the jobs that are considered dirty (to the point that doing such tasks leaves a stain on the soul) such as handling the dead. Whilst there’s nothing stopping you from sleeping where they do you would probably take a Glory and Honour hit for doing so.

Suteko's expression falters in a bothered frown when Kashita simply ignores her and walks away to the table with the Shiba and the Crab. Had she... Not heard Lion? Still, she wasn't going to stand there doing nothing. Before the Unicorn even waves toward the rest, Suteko abandons her vigilance over the matter of the Mantis, with hopes that the Dragon wasn't accidentally going to offer any of our beds to that excuse of Samurai, and follows her. What she says to him causes Suteko to shoot an annoyed glance. She wouldn't have left her without saying anything if she truly cared about her other people's opinions.

Suteko wondered for a quick second why they were approaching the table. Had they invited us, then? She hadn't realized. "Don't be obtuse. I'm sure they noticed our big group when we arrived, they wouldn't have invited us otherwise." The Lion's words are snappishly cold and she still looks annoyed at the Unicorn's attitude. Suteko herself won't sit until the Samurai explicitly asks her to, just to make sure she is actually welcomed there. Assuming they do, she makes sure to grab the hilt of her katana tight, swaying it to the left so she won't accidentally sit on its holster, exposing its Phoenix mon despite Suteko clearly being a Lion. She does that on purpose, veiled by evident false caution, meaning to gauge the Shiba's reaction if any; her muddled green eyes narrowing on him.

Yoshi - the innkeeper bows even lower "I do not know why the honourable samurai's name was removed from the list. These documents were provided to me from the Daimiyo's household, I was not aware of any changes when these were handed to me. I will prepare my rooms for Hitoshi Sama, I will make other arrangements" she bows again before withdrawing to make the necessary arrangements.

Hitoshi seems in a much better mood and inclines is head towards you and speaks quietly to you "Thank you my friend, I admit I almost let my emotions get the better of me when I arrived. Despite having earned my place in the tournament some have made it clear they do not feel I have a place here and I feared....well, I am in your debt for resolving this matter" he says and bows to you once more.
Kyo - you take a position to watch the servants go about their duties and listen to the conversations in the room. Asides from the odd muttering from some of the servants that they obviously do not think they can be overheard (general complaints about the extra work they are having to do due to the tournament) you do not pick up on anything untoward from the other guests.

You can keep up to your ring value in dice (so in this case 3) from your initial pool but you only need to keep a minimum of one dice. In order to roll any additional dice for explosive successes you need to declare you are keeping those dice first and then roll the additional dice and decide if you are adding those to the kept dice (these don't count towards your limit of kept dice though).
You wouldn't handle any of the unpacking yourself, it would be unseemly for a samurai to do such menial work - there may be occasions when it would be useful to pass as a servant or peasant but you certainly wouldn't want any other samurai to find out you'd done such a low thing.

Kashita, Aki, Suteko - the grinning Yasuki "Of course, of course. There is more than enough room and you are all more than welcome to join us.". As you all take a seat Aki introduces herself to the Shiba who bows slightly to her in turn "Greetings Aki-san, I am Shiba Toya" he says in a rough, gravelly voice that if anything seems to compliment his dour countenance "My companion here is Yasuki Jun." Jun smiles and bows slightly to you all as Toya continues "I assume we are all to be fellow contestants in the Topaz Championship? It is good to meet those who have also earned their place here" as he says this his eyes dart in Hitoshi's direction giving you a clear indication on his thoughts of the Mantis. Hitoshi and the others do not appear to have heard Toya's comment.
Mar 27, 2019 2:44 am
"Otaku Kashita." She introduces the others. "Matsu Suteko, Bayushi Kyo, Iuchi Odayaka, Isawa Aki, Togashi Yoshi." She sits politely with the others. "Yes, we are here for the tournament. It should be quite the spectacle and challenge."
Mar 27, 2019 7:11 am
Yoshi thanks the innkeeper for her helpfulness and turns back to Hitoshi "Do not you give it any more thoughts. It is good to see that all is arranged. You have proven yourself worthy joining the tournament, and that is what matters. The waves seem week but they can take the strongest of the earths". After sorting out the mantis issue, Yoshi stays with Hitoshi drinking his tea and chit-chatting about the tournament and what Hitoshi thinks about it. Yoshi's attention is also caught up but Aki standing up and leaving. He looks around to see the other guests as he thinks to himself "The tiger does not mix with the boar... Sensei was right, the celestial order is strong even among samurai

Kashita, Aki, Suteko - Toya and Jun both incline their heads in a slight bow to you all at Kashita's introductions. Jun seems to be avoiding the tea and liberally enjoying the sake despite Toya's disapproving glances. Jun laughs in a friendly manner at Kashita's comment "Indeed! Even being selected brings much honor to our families. I have heard the coming days will be quite challenging for us, if the stories I have heard of past championships are anything to go on". Whilst Jun talks Toya sips at his tea, his sombre countenance only making Jun's gregariousness the more pronounced.

Yoshi - now the matter of the accommodation has been resolve Hitoshi is in a much better mood and happily engages you in conversation. He tells you says he served on a number of Mantis ships in his youth (Fortunate Turtle and Susano-O) and that he's "capable" with a bow. He admits he was surprised to be invited to the Championship, but says he's eager to prove that he is as worthy as a Great Clan samurai.

After listening to the servants talk amongst themselves and examining the inn, Kyo will find where yoshi is drinking tea and sit quietly next to him, pooring a glass of tea and stretching his joints.

"What a journey we have had so far, hmm?" he asks the monk, failing to recognize the spiritual nature of this particular tea ceremony.
Mar 29, 2019 6:06 pm
As Kyo is sitting down, Yoshi quietly offers some tea. Ah yes indeed. Quite a travel it has been. He turns the attention to the mantis Have you met Hitoshi? He’s also participating in the tournament. A worthy opponent with the bow it would seem

"Oh?" Teases Suteko, arching her eyebrow with a small smile, that accidentally may come off as cold. Her eyes join the Shiba's quick stare to the Mantis, Hitoshi. "Indeed." She agrees, despite the Shiba being a Shiba. She remains silent for the moment while the Otaku takes the lead, but her eyes do narrow at the Crab's comment.

"Truly? Hm... You have my attention." She says, the first two words almost as whispers to herself, carefully leaning forward with interest while her icy glare cools off with curiosity. "Share a tale of the hardest challenge you've heard about. I am curious about the legitimacy over the supposed difficulty." While her words may sound like a demand, something improper for a Samurai to simply do to another Samurai just because, her tone is more fraternal, similar to how she normally address her own companions.
Mar 31, 2019 4:28 pm
Kashita leans back and twiddles her tea cup. She looks up at the southerners. "Indeed. The Yasuki fight for more than honor. All know they're in a delicate position, situated between the fierce rivalry of Crab and Crane. Your meditation and arbitration skills are legendary, even in the north. I can only assume your finesse with a blade is equally marvellous." She smiles innocently. "We Otaku are not known for subtleties."
Apr 2, 2019 2:45 pm
Kashita, Aki, Suteko - if Jun takes any offence at Suteko's directness he doesn't show it, the easy smile not leaving his face. Turning to Kashita he nods "Neither are us Crab, a certain directness is refreshing when in....other clans lands. Whilst I am skilled in some areas alas my skill with a blade is not as advanced as many of the rest of our fellow competitors. My skills lie more with assisting my clan at court than on the battlefield." he turns back to Suteko "But we were talking of the history of this fine contest, let me think..." his gaze turns for a moment to regard Hitoshi "One that comes to mind of particular relevance to this years tournament, given the somewhat unusual make up of the competitors, is the story of Tetsuken of the Mantis who won the championship in the 7th century" he proceeds to tell the tale of the Mantis samurai who won the Topaz Championship, sailed many foreign lands and returned to become the Mantis Clan Champion before finally leading a fleet to intercept a Shadowlands fleet who were sailing for Otosan Uchi (the capital of the Empire), giving his life as he sailed his vessel into the heart of the enemy fleet to hold them in position whilst the remainder of his fleet systematically destroyed the Shadowlands vessels. It is rare for a samurai of a minor clan to compete in the championship and virtually unheard of for one to win but who knows, perhaps this is the year for history to repeat itself"

I must say that assassination and intrigue aside, we have found Rokugan to be most welcoming. Perhaps they appreciate our bluntness, too? A rock to counter the hard place of the Carpenters Wall?"

Jun chuckles amiably "Well, whilst the Mantis are not a Great Clan they do have the distinction of being the oldest of the Minor clans. They were formed in the year 80 when Kaimetsu-Uo was passed over for leadership of the Crab and...." he trails off as Toya gently lays a hand upon the sleeve of his kimono. "Our fellow competitors here have had a long journey and are doubtless weary from the road. Perhaps the history lesson could wait for another time?" Toya says gently. Jun smiles and inclines his head to everyone at the table "Of course. Let us take our ease for the rest of the evening so we are rested for tomorrows tests" as he finishes he takes another drink of tea.

The next few hours pass without incident and you all enjoy the now quite relaxed atmosphere within the House of the Laughing Carp until one by one you seek your rooms.

You are not sure how long has passed before you are awoken with no clear sense of why, and find that light is shining in the courtyard outside the paper screen door of your room. Emerging, you find a stern-faced older man kneeling by a formal tea set at a low table in the center of the courtyard. Moonlight shimmers on his blue-and-emerald silk kimono as he gestures for you to join him.
"Sit by me," he says. "Who will pour the tea?" You realize with a shock that this is Doji Satsume, the dead Emerald Champion. It appears he wants you to perform a tea ceremony, and it may not be wise to argue with a ghost.

Yoshi follows the strange light to the courtyard, still confused by felling so suddenly awake. As he steps outside the paper screen door, he looks up, trying to judge how far into the night it is by the moon and starts. Then he looks around to find out who else is awake, seeing a mysterious older man kneeling by a formal tea set. "A tea ceremony so deep into the night?" he wonders who would do such a thing. Then it hits him! That is the dead Emerald Champion! Old Ryu was right, it was master Doji Satsume he saw by the river earlier today!

Yoshi approaches Doji silently and sits next to him, joining the strange tea ceremony and preparing to pour the tea and initiating the ceremony,

When Aki sees the man in the blue and emerald kimono, she freezes. Her thoughts have been dwelling on this man for hours so for a moment, she is convinced that she is either hallucinating or simply mistaking another man's face for his. It takes her a few seconds to gather herself and realize that she is not mistaking and this is truly the Emerald Champion, Doji Satsume. She quickly reaches into her room to pick up the scroll case with the letter the spirit gave her at the river, then she walks into the courtyard. A thousand questions are burning in her mind but she suppresses them for now. Let the spirit state his reason for being here first before interrogating him. She bows respectfully to the master and then sits down to join the ceremony.
Apr 11, 2019 3:30 pm
Otaku wakes with a wild gasp as if breaking from under water. She wraps her kimono around her and steps out. Seeing the tea ceremony prepared and the Doji's words, she straightens herself, and steps forward with small dainty steps, kneeling delicately at the table. She bows gently mainly with her head.

Questions burn in her mind, but she schools her thoughts. Courtesy dictates that the tea ceremony be followed in strictest measure before conversation can flow.

The spectral figure chuckles as it gestures to the tea "If I am dead Bayushi San, then who is enjoying this tea?". He holds the cup to his nose and appears to sniff "Ah, a lovely brew."

Yoshi, Aki, Kashita - you all think back to your studies and you recall that ghosts are the spirits of ancestors unable, for some reason, to move on to the afterlife of Yomi or Meido. Helping the ghost resolve its unfinished business can help it pass on to take its place among the ancestors.

Yoshi additionally remembers that ghosts are traditionally at least a little cryptic, and there is likely more to the story than Satsume‘s shade is letting on. Yoshi get's the impression that Satsume is also assessing and weighing you all and is waiting to see how you deal with this situation.

He briefly waits in silence, showing polite reverence before he continues "We have met you servent, Kyo, earlier today as we traveled to Tsuma, by the river road. A good, honorable man if I may add". May 3, 2019 1:04 pm

Aki turns back to Satsume and says: "Oh, it was just a short interaction. I would hardly expect the Emerald Champion to remember this little talk with someone who is not even a true samurai yet. However, I could never forget the great honor of speaking with you." She wants to ask about the note but she does not want to upset him by speaking out of line so she decides to wait with that. While still mainly focusing on the master, she glances at Yoshi from time to time, wanting to find out his thoughts on the note.
May 4, 2019 8:22 pm
"Brief indeed it was. Only noteworthy for the honor of the great Emerald Champion’s presence" I pause in reverence, almost as if bowing again. "I think Kyo mentioned visiting Kakita Toshimoko-sama. Doji Satsume thinks for a moment before responding "I do not recall why he was coming to see my brother in law, the thought seems....elusive". He appears to take another drink of his tea before adopting a more imperious demeanour "The night is passing us by and I have a task to set before you all. I want you to ensure Hitoshi, the young Mantis, survives the Topaz Championship. I want to see that he becomes a samurai worthy of his father." he takes another sip of the tea whilst studying you all for a response.
May 5, 2019 1:04 pm
"The young mantis, Hitoshi, Doji-sama? It is curious that a man of your golden reputation would be interested in the fate of such a one. Ack, not sure how I missed this. Which Scholar skill were you trying to leverage for this? Culture and Government both seem like suitable candidates but will give slightly different answers dependent on which one you want to leverage.

At the moment we're in a Narrative scene so Opportunities don't come into play much other than for slight narrative tweaks to your action (as I read it at any rate)

Ok, I've taken the summary of the two skills and highlighted the areas I think are most relevant. Basically Culture would let you recall information based on recent events and any individuals that may be relevant whereas Government would be focused more on the grander manoeuvrings between the Mantis Clan and other Clans or groups.

It would be down to you to suggest something generally (although if you're struggling for idea's feel free to crowd source them ;)
