1.0 - Daybreak

The sun splits the horizon, brilliant white rays clattering into the streets to find a busy city already teeming with activity. Merchants unfurl their canopies, children chase each other through the marketplace stalls, and the Aeon Priests perform their morningsong ritual, welcoming both the literal and metaphorical illumination of the sun. They return through the temple doors, which always sit open, for discoveries can arrive at all hours of the day, or during certain hours which never belonged to our view of Time at all.

You weave your way through the marketplace to the temple, and navigate to the sacristy where Illisan asked to meet with you. He greets you as you arrive, and offers you to partake of the tea service which he has prepared on a low table. Numeneric candles light the table, their baseplates collecting an ever-growing pile of waxy dust as their ultradimensional fuel source deposits its remnants on this side of reality. Illisan avoids discussing business until all four of you arrive.

OOC: Please feel free to detail your morning and your trip through the market. You don't know the specifics of Illisan's request, but you can safely assume he wishes you to explore some place or some thing outside the borders of the city.

It wasn't the child’s fault. She was merely playing with her siblings as they chased her about the marketplace. Ducking in and out of the early morning crowd she was quickly outpacing her brothers as they struggled to keep up. She never even saw the stranger as she collided into his leg and was sent sprawling to the ground.

Kleas' scowled glare was enough to send the brothers scurrying off as they left their little sister to fend for herself. Scowled glares came easy to Kleas as he had seen them more times than he cared to remember from the elders of his old village. Today, however, would have to be different. Varázslat, his one remaining friend, had gone out of his way to arrange for him to meet with the Aeon Priest and the last thing Kleas wanted to do was to ruin this opportunity with his awkward disposition.

Turning his attention to the young girl lying at his feet, Kleas did his best to contort his face into something that vaguely resembled a smile, but before he could manage the child had risen up and delivered a sharp blow to the side of his knee. “Watch where you’re walking you abhuman!” she yelled as she quickly sped off to rejoin her brothers. “Well, you're off to a great start.” Kleas sighed to himself as he continued his way through the marketplace towards the Aeon Temple.

Temples had always made him uncomfortable and it didn't take long for the familiar nervousness to wash over him as he paused before the open temple doors. He had never understood the purpose of the daily temple rituals that he was forced to take part in as a child but learned quickly that questioning them had severe and immediate consequences. Cursing Varázslat quietly under his breath for sending him to such a place Kleas did his best to muster what little composure he could as he entered the building. "May I help you?" asked a young woman, breaking the silence, as Kleas entered the altar room. "Ummm, my name is Kleas Huszár and I'm looking for Illisan. I understand that he may have some work for me." "Yes, please, right this way, he's been expecting you..."

Rigel wandered through the market stalls towards the temple with a sense of urgency. Normally he would take advantage of an opportunity to peruse the goods at a market. He was always curious what oddities had been dug from the ground in an area and might be for sale. Crowded markets also offered an opportunity to make a little money. Rigel could distract people with simple magic tricks and use the misdirection to lift their belongings. Today was different though since he had a scheduled meeting with Illisan. The purpose of the meeting was not made clear, but a person like Illisan always had leads on new sites to explore. Rigel's curiosity would never allow him to pass up on the chance for this kind of job. He liked to arrive at a meeting before any of the other attendees. That way he could get a good look at the others as they arrived.

Axel had never been one to be in a hurry, so when his meeting with Illisan approached, he left plenty early to account for the time he would spend exploring along the way. You could live in a city like this for years and continue discovering new places, new people, and with any luck, new opportunities. After walking around the market for what seemed like just a few moments (but was really closer to an hour), Axel sat down outside a small eatery for a brief rest and to watch the people go by.

Watching children at play brought joy to Axel's otherwise cold, logical heart. No worries about not having enough shins or whether they would be devoured by the Iron Wind. As he sat outside the eatery, Axel watched a group of siblings chasing each other through the crowded market. A little girl, in particular, was maintaining a sizable lead on her brothers. Speed, however, has its limits, and Axel saw what was coming before the girl did. She turned her head to see how far ahead she was, and ran full-speed into one of the largest, most intimidating figures Axel had ever seen in this market. The Glaive {you can strike this if Axel wouldn't know if a person was a Glaive on appearance only} scowled at the little girl, and Axel feared what would come next. Before the Glaive could react, the little girl yelled at him to watch where he was going and kicked him in the leg before running off. Axel watched the Glaive mutter to himself, then walk off in the direction of the Aeon Temple. Axel considered the idea that this character may also have been on his way to a meeting with Illisan, and realized that he had used up all the spare time he had allotted for before his appointment at the temple.

Axel made his way promptly to the temple, where two others appeared to also be waiting for Illisan. The Glaive from the incident at the market was there, as well as another that Axel had never seen before. Axel looked around the temple while waiting for Illisan, but made sure never to have his back to the other two attendees.

Rigel stood and watched as two others entered the temple and asked after Illisan. Either this was going to be a big job or they would be in direct competition. Ultimately it didn't matter. Bigger jobs meant bigger loot and competition was good for testing your skills. In a perfect world he would get the opportunity for both.

The first person to enter after him looked to be a scrapper, definitely more than a match for Rigel if it came to a fight. They were almost certainly a glaive; you could tell by the way they carried themselves. Their presence told Rigel that this might be a little more complicated than digging for numenera. The second person was no glaive, but they looked just as dangerous. Cold, calculating eyes seemed to measure up every bit of the temple, including Rigel himself before moving to a position where he could watch the two others. This was a person with some trust issues.

Rigel picked some dirt from his fingernails and decided it was time to join the group. He removed himself from his perch against the temple wall and moved toward the others.
