Chapter III: Reunited

Once she's alone again in the ready room, Cass writes a response to Captain FF2FVFV2VV22F of the Four.

Thank you for the invitation to observe the procedure. I will attend with a few of my crew, as you've suggested.

I wish to personally express again my gratitude for your willingness to return my crew member, and for the small steps we have both taken toward establishing some common ground between our peoples. That said, I must stress that neither I nor my crew will feel comfortable attending the procedure unarmed. While my intention is to underscore a desire for peace, we know firsthand that your people are capable of killing us with remarkable ease, even unarmed. So I formally and respectfully request to be allowed sidearms aboard your ship, which will remain holstered except in the event of an act of aggression against us. I encourage you to think of this as symbolic of our mutual respect.

Signed,
Commander Shawna Cassano

Cass

You quickly receive a reply:
You are welcome to carry weapons but if any member of your delegations draws their weapon unprovoked, we will consider that a hostile action and break off peaceful negotiations immediately.
We are lowering our shields now so you can beam over at your convenience. If you decide to use this opportunity to destroy us, know that this system is being observed and that the rest of my people are going to find out about it.

Signed,
FF2FVFV2VV22F
OOC:
Cass, can you give me a list of everyone you're taking on your team? Also, your rank is Commander, not Lt. Commander
Kendall
OOC:
You got a Laser Feeling, I'm just going to answer your question for it: You already have the tranquilizer darts which seem very effective. You won't be able to separate host and parasite without surgery or killing at least one of them. Maybe it would be possible to invent a device that could temporarily stun the parasite while leaving the host conscious. That would give you some short window to talk to the host, assuming that they have not been linked for long enough for the parasite to sever most connections of the host's brain to their body, in which case this would probably kill the host

Belka says: "You can return to work but keep someone around, just in case. Your injuries were severe and I don't want you to faint in some maintenance tunnel where nobody will find you for the next hour."

OOC:
Yes, I fixed the rank mistake. I guess Cass is getting punchy.
In the transporter room, Cass addresses the people she's assembled to travel to the Four to observe Zephyr's procedure: Alex, Marbo, Kendall, and Yang. "I've told you all this privately, but let me say it again for emphasis: the purpose of this trip is peaceful. We are there to observe the procedure to separate the symbiote from Lt. Comm. Borealis and bring him home. This event represents a major milestone on the road to establishing a diplomatic relationship. I know that some of you think that's a foolish endeavor, but the fact is that our ship is ailing and we can't be sure of surviving a firefight with them at the moment, so if you can't buy into the peace process philosophically, do so out of pragmatism.

"We are all wearing sidearms by agreement with the captain of the Four. They are to remain holstered for the entire time we are aboard their ship, except in the event of an act of aggression against us. I am hopeful that we can get through this without such an act, but keep in mind that the act of removing a symbiote from a viable host is unlikely to be a popular move among the crew of the Four. If something does happen, please be judicious in your response. I don't want a firefight as a result of a dirty look or aggressive posturing. I trust you all to know a serious breach of safety when you see one."

She looks each one of them in the eyes, nods, and takes her place on the pad. "Energize."

Yang's arm is fully healed by now. He's wearing a phaser holster at his side and he's listening to your speech with a serious expression. At one point when he has an opportunity, probably before your speech, he comes up to you, Cass, and says: "Thank you for requesting me for this mission, Commander, I won't disappoint you!"
He seems genuinely happy to be chosen but you also don't get the impression that he's underestimating the risk that comes with it

Lorq is reviewing all medical files on the symbiote and hosts. Any information, even something trivial or overlooked, could prove important.

There has to be something that will help the hosts break free. Lorq mutters while working.

Mach, if you tell me more precisely what kind of thing you're looking for and give me a roll, you might find something
Apr 2, 2019 3:44 pm
I am looking to if there is any way we can suppress the parasite enough to bring forth the mind of the host. On the same track...a way to kill the parasite and save the host.

Lorq, you look through all documentation that you have access to and you can tell that these parasites definitely react differently to certain stimuli than the hosts. You are pretty sure it should be possible to find a way to knock out the parasite without hurting the host. If the host's brain has not been fully disconnected from the body, that should allow you to communicate with the host, not the parasite. If you pool your findings with the ones Kendall got from her research, you might be able to create a prototype but without access to a living parasite, you can't really finetune the device.

Alex arrives in the transporter room having cleaned up, looking and feeling a bit more human. She stands, hands clasped behind her back, listening intently to Cass's speech.

"Commander, if I may?" Alex asks, but then doesn't wait for confirmation. "As with any first contact scenario, it's absolutely critical that we all remember that what may seem disturbing, disconcerting, or hostile may not be so. While we have seen first-hand the physical prowess of this race, we have to try our hardest to avoid physical confrontation. It is not likely to be a fight we can win, and even if we could, the consequences could well be disastrous."

With that, she awaits transport.

Away team

Once everyone is ready and Cass gives the order, you are transported to the coordinates on the Four that the captain has given you. You materialize in what looks like a conference room. There's a large table with a number of chairs around it.
Standing by the table is the captain. He is wearing a dress uniform in the blue of a medical officer but it looks slightly bulky as if he's wearing something else underneath.
There are two guards in the same outfit, although both of them in gold. They're carrying phasers in holsters but don't look immediately aggressive.
The captain walks up to Cass and reaches out his hand to shake yours. "Welcome to my ship, Commander Cassano." He then turns towards the rest of the away team and greets them quickly. He gives his own name again, a series of unintelligible clicks. Then he turns back to Cass. "Please, come with me. Our medical center is just down the hallway. My doctors are getting ready for the operation as we speak."
Apr 2, 2019 4:42 pm
Cass shakes his hand and nods to assent to following the captain to the medical center. "I apologize for our translator not being able to process your proper nouns. If you think I could reproduce it, I would like it if you could teach me how to say your name, captain. If we are to forge a diplomatic relationship, the first step is probably being able to address each other by name."

As they walk, Cass tries to take in as many details of the ship as possible.

The corridors are dark. They're made of material similar to the outside so they shimmer dark green in the very low lighting. Occasionally doors break off from the hallway on either side but they are spaced farther apart than they would be on a Consortium ship. You can see in the hallway, but due to the low light, only barely.
"Unless your species is able to produce clicking sounds of different frequencies simultaneously, I don't think you will be able to correctly pronounce my full name. I can teach you an approximation that should be possible to recreate for your vocal system, if you want."
Apr 2, 2019 5:05 pm
Cass is starting to feel on edge. Something about the too-low lighting and the alien materials of the ship is creating an outsized sense of immediate threat. She pushes it down and maintains an even, conversational tone, even managing a smile. "I'd appreciate being able to even approximate the pronunciation, thank you."

OOC:
Im assuming marbo has been following along, in awe and typing furiously on his datapad.
"commander. Zlam. This is fascinating!"

Is kendall with the away team? If not I will try and find them on the ship

OOC:
Yes, Kendall's on the away team.
Apr 2, 2019 5:49 pm
Alex walks along with the rest of the away team, remaining silent but vigilant. Most of her attention is focused on the captain, studying the cadences of his speech, the body language he uses when he says certain words or phrases, anything she can glean to be able to assign intent or thought patterns to speech.

Alex, you get the impression that he is definitely tense but he doesn't seem dishonest. He is hard to read, though, because his mannerism is not quite human.

After a short walk, you reach another door and the captain stops in front of it. It slides open soundlessly and, following the captain, you enter the room behind it. It is large and rectangular, much more spacious than the Potential's sickbay but also noticeably less sophisticated. There are medical tools to perform surgery and some scanners but a lot of medical technology that is present on the Potential is missing here.
A man and a woman in civilian clothing are quickly moving around the room, working on some terminals and gathering tools on a table near the center of the room. Next to the table is a raised operating table out of the same green metal as most of the ship.

Almost at the same time as you, two more people arrive. One of them is Zephyr - or at least his body. The other is a tall, muscular man with white hair and pale skin wearing a regular red spacefleet uniform.

The captain turns to "Zephyr" and says: "Child, I am sorry that we have to do this to you. I swear by my life that you will be joined with a proper host again as soon as we can arrange. For now, this is the only way to ensure our survival."

You all notice that the pale man next to "Zephyr" frowns at these words. He does not seem to agree with the captain but does not say anything.
Apr 2, 2019 7:14 pm
Seeing Zephyr - or his body, at least - is more of a gut-punch than Cass expected, driving home the fate she'd consigned him to when she decided to send an away team into that first ambush. She'd actually ordered them to submit to capture, in fact, a fact she's conveniently forgotten until now. Yeah, that has worked out great.

But she tries to maintain a composed, neutral expression on her face, her hands clasped loosely behind her, feet comfortably apart in a relaxed stance. As the captain addresses "Zephyr", she watches closely the responses from the other two beings.
Apr 2, 2019 7:42 pm
The pale man next to Zephyr gains Alex’s initial attention, a curious look from behind narrowed eyes. The increase in tension in the room is palpable to her, at least. She studies the Zephyr-body for any indication of the human host mind inside. She says nothing at this time, merely watches.
