lavtodd says:
Moira relays her information.

Marbo, yeh got any more slug juice? Or maybe, do yeh think there’d be any biological residue in tha.....

She’s about to say "poor lad who had ‘is hands ripped off an’ tried ta murder Cass," but she sees Zephyr and thinks better of it.

Tha "specimen box?"

*cough cough* casket! *cough cough*
"Well, even if we don't have anything left of the slug you're trying not to mention," she says, smiling lopsidedly at her engineer, "I have a feeling the Four might have some samples, or could get them pretty easily. If they're testing humanoids for genetic compatibility with specific slugs, they have to be testing against something. I'll contact their captain and see."
bowlofspinach says:
Zephyr, whichever kind of encoding system the slugs are using, you are unfamiliar with it. The task gets even harder since you do not have much experience with their language and especially not with past codes they have used before, which would be a valuable resource in understanding this one.

You are able to grasp some basic information from the communications. They seem to be reporting about the attempts at diplomacy with the Potential and about the prisoner exchange that has been proposed. The Four is telling whoever they were messaging to hold off with "merging the prisoner" and not to further disassemble the robot while these negotiations are ongoing. There is also repeated mention of what you assume is the name of one parasite. You are unable to determine any further information than this from the intercepted messages.
Cass listens to Zephyr's slightly disappointing but not entirely fruitless report. "At least it sounds like they haven't turned Lt. Felt into a host yet. M1-K3 might be in a bit of trouble, especially if they return him partially disassembled, but it's not like we don't have his specs and maps and whatnot on file." She pretends not to notice the look that passes between Moira and Zephyr as her lack of technical competence is made obvious once again.

She's about to take her leave to go back to the bridge to hail the Four and talk terms of prisoner exchange with the captain when the full impact of what she's proposing really hits her. She's going to try to bring these bastards back to life. Spacefleet is ordering her to bring them back. To reconstitute the slug who'd tried to eat his way into her body, and who had actually succeeded in doing that to Marbo.

This is too much for Spacefleet to ask of her, too much to expect her to ask of her crew - especially of Marbo and Zephyr.

Realizing that she's standing motionless and staring into the middle distance while the the rest of them watch her with wary expressions, Cass puts the mask of command firmly back in place, says "Carry on," and leaves the temporary medbay.

OOC:
Sorry for back-to-back posting, but it occurs to me that there might not be a way forward if I don't get this particular ball rolling.
On her way to the bridge, Cass comms Alex and requests her presence on the bridge. When she steps off the turbolift, she tells Darcy, "When Lt. Comm. Lloyd arrives on the bridge, hail the captain of the Four. I need to have a talk with him."
Apr 13, 2019 8:49 pm
Alex arrives at the bridge promptly. It can’t have been more than a few moments between receiving the message and making her way here.

"Commander," she says and stands ready nearby to await instructions.
Apr 13, 2019 8:59 pm
As instructed, Darcy turns towards her console immediately when Alex arrives on the bridge. She starts typing for a few seconds, then lifts her head and looks at Alex. She doesn't say anything but something in her expression gives Alex the feeling that Darcy has done some research on her and knows about her diplomatic history.
After another few seconds, Darcy's terminal gives off a short signal and she says: "Channel open. I'm putting the captain on screen."

Immediately after, the viewscreen changes to show the familiar sight of the captain sitting at the same table as during your last communications. He is letting you speak first.
Apr 13, 2019 11:18 pm
Cass nods at Alex. "I'm about to give him a good news, bad news scenario. Feel free to step in if I'm mucking it up."

She turns to the screen when the captain appears. With a nod and a small smile, she says, "Captain, good to see you. Thank you for letting down the shields earlier. I take it you've had no further issues with dissenting crew members."
Apr 13, 2019 11:26 pm
"It is good to see you too, commander. The situation is back under control, thank you." The captain's expression is very neutral and hard to read. "You have been communicating with your superiors. Are there any news?"
Apr 13, 2019 11:55 pm
"Yes," she says, keeping her own poker face. "I've been authorized to continue negotiating with your people for the release of Consortium prisoners in exchange for your people who have been caught in our biofilters. My superiors, however, believe that for the number of your people you're asking us to return, we should be receiving more Consortium people. Perhaps you could tell me how many hosts you have who are within the window of non-permanence currently?"
Apr 14, 2019 12:11 am
He does not reply right away, instead taking some time to think about his answer.
"Commander, there seems to be a slight misunderstanding here. We are willing to consider alternatives to our current method of living within host bodies. We are even willing to decrease new merges to the absolute minimum necessary during our negotiations. We are, however, not willing to remove more of our people from host bodies that they are already inhabiting. We agreed to this once in the case of your crewmate, as a sign of our good faith. It is not going to happen again."
He reaches for a datapad that had been lying just outside of the frame of this video conversation and looks at it for a moment. "I do not have the exact number of unbonded hosts, unfortunately, but according to previous numbers, we should be able to gather enough humanoid prisoners for a one to one exchange. Thirteen of your people against the thirteen of ours that you have killed with your transporters."
Apr 14, 2019 1:24 am
Cass maintains an icy little smile. "Captain, let's please be accurate in our semantics. If your people can be returned to you alive, we haven't killed them. Whereas the Consortium captives you have forced into being hosts can certainly be said to have been killed. Not that I'm turning down the offer. I just want us to be comparing apples to apples."

She adjusts herself in the captain's chair minutely, just enough to push her left shoulder slightly toward Alex, hoping to signal that she's open to any input the diplomat may want to offer, either on the communication or privately.

Alex makes a small gesture to the commander, requesting a private word. When Cass makes her excuse to the captain of the Four and mutes communications, Alex approaches and says, "My inclination would be to correct the semantics in your reply. Give the correct phrasing -- emphasize it even, if it's an important distinction -- but pointing out differences in semantics makes them the point of negotiation, rather than what you actually want to discuss. You're absolutely right that we haven't killed any of their people if we can return them alive, but..."

She tilts her head with a sudden thought. "This might be completely impossible, but... would there be a way to restore our people that have become hosts in a similar fashion to how we're restoring the parasites?"
Apr 14, 2019 5:29 am
Cass stares at Alex for a moment. "You mean... why don't we restore the people who've been taken as hosts from transporter patterns and essentially create clones of them?" When Alex hesitates, Cass clears her throat and says, "I mean, of course you're aware of the ethical regulations that govern the use of transporter patterns and... You know what? Never mind. You're right about the semantics thing. Good note. Thanks. I'll move on."

She gives Alex one last glance, looking a little concerned, and gestures to Darcy to restore the connection. "Captain, we accept the terms you've proposed. Let's move on to discuss the technical details. My chief engineer has been working from the calculations yours sent us, and her results indicate that the restoration of your people is indeed possible, but very tricky. She believes that only one attempt will be possible, and that it might not result in complete success."

The captain ignores the debate about semantics. When Cass states the difficulty of restoring the slugs, he takes a deep breath. "Failure is not an option. If there is any way we can help the process, let us know."
Apr 14, 2019 7:32 am
"There is one thing that would increase the chance of success - DNA of the people we're trying to restore. Would you be able to provide that?"
Apr 14, 2019 7:49 am
The captain takes another look at his datapad before responding. "We don't have actual DNA samples from most of them but we have digital data of all our scans and analyses. If those can help your chances, I can have them sent over to your ship. Is there anything else you need?" His tone indicates that he going to stop speaking and allow you to reply but then another thought crosses his mind and he speaks up again: "And how and where do you want to make the exchange? My offer to take you to our home base still stands."
Apr 14, 2019 9:59 am
Cass isn't ready to commit to any plan for the exchange yet. She's acutely aware that Adm. Hao failed to give instructions regarding the invitation to the parasites' home base. Taking her scout ship alone deep into enemy territory with a comatose captain and so many injured is high on the list of things Cass doesn't want to do.

"First things first, captain. Please do send the bioscan data of your missing people. And if your engineer has any other suggestions or data that might be helpful, we'd welcome the input. Cassano out."

When the connection is broken, she tells Darcy, " Naturally, anything they send should be quarantined and thoroughly scanned for viruses and other contaminations before we do anything with it. "

Darcy confirms. Then she asks: "Commander, about Lt. Comm. Lloyd and Dr. Lorq. We have been involving them in discussions that should be classified even though they are not members of our crew. If you - and they - want, I can request to have them temporarily be assigned to our ship. Otherwise, I have to request that they be kept out of confidential meetings from now on. I have compiled dossiers on both of them so give you an overview of their spacefleet history." She glances at Alex. "I strongly encourage you to read them before making your choice."
Apr 14, 2019 3:33 pm
Alex tilts her head, looking back at Darcy with one eyebrow raised. "By all means," replies Alex. "All crew members’ Spacefleet histories should be available to the commanding officer. I am happy to comply. In fact, I’ll send the Commander my entire service record myself. I have nothing to hide."

Was that a slight emphasis on that last ‘I’? Could be.
Apr 14, 2019 3:44 pm
Darcy keeps her eyes on Alex for a few more seconds. When her terminal makes a short noise, she shrugs and looks down at it. "Commander, we have received the data from the Four. It's a bit more than I expected but the computer does not detect any malware. I will send them on to Lt. Comm. Bruce."
OOC:
When Cass looks at Darcy's dossiers, she won't find anything unexpected. What Darcy apparently wanted her to know about is the matter with Anavir Gamma that Alex already told her about

Moira gets a "ping" on her datapad, and goes to the nearest terminal to review the data. She wants Marbo's two cents on this.

Oi, Doctor, what do yeh think?

Moira, as you look over the data, you quickly notice that it is much more detailed than any test the Consortium would do. A lot of it focuses on neural network and brainwave patterns but all the information you need is in there. This should definitely help with making the slug restoration far more reliable.
OOC:
Marbo can still give me a roll for this when he's active to see if he spots anything interesting about the data
