OOC:
I suppose he could be, i hadnt made a post i na while and intended to post about his plans to come up with a slug solution but forgot to actually post it over the weekend. Ill strikeout the last post and edit it.

Marbo, you were not successful in finding anything you could use to stun or disable the slugs that would not also harm the host. You have the information from your LF, however.
You can also try to have someone else (Lorq, possibly) look over the data with you and help you so you can get a help die and possibly still partially succeed.

"Okay, I think the continual transporter idea is interesting, but probably not practical. I agree with Alex that if we were to implement it, we'd need to make it clear up front that we were doing it.

"The vaccination is where we should be concentrating more effort, I think. That would give the parasites an urgent reason to negotiate in good faith. If we could vaccinate humanoids against becoming hosts, that dries up the slavery market and decreases their race's likelihood of survival."
Apr 15, 2019 4:15 pm
"It might make them more likely to negotiate in good faith", Darcy interjects. "It might also make them more likely to just shoot us down if they think that can stop this vaccine. If we tell them about it, it has to be after the vaccine is developed and we have sent the formula to spacefleet."
Apr 15, 2019 4:18 pm
Cass looks at Darcy in amusement. "Yes, that's the plan. I certainly wasn't planning to call up the captain of the Four and brag about this cool idea we've been tossing around. I'm just trying to establish the research priorities. This vaccine should be the top of the list."
Apr 15, 2019 4:19 pm
Alex turns to Darcy and gives her a wintry sort of smile. "Now you understand where I'm headed with all of this. Develop it. Develop it all. And then dole out this knowledge bit by bit, acting gracious and open, providing it in the interest of sharing. The tiny voice at the back of my head that tells me to be optimistic wants to believe that we can find a common solution beneficial to both parties. The louder voice in my head says fine, but don't expect it to happen."

She smiles wryly. "And before anybody asks, the voices in my head are a metaphor, thank you."

Moira nods in agreement.

As fer tha retrieval, do yeh happen ta have any access ta any files that may help? Ah'm reachin' tha end of mah resources.

Lavtodd, we received a ton of data from the Four and sent it all to Moira. She should have plenty of bioscan and other data to make the reconstitution of the slugs successful.

Lorq looks concerned and speaks again.
I had a disturbing thought. These parasites have been taking over beings for a long time, and gaining their knowledge. I think it is very likely they have taken transporter engineers. Could they be trying to engineer a way to bypass the biofilters? Maybe we should have our people trying to find a way around it, and if they do...fix that work around.

Lorq is aware that he has spoken more at this meeting than he has in days, but the respect they have shown him has emboldened him.

I have one more thing to add. I would like to propose a hypothetical situation. I am going to use Humans, but it would be the same for any of us.

Let's say that you had a child and were told that she would live a short life with no real sensory input. Then a doctor tells you that if you killed an adult, he could put your child's mind in that body and she would lead a full life.
Some would agree, but most probably would not. Now if the same doctor said you could us an orangutan and you child would have speech and human intellect. Many more would say yes. Now all babies are being born that way. There would be protests, but many would do it and in a generation it would be the norm.
The intial people would say...it's a monkey, we are superior they are animals.

My point is, to do what the parasites do, you almost have to think yourself superior and the hosts as animals. That attitude could come up in negotiations

He realizes everyone is staring.

Feel free to check with a sociologist or xenobiologist. I may be completely wrong.

Ah, I am a fool. Thanks, Moon.
Moira is impressed by the doctor's insights.

So, yer sayin, they may not think they're negotiatin' with us at all. They may think they're givin' tha dog an extra helpin'.

"I'd really like us to come up with one or two proposals for how to exchange the restored parasites. If we can offer something that doesn't involve us going to the home base of the parasites, that's going to be my preference. Any ideas?

"And I still haven't heard any suggestions for how we restore and care for these parasites in a way that doesn't risk any of our people. I'd like to hear some proposals on that."
Apr 15, 2019 8:50 pm
There’re some options fer restorin’ tha slugs. Mostly based on neural networks. Ah’m not sure what tha success rate would be though. What if.....

She pauses, choosing her words carefully.

What if we docked ta each other? Then their ship becomes part of our footprint, an’ we can un-transport tha slugs ta them. Put a thick biofilter between tha ports. Talk ta them in person, without needin’ tha distrust-y mechanics.
Apr 15, 2019 8:53 pm
"That might work. They will need to have our people on their ship ready to transport over, I guess, but that method might be feasible. And it eliminates the risk of the slugs trying to jump into one of our people before we can exchange them."

OOC:
If anyone has anything else they want to discuss or any additional comments, please go ahead. In a couple of hours, I'll skip on to hailing the captain of the Four.
Apr 16, 2019 2:30 am
"Okay, let's summarize. We're going to prioritizing the development of a vaccine to make humanoids toxic hosts to the parasites. We have a potential project in terms of developing a device that would automatically transport someone in place at regular intervals. We already developed an ingestible locator beacon that would make the user easily located for transporting.

"We've agreed that we develop these things and then, once they've been documented to Spacefleet, we inform the parasites that we have them. This way, we maintain an appearance of good faith while providing an incentive to them to either negotiate in good faith or leave us alone.

"We've discussed the possibility that the parasites know quite a lot about our transporter technology from having taken Spacefleet engineers as hosts, and proposed making some upgrades and changes to the technology to diminish the effectiveness of the knowledge they already have. I'd like this to be as much of a priority as the vaccine development.

"And we've had a good proposal of a method of exchanging our prisoners for theirs without exposing our crew to possible attack by the restored slugs before we hand them over - and without venturing into the home territory of the parasites. Moira suggests we dock against the Four. We place the reconstitution tech in the space that bridges the ships, raise a biofilter between us to ensure security, and then reconstitute them on their side. That way, our personnel are never exposed to the slugs."
OOC:
If I'm not explaining this correctly, someone correct me.
Cass looks around the room. "If there are no further comments, let's adjourn so that everyone can begin working on these projects. Moira, doctors - feel free to consult Lt. Comm. Borealis on any of these projects. He's cleared to do light duty and would obviously be a big help. Dismissed." As the meeting breaks up, Cass says, "Darcy, open a comm channel to the captain of the Four. I want to hear all the news that wasn't fit to print."

Everyone returns to their work places to set up what has been planned. Moira, you can give me a Lasers roll to see how much you're able to change up the systems that the slugs might want to manipulate without impeding their functionality. Lorq, you can go with Marbo and look over his notes and roll one Lasers for Help. If you succeed with it, you might be able to develop some sort of vaccine after all.

Cass (and Alex, I assume), you're back on the bridge. Darcy is opening a channel to the Four and after a few seconds, informs you that the connection has been made. The viewscreen in front of you lights up and shows the captain of the Four in his usual position. "Ah, it's good to talk to you again, commander. There is something we need to discuss. I did not think it would have been a good idea to just send it over in writing. First of all, my apologies for not asking for your permission to bring in these supplies but that decision was made by the queen herself. As for the supply list. We are bringing in some new crewmembers to replace those lost in the mutiny. There's also going to be some technical equipment and children's bodies for our crewmembers once you restore them. Since we don't know when and where we are going to do the exchange, it seemed reasonable to be prepared." He pauses for a moment. You can tell by his behavior that he already knows that you will not like the next thing he has to say. "We're also bringing in one humanoid host body. We will keep all of the restored people in children's bodies for the time being but for one of them, the queen does not allow this. I know you will disapprove but my hands are tied here. If there is any reasonable concession I can make to work out this issue, please let me know."

He's right, Cass doesn't like the idea of them bringing in a humanoid host for one of the parasites that will be restored, but it's gratifying that her opinion seems to matter to him at least a little. It suggests that she does have at least some leverage. "Who have you chosen as the host? Anyone I would know?"
