Chapter III: Reunited

Darcy smiles very lightly at Moira's outrage, even though under other circumstances, she would probably be annoyed at it. "He's an asshole but he knows how to suck up to his superiors. That kind of officer usually doesn't make it into the captain's chair but I guess he's better at it than most. We'll just have to deal with having him around. At least Cassano is still in command of this mission."

Zephyr is laying in his bed, unable to rest any longer. This is getting silly, he thinks to himself, I am perfectly capable of functioning normally again. There is a concern of psychological impacts, sure, but lying here in isolation is just going to make things worse.

He stands up and presses his comm badge, "Commander Cassano, Borealis here. I'd like to return to light duty if at all possible. I have been cleared to return to the bridge, but with your permission I would like to spend some time doing an analysis of the symbiotes' biological needs. Perhaps I can come up with a way to help them survive without needing host bodies."

He paces the floor as he says this, "Assuming you approve, is there any way I can get more information on their biological needs and what avenues have already been pursued?"
Apr 19, 2019 5:18 pm
Cass listens to Zephyr's request with mixed feelings. On the one hand, it's encouraging that he feels ready to return to work, and his choice of project is certainly something in which they could really use a breakthrough. On the other, she's not convinced that he's really ready to tackle something like that, psychologically.

The Potential really needs a counselor.

"All right, I'll approve your return to light duty, and your choice of project. I'll have Doctors Lorq and Zlam share all research data and notes regarding the physiology of the sl... symbiotes, along with anything else they have on them. But I want you to check in with me regularly, okay? I want to hear about your progress, even if there's nothing really to report."
Apr 19, 2019 5:20 pm
Alex comes out of the ready room more amused than anything. "People like that are just set up for a fall. They're standing on a precipice, and all it takes is a good strong breeze to... let's say... give them a nudge."

She smiles crookedly at Moira. "We're clever women. I'm sure that if we put our heads together, we can at least keep him from derailing our efforts. At best, we can probably come up with a good strong breeze, yes?"
Apr 19, 2019 5:30 pm
Cass grins. "At the very least, we can do that much. He gave in rather easily, don't you think? I guess that means he expected me to cave, but knew he doesn't have authorization to pull rank on me. We should be careful, though. I don't put it past him to undermine our efforts. I don't think he really appreciates the gravity of this situation, or the imminent dangers."
Apr 19, 2019 5:37 pm
Alex snorts indelicately. "He doesn't appreciate the gravity of any situation. Those peace talks he referenced, that I commented on? I have it on authority I trust that he actually changed the menu for the state dinner to include karavis paste, when anyone with two spare brain cells to rub together knows either that the Sheraks are highly allergic, or that at the very least you should check dietary restrictions. He's an idiot of the first degree, who takes credit for his people's work at every possible opportunity."

Cass stops grinning. If this moron had interfered with a menu for a state dinner to disastrous effect, there's no telling what he might do to screw up the delicate negotiations with the parasites. She lowers her voice so that only Moira and Alex can hear her. "All of which raises the question - why did Admiral Hao send him? It's starting to look almost as though she doesn't actually want the diplomatic effort to succeed."
Apr 19, 2019 5:48 pm
"I don't know if it's as straightforward as that," says Alex. "Adakys Kot, the diplomat Thompson referenced? I've heard good things, but have no personal knowledge to offer. Someone clearly sent this bumbling idiot, but I'm hesitant to say it's Hao."
Apr 19, 2019 5:50 pm
Cass calls Darcy over. "Can you send the three of us everything you can find on Thompson? I think we need to know more about our new 'adviser' and his possible sponsors."

"I think you're reading too much into it, Commander. As Lloyd said, he's great at taking the credit for other people's accomplishments. There are rumors floating around about him and the people who served under him know what he's like but he sucks up to his superiors any chance he gets. I would assume that Hao just thinks he's much better suited for this job than he is. That said, I can definitely get a dossier on him put together, commander."
OOC:
78, if you want, give me a roll to see what Alex knows about Kot
Apr 19, 2019 7:37 pm
Lorq approached Lt. Commander Borealis with his data pad.
The captain told me you wanted to take a crack at the parasites biology and wanted to see what we had done so far. This is a summary, but all the research is available.
I think fresh eyes are always a good idea when you get stuck. Please let me know any way that I can help. I would be happy to work with you.

Cass sighs. "You're probably right. Well, if there's anything in his background I don't already know that you think we'd find useful, forward it to me."

"Of course, commander. If I may add something, while Thompson is terrible to work with, his crew probably isn't. We should be able to ask for their help if needed."", Darcy replies. "Now that the Dove has arrived, should we contact the Four again?"
OOC:
Zephyr, if you want to research something, give me a Lasers roll. Lorq can help. You already tried the robot thing but didn't get many results since the slug was killed immediately after putting it in. It'll be difficult to come up with something new but you can try

OOC:
Alex, you've heard of Kot but you've never met him. He is a Grall diplomat, joined with a symbiote, who is not a member of spacefleet but works with them from time to time. He has a good track record and reputation but you don't remember any specifics at the moment

OOC:
I'm betting that Marbo would also help, as he's done some pretty extensive research on the slugs, too.

OOC:
He can only get one extra die for help but both of them can attempt to help in case one of them fails. And for rp purposes, of course all three of them can get together to think about this

"Thank you Lorq. I'll read them over and discuss any ideas I may have with you. I'm sure between the two of us we can come up with something."
OOC:
Can I get a summary of what we know from anyone? I wasn't part of that discussion before, but I skimmed it way back when. Here's what I think I know:
* They're shell-less mollusc like creatures, similar to a slug
* They feed off of Melanin, which is why their hosts grow pale
* They separate the hosts spinal cord and interrupt all sensory, motor, and reflex signals
* They are obviously sentient, and probably act as individuals rather than some sort of collective
* They are not interested in living within some sort of simulated/cultured meatbags
* It seems like there was some discussion of android/cybernetic hosts?

Edit: adding Lasers roll.

"First, send over Lt. Commander Bruce's plans for the shuttle-based prisoner exchange to the Dove, as well as to the Four. Then hail the Four so we can discuss this new arrangement. I'm sure their captain will wonder why we've abandoned the plan to dock our two ships together."
Apr 20, 2019 6:13 am
Darcy sends the information over to both ships as requested and, after enough time for them to go through the information, opens a channel to the Four. The captain appears on the view screen and greets you.
