Science team: You look over the data again but even Zephyr's fresh pair of eyes can't come up with anything beyond the robot suit idea. You have one or two ideas for small improvements but nothing major comes to your mind.

Zephyr, we know that artificial hosts did not work out well. Do you think that if we installed an artificial melanin system that would feed the symbiote, would it make a difference?

You come up with a way to include a tiny limited replicator into Moira's design that can feed artificial melanin to the slug inside the robot. It should be definitely more efficient and suited for long-term use than Moira's initial idea was

Happy that something has gone a little right, Lorq sends a message to the captain.

Captain, I know you are busy, but if you get a chance to take a look at these notes and schematic, I have made a slight improvement to the artificial host design that may make it more palatable to the...ummm...do we have a name for them? Anyway, let me know if you have any questions.

Cass hesitates. "I keep wishing we did. Apparently, none of their proper nouns can be translated. Also, it's Commander, Dr. Lorq. And I could look at your notes and schematics, but it will probably be more efficient if you just tell me about your idea. What do you have in mind?"

Sorry, commander. Well boiled down to the salient point...we offered the symbiote an artificial host and that didn't go well. I looked at the host and realized that since the symbiote fed on melanin, and our host had none, it might be starving the symbiote. So I installed a mini replicator that will produce melanin as needed. Since living hosts eventually run out this might actually be preferable. I hope that helps

"Brilliant idea Lorq! Lets just hope it takes. I have come up with a binomial nomenclature Id like to propose for the slugs. Veronicella Tellinii, or Verons for short. Veronicella is a genus of terrestrial slugs found on earth, and Tellinii is a species of parasites that take over its hosts central nervous system. It seemed fitting to me, what do you think?"
Apr 20, 2019 6:18 pm
Sounds great. I don't know if we should tell them where we got the name of course. Do you have a short form in mind?

Hearing Zephyr's voice, Cass is surprised. Seems he's hit the ground running on his return to light duty. "I like it, Zeph. From now on, let's refer to them as Verons.

"And I agree that your idea is brilliant, Dr. Lorq. Start working on a prototype right away. And keep me posted on your progress. Cassano out."

bowlofspinach says:
Darcy sends the information over to both ships as requested and, after enough time for them to go through the information, opens a channel to the Four. The captain appears on the view screen and greets you.
"Hello, Captain. I assume you've seen our revised plan for the prisoner exchange?"
Apr 20, 2019 6:27 pm
"I have. I assume there were some unexpected difficulties with the docking. Or does it have to do with your newly arrived allies? I hope your new orders do not conflict with the exchange."
Apr 20, 2019 6:32 pm
"It's the former. We are unable to guarantee that docking the ships together won't do significant damage to one or both vessels, so we pivoted to a method of exchange that exposes us both to very limited risk. As for the new arrivals, I've been assured that I'm still leading our negotiation.

"Speaking of which, have your new arrivals brought changes to your orders?"

"No changes. Until the exchange, I will still be in charge of these negotiations. After that, while I hope to remain deeply involved in our peace talks, I cannot guarantee it. The ship carrying our prisoners for the exchange as well as the host for our restored sister has left home base and should be here within a few hours. We will be ready to perform the exchange as soon as they arrive. If you wish to request further backup from your admirals, we will wait of course but the humanoids will be transported in an unarmed freighter so there is no reason to be alarmed. And one more question: We have received a communications request from your allied ship but have denied it until now because we decided to speak to you first. Should we open communications with your ally ship after we conclude our conversation?"
Apr 20, 2019 7:04 pm
Cass seethes inwardly but remains placid on the outside. "No. I'll hail them after our conversation is over and find out what they want." She briefly imagines giving the order to fire photon torpedoes at the Dove while looking Thompson in the eye on the viewscreen.

"Captain, in an earlier conversation between us, you mentioned that your people have tried using mechanical host bodies but that they weren't adequate to your needs. Our scientists have come up with a design for an artificial host body with a mechanism that produces melanin as needed. Hypothetically, would such an artificial body potentially meet the needs of your species?"

"Now that would end up an unmitigated disaster," Alex mutters under her breath when the idea of the Verons speaking directly to the Dove comes up, barely even audible to someone standing next to her.

The captain hesitates before speaking. He seems to carefully consider his answer. "Hypothetically, yes. It is possible to create mechanical bodies that can keep us alive, with your design maybe even indefinitely. However, in practice it's not as easy as that. Our people have evolved to live within living host bodies. Asking us to live outside a host body is like asking you to live without your skin. A mechanical body that feeds us will not change that."
Apr 20, 2019 9:09 pm
Cass considers her own words carefully. "That's true, it won't. But if my understanding is correct, your species evolved that way because host bodies on your home planet were plentiful. At some point, that changed, and you started to want more sophisticated host bodies, which meant attacking other sentient species. Again, if my information is correct, your numbers have been greatly reduced over time. That would seem to suggest that natural selection is not in favor of this method, wouldn't it?

"I understand that accepting artificial bodies is a huge leap, but I disagree that it's like asking me to live without my skin. It's more like asking a civilization who has built its economy on enslaving other races to shift to a different way of providing for itself, without the use of slaves. All I'm asking is that you consider the prospect. It could very well prove to be the salvation of your species."
Apr 20, 2019 9:52 pm
"We could take about the ethics of our way of life for days without coming to an agreement. What I was trying to convey with my comparison were not ethics but the facts of our biology. You offered us the possibility of joining with willing hosts, sharing a body between two minds. Despite this going against everything my people stand for, we were willing to consider it. And now, that we have declared ourselves willing to compromise, you ask for more. Suddenly, a willing joining is not enough anymore, suddenly my people have to live in agony and torture. And if we don't agree, we will be destroyed by the superior firepower of your Consortium? Is that what you speak of when you say 'the salvation of my species'?"
When the captain replies, he starts out out in his regular, calm voice but towards the end, he gets definitely upset. He does not yell or get up from his seat but his voice carries noticeable anger
