Episode One: A Patrol Gone Wary

Its a cool night, clear skies, and the city is beginning to show its night life. Jump City seems to be experiencing a quiet night, for now.

Going ons in the city.

Surfside: Has heard some rumors about sponsoring a spray painting class at the Expression Building of the Library.

Nightvale: A deal for some of the cheapest liquor you've ever tasted is going on tonight, and its sure to be a rowdy night.

Art District: A series on eastern inspired modern clothing is supposed to be going on show tonight, tickets are expensive for sure, but has attracted plenty of attention.

JCU: A rally for the Young Conservatives requesting that Jump City starts marking people under Metahuman, Atlantean, and such instead of having the option to opt out.

Mike is going to be investigating the rally at JCU. That sounds like some nonsense that needs to get shut down

Darkhound rider her Dark Miasma in search of Young Lads to...interrogate. One of them has to know who the cop was that framed her brother. If she and the hounds can just find the right one, she could get her brother out of jail.

Jeffrey makes his way to JCU since he wants to understand better what they are discussing. Generally somewhat conservative by nature, he is not sure if he can support an attempt to discriminate against what they are calling metahumans. He needs to learn more. When he arrives he will use his presence and his notoriety to get back stage.

Nightvale:

It's been a bad day. A really, really bad day, and Johanna's determined that either her evening will be better or she simply won't remember it in the morning. With a cheap bottle of chocolate flavored creme liquor wrapped in its brown paper bag, she sits outside of the liquor store that she'd bought it at. She imbibes liberally every two minutes or so while thumbing through a text conversation she'd had earlier in the day on her phone. The thing that had driven her to the store.

The blue, bright light from her phone reflects off the aviator shades that conceal half of her face. Her lips are pulled in a tight grimace and the aviator jacket is buttoned up around her limber body, (glug, gulp, swallow) but she won't be cold for long.

Mike moves through the rally, looking around at all the people who came to discriminate against powered people. People who are simply different from them. People who scare them. That's what it boils down to. And Mike knows about scary. His haunted eyes take in his surroundings as the eldritch voices whisper through his head. He sees a young woman holding up a sign demanding Atlanteans make themselves known. TEAR HER TONGUE OUT! A young man laughs and he embraces a woman with one arm and jumps up and down in time with their chant, spilling the beer in his other hand. FEED HER HIS EYES! The voices never end.

He makes his way to the front of the rally, looking for the leaders. He needs to be close enough to hear what they say. To yell out to them that they're wrong. TO KILL THEM! He grits his teeth and shakes his head angrily. No, not to kill them.

Resonance flies over the rooftops of Hillside in what is becoming her standard patrol pattern. From the roof of her tiny apartment building along the shore, through the bayside end of Downtown and into Nightvale. That rally at JCU could be trouble, but so could the cheap drinks in Nightvale. She circles southward and glides high over JCU. Although she's trying to be alert for trouble, she can't help but think about her father again.

Last night when she was at her parents house for dinner, she had tried to bring up metahumans to him, thinking she was being circuitous in leading him there, hoping to plant a positive seed in at least one conversation. But as soon as the discussion got remotely close to metas, his beliefs roared right back to the forefront, and he regurgitated the same tired old lines again.

"Metahumans are dangerous. Metahuman heroes are the cause of metahuman villains. They're challenging the natural order. They blah blah blah." How was she ever going to be herself around her parents when she couldn't even broach the subject of metahumans without her father going ballistic? She unconsciously found herself soaring closer to JCU and the rally.

SOMEWHERE IN THE JCU...

Buddy (aka "The Pugnisher") sits atop the ledge of a nearby building, resting on his hind legs and watching the crowd below. These kinds of rallies are trouble. They undermine unity in Jump City, and the last thing this Metropolis needs is a rise in anti-metahuman sentiment. Marking metas and Atlanteans? Optional or not, it’s an offensive idea born of paranoia. And if these people dislike metahumans so much, how would they feel about a sapient canine uplift like himself? Buddy already knows the answer, but the pug figures he’ll stick around in case the situation gets out of hand. He’s morbidly curious to see what a provocateur like Milo is planning to say...

The pug closes his eyes and listens, feeling the breeze blow across his fur. Humans are sight-based animals, and while Buddy considers himself smarter than most humans, he’s still a dog. Hearing and olfaction are his preferred senses; whenever possible, the pug likes to lead with his ears and nose. His senses are assaulted by hundreds of sounds and smells; some pleasant and others... not so much.

The cheering of the crowd forces Buddy to open his eyes. Milo has come on stage and, as expected, the humans mostly go nuts for him. The pug rolls his eyes and rests his head on his front paws, ready to be entertained. In seconds, however, his head perks up as someone dives on stage toward Milo, and a ball of fire emerges from somewhere in the crowd...

Jeffrey's perception was good enough to see the fireball an instant after it left the hand of the perp. He quickly grabbed the ambient moisture in the atmosphere and formed it into a ball that quelled the fire just before it reached the stage.

I had written her as flying above the city in costume doing a patrol. I figured she'd watch for trouble and then swoop in and save the day. If there's a bar where she can see trouble from above, she'd head there.

Unless I'm misreading the sociopolitical situation, wandering through crowds in costume seems like a bad idea.


Resonance circles over the busier bars in town, watching the back alleys and side streets for trouble, observing the queues lining up to get in. Everything seems pretty calm for now, but you never know when something is going to go haywire...

Johanna rips her hand away from Aaron Vick and glances toward the doors. She tells him tersely. "I need to go outside for a moment. But get your office ready because we have some things we need to discuss." Pocketing her cell phone she pulls her aviator shades down from her hair across her eyes. She tries best as she can to sneak outside against anyone who is rushing to get in for safety, to see without being seen who is doing the shooting.

Joey begins to sprint at the doors as they're slammed shut from the inside by the security personnel, and doesn't give shred of a hint that she has any intention of stopping. It seems like she's going to body-slam into it herself when, abruptly, a flash of light takes her and pulls through to the curbside, out of the club and on the street. Stealth be damned. Keeping her glasses attached to her face for identity concealment reasons, she looks around for where the perpetrator is. (some sweet mood music for us, Resonance!)

A person with flame throwers for hands. You just don't see that every day. She grins widely to herself and pumps her hands quickly in line with her sprint to get to a reasonable difference before... shlip! She blinks from being in front of the Red Rabbit to just behind the man with flaming hands, to leaping onto his back like a child on an adult's backside for a piggy back ride!

"Hi there!" She cheers into his ear while trying to keep him from moving or whipping his arms back around at her! But she's looking toward Resonance so maybe she's just saying hi to her and not to this guy.

Echolocation is an alternate effect of her Sound Control / Sonic Blast power. Sound Control is rated at 12, I'm not sure what to add to my roll, but here's the d20, we can add whatever modifiers are appropriate.

Not certain whether I’m next on the initiative. If so, then I use two move actions to get down from the rooftop and closer to the crowd.
Upon seeing the fireball, the Pugnisher’s eyes go wide. He then turns his tiny head to the super powered surfer supreme. He emits a series of growls and whines, followed by a few adorably emphatic barks.

"I had a feeling this event might get ugly. Looks like some other guy is on stage trying to calm things down. I say we head on over in case he needs back up. Time to protect the innocent and pugnish the guilty."

Buddy can’t speak English; only bark and growl as dogs do. However, he does have the ability to make people understand his barking as though they were fluent at speaking with canines. It’s a modified version of the Comprehend power.
Using his tiny legs, Buddy leaps a seemingly impossible distance from the rooftop toward the rally. And once he lands, he leaps again, taking to the air like a fur-covered arrow of justice.

I don’t know how far I am from the rally, but I can leap 1,800 feet in a single bound; I’m at a Speed rank of 7 while in mid air.

For Blinker, Evasion is more for area of effect attacks, such as if someone with super strength hits the ground to send everyone within 30ft. flying. Still at the mic with one hand on Milo's shoulder Jeffrey speaks into it in a very penetrating voice. "Hey, big guy. Quit being a bully. If you want to grab someone, be a hero instead and go grab the burning man." At the same time he shapes some portion of the light coming off Blitzfire creating a spotlight effect and scans the crowd in the direction he heard the voice looking for the big guy.

"DUDE, I'M BEING ATTACKED MORE! Riptide wraps himself up in the big guys arms and screams bloody murder, then falls over and rolls on the ground a bit and with a firm grip on both of his hands, I'll wrap them around my neck like he's choking me. I'm mostly trying to draw attention away from the rest of the scene, so I can drag it off a different direction.

I'll roll once and we will call that the group roll if that is all I need, and I'll roll a second set of 3 so there is a roll for each individual hound. I am OK with either method, however you want to run with it.

Riptide you are distracting the immediate surrounding crowd quite well, as they are very confused as to if you need saving or are attacking them, so the large man has left you alone, but everyone else is frozen, unsure if they should be running from you, or helping save you. Either way it has definitely bought time for the mutants.

Darkhound gives the order to pursue and then drops through her miasma cloud to teleport to their location.

I can use two move actions to travel up to Rank 10, or 4 miles in a turn. As long as they haven't done anything strange I should be able to get to them, then fly at 60ft turn to keep up with the car...at least for a bit.
