The train from Portland to Northern Maine, along the railroad to Canada, takes the two investigators up to Machias, which four miles away from Greyton. In Machias, the investigators find a Ford bus, which looks more like an old carriage, taking them to Greyton along a badly paved road.

Greyton lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, near to the border with Canada. The town counts few thousand inhabitants. Nestled in a bowl-shaped depression, the city is surrounded by a steep small hill to the West. The top of the West Hill hosts the church and a few houses. Southwest of Greyton the ground is level, and occasionally dotted by stands of hardwood. Arable farmland around here seems scarce.

The bus leaves the investigators at what appears to be the central area of the city. The buildings are enveloped in a dense and constant gray haze, looking like the city of London at the height of its commercial and industrial development. Most structures are large Georgian houses, with hipped roofs, cupolas, and railed widow's walks. There are also white belfry of fairly well preserved brick structures, one of which, a fishpacking company, stands out as the most modern building.

The investigators are told that the Herder Inn is the only possibility for tourists accomodation. It´s a few blocks from the bus point.

The Herder Inn is a five-story building, probably dating back to the nineteenth century. The place also works as a pub for the local people. As the group approaches the entrance, they see a person is standing at the doorway. As he see them coming, the man quickly runs inside. He looked somewaht.... concerned.

* to Mr. Edmond* "That's odd [referring to the man running inside]. . . maybe they don't get many visitors on the evening bus. Let's see about rooms and then perhaps we can strike up a conversation with some of the locals."
OOC:
Were there any other passengers on the bus? If so did any get off here?

The place is full of people and everybody looks at the strangers as they get in. Some persons were gathered around the man that has entered, as if he had given a kind of alarm. Everybody, including the man that ran inside, disperse in smaller groups and start talking to each other like nothing happened.

The place has a wide salon with wooden tables. Near the entrance is a counter and the door behind it communicates with the kitchen. There´s a stairway leading upward to the hotel rooms. The interior is rustic and welcoming. The walls have decorations that refer to sea and fishing topics: anchors, lifeguards, fishing nets, shells, whale bones. Photographs of fishermen posing with big fishes are exposed as trophies.

One of the embarassed waiters replies politely to the investigators, as soon as they asks for the rooms.
"Yes, of course, Sir. Please have a seat, oh.. We can accommodate you on the upper floor. The rooms are $2 at night, with meals provided. Do you want something to eat?"
OOC:
you were the only ones going to the Inn, the others in the bas were people going to their homes

*to waiter* Yes, some food would really hit the spot right about now after that long bus ride." *when the waiter leaves, to Mr. Edmond* "I am going to keep an eye on that fellow who ran in, and the others, for now. I am thinking about waiting until morning to ask around about Mr. Carson, if he did kidnap the kid I don't want him getting tipped off by a buddy. There is also the lighthouse to visit, easier by daylight."

I also say to the waiter yes some food would be great i whisper to Michael I agree you should keep an eye on that man who ran in really quickly. Maybe I don't know if you want maybe you should follow him? Seems a bit odd.

*quietly to Mr. Edmond after glancing around to make sure we are not overheard* "Good idea, if he leaves I'll follow him. You stay here though if that happens, as I said before, you are a civilian, I really shouldn't have let you get mixed up in a possible kidnapping to begin with."
May 5, 2019 4:56 pm
I whisper back I appreciate you letting me tag along and helping anyway I can.

After entering, the investigators moves among the table quickly exchanging some words with various people. All the people in the Inn, glance at the investigators quite often.

In Maine there is prohibition, actually it was the first to prohibit alcohol. Maybe the two investigators were mistaken for feds...

*asks server first, if no answer, various patrons who seem less suspicious of us than the others* "We are looking for a gentleman named Jason Carson, do you know where we might find him? It's sort of a . . . genealogical matter so it made sense to come in person, family records and such, you know."
May 7, 2019 3:42 pm
Michael finds a man that knows something about Carson. The guy is a fisherman, a good-looking young man, with light-brown unkempt hair. He´s wearing long old pants, overall and a patched shirt. He looks at Michael, with a mixture of curiosity and mistrust. His eyes seem to try to better understand the investigators´intentions.

"Humm... What to say about Carson... ? Jason Carson used to live here in Greyton. An orphan raised by Father Colby, the city´s priest. Some time ago, he emigrated to Portland and as far as I know he has never came back. Maybe father Colby can tell you more. You can find him at his home, at the top of the Will Hill, the one just biside the church. As you leave the inn, head west, pass the William Pelletier's farm and find the trail that leads up the hill. You cannot miss it. I warn you he is a gruff guy... at least with his folks... maybe he´s going to be kinder with strangers. I hope I have been helpful."
May 8, 2019 3:30 pm
*to the fisherman* "Thank you, can I buy you a drink? It's getting late so we will check with Father Colby in the morning. If Carson was an orphan, our genealogical research might not reveal much. But we are also interested in local history." *show him newspaper clipping* "Do you know anything about the Acadia wreck?"
OOC:
I think Michael would feel a little conflicted about buying alcohol, but since it is only the manufacture, sale, and transportation that is illegal, at worst he is aiding the establishment in committing a crime. Being from an Irish Catholic background, he was probably not for prohibition like many Protestants were.

The young man accepts the drink, but makes it clear he does not drink alchool. The way he says that suggest he definitely is for prohibition. If this Inn really sells alchool, this is not ok for everybody.
He heard about the wreck.

"That was one year ago I think... a schooner that went out for fishing. It happens. Yes, there was a storm in the bay. You need to talk to Thomas Cornel if you want to know more. He was the captain of the thing. You´ll find him at the harbor."
May 13, 2019 2:09 am
I turned to Michael and say we can go together or I could talk to Thomas Cornel at the harbor.

May 14, 2019 1:28 pm
I reply, "I think we should go together to visit Father Colby and Thomas Cornel, but it's getting late. Perhaps go to the lighthouse first, that seemed to be the focus of timothy's obsession, if by chance he is there, we can skip the other inquiries. Let's get some rest and start out tomorrow."
OOC:
