The next morning dawns, as pure and golden as the voice of the lark. You make your way across the river to the sandy courtyard and training field of the Kakita Dueling Academy, where the gray-haired sensei Kakita Toshimoko gives a brief speech reminding all present that the eyes of their clans, the eyes of their ancestors, and the eyes of the Empire are upon them. He introduces the current Topaz Champion, Kitsuki Yuikimi, and last year's runner—up, Bayushi Sugai, and instructs the contestants to direct any questions they have about the tournament to the two samurai.
A white—clad priest then emerges to bless the assembly, and the contest proper begins!

You have a few moments before the first contest, a Sumai bout, begins and you stand with the other competitors. Those you are familiar with such as Shiba Toya and Yasuki Jun exchange at least corteous nods (in the case of Jun they greet you with an overly friendly grin) whilst most of the others look accross you and the rest of the competitors with an appraising eye. Hitoshi stands to the side, somewhat isolated from the remaining competitors.
OOC:
You have a few moments to interact with the other competitors if you wish

Other competitors
Kakita Riku - female Crane bushi
Bayushi Mei Lin - female Scorpion bushi
Mirumoto Hinata - female Dragon bushi
Shiba Toya - male Pheonix bushi, met the previous night at the Tea House.
Moto Batbayar - female Unicorn bushi
Kitsu Tsubasa - male Lion shugenja.
Yasuki Jun - Crab Courtier, met the previous night at the Tea House
Hitoshi - male Mantis bushi, met the previous night at the Tea House
May 21, 2019 2:12 pm
Otaku returns any greeting bows courteously, initiates such with the Moto girl, and seeks out the Kakita. "Kakita-san, if this is your school, then I thank you and your family for hosting this wonderful event." She bows gratitude. "I suppose the pressure would be on any representative of the host to perform admirably."
May 21, 2019 2:21 pm
Yoshi wakes up early to do his morning stretches and meditation after which he joins the others as they leave to the Kakita Dueling Academy. He takes good notice of Kakita Toshimoko, the Doji Satsume's childless brother-in-law. "What could that letter mean?" he wonders. He greets back Shiba Toya and Yasuki Jun and approaches Hitoshi. "I hope you had a good night of rest after that confusion yesterday". He notices Kakita Riku the female Crane Otaku is talking to, thinking "There is a crane here after all... Could she be the one threatening the mantis? "

Aki stands slightly separate from the other participants. If she wants to do well and perform the task their group has been given last night, she really needs to focus. She also still thinks she has to talk to Kakita Toshimoko, although now hardly seems like the right time. She tries to calm her emotions to mentally prepare herself for the competition.

OOC:
No worries, I figured but just wanted to be sure.
Kashita - Kakita Riku turns slightly as you approach. As per most Crane she is impeccably dressed in an ornate pale blue kimono, half of her hair is dyed white which she has weaved into a striking black and white braid. She returns your bow, bowing a hairs breadth short of what you would expect for someone of equal social standing and regards you for a moment. "Greetings Otaku-san. I am indeed a student at the academy here and I was honored to be chosen to represent my school and clan in the Topaz Championship however any praise should rightfully be directed to Toshimoko-Sama" she pauses for a moment and smiles slightly "I suppose the contest would cause some to feel more pressure than others" her eyes flicker over to where Hitoshi is standing "some more than the rest of us"

Yoshi - as you approach the Mantis samurai you see that although he is trying to put forward a calm demeanor he is obviously quite tense. As he notices you he seems to relax a touch and smiles and bows in greeting "Greetings Togashi-san. I did rest well, thank you again for your assistance in the matter"
May 23, 2019 11:02 am
"Make nothing of it. Helping another is helping oneself." Yoshi looks at the other contestants and then asks Hitoshi "What do you think about the other participants? Everyone here seems to take this Championship maybe a bit too seriously". Yoshi, as a monks, wouldn't normally bother with this type of events.

Otaku obviously, at least to Riku, follows her gaze to the young Mantis. "The Mantis and the Crane share and compete in the same waters. I imagine the footsteps of both clans echo loudly in each other's ears. My clan, too, has experienced some reticence to make space for us after our return. Events like this allow us to meet each other in person, rather than in rumor. I am grateful for the opportunity to meet you, Kakita-san, and look forward to seeing how each of us showcases honour."
May 23, 2019 12:19 pm
Yoshi - Hitoshi blinks, obviously quite surprised "Well, yes, I suppose they are. It is hardly surprising though given the expectations placed upon the competitors here. To fail ones Gempuku would be shameful enough but to fail with the eyes of the other clans on you would be almost too much to bear"
May 24, 2019 6:54 am
Yoshi goes around making small talk with the other contestants, particularly Yasuki Jun since he looks friendly, but with nothing really to ask for the moment. At some point in this he will meet Isawa Aki "Strange start of the day, wouldn't you say?"
OOC:
He is referring to ghosts ;)
May 24, 2019 8:36 am
"Very strange indeed", she replies quietly. "And it worries me that there seem to be things going on that we do not yet understand. If there is some plot to disrupt the tournament, we should keep an eye on the Scorpion. Did he not strike you as strange during our travel to this place?"
May 24, 2019 8:54 am
"Indeed the scorpion is poisonous, but I also see the cranes hovering above us". Yoshi looks at briefly at Otaku Kashita and Kakita Riku briefly, and them moves his gaze to Kakita Toshimoko before continuing. "And we still have that letter..."

Before you can continue your thoughts a dull, sonorous ringing of a gong sounds out indicating the start of the first contest, the Sumai bout. You all quickly prepare yourselves, changing your dress to clothing appropriate for the traditional form of wrestling. As you all enter the training yard you can see a priest drawing a large circle into the sand and making it with rope whilst another splits all of the competitors into pairs and blesses them.

Whilst this is going on the judge, Hida Goroharu of the Crab Clan, stands before you all. "Remember," the judge says, "In sumai, as in life, a steady stance creates a solid foundation for success.".
OOC:
Ok, all I am needing for this is a description from each of you detailing your approach to the bout. You will then need to make a TN 2 Martial Arts [Unarmed] check, the ring used for the check will be determined by your approach (feel free to suggest which one you think is most appropriate based on your approach) and remember if you use the approach (i.e.the Ring type) favoured by the judge you will earn extra points.
May 29, 2019 12:35 am
Otaku enters the ring, facing against her opponent. She isn't skilled at this sort of movement, but thinks of her horse. The horse is a power, and she braces against it, using its solidity to enhance her own strikes. As they circle each other in the ring, she plants each foot, inviting and attack, ready for it.

3: Opportunity
6: Explosive success & Strife
Explosive: 6 explosive success & strife
Explosive #2: 2 OPP & Strife (foregone)

Result: 1 OPP, 2 successes, 1 Str

"As the rocks and the mountains stand tall, we too must walk the path of steadiness" Yoshi whispers to himself some mantra as he enters the sand circle, breathing in slowly as he studies his adversary. He stands as a mountain, unmovable and resisting all elements, feeling as one with his surroundings

If you are keeping the Explosive success you may as well roll the additional die and decide if you want to keep it as an aditional 'bonus' kept die
CESN says:
I can keep up to 3 dice right?
ring 5/6(3) and skill 10:
3 success, 2 opportunity and 1 strife
OOC:
Yeah that's right but remember any additonal dice from Explosive successes do not count towards your limit of Kept dice if you decide you want to add them to your final Kept pool
May 29, 2019 9:52 am
When Aki steps into the ring, she hesitates, unsure of what stance to take. She knows that the judge wants to see a firm, unmoving stance but that is far from her specialty. Taking this into account as well as the fact that her opponent is expecting her to be steady and grounded, she decides to go on the offensive instead, attacking quickly and directly.
OOC:
Edit 1: I take the Explosive and roll 1 additional
OOC:
Edit 2: I take the 6 and the 5 - an explosive success with strife and a regular success

Whilst the judge frowns at Aki's approach he begrudgingly confers the point for her performance in the contest. He is however much more pleased with Kashita and Yoshi's performances, the dragon monk even earning a number of complimentary comments on his style from the watching samurai. The only samurai who failed to achieve the required standard are Kitsu Tsubasa and Yasuki Jun however Jun does not seem overly upset at the turn of events.

You all have a short time to wash and prepare yourselves for the next contest, the Heraldry competition.
OOC:
Yoshi earns a point of Glory for their performance. You have a few minutes to interact with the other competitors or each other if you want to before the Heraldry contest.

Aki knows that the judges disapprove of the approach she took for the first challenge but she also knows that she has to play to her strengths if she wants to have a chance in this competition. Hopefully, she will be able to perform more to the judges' liking.
She bows and thanks the judge.

During the break, she walks up to Yoshi and says: "That was a very impressive performance. Well done."

CESN says:
Yoshi will bow to the judge and thank him for his kind compliments. "Hida-sama, thank you very much for your kind and inspiring words".
Hida Goroharu grunts, seeming less than impressed "Kindness was not my intent Togashi-san. You did well and earned the victory. Nothing more" he nods at you and Aki and moves away as the shugenja comes to talk with you.
Jun 1, 2019 7:58 am
Yoshi turns to Aki "Indeed, the fortunes were on my side. However, it is not but the first stone for us to step". He looks around, checking the other contestants. "Your approach was very interesting. The void brings the creativity that changes the tides of fate and indeed the fire may just be strong enough to scorch the earth". After another cryptic piece of knowledge, something that everybody has been missing ;) Yoshi continues "I wonder how the little mantis fared"

You have only had a short while to mingle before the gong sounds for the next contest, the Heraldry contest. You are directed to another area within the Kakita dojo and find yourselves waiting in front of a small gallery. The judge for this competition, Doji Murashige of the Crane Clan, stands in front of you all. "Consider, that the design of each heraldic emblem contains clues as to its origins that can be unlocked with careful study." the judge says before gesturing to one of the competitors to enter and begin.

You are each taken, one at a time, into the gallery and presented with five pieces of heraldry. Doji Murashige gestures to them "Please identify these". The first is obviously the heraldry of one of the Great Clans but the rest seem to be increasingly obsure. Murashige Sama waits patiently.....
OOC:
This competition will require a TN 2 Culture check and remember a bonus point will be available for meeting the judges preferred approach and another for beating the front runner (passing the check with bonus successes)
Jun 3, 2019 2:49 pm
"Indeed, history, more than symbols is what defines us most" Yoshi says as he starts looking for clues in the strange emblems that would reveal their clan. However, as he fails to analyse the intricate symbols, he changes his approach to recall them.
OOC:

Great rolls! One blank, two opportunities and two strife.

I’m assuming I can only use one opportunity to "demonstrates their determination", if not I use both :) this could be related to the RPed changing approach from air to earth

Otherwise I may check on Hitoshi with the other opportunity and take 2 strives.

Aki kneels in front of the emblems and inspects them carefully. Again, the judge seems to ask for calm and thorough thinking which unfortunately is not her specialty. She decides to do the next best thing. She takes a deep breath, centers herself and then tries to see through the items to the deeper meaning behind them.

Yoshi - just as you are heading into the heraldry competition you glance over at Hitoshi and realise something that has been lingering on the edge of your mind since you met the Mantis. Seeing him stood amongst so many members of the Crane clan you are struck by how much he resembles members of that clan, most mantis that you have encountered previously favour their Crab ancestry. Perhaps these thoughts intrude on you overly as you enter the contest as you find it hard to focus on the task at hand and whilst you do as well as you can you can tell from Doji Murashige's disapproving expression you have failed to reach the required mark.
Aki - As you stare at the five pieces in front you you let your mind wander, speaking more our of instinct than from any real sense of recollection. As you reach the end of your inspired recitation you realise you are not sure how long you have been talking. As you look up you see a surprised expression on Doji Murashige's face before he nods at you in satisfaction.

Kashita - As you stare at the emblems you try to center yourself but you find it keeps slipping away from you, the confines of the gallery pressing in on you and you find yourself missing the clarity that so easily comes to you on the open steppes. As your words falter Doji Murashige shakes his head slightly before dismissing you.

OOC:
How about admiration from the Doji for her poise under pressure.
Jun 7, 2019 12:46 pm
OOC:
Sounds good
Kashita - as you are about to leave Doji Murashige says to wait a moment. As you turn you can see quite a surprised look on their face as they study one of the more obscure pieces. It is one which you failed to identify but your thoughts had lingered on several of the finer, more energetic background imagery "I had never considered that aspect on this piece before. Your approach was certainly unexpected but it appears to have revealed equally surprising meaning in this". As you leave he is studying the other pieces with a renewed interest.

All - as the Heraldry contest draws to a close you can see a number of samurai giving quiet congratulations to Kitsu Tsubasa for his performance in this event. From what you can glean the Lion Shugenga was the only competitor to successfully identify all five pieces. Hitoshi and Moto Batbayar appear somewhat subdued and you assume they both failed to achieve the required standard.

You have but a short moment before you are ushered off to prepare for the Athletics contest. After you have changed into more appropriate attire you are lead to the edge of the forest outside of Tsuba where an obstacle course appears to have been assembled. The judge, Kakita Naomori of the Crane Clan, stands before you all. "The best way to overcome the obstacles of your fate is by being flexible enough to adapt to them." she says before the gong sounds to signal the start of this event.
OOC:
The contestants are expected to run it two by two. The course is a winding path through the forest, beginning and ending near the Kakita gardens. The obstacles include a log laid across a rushing stream, a pit of mud with hanging ropes to swing across, and a tall-but-uneven wall to climb. The competition is a TN 2 Fitness check.
Jun 7, 2019 12:51 pm
Again, Aki sees herself confronted with a challenge she is not an expert at but she decides to do her best in trying to follow the judges wishes for this challenge. She stretches her limbs and gets ready to begin at the sound of the gong. She does not plan ahead for the course, instead opting to deal with each obstacle when she reaches it, adapting and moving in response to them.
OOC:
I'll take the explosive success with strife and roll again for the explosion. Another success with Strife. I'm really filling up on strife right now but what can I do? xD I guess I'll take it for 2 Successes with 2 Strife...?

Whilst you all comport yourselves admirably during the Athletics contest both Aki and Kashita find the added element of running the course against someone to add an undue amount of presure to the procedings. Onthe other hand for Yoshi the course has a certain familiarity, bringing back memories of some of the training you would perform at the monastary.

Kakita Naomori nods in satisfaction at each of your performances, your approaches seeming to please the Crane. As Yoshi finishes he smiles "The reputation of the Ise Zumi is well known. It pleases me to know it is not unfounded" and he favours the monk with a short bow.

Out of the other competitors you note that Mirumoto Hinata did particularly well but surprisingly Hitoshi, despite seeming to run the course adequately, failed to reach the mark. As the now familiar gong sounds to indicate that you should make you way to the stables for the Horseback riding contest you notice the Mantis seems particularly tense at their recent performance.

Adjacent to the obstacle course for the athletics trial, a long series of ropes and flags have been erected on a cleared field for the horseback riding trial. Contestants must mount one of the provided horses, ride to the end of the field, collect a flag, ride back, then take an offered spear and collect rings on it from where they hang at various points across the course. Contestants will be judged both on speed and grace. The judge for this contest is Utaku Oichi of the Unicorn Clan, as you approach they smile at you "To tame a steed, you must be as fierce and bold as the horse. Good luck!". As the judge finishes speaking you hear the gong sound again and the contestants all start running to the available mounts.
OOC:
This contest will require a TN 1 Survival check.

That'll only be 2 successes I'm afraid - the extra effects for being in certain stances only apply during Conflict scenes.
The contest is over almost before you all realise it. Whilst they both fail to make the mark, Aki and Yoshi both receive comforting and complimentary words from the judge after for your efforts and approach to the contest, the only other two competitors not to achieve success in the Horseback riding are Hitoshi and Mirumoto Hinata. On the other hand Kaashita almost makes the event look easy and is only just edged out of the top spot by Moto Batbayar.

Again you have a short time to refresh yourselves and mingle before the Conduct contest begins...

Yoshi - as you finish and dismount as well as you can you take note of something about Mirumoto Hinata you had previously not realised. Whilst it would be understandable for her to show a somewhat heightened level of defference to other samurai after failing in the event it occurs to you that the Bushi behaves in such a manner during most of their interactions you have observed previously they seem to defer to others, even in some instances towards the servants.

Given that there is a time to relax before the next task, Yoshi approaches Hinata, who he noticed from her great performance in a previous challenge. "I am glad to see there are other dragons in this tournament. Togashi Yoshi, it is a pleasure to meet you. I slightly bow as appropriate as I introduce myself to the dragon lady.

Mirumoto Hinata returns your bow, in a notably deeper fashion than would normally required between equals "It is a pleasure to meet you Togashi Sam....San" she averts her face slightly at the momentary slip before regaining her composure. "I must say I was surprised to hear one of your order had been selected for the championship. It is quite rare to hear of a monk competing"
Jun 20, 2019 12:14 pm
"Indeed, dear Hinata. I too find Togashi Yokuni-sama's interest in this tournament to be a peculiar curiosity. But I sense the Kharmic Wheel is turning and, perhaps, so did the Dragon champion". Yoshi briefly pauses in contemplation. "I wish you the best for the following challenges. We shall meet again soon if fate so has it"

How does this sama thingy work in Japanese? I guess it should be Togashi-sama, but they are all Togashi!!! Is Yokuni-sama's valid?

OOC:
I'm not 100% sure about actual Japanese but in the pseudo-Japanese that is L5R you would use the San suffix to refer to someone of equal or lower standing (but not towards someone under your social class (so a Samurai would not refer to a peasant as San)) and Sama to refer to someone of a higher standing.

If you are not familiar with someone from within your clan you would usually use their family name-san or sama (dependent on station) but if they were from another clan you would most likely refer to them as clan-San/Sama (i.e. Crane-San, Dragon-Sama) until you became more familiar with them.

I'm not going to play too hard on the above, I feel it adds flavor but I'm certainly not going to penalize anyone in game for not getting it right unless you make it clear you are misusing someones title deliberately (if you wanted to refer to someone of a lower standing as Sama to indicate you feel they are reaching above their station for example)

Thanks for refreshing that. It's really useful for this type of game (and I wouldn't have noticed what you did there without it ;)

It just feels weird that she called me Togashi-san and then I go and say, you know what, Togashi-sama is really weird. How would she even know who I am talking about with the legion of Togashis that wander about the world? 🤯🤯🤯

Well calling you Togashi-san wouldn't strike Yoshi as completely unusual given that you've only just met (if she was discussing you with someone else and you weren't present she would probably use your full name) but the slip of referring to almost using the Sama suffix is notable.
She nods at Yoshi's comment, seeming quite relieved not to have attention drawn to her misstep, before bowing again "And you too Togashi-san"
OOC:
I'll be moving this along later but just wanted to give a final chance in case anyone else wants to do anything before the final competition of the day, the Conduct trial
Jun 20, 2019 1:08 pm
Kashita approaches the Moto, saying, "Moto-san, you road like the wind, as should have been expected. It would have been uncomfortable if the Unicorn did not place well in this event." She bows lightly showing acknowledgement.
Jun 20, 2019 2:31 pm
The Unicorn Bushi turns and smiles at Kashita whilst returning her bow, her dark skin and curly hair hinting that she may have some gaijin ancestry (not uncommon within the Unicorn clan due to their travels beyond the empire) "That we both placed so well shows well of our clan. Hopefully we can continue to represent ourselves well in the remaining events.".
Jun 24, 2019 8:21 pm
As you all finish freshening up you hear the sound of another gong signalling it is time to begin the final contest of the day, the Conduct trial. You find yourselves lined up outside the same gallery in which the Heraldry contest took place. Standing before you are three samurai, Shosuro Tomoe of the Scorpion Clan, Doji Murashige of the Crane Clan, and Ikoma Ikehata of the Lion Clan. These are the judges whom you must demonstrate your knowledge and training in the correct way to comport oneself.

Doji Murashige stands slightly ahead of the others and regards you all with a look of distinct doubt in your coming performance. "I hope that you recall the lessons of your parents well when comporting yourself as a samurai should." he says before gesturing for the first one of you to follow him and the other judges inside.
OOC:
Each judge asks the contestant a question of etiquette, courtesy, or ceremony, with possible follow-up questions if they find the answer inadequate. Contestants are also graded on their conduct during the test. The questions range from the deceptively simple ("who receives the last cup in the tea ceremony?") to the excruciatingly specific ("the Topaz Champion meets an Emerald Magistrate at a bridge wide enough for only one samurai to cross; who must bow and defer to the other?"). This trial uses either Culture or Courtesy, chosen by the hero player, and is TN 2.
Jun 24, 2019 8:46 pm
Kashita considers the tenor and implications of the questions, and does her best to be polite and courteous, even though she knows there are subtle and devious traps laid out for her.

Yoshi listens carefully to the questions made by the three samurai, in respectful silence. He slowly considering the words and speaks only in his turn. As he does it... he tries to recall the lessons from the monastery and answer accordingly. However, the intricacies of courtly courtesy is something he has little experience with, being a more down-to-earth monk. Even though his determination and understanding is clear, he fails to demonstrate the practical social finesse required.

Going into the task, Aki is feeling a bit restless. These previous tasks have already exhausted her more than she would have imagined. Although the judges have asked to think deeply and consider the lessons of her past, she falls back into what comes easiest to her: quick, direct responses with a hint of unconventional thinking that - she hopes - won't count against her in the evaluation of the task.
OOC:
Edit: Taking the explosive success with strife and rolling one more

The line of questioning from the three judges is quite different. Whilst Doji Murashige focuses on matters of courtly etiquette Ikoma Ikehata's questions revolve around matters of protocol when fighting serving under a Daimyo in the field and during battles. Shosuro Tomoe's questions are the hardest to deal with as they do not seem to follow any predicable pattern, often placing you in situations where any action you could take would leave you in a situation where you would lose face, leaving you to try and determine the solution with the lesser impact on yourselves.

Kashita - Whilst you find the questions levelled at you by Doji Murashige to be mostly beyond your experience and leaving you desperately trying to trawl your memory for answers you find those posed by Ikoma Ikehata to be almost simplistic in comparison with the Lion judge nodding in satisfaction at your answers to the Crane judges almost scowl of disatisfaction. Shosuro Tomoe's questions take you quite by surprise, mostly focusing on the proper way for a Samurai to interact with gaijin leaving you to wonder whether the Scorpion is trying to trap you in some admission of impropriety. You are almost surprised when Doji Murashige sighs and nods after you successfully answer one of Ikoma Ikehata's questions before dismissing you with an almost begrudging acknowledgement of you achieving the required standard to pass.
OOC:
Qralloq - The reroll for that is fine
Yoshi - such matters of conduct are mostly beyond you, the finer points of courtly behaviour falling outside of your training in the monastery. The bemused looks on the faces of the judges, Doji Murashige in particular, informs you before they even say anything that you have not done well however Shosuro Tomoe makes a comment seeming to genuinely acknowledge your effort in the contest.
OOC:
CESN - man, that's a rough roll! I'm assuming you're just keeping one die to get the opportunity you mentioned?
Aki - whilst your training has also been focussed on area's other than those of court or battlefields you find that your experience of dealing with and entreating the Kami to be somewhat translatable. By transposing the various parties in the scenarios to be differing Kami in your mind you find it almost simple to provide acceptable answers and even Doji Murashige seems happy with your answers by the end of the contest. As you finish he gives you a satisfied nod and dismisses you.

As you all gather outside you notice there is a board with the current standings listed. Leading the competition, and being the only competitor so far to have enough points to have achieved their Gempuku, is Kashita. Aki and Yoshi are both listed as being joint second, just below the line to have also achieved their Gempuku. The other competitors are all jostling for position beneath the three of you with Hitoshi being dead last with a single point currently. As you take in the board and the remarks of congratulations directed to Kashita in particular there is the sound of another gong. As it rings out you all turn to see Kakita Toshimoko standing with last years champion, Kitsuki Yuikimi, and the runner up of last years contest Bayushi Sugai. Toshimoko regards all of the competitors with a wide smile before speaking "Today has been a testing day for you all but happily most of you have done your clans and the Emperor proud. As such food and sake have been provided for you all at the Poisoned Water Sake House. Go and relax tonight and return to us tomorrow refreshed for the remaining contests!". There is a polite applause as the slightly inappropriate dismissal before you and the other contestants find yourselves heading to the Sake house.
OOC:
Can everyone make me a Sentiment (Water) roll as you watch Toshimoko and the other two Samurai during his short speech. This will be the last thing we do in this scene so everyone's strife will drop down to half their Composure rating at the beginning of the next scene if it's already higher than that.
Jun 28, 2019 12:20 am
Kashita politely accepts the congratulations given to her with mixed emotions. She is used to success and used to having the way pointed out for her by her powerful grandmother. Here, she had to truly apply herself without knowing what was expected. She this expected much of herself, while being surprised to achieve it.

She wonders how the others will fair.

ahah yes. I guess I could keep all and use the opportunities to remove strife 🤣

mcneils5 says:
so everyone's strife will drop down to half their Composure rating at the beginning of the next scene
OOC:
So it only drops to half and not half? Do we recover if we have less than half? How does it work to recover strife? As a monk I'd probably be meditating daily

As Kakita Toshimoko speaks, Yoshi glances quickly around the crowd, trying to gauge everyone's feelings, particularly wondering about the noticeable bad result from the Mantis.
OOC:
3 and 2 is one opportunity plus one opportunity and strife.
* if the strife will be down to half regardless you it's value, I'll take the two
* If there is a way of decreasing below half (or resting) I'll have to consider a bit better. Is there any use of two opportunities for a failed action?

OOC:
Poisoned Water Sake House? That is... suspicious...

Aki is very exhausted after these events and is very much looking forward to spending some time alone in quiet meditation to prepare for the next day. However, she knows that she can't do that just yet. She and her traveling companions were told, by a spirit no less, to keep an eye on Hitoshi and she is not planning to forget about this. She will have to find some time to talk to him later at the sake house.
OOC:
I'm keeping one opportunity but I'm not sure what to use it for. Maybe I can get a read on how Hitoshi is doing with it? If that's not applicable at this point, I can just remove a strife, I guess

OOC:
Correct, if you have a number of Strife over half of your Composure rating you remove Strife until it is equal to half your Composre Rating rounded up. If your Strife is below half of your Composure rating it stays as it is. If you had had chance to Meditate, take part in a Tea Ceremony, or undertake some other activity that your character finds calming then you would have the option to potentially recover some more but today has been very busy for all of your characters and you have not had the opportunity to do anything like that so far (purely a circumstance of this being a pretty railroady scenario)

Ok, so I keep both dice, since th strife will go away ;)

So... I failed the Sentiment (Water) roll during the short speech. There is not specific way mentioned but demonstrating that yoshi is determined to listen the speech is not really suitable... so, detail about Hitoshi and his single point and about Kakita Toshimoko?
Jul 2, 2019 2:04 pm
OOC:
And I will spend my opportunity to get an insight on Hitoshi. I also failed the sentiment roll, though
Jul 2, 2019 7:47 pm
As he is stood amongst the Crane courtiers and other Samurai you are both struck by how much Hitoshi fits in amongst them. He displays very similar characteristics that typify most Crane.

As Yoshi watches Kakita Toshimoko reach the point of their speech where they say "...most of you have done your clans and the Emperor proud" they make a very pointed look at Hitoshi making it plain he does not consider the mantis to be part of that distinction.
