Emotions...are not something Alice is good at. Anxiety caused by bullying before she was taken in by the jedi at age 10. It was rather intense bullying considering their age and Alice's lack of any sort of companionship or protective figure. Once taken in, she abandoned talking to people, hiding away in corners and reading. After all, failing tests would mean being kicked out, being kicked out would mean more bullying, right? That was the driving force behind her several years of intense study without so much as learning the names of her peers. There's about a 50% chance she'd recognise one by sight. Anyone in her classes were potential bullies. Why would they be kind to her? No one else had.
Detecting her emotional baggage and her refusal to deal with it, she was almost refused from being a padawan but they couldn't turn down her amazing academic scores and intuitive learning of the healing arts using the force. They rationalised that her problems would be sorted out with the right kind of master to draw her out into being a true jedi.
