Journey to Arkania - Prelude - Day 1 - Teachers

The Boundless is a new ship, still scented from its manufactured state with chemical cleanliness. The carpets immaculate, the walls freshly installed and spotless. But what really stands out is the conference table, a spotless, gleaming transparasteel devoid of any marring or mark as of yet.

Around it sits a collection of Jedi Knights and Masters, speaking via hologram with Master Seidon Fell, an older Caamassi who is well known in the Jedi Order for acting as a surrogate for the will of the High Council. In fact Master Fell has been offered a seat on the Council three times and turned it down each time. "So," he says in a slow, calming voice, "that is it for a supply review. The Council has given a suggestion to pass on to you." His voice is melodic but the cadence suggests a care from Basic not being his first language. "A survival instruction for your students. Safely simulating a shuttle crash and instructing them to make their way to the academy on foot. Your thoughts?"

Since no-one speaks up, Dynnyana shrugs from where she is sitting, her robe arms tied nonchalantly around her waist, exposing a well-cut black tunic and her bare arms that fiddle with a comm pad. "wouldn't be too hard. Might be good to shake up some of these delicate flowers." She smirks at her fellow knights, just waiting for them to disagree or call her out, whether for how casual she looks with her blonde hair down, or for her bored demeanor.

"A simple change to the autopilot, put the computer on standby after it sets down. Have them walk twenty kilometers to base. Might even give them a chance to work together a bit on the way." Nathan's cultured and smooth tones do little to conceal his general amusement at forcing a bunch of city kids to camp for a bit as he gives a small smile to Dynyanna, "We could take the emergency rations off the shuttle, too. Just to make it a bit harder."

Charlie, who instead of sitting down opted to stand behind his chair, hands folded on its ornate back (likely because he found it not very comfortable to sit with the axe on his back) and his leather-clad fingers softly tapping on it, hums in contemplation. "The idea of giving them a field test is good - nothing is as great a teacher as practice, - but simulating a crash seems a bit excessive. I'm confident in their ability to do it on their own, they are a tough lot, but I'd much rather not have any students in a stressful situation right upon their arrival. Things like this just beg to brew conflict. And I do know a lot about conflicts!" He outright winks at the other Jedi and then straightens up, his gaze returning to the hologram. "It is a test of their own, but we should at least let them train as a team before it, lay the foundations to the idea." Charlie grows silent, crosses his hands on his chest anf looks around, one brow raised in half-challenge, half-question.
OOC:
To clarify: I assume that Padawans do have group studies, just not team-focused ones. XD

Veria sips from a cup of tea, her long snow-white hair gathered at the back in a ponytail. "It doesn't have to be stressful, does it?
We could have the shuttle land a two day trek from the Academy grounds. Leaving them without food or water though,"
she murmurs as she sips her tea again, "That does seem stressful. In the middle sounds wisest. They have to make their way to the Academy on foot but they know about the test beforehand and are allowed to keep the emergency supplies on the shuttle." It's ironic to hear someone talk about wisdom when they're so young, barely older than the Padawans themselves but she makes a good show of being serenely wise. For a nineteen year old.

Zatee folds his arms and leans back in his chair. "This could be a good opportunity for some of the students to learn how to work together and not be so abrasive towards their allies," he muses quite obviously about his own padawan. "But we should still keep a close eye on them so they don't get themselves in too much danger should thing go awry."

Dynnyana rolls her eyes at Veria's comment. "I agree with Zatee," she begins, "but are we teaching them to be self-sufficient in a crisis, or how to follow orders in a pre-planned event? We can't tell them about it, or it doesn't count as an emergency." She looks around at the other knights and masters. "If they can't handle a fake shuttle craft crash, then we'll know to stick them in the library and the garden. They can become 'one with the Force' until their teeth fall out."

Ziel folds his arms as he leans back in his chair. None too comfortable with these formal Jedi meetings and unused to people valuing his opinions on policy, he remains quiet at first as the other Jedi speak up. He tries to look busy for some of the time by skimming the Padawans' dossiers.

oops! I just wrote that before reading what nightghoul wrote

"Keeping an eye on them should be easy enough. The Boundless should be able to track them from orbit." The oversized human mulls carefully on his thoughts, absently rubbing his chin. "A lot of the students seem coddled and ill-disciplined in my opinion. A bit of a lesson up front is certainly called for." He turns to face Charlie, "Master West, I agree with your reasoning that this situation will brew conflict, but that's what we -should- be doing; brewing conflict while we are here to observe and intervene and help them learn from it. The simulation need not be extreme. We tell them on their departure that they're taking part in a test and have the shuttle's auto-pilot drop them off a few days distant from the Academy. If they run into trouble we can just go and pick them up. Thoughts?"

"I don't object to giving them a chance to solve their problems themselves and to try a hand at an emergency situation."He looks towards Dynnyana with a nod and a half-smile, half-smirk. "And neither do I object to not telling them about the test beforehand. Not telling can push them to act unpredictably, telling will make the situation easier to monitor, but there're pros to both. I do think the supplies should stay, though."
He turns back to Nathan. "The thing that worries me, Master Kaine, is that there is a probability of all of them striking on their own. Sure, some will stick together, but there's no lack of overachievers and loners among Jedi, and this group is no exception. If the point (or one of the points) is to teach them to work together, how are we planning to intervene if they separate? Completing the test alone will just reinforce that they need no one else." Charlie shrugs. "Maybe we can have the terrain itself work for us. Are there any canyons or caves in the vicinity of the Academy?"

Frowning thoughtfully, Knight Kaine gives Shark a small nod, "I must admit I hadn't thought any of them would be foolish enough to separate from the group but . . . why roll those dice?" He gives a small smirk as he pulls up a map of Arkania, zooming in on the area around the academy grounds. There's a few quiet taps as he enlarges the image, transferring it to sit beside Master Fell on the holographic display. "There's a canyon here. The river feeds directly into the Academy's water supply. If they follow it they eventually get to the water treatment plant. From there the Academy would likely be visible."

Dynnyna nods. "Good idea. If any of them try to strike out on their own, we'll know those students need some extra help. Nobody should be leaving anyone behind or getting it into their heads that going it alone is the smarter choice. We're supposed to be raising heroes, not mercenaries." She, of all the Jedi there, knows the difference, and her solid gaze meeting each of their eyes makes it clear she is fully aware and securely owns her past.

"Well," Veria begins, setting down her tea up after a long sip. "-I- think that's exactly the sort of lesson that some of them will need. Why being a Jedi is better than being a mercenary." She gives Dynyanna a haughty sort of nod of agreement. "More than a few of them seem to be headed down the road of leaving the Order, or worse." Giving a quiet snort of irritation she drains the rest of her tea, looking mildy irritable before clearing her throat and touching her chest as she calms herself. "Forgive me, I'm a bit nervous about having a Padawan. I honestly didn't expect to be assigned one for another few years at least."
Jun 17, 2019 8:42 pm
"Alright then, it seems that we are mostly in agreement." Zatee leans forward places his hands on the armrests and stands up. "Shall we begin preparations for the exercise?" as he looks around the room at the other masters.

As the Knights and Masters work, they discover more about the surface of Arkania, a planet so cold and rocky that even the equator could be best described as 'a ski lodge' in terms of terrain and vegetation. The Academy grounds have been prebuilt by droid labor and the Boundless carries more than enough supplies to last the year until the Academy is self-sufficient.

Their preparations are interrupted by a Mirillian Republic naval officer, his green skin clashing quietly with the Orange uniform. He salutes sharply, with a small smile, "Master Jedi," he blinks then pauses, "master Jedis?" He clears his throat with a small wince. "I am captain Zeth Drexim. The Boundless is ready to get underway as soon as your students have been brought on board. One of them seems to be missing, according to the passenger lists, though." He pulls a small datapad from his belt, "Ian Maxwell."

Dynnyana chuckles. "Not surprised." Looking around at the masters and knights, she asks, "So who wants to go with me to find him? I'm sure he's planning some prank as usual." She goes to stand, unwrapping the robe from around her waist and sloppily folding it before putting it down at her seat. Inwardly, though, she can't help but feel a bit sorry for Ian. She understands him in a way that most Jedi cannot...

Steef comes in running "sorry i came in late" and sits and listens and says "what did i miss"
Jun 25, 2019 6:22 pm
Pursing her lips and closing her eyes in an attempt to make herself appear older and more mature (and only managing a mockery of it), Veria sets down her tea. "Well, Knight Steef, we have just been given orders to prepare a survival exercise for the students. They're going to be landing a couple days away from the academy and will have to trek there." She looks so prim and proper as she pours herself another cup of tea. "And that," she sips her tea to avoid saying something crass, "very colorful Padawan Maxwell is apparently missing."
Jun 25, 2019 6:46 pm
Steef says in worried voice "well what time are we dropping them i says we should drop them in the night"

The door to the meeting room slid open unexpectedly. A tall weathered man looking to be in his 40's with grey streaked dark hair entered. His outer robe looked wrinkled from disuse as if it had been kept in a storage trunk rather than worn. The man wore an old set of fatigue-like clothing. It was faded and worn in places from hard use. A blaster pistol was holstered on his right hip and next to it hung the blackened silver shaft of a lightsaber.

The man looked around the room meeting each individual's eyes before moving to the next. He projected an air of relaxed vigilance taking in every detail of the room as he did the same for each person.

"Sorry for being late to the party",the man said with a half smile, "I'm Merrick Durn, newly assigned to this errand of vital immediacy. I just got in from Hutt Space and managed to get on this crate before it debarked. So, what have I missed?

Seeing no open seats at the table, Merrick leaned against the wall and waited.
