03: High Spirits

Jul 4, 2019 12:50 pm
You all have barely had chance to process the results of the first day of the championship before you are swept with the other contestants and make your way to the Poisoned Water Sake House. Whilst most of the contestants seem in high spirits as the servants of the sake house see to their needs Hitoshi sits somewhat sullenly near one wall and has thus far refused any efforts to engage him with the festivities.
Jul 4, 2019 1:03 pm
Aki looks at the others who attended the tea ceremony with the deceased Doji Satsume but instead of speaking to them, she then moves over to the Mantis. She sits down next to him and says: "Do not be concerned, Hitoshi-San. There is still a full day of challenges tomorrow, and the spirits are looking kindly upon you. If you stay determined, you will achieve your gempuku."

OOC:
You wish! ;)
Yoshi will leave Hitoshi to Aki, as not to make it too obvious everyone noticed how bad he did. He will approach Mirumoto Hinata, while keeping an eye on Kakita Riku and any other crane around, trying to figure out where the danger to the Mantis' live may be hiding. "Good to see you once again Mirumoto-san.Congratulations on your results. With another day to go, I feel you will achieve your gempuku easily. I hope you're enjoying your sake and relaxing. "
OOC:
some sort of checking out roll is in order I presume? Is there any other option besides another sentiment water?
One success and one opportunity and strife. I'll keep the success because that strife is going up quickly!

Rolls

sentiment water - (2d6)

Kashita let's her companions know what she saw, that the Bayushi seemed particularly smug at Hitoshi's performance. She did so subtlely and begs them not look at the scorpion right away. If necessary, she will tell them one by one, sneaky like.

She also sits with Hitoshi. "This is a challenging event, I'm not sure how I did so well. My ancestors must have intervened, knowing I might tire easily and give up," she jokes. "But I fear that yours want you to work harder, to persevere, and make a big finish. A come from behind tale of glory!"
Jul 8, 2019 12:06 pm
Yoshi - as you approach Mirumoto Hinata you see she is stood next to Kakita Riku and they seem to be making fairly jovial jibes and subtle boasts at one another. As you greet them both and compliment Hinata's performance she smiles and turns slightly from the Crane Bushi "You flatter me Togashi-san but I am sure, Fortunes be willing, that you are correct. I must say congratulations to yourself as well, we both of us will do our Clan proud". Kakita Riku nods slightly to the both of you "I will leave you to to your conversation. Hinata-san, I am sure our....discussion will be settled after tomorrows rounds" and with that she bows slightly and withdraws.
OOC:
I am assuming you would have at least politely acknowledge Kakita Riku when you approach them. Based on your check you get a read that both of them are in fairly good spirits and are beginning to enjoy the evening.
Kashita + Aki - Hitoshi grunts and sighs slightly "It is not the spirits that I am worried about but rather the opinion of certain individuals here". He pauses and takes a drink before continuing "I am not arrogant enough to assume I would be the best at all the events here but I am fairly certain that I did better than I was assessed to have by....some of the judges" as he pauses to take another drink his eyes linger on a section of the wall where the Crane clan mon is displayed.
Jul 8, 2019 12:30 pm
OOC:
Yes, I'd have acknowledge Kakika :)
Yoshi bows back at Kakita and then continues with Hinata "You both seem to be enjoying the evening. Were you making a bet for the rounds tomorrow?"
OOC:
I could just go around and check Jun and the other, but there is particular reason to do so at the moment, so I'll stay here for a while
Jul 9, 2019 9:18 am
Yoshi - Hinata blinks in surprise at the question "No, nothing like that. She was merely trying to extol the virtue of her school over mine" she smiles slightly "I was of course returning the favor. I suppose tomorrow will give us both further opportunity to make our case". As the Bushi is talking you cast your eyes about the room. Most of the other samurai who accompanied you all here have since departed leaving just you, the other competitors, and a handful of attendants at the sake house. You can see Aki and Kashita talking quietly with Hitoshi, Moto Batbayar and the usually stony faced Shiba Toya are trying to get everyone to join them in song and Yasuki Jun is begining a game of Fortunes & Winds (a popular dice game).
Jul 9, 2019 10:19 am
Aki thinks for a moment. She was too caught up in her own performance to pay attention to Hitoshi during the tournament. Maybe Yoshi did. She will have to ask him.
"Is there any reason that the judges might have been evaluating your performance more harshly?", she asks. She is not comfortable with accusing any of them of manipulating the results but she also has trouble believing that Hitoshi really did this badly.
Jul 9, 2019 12:01 pm
Aki and Kashita - Hitoshi sighs and shakes his head "I am not sure why. I was invited to the tournament after all, perhaps the c....certain of the judges do not approve of my selection". He pauses for a moment and shakes his head "I was hoping that my inclusion here would be good for my family and the Mantis. I worry that my failure would be used against my clan for some reason. I would do whatever I had to to avoid my failure reflecting badly on my clan" as he finishes speaking he looks quite grave.
OOC:
If you want to check what your character recalls about the selection process for the tournament you can make a TN 1 Government(Earth) check
Jul 9, 2019 12:03 pm
OOC:
I'll roll, in case Aki mentions something later ;)

success with strife 2x
opportunity with strife 1x...

not very happy about the extra strife.... If anyone mentions it... I'll take 2 strife and use the opportunity to determine why would a minor clan such as the mantis be even invited

Rolls

TN 1 Government(Earth) check - (3d3)

(223) = 7

oops - (3d6)

(442) = 10

Your revelry is interrupted by the arrival of a group of poorly 7 dressed ruffians with swords, ronin no doubt. These masterless samurai demand wine, and as they rudely take their seats, they look around the room and begin laughing among themselves. You hear one quite loudly say "What a motley assortment. These must be the ugly children, the ones the clans marry away as soon as they can." which triggers a fresh round of laughter from the ronin. The other contestants seem stuck between surprised and a growing disapproval at the interruption.
Jul 12, 2019 1:07 pm
Yoshi approaches the inn owner (or any servant) to gather more information on these ronin. "Are these samurai frequent customers of this fine establishment?" he asks.
Jul 12, 2019 1:24 pm
Aki listens to Hitoshi and finds herself believing the accusation that is hidden in his words. His inclusion in the tournament and the way he is being judged might have been a plot against his clan.
She knows, however, that she can be hotheaded and is prone to jump to conclusions prematurely. Therefore, she decides not to show her feelings at this point. She also doesn't want to just dismiss Hitoshi's claims. She opens her mouth to reply to him when the ronin enter and draw her attention away from the mantis.
She stands up, ready to confront them when, again, she stops herself from overreacting. She takes a deep breath and looks through the room. She notices Yoshi, who has his eyes on the ronin as he's talking to a servant.
Aki turns back to Hitoshi and says: "We will continue this conversation later." She then, deliberately calmly, walks over to Yoshi to listen in on his conversation.
OOC:
One success on my roll for the selection process

Rolls

Government 0, Earth 1 - (1D6)

(5) = 5

Jul 12, 2019 2:03 pm
Aki - You think about what you know of the championship and you recall that the selection of the competitors is the responsibility of the previous years champion and runner up, in this case that would mean that either Kitsuki Yuikimi or Bayushi Suga had selected Hitoshi to compete.

Yoshi - before the inn keeper can respond one of the ronin shouts across the room "Hey! You should serve a samurai before him....what are those? Tatoos? Are you come sort of criminal boy?". The inn keeper bows and apologizes before rushing off to get the ronin some sake and you are left with the sting of their insults and the ronins redoubled laughter in your ears.
OOC:
Yoshi will take a point of Strain from the insult. If Yoshi does not respond to the insult they will loose a point of Glory (your choice whether to or not)
Jul 12, 2019 2:18 pm
Yoshi looks at the insulting samurai and approaches him slowly. The monk calmly responds "My good sir, these are the tattoos of the Kami Togashi. May I know your name? I see you are a samurai" Yoshi bows appropriately and adds "though one without a master I believe."
OOC:
This is meant to be an insult back at him... should I roll something like courtesy fire?

If this is how you nicely insult people, then I'll take the two successes (5 and 6) and use the opportunity to remove the strife won. I ignore the 4.

Rolls

social:0 fire:2 (maybe?) - (2d6)

(56) = 11

exploding - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Jul 17, 2019 1:17 pm
Yoshi - The person you assume is the leader of the Ronin stands and moves to face you "I do not need to give my name to you 'boy'. Perhaps when you have grown a little you will learn how to speak to your betters, why don't you run along before you are made to leave"

As the rest of you see this happening you can see a couple of the other Ronin approaching where Hitoshi is seated and start harassing him. "It is growing late, shouldn't you return to your rice fields?" one of them asks him and you see Hitoshi's expression darken in response.
Jul 17, 2019 1:52 pm
Aki steps up to the Ronin that are harassing Hitoshi. She knows she should probably stay out of it but she won't. Sometimes, she just can't stop herself.
"You are looking for rice? If you are hungry and can't afford anything to eat, there are better ways to go about it than this. I will gladly buy you some food if you are in need."
OOC:
Aki is trying to ridicule them without being openly insulting. Looking at my skills and approaches, I think Air+Courtesy makes sense for what I'm attempting. I will roll that and see what I get
OOC:
Edit: Taking the Exploding Success with Strife and rolling one more die
Edit 2: I have one success, one strife and one opportunity. Not sure what to spend the opportunity on. I think if it's a failure, I would like to spend it to suffer no embarrassment or shame for failing if that's applicable here and if it was a success, I'll just recover one Strife with it.

Rolls

Two Air, one Courtesy - (2D6, 1D12)

2D6 : (26) = 8

1D12 : (2) = 2

Explosion - (1D6)

(2) = 2

Jul 17, 2019 2:00 pm
Yoshi will help Aki's by making a quick remark that Hitoshi does not come from the rice field, but from the open seas. He moves closer to the leader and continues "Well, maybe you'd be open to serve this like a civilized person, between you and me?"
OOC:
Void 2 courtesy 0 to add to Aki's comment. void because it is an enlightening comment I presume :D

I take the two explosions, use the opportunities to cancel the strife and get 2 successes

Kashita watches the uncouth ronin with guarded amusement. She picks which one of the accomplices she'll need to escort from the area of a duel should break out.
Jul 18, 2019 8:44 am
Aki - Hitoshi seems to relax a hair at your intervention as the ronin turns there attention on you. "Are you saying we look like beggars? You should watch your tongue, perhaps your invisible friends would be able to better advise you on manners than your teachers"

Yoshi - the figure makes an exaggerated gasp, obviously mocking you, before reaching to pat you on the head "I am sorry boy, I do not find it fair to beat up children. Perhaps you should return to your wet nurse" he says with a chuckle.

Kashita - one of the ronin sees you watching and turns on you "Do you find something amusing here Unicorn? Please do not hold your tongue" as they say that one of their companions shouts across to them "You need to speak more clearly, gaijin like that one have trouble understanding a civilized tongue". This garners laughter all round and you see Moto Batbayar's face darken as she takes a step towards the ronin.

Aki and Yoshi - your efforts to subtly insult the Ronin do not seem to be having any impact, you get the impression they are not inclined to adhere to any of the normal social 'rules'
OOC:
You will all take another point of Strife from the insults and if you do not respond you will lose a point of Glory (no one has lost any glory so far). Whilst the rolls you are making would help in a normal social encounter these Ronin are not reacting to such civilized interactions as you'd normally expect
