Oh I do hate to interrupt all these musings on trade deals. But our poor waiter here has cut his hand. I am sure he is being careful but I must insist on someone serves us. she says with a shock and concern in her voice playing her I am just a pampered noble card.

As she looks at the waiter remembering his face she says to him, Good help is hard to find so do please get that looked at right away. I am sure your employer will understand but I must insist.

After he leaves she whispers to her brother in draconic, Spy

Theobold nods at Tamara before standing briskly.
My apologies, Lord Exadius, but I cannot stand idly by while the help exsanguinates in my presence.
Theo strides purposefully towards the waiter who cut his finger and grabs his wrist, unwrapping the napkin from the wounded hand. With quick and precise movements, Theo dresses the wound, wraps it in gauze from his healer's kit, and binds it in a bandage.
Theo hands the waiter a gold piece and says, loud enough for everyone to hear, A bleeding wound while preparing and handling food is deeply unsanitary. How do you think it will go for you if you make all the assembled lords and ladies here sick? I insist that you take the rest of the evening off to convalesce and I will brook no argument. Off you go!

OOC:
Erasma doesn't know thieves cant, but she does know undercommon.
After another sip of wine, Erasma, seeing that the waiter is being taken care of, addresses Bradley's proposal. "I am unsure as to exactly how the Academy will feel about magical research being conducted away from their watchful eyes, but I cannot imagine they will be for it. My father included."
Jul 20, 2019 2:19 pm
Looks of discomfort appear on the faces of the Lords as Theobold uncover the bleeding cut, turning into straight disgust when he starts to describe the contamination of their food. The suspicious waiter is driven away in shame and, with a last look at the assembly, leaves the room through the back door.

Erasma's follow up to Bradley's question comes at the right time to focus everyone back on tonight's matter before you lose a good hour in digressions and other gossip. Seeing that he isn't back on topic fast enough, it is Lord Huston who addresses Lady Cane's question. You can tell that he's not very comfortable taking the lead like that and would rather stay passive, noding in approval or groaning when he doesn't.
The project isn't to contuct magical research on our own! We don't have the ressources or... skills to do so. I believe what Lord Exadius talked about was the funding of a new commercial route between our long time friends from the north and the advanced Sword Coast. To trade ore, and only ore for now... Isn't it, Bradley?
Few address Lord Exadius by his first name. Theobold, you know that they often work together but none of you is sure if he's going too far in doing what he just did or not. He's always been a little socially awkward...
Jul 21, 2019 3:42 pm
Theobold takes his seat again with a look of mild exasperation. Lord Exadius... Theobold shoots a look toward Lord Huston, ...or, Bradley now, is it? Do you truly mean to take raw ore, a product that is mostly worthless rock, away from the Sword Coast, a place that has an extensive capacity for refining ore, and spend good money transporting it to Vikaastea, a place that does not? Your refinement costs would be astronomical here, and most of your transportation costs would be going into moving around worthless rock instead of the pure metal that you really want. Unless you plan to build the refinement facilities here and hire the appropriate tradesmen yourself, at great cost since it's so rare a skill here, then I cannot envision how this will be remotely cost effective.

"I believe Bradley intends to have the Dwarves do the refining for him." Erasma explains to Theobold, though she turns her attention back to Lord Bradley. "Though I would advise against this as well. If the ore must be refined for it to be useful, at least in the terms we are speaking of, who is to say they will know how to treat it so that it is still of use when it is purchased? And if it doesn't, who would you even be selling it too? The Academy is very strict, as I've mentioned, and I can assure you, they already have their own supplier for such resources."
Erasma leans on her elbows towards Bradley, her eyes intense. "You're an intelligent man, Bradley. I refuse to believe you haven't thought these things through... what are your plans for this ore?"

I am always amazed to witness the incredible speed at which Loard Chalmer's mind goes throws the moneylender lord as he joins back the conversation. Lord Huston would be a terrible spokesman, but what he said was all true. And yet, the smallest misunderstanding can lead to formidable errors when you think that far and fast. Still, you got most of the plan right. The repetitive usage of "lord" denominations settles the issue of calling each others by first names, as Bradley Exadius empties his glass (but doesn't refill it) before he continues.
My business plan is to move worthless rock - a merchandise than shouldn't suffer many attacks - from a place that excels at extracting it to another place that needs it direly. So taking the Dwarven ore to the Sword Coast he slowly spells out to be certain that everyone got it right this time.

It is almost risk free, I can assure you. I do not owe my success to reckless investments.
The problem being that it will mobilize most of my funds to set the route up without bringing any direct activity to Vikaastea.

Erasma steeples her fingers and thinks for a moment. "Why would anyone on the Sword Coast buy ore from here? They have no shortage of mountains or Dwarven mines. If there is nothing special about this ore that no one would want to steal it, why would they want to buy it when you would have to raise prices just to get it out there? If there is a way to profit from this, I fail to see it." She says.
So far, Erasma had nothing to lose. She hadn't pledged anything to this venture, and she did not care if Lord Bradley squandered his riches on fruitless ventures. But be damned if she would let him drag these other Lords down with him if he didn't have a solid plan.

Tamara thinks over the idea and then asks,"Since it seems you will have a cashflow problem you need some investors in this. I also wonder once this is set up do you think since this operation will not cause undo attention that once in a while a small but valuable product could be hidden within it to increase some profits.
Jul 29, 2019 3:58 pm
Raising money issues on they part may have been a mistake, or maybe a clever manipulation from Tamara's part. A cashflow prolbem, ME?! spits Lord Exadius as he chokes on his chunk of meat. The Hourse of Exadius don't have cashflow problems. And I never mentioned calling for investors, as we don't need them. We have all the gold we need to support such a project.
Realizing that raising his voice won't get him what he wants, Lords Exadius stops briefly to regain composure and continue, something that Tamara and Erasma don't fail to notice.
As I started to explain, I'm in need of supporters to help that project get the approval of The Flaming Tree Trading Consortium during the upcoming winter meeting. I don't like to battle with assemblies, and supporters help dismissing unfounded fears. And I also need contacts to hasten the initial process so that the trade route starts to bring money back earlier.

Going back to Theobold and Erasma's concerns, he finally proceeds to ease your concerns. Accessibility of said ore. That is what makes my project viable. As it is for adamantine, the problem with that Enchanting Ore isn't it's existence but its accessibility. It appears that reaching it is a challenging venture, and our northern friends are lucky to have stumbled on a rather large source of that ore.
But refining it is a pretty complicated process, one that few outside of the Sword Coast master. And while the transformed material is a quite powerful component, the raw one is as useful as damned rock. The only way to make business of that ore from a realm as distant as ours is to be a trusted supplier with regular delivery. Since the fall of Luskan, the mines in The Spine of the World have stopped being exploited and Waterdeep is currently running on smaller mines and stocks. Mostly stocks, which are running low. My contacts assure me that they'd put gold on the table for a stable, if not abundant, supplying of Ore.

Satisfied with his arguments, he confidently leave some room for you to answer.

Erasma hides a smile behind her wine glass, enjoying the sight of Lord Bradley so flustered.
"Now that..." she says. "Sounds more like what I expected of you, Lord Exadius. Adamantine is a very worthwhile resource. One that I could get behind. If this enchanting ore is anywhere near as valuable as that, I can begin to see its value." She leans back in her chair a bit, "But what would we gain from supporting your venture?"

Tamara looks over at Erasma and says sweetly, "Well he doesn't want investors though he admits it will tie up his funds, you know if someone makes a move against him when he has all that money tied up, he may not have enough to fend of a financial attack if someone from the trade consortium especially if he makes some enemies putting this through. He is also needs the dwarves to be a part of this and, we also don't know what he is moving besides an ore that is not valued enough to warrant a safety concern until it gets into the right hands but he wants our support to move it through. So he is asking for our support

She turns her head at Lord Bradley and says,I am of course paraphrasing a bit but then my brother is really the one who likes hard facts, that is just the person he is. I am just making sure I understand the situation and the risks involved as I am just a lady in the house but my father always likes to hear what I have to say.

OOC:
While still somewhere around, Ferdy seem to be unable to post at the moment due to IRL events. He'll support you passively for now, and we'll adjust of Ferdy tells me that he won't be able to make it back to GP. Are you OK with that?

I concur on the fact that IRL makes slow games like PbP a real challenge :/
The processed product is a lot more valuable than mere Adamantine. But due to the secrecy of the refining process, we cannot produce and sell it in its refined form. Which is fine to me, because then we'll just be transporting expensive rocks that are not really worth the trouble of attacking the caravan.

After Tamara's comments Lord Exadius continues, visibly doing his best to not respond the provocation: Some of your points are... true, if not shot in an elegant fashion. Yes, I must admit that setting that trade route up is a pretty heavy investment, even for the Exadius family.
Aug 15, 2019 1:49 pm
"There is still a price for supporting voices, Lord Exadius. Especially ones of our caliber." Erasma explains. "The Academy will fight against you, rest assured, and without support, the Consortium will not defend you. Now, the Chalmer family has quite a bit of pull with the Consortium, and if I voice my approval, my father will likely try to sway the Academy, if only to save face..." she says with a slight grimace.
"What do we stand to gain for lending our voices in your favor?"

Lord Bradley's frowns and mutters unintelligible things in this beard, visibly thoughtful, but Lord Huston is the first on the speak up.
[ +- ] Tamara

Now, that is a pretty... calculating way to address Lord Bradley's request for support! You should consider yourselves lucky to be granted the privileged of getting a chance to
Enough of that, Ulrik! this is the first time Lord Cobhall gets involved in the discussion. He's a discreet man, rarely speaking up but observing what's going on with attention. You're making a fool of yourself, and I won't let you work against our common interests. You know very well, as we all do, that no one would take such position if they didn't get something out of it. Lady Crane here simply has an... unusually straightforward way to get to this point.
Aug 24, 2019 9:15 pm
"Thank you, Lord Cobhall." Erasma says with a smirk. "I simply don't see the point in skirting around the obvious questions."
Aug 27, 2019 7:56 pm
Tamara chuckle to herself and then adds,"Well we could speak in riddles and innuendo but what happens when this goes to voted on. If we are not aware of the pitfalls that could happen we could look bad which would then cause the vote not if favor and if you withhold crucial details and then we find out something that we cannot support would be bad. I think we are just asking that all the cards be on the table now so when in council chambers where such diplomacy is very much needed and without the right facts a mistake could happen to wreck the whole plan.

Shit has been put together.
I'll remove Ferdy from the game and go fishing for a new player while moving this negotiation forward. A lot still has to happen, let's go!
It is rather fortunate that you too are eager to see where that thing is going. We are short on schedule, and the sooner I know that I can count on your support, the better it'll be. Lord Exadius pushes his empty plate away, cleaning his hands on the tablecloth. He looks quite satiated and half drunk, but not done yet.

Now, I get that you may need to discuss in private about that particular matter. Or maybe I can come with a suggestion for you: how would you feel about having a favorable appraisal of the House Exadius for your next project?
Sep 9, 2019 5:05 pm
"Support for support. That's incredibly diplomatic, Lord Exadius." Erasma says. She's barley touched her food, and doesn't really intend to. Especially after Bradley's... gluttonous display.
What do you think, Tammi? It seems a fair trade. I don't see much risk, and the revenue could be good for the city. Whatever revenue actually makes its way out of his meaty hands, that is. She takes a sip of wine as she sends her thoughts to her companion. I will let you answer, and follow your lead...
