"Indeed, beside Hitoshi's poor scoring, which could very well be real lack of skill, I have found no evidence that his life is in danger"
Oct 18, 2019 2:46 pm
Aki thinks for a moment. "You're right. There was our night time conversation but I don't recall him mentioning anything about mortal danger. He just wanted us to help Hitoshi become a great samurai. Maybe we misinterpreted his intentions. I do not doubt that there is a conspiracy going on against Hitoshi but maybe it is not about killing him but about dishonoring him or at least failing him."
OOC:
Are the final scores already published? Has Hitoshi passed his gempuku?

Well... (this made me review the posts :) )

I want you to ensure Hitoshi, the young Mantis, survives the Topaz Championship. I want to see that he becomes a samurai worthy of his father.
"Even that, I think Hitoshi may have managed to catch up today. Maybe we can see the scores if they are out already?" Yoshi suggests curious about the Mantis outcome

Kashita grumps. "What? I misinterpreted everything? Well for the Kamis' sake, I feel double the fool."

Your conversation is cut short as you reach your lodgings and find a small army of servants rushing about. Each of you are quickly hurried off to your rooms and the servants help to prepare you for the evenings feast. In fairly short order you find yourselves at the local magistrates estate, an elegant home overlooking the village which is currently festooned with lanterns and packed with servants and guests. The house has its doors thrown open to the warm spring evening, transforming its interior into one massive feast hall around a central garden.
A servant bows to you as you enter and escorts you to your seats at a long table set aside for the contestants. At the head of the table is Kakita Toshimoko, flanked on either side by town magistrate Kakita Kaetatsu and the priest from the contest. Kitsuki Yuikimi and Bayushi Sugai sit across from him as honored guests, and each favors you with a glance as you reach your seat—a friendly one from Yuikimi, and a dour glare from Sugai.
Most of your fellow contestants are already here and enjoying the sake as well. Hitoshi, in particular, seems to be muttering darkly into his cup which surprises you all somewhat as his performance at the end of the day has seemed enough to have passed his Gempuku. Infact you are quite pleased to see all of the contestants have passed. Before you get chance to check on the Mantis there is a small ringing of a gong signifying that the guests should begin to present their gifts to their host, Kakita Toshimoko. As tradition dictates the guests of the Dragon clan are expected to present theirs first and after perhaps seeing Yoshi's slight hesitation as consent Mirumoto Hinata moves to present their gift, a book of stories and philosophies of some of the greatest Shinseist thinkers of the Dragon Clan. After the polite series of refusals and repeated offerings Toshimoko accepts the gift and seems to spend a moment reading a note that was slipped inside before smiling slightly and nodding at Hinata in thanks. Most eyes now turn to Yoshi as Hinata regains their seat.
OOC:
You would all know it would be expected to bring a gift for the host and you would have long since selected something you feel is suitable. It is however down to you to describe what gift it is that you have brought.
As you select it you will need to make a check using whatever Ring and Skill you feel best reflects the thinking that went into the decision and the impression you are hoping to make: perhaps Aesthetics (Fire) for a bold, creative choice of fashion, or Commerce (Water) for a desirable commodity to win friendship? Almost any skill and ring can be used as long as you can justify it based on your reason for the gift. One important thing to remember is that in this culture often the most regarded gift would have little monetary value, a fabulous canvas that someone has bought celebrating a Daimiyo's latest victory may not go down as well as another samurai presenting the first sculpture they carved after achieving their gempuku. The base TN needed for the check is 2 but that may be adjusted up or down based on a particularly appropriate or unfortunate choice of gift.

As stated the Dragon are expected to present their gifts first followed by the Crab, Unicorn, Scorpion, Phoenix, Crane, and then Lion.

Yoshi approaches the host, Kakita Toshimoko, bowing respectfully "I thank you ever so much for the honour of joining you tonight. Please accept this humble give as a sign of the Ise Zumi's friendship and respect, honourable Toshimoko-sama.". The monk offers a wooden box with carefully painted "Dragon tattoos". As Kakita opens the box, the monk adds in praise "It is difficult enough to master yourself, let alone others", introducing the presented scrolls, Yoshi's own treaty on the Dragon's clan believes, the Ise Zumi's path for enlightenment and implications of the self improvement on dealing with others and land administration.

A bit unsure what this sort of gift is, but being about self improvement and spiritual thinking, I'd say Theology and fire because it is basically Theorize and create new ideas

Fire: 5: success + 1: blank
Theology: 5: opportunity + 9: success

I can only keep those two successes I guess :(

Sounds good, TN will still be 2 for this. Which dice are you keeping?

When it is the Phoenix' turn, Aki steps up to Kakita Toshimoko. She bows respectfully and says: "Thank you for your invitation. I am honored to be here and so far, this tournament has truly been an enlightening and spiritual experience for me. To thank you, I want to share this with you."
She presents a small book with no visible decorations on the outside. "This book holds a selection of prayers and meditations from various sources. I have been using these in my studies and in preparation for the championship. Though the individual prayers will hardly be new to you, I hope you will see value in this personal selection and arrangement of them as I feel they allow the reader to consider some of them in a new light."
OOC:
I think Theology makes sense here. For the Ring, Fire (Theorize) seems most appropriate, though Air (Analyze) might also work.
I will roll Fire for now but you can decide what you think is more appropriate. I can change my roll.

Edit: I'm choosing the two explosive successes with Strife (11) and reroll both of them. I don't take the 7 but I take the 3. I'll also take the 10.
That leaves me with 3 Successes, 2 Strife and 2 Opportunity.
I will use the Opportunity to cancel out the strife.

Kashita spent a fair amount of time with the lore master of her clan preparing for this. She could find little about the Kashita that didn't seem to her trite and jaded, but eventually had a small painting commissioned.

When it is her turn, bowing properly as she comes forward, she begins, "Toshimoko-sama. My grandmother gave me many gifts in life, and raised me in her manner. Although I balked at many of the studies she presented to me, others I took to heart greatly. She will always shine from my eyes. So too is your honorable academy a reflection of your father's gifts passed to you and used so admirably. In honor of him, I present to you this humble painting of Toshimo-sama. His legend is told even in the north."

She reveals a painting of his father and son (as adults) side by side facing the unknown together.
[ +- ] Paragon of Courtesy
6: Explosive Success & Strife, success
1: rerolled, 2: Opportunity and Strife
3: Opportunity
12: Explosive Success, Success & Strife

Taking the 6, 3, 12 gives: 4 successes, 2 Strife, 1 Opportunity (used to mitigate some strife)

Going to run through this in the order people would have presented their gifts
Yoshi presents their gift and whilst Toshimoko seems a little bemused he says "My thanks, philosophy is not my strongest suit Yoshi-san but I hope to gain some enlightenment from your gift" and he bows in thanks.

Yasuki Jun presents a small cask. From the markings on the side it appears to a cask of Friendly Traveller Sake, widely regarded as one of the best in Rokugan. Toshimoko smiles widely at the gift and seems very grateful for the gift.

Kashita is up next and after the presentation Toshimoko is silent for a long few moments before smiling faintly "Remarkable, you have caught his likeness incredibly well Kashita-san. I know just the place for this to go." he favours you with a slight smile as he bows in thanks.

Moto Batbayar presents a caged songbird that they found in the western lands beyond the boundaries of the empire.

Bayushi Mei Lin presents next. The Scorpion strangely offers up incense and perfumes that are known to come from the Spice Islands of the Mantis. Whilst he politely accepts Toshimoko's face takes a decidedly harder turn at this gift.

Aki then presents her gift and his mood seems to lift somewhat as he accepts the book of prayers. He opens the book seemingly at random and reads a passage to himself and smiles slightly before thanking her.

Shiba Toya presents a poem written in honour of the Grey Crane and is shown to be written in stunning calligraphy.

Kakita Riku presents a broken bokken, which is clearly worthless but makes Toshimoko laugh out loud and smile warmly.

Kitsu Tsubasa presents an elegant jewelled fan that once belonged to one of Toshimoko’s ancestors who married into the Lion Clan.

As the gift giving is taking place Hitoshi's expression gets increasingly darker, the Mantis seems to be getting increasingly annoyed by the proceedings. As the Lion rejoins his seat the servants begin to bring more drinks and the first course of the meal but before they have put more than a few bowls of food onto the table Hitoshi explodes out from his seat! "Enough!" Hitoshi shouts, standing and knocking a jar of rice wine from the hands of a nearby servant. ’’I am not to be ignored, passed over, insulted at every turn! I, too, have a gift for you, Kakita-samal" He points one accusing finger as the hall rings with silence "I challenge you to a duel!". At this the room falls silent and you all see the now familiar ghostly figure of Doji Satsume starting at Hitoshi, you feel you have but a moment to act as Toshimoko seems too stunned to think right at this instance....
OOC:
You all gain 2 Glory from your gifts

Aki is shocked at this sudden development. She had seen that Hitoshi was unhappy with the proceedings but she didn't know it went beyond the regular distaste everyone secretly has for these ceremonies, whether they admit it or not. She did not realize there was more going on that she had been unaware of.

She would not usually get involved. If Hitoshi has a reason for this duel, it is not her place to stop him. But in this moment, she realizes that this is what Doji Satsume tried to prevent by asking them for help. She was about to fail him because she had been too caught up in the tournament to realize what was going on behind the scenes.

Aki is almost certain she is making a mistake by intervening but she has received a task from the spirit of the late champion and she has to try all she can to fulfill it.
Using the moment of confusion and disregarding all protocol, she stands up and walks up to Hitoshi. She puts a hand on his arm. "Are you sure this is wise?", she asks. Then she adds, quieter, so only Hitoshi will hear her: "If you have to do this, I will not attempt to stop you - but know that I have an obligation towards you. I do not know what this is about but if you proceed with this, I will stand with you, regardless of the consequences."
OOC:
Are duels usually fought to the death? Aki will assume that this one will end in Hitoshi's death either way but it would be good to know what the publically expected outcome of the duel would be.
Oct 24, 2019 2:11 pm
Kashita thinks hard and fast, shocked by the outburst. Not only was it unseemly, no matter how just, but she should have seen it coming. A duel isn't always with a blade, the challenged can select the duel type, can't they? But how do I communicate that to Kakita-sama? And why would he accept? He runs a duelling school! No, this is all wrong, it has to be the katana. The best we can hope for is first blood.

Kakita offers in a moderately loud voice, "Hitoshi-san, you are undeniably brave, but Kakita-sama is a peerless master of Iajutsu. Please settle for first blood, I beg of you!"
Oct 24, 2019 2:23 pm
OOC:
Kakita-sama is the brother of the ghost?
Found it!: It appears to be addressed to the writer’s brother-in-law, Kakita Toshimoko.
Yoshi stand up and speaks with a tranquil voice. "Master Toshimoko-sama, this is an unexpected turn of events. I understand honour demands you accept but.." the monk looks around, his expression unfathomable. "I would not forgive myself if your generous hospitality was to be spoiled by the spur of the moment. We must keep our composure". After a deep breath, Yoshi concludes "I ask respectfully if you'd allow me the honor of taking the challenge in your stead. I find no reason for your grace to be bothered by this". Yoshi look at Aki and Otaku, and then at the ghostly figure of Doji Satsume, before facing Hitoshi.

"This way I can keep both Toshimoko-sama and Satsume-sama happy by guaranteeing Hitosh's safety while keeping the host's honor intact." Yoshi thinks as he waits for the Kakita's reply.
OOC:
Not sure if a roll is required. If it is, I think courtesy may be suitable: 3 plain successes

Duels to the death are fairly rare to be honest. For minor slights or insults, perceived or otherwise, a duel would normally be to first touch or blood. Duels to the death are typically only reserved for the most serious transgressions.

To elaborate, you'd all be aware of the following - the parties involved would be usually expected to agree on the terms of the duel, typically just the objective (to the first strike, to incapacitate, to the death, or another goal) and what weapons and fighting styles are to be used. If they cannot come to terms then it falls to the reigning lord (whichever samurai is present that has the highest Status) to decide, in this case Kakita Toshimoko would have absolute discretion over the terms so it would largely depend on how angry Hitoshi's outburst has made him. Given that none of you have formally achieved your Gempuku as yet (the ceremony will be completed after the duelling competition tomorrow) if he was to accept the duel and declare it was to be to the death, especially considering how much he obviously out matches Hitoshi, even if he were to win the loss of face for effectively slaughtering a child would potentially be so great that he would be expected to take his own life....your assumption would be that it would be incredibly unlikely for Toshimoko to accept an objective more severe than to the first blood.

If the above would change your previous posts at all feel free to amend them.

With the warning they received before the tournament, Aki would still assume Hitoshi's life is in danger, even if she probably would not believe that Kakita would want to kill him so I will keep my post as it is

I think Yoshi would still think this could be what the ghost is referring to and taking it into his own hands would both look good (serving a master by taking on a nuisance task) and keep accidents from happening

The Kakita wouldn't want Yoshi to lose, though. If Yoshi loses the honor duel on Toshimoko's behalf, then the Kakita loses the honor. Has Yoshi proven themselves a sufficiently competent duelist to secure his honor?
