"To boldly go..." We all know the most famous of the starship's slogans. And it's true. Every year, Starfleet personnel carry the Federation's message to new horizons and protect the borders we already have. And they do so boldly, never asking if the code is to great. But... At the end of the day, most of us, me included, get to go back to out comfortable beds. We get to go to a lounge and drink with friends, relax, take a load off.

Well, let me tell you a secret.... Our list doesn't just vanish. Just because we take our eyes if the problems that confine us doesn't mean they end for a few hours. No, we get to rest because of all the ones that don't. The transports, the scouts, the small border patrol that doesn't even have room for a holosuite, more or less an actual, honest-to-God lounge.

Why am I telling you this? Well, there's only so many berths on the Enterprise, and most of those are taken up by temporal studies undergrads now anyway. In other words, you might not get your dream posting, but trust me.

Your post will be important.
-- Excerpt of Admiral Kathryn Janeway's graduation speech from your senior year.
Star Trek: Valiant is the story of a group of graduates who did not, in fact, get their dream postings. the PCs have been assigned to the U.S.S. Valiant, a fleet tender that operates at large and is often a first responder to various issues. Among the problems it handles are infrastructure repair, new construction, medical response, and combat repair.

Here's the thing though. The Valiant has a crew of less than fifty. It's just the PCs, their assistants, and a rotating staff of specialists when they're available. You don't have a glamorous job. The people you help might remember you, or they might remember Starfleet in general, and that's just the way it is. Someday you'll get the posting you really want, but until then, this is your life.

The Valiant has a limited crew, namely, one section head, and two assistants. Each section head will be a PC, and overall command rotates depending on the type of job you're on.

Here's what the Valiant needs:
-- Chief Medical Officer
-- Chief Engineer
-- Head Science Officer
-- Operations Officer (communications, helm, etc.)
-- Security Chief (weapons, redshirts, etc.

Here's what I need:
-- A brief description of the character you want to play, why they would have gotten this posting, and what role they'd like.

Why Uncharted Worlds? There's a Star Trek system, isn't there? What's wrong with it? etc.
-- It really boils down to the fact that I can't really learn another system right now, and UW is both familiar and simple. I don't have anything against the official system.

I would love to play in this. I made a character some time ago for a Star Trek Adventures game that I never got to play and that I would love to revive for this.
A joined trill starfleet doctor, which for this would be filling the Chief Medical Officer role on the ship, I guess.

I'll have to dig out and adapt my old character background but an important part of it was that during an internship during the academy time, my character was part in a plague relief effort where she assisted in working on a cure but got infected and almost died herself.
That could be used as a reason for this posting. For her help during the crisis, she got promoted quickly to Chief Medical Officer but the lasting injuries she retained from the infection might be a reason to keep her off one of the major ships and closer to home...

I'm also interested in this game! Right now I have a vague concept in mind of an officer who had trouble picking a specialization at the Academy, switched around a lot, and as a result kind of drifted into the Operations role without having any notable work with which to attain a more desirable posting, thus ending up on the Valiant.

I'm interested if there's still spots. I'd be happy to fill either science or engineering. I don't have uncharted worlds, but I have and have played other pbta games before, would that be enough or is it too different that I'd need to buy the game?

UW uses a share-alike license, which means I can link you to the docs.

In that case if there's a spot I think I'd prefer the engineer if it's available, but I'd be happy to be the scientist too. My concept is a guy whose family were mechanics and he worked for the family business growing up and started a family of his own early in life. His skills were noticed by some Starfleet officer at some point passing thru the area who suggested he should consider joining Starfleet. He took up the offer so joined Starfleet a bit later than usual. His family's still a big part of his life (either on board or back home, not sure if Valiant has room for families). His assistants would be: 1) his number one, who was already a good friend from the academy and she is probably even better qualified to be chief, but he was given the job because he's older, at least that's what he suspects. Luckily, she doesn't hold a grudge because they're friends, he gives her a lot of freedom to do her job, and asks for her input whenever he can and gives credit where credit is due. 2) a super annoying know-it-all intern, maybe midway thru the academy, on sort of a practicum. 3) an experimental android, much more primitive than Data, and 4) a holo-assistant, maybe akin to the doctor from voyager, that can't leave main engineering.

Sounds interesting. Looks like you're playing post-Voyager time period-wise?
Mar 20, 2020 1:10 am
Yeah, post any TV shows (but Picard, since it's very tightly-focused) to keep me from having to keep track of canon too closely, and probably just after the Romulan supernova to give a reason why Starfleet is stretched thin.

Cool. I'm interested. I do own UW and Far Beyond Humanity, as well as a bunch of 3rd party products, so no need to send me any docs.

I didn't know there was 3rd-party stuff for UW. Is it all under shareable licenses?
Mar 20, 2020 1:36 am
Yes. It's all from some guy named Malcolm Harbrow. His stuff is on DTRPG.

I'm interested. Can I play a ferengi? I'm not too picky when it comes to roles, although i'll take security since it plays against type. I don't think its a strectch to say he got a less than desirable posting because his ferengi tendencies for "bartering" (read; swindling) didn't make a good impression at starfleet.

I've got 5 spots. So far, I've got 4 descriptions submitted, so I'm going to go ahead and accept those.

bowlofspinach (medical)
Kaigen (operations)
Chalrytharendir (engineering)
optimumsquare (security)

That leaves science officer open.

D'oh!

I was working on an engineer, but it's fine, I can remake my character as a science officer instead. With what I had in mind, it'll be fun to play against type...

A klingon science officer sounds fun. Invite sent. And we're full there.

Again, I'm not married to any position, so if someone really wants to be security, I'm not going to complain

I'm tentatively interested. What is Uncharterd Worlds?

GigglyChronos says:

A PbtA system which helps you play sci-fi and space opera games.
