Episode 1: Worth a DeUCE.

The planet Xandria has recently recovered from a civil war between followers of the Wave and the more ascetic monks of the Order of Saint Sagan, who have regained control.

A rare and venerated datacache dating from the time of Old Earth has been recovered from the ruins of the Central Library in the capitol city of Codex, and is due to be transferred to a secure facility in the city of Vellum while the main building is restored.

The Nomads have arrived on scene to be greeted by Dayle Burroughs (Actress: Danielle Panabaker), on behalf of the Head Librarian. Burroughs is tasked with escorting the tomes to the storage site safely. The Lance's job is pure escort security, since travel is currently restricted and the DMZ of Codex is still a dangerous place with sporadic fighting and violent crime more the rule than the official fiction of restored order.

"Hi! You must be the Lance we hired. I'm Archivist Burroughs. Since air travel outside the port still isn't safe, we'll be going by foot past the contested zones until we get to the central housing for Library ground vehicles."

She signs the Lance in, inviting them to get a beverage or snacks from the aid station the facility personnel are using while she retrieves the package.

(I'll let you roleplay a bit, get used to your characters and each other. :) )

Spanner looks out from a window of the Personnel Facility at the ruins of the great Library, sipping a coffee.

"Data from Old Earth... I'll be damned," he says out loud. "Hope there's some engineering blueprints, in there." Although he prides himself on having a rational mind, he cannot help but feeling a little tingle at the mention of the Home Planet of the human race, his own.

"And a better recipe for coffee-making..." he adds as an afterthought, eyeing suspiciously the black substance in his cup.

He has the tell-tale stocky and solid appearance of someone born on a high gravity planet (a HiGee), at odds with his high pitched voice.

"Coffee? It needs to have a decent recipe for honey. These snacks taste like dust."

For Jilick this seems a pointless task. Old data from an old world has no place in this age. But he is good at following orders, so he'll make sure the transfer is done well. He cleans his antenna and takes another sniff at the sour snacks.

To Afinlo, on the other hand, they might as well be carrying holy text.

"I can't believe that this managed to elude even the Gentians!", he proclaims loudly, to anyone who will listen (Everyone on the ship has heard it by now)
Jul 24, 2020 9:05 pm
He turns from the window, grinning.
"What our employers don't realize is that they'll need a second escort to stop Afinlo from getting into that datacache! "
Jul 24, 2020 11:09 pm
"They surely won't mind if I have a peek..."
Jul 25, 2020 9:19 am
Del walks up to the aid station, his warling, Terror, follows close behind. He rummages through the snacks, dissatisfied with the selection, he starts smoking his electric cigar, the tip glows red as he inhales the smoke. "Let's not get ourselves distracted," Del says exhaling the smoke, "Focus on the job first, you can do whatever you want after we get our credits." He approaches the window producing heavy clang with each step. He looks thoughtfully on the streets below.
Jul 25, 2020 12:27 pm
Looks nervously at the Warling. "you sure that puppy won't bite, huh?" he asks for maybe the twentieth time.
Jul 25, 2020 1:48 pm
"Why are you so concerned with his bite? He only has three rows of teeth," Del says with a puzzled look on his face, "And don't be so nervous, he might consider you a prey and I wouldn't recommend that." he says with a grin.

He looks at Terror and commands, "Sit!". Terror sits and looks at Spanner with its milky eyes. "As long as you don't get between him and his food you should be fine," Del says reassuringly.

Jilick gives the Del and his animal a wide berth and starts working his deck, "Atmosphere is within normal parametres. Refugees reporting in west of here, seems another group of Wave supporters just gave up. Never understand why you humanoids spend so much time fighting. This place is a real mess."
Jul 25, 2020 6:45 pm
"We are very competitive," Del answers Jilick's rhetorical question, "We need to plot our route to the vehicles, and a couple of back up routes just in case there will be trouble"

Jilick will call up a map of the locations for collection and drop off, checking the routes between them against the database of fire fights, protests, militia action, refugees, demolitions, etc. He’ll announce his findings to the group
Jul 26, 2020 8:10 am
"Drink what they have, you never know when you won't get another." He says with droopy but watchful eyes, his rifle hanging from his hand, while he gets a cup. He puts himself beside Del and his pet without excess concern. "Make sure to eat too. Just in case."
Jul 26, 2020 10:46 am
Not too long goes by waiting before the Archivist returns. She is obviously upset. "Nomads, could you, um, please join me in the Head Librarian's office? There's been a... um... small..." she pauses, her face screwing up into a pained expression. "Complication." She quickly turns and leads the way.
Head Librarian Rafael Ordenã (Actor: Demián Bichir) is seated at his desk in a small room made up as a private office. You can still see the signs that this was once a janitor's storage room. He looks gravely concerned. "Lancers. We have a small... complication."

Burroughs nervously adds, "I said that." then wilts under his steady gaze.

"The Terra Cache and several other items are missing. The storage vault was forced. They have been stolen. I can offer you an authorized Silver Contract upgrade with a bonus for recovering a particular book..." He pauses, steepling his fingers in front of him. "Yes, actual printed book from the early 22nd century, meticulously preserved, and of utmost rarity and importance."

He holds out a tablet. "Please indicate acceptance if you will take this Contract. There will likely be conflict and possibly heavy combat. But from what I have heard, none of you are strangers to this."

He awaits your response.
Jul 26, 2020 12:21 pm
"There is always ... a complication, isn't it?" Del chuckles, "What you, guys, think? I need credits, so I am willing to get into this mess."
Jul 26, 2020 1:23 pm
He scratches his chin, then shrugs.
"Well... That shiny Fugue of ours won't pay for itself, will it? I say let's do this."
Jul 26, 2020 9:55 pm
"Hhmm, personally I think we should wait until we have analysed more data before committing to this. But I agree with Wright and Gravius, we do need the money, so I will agree."
Jul 26, 2020 11:15 pm
"I'm always in when it comes to recovering stolen data"
Jul 27, 2020 11:34 am
Looks at Jillick, whispers: "it's Spanner, not Wright. Otherwise I'd have to also use your surname, and my tongue would get all knotted." He winks at the insectoid.
Jul 27, 2020 9:41 pm
He looks at Spanner, "Sorry boss."
Jul 29, 2020 2:27 am
"I think this should be a mutual decision, but I'd support it. Sometimes we got to do what we need too."

He pauses for a moment "Though first, I want to know who knew the material was here Head Librarian?" His eyes narrow looking around the small room then back at the Librarian, trying to read the answer on his face before he speaks.
Jul 29, 2020 2:38 am
The Head Librarian hesitates, then shrugs. "Most of it is the contents of a lost mail carrier pouch that was meant for a colony in the middle expansive period. Dating from the time First Contact was made with the R'thnx. Quite a lot of updates on their culture, biology, history, and religion. That last is important. After the war, information on the faction that caused the conflict was suppressed... including their cult of the Wave."

The Archivist sighs. "It is our great shame. Humanity's first contact with another species was sparked by their assimilationist beliefs.. which we have unsealed to lead to the current troubles here."

The Head Librarian continues, "I was Assistant Head before the conflict here. My superior ordered the materials sealed, then disappeared. The Wave grew here shortly thereafter. I fear that with the material in their hands, they could gain popular support and reignite the coup attempt in earnest."
Jul 30, 2020 12:11 pm
"Well your interest is in retrieving the datacache and the... book, right? Maybe we should start from the forced Storage Vault they were kept in?... Do you want to lead the way?" , Spanner says looking at the Head Librarian and his Archivist.
Jul 30, 2020 10:27 pm
"Sounds like a place to start. Do you think the former head librarian had anything to do with the cult, disappearing after finding information on it, is quite suspicious either they were grabbed, or they're inside if the materials were sealed it might not all have remained there before it got sealed either."
Jul 30, 2020 10:45 pm
"can you tell us more about your predecessor? Their involvement in this matter may be important. Also, how did the movement start? With a single individual or incident?"
Aug 1, 2020 2:18 pm
While the others are talking, Del stands aside with the tablet and reads through the contract, focusing on the exact obectives, limitations, time frame and payment. Terror sits next to him, competely still, like a statue, staring at the Head Librarian.
Aug 3, 2020 9:00 am
"A rather excellent question, Jilick." Gideon says while waiting for the other's decisions. He watches the two casually but not without a sense of wariness.
Aug 4, 2020 12:01 pm
Afinlo is watching the head librarian and archivist carefully as they answer the questions, trying to detect any deception. Finally, he says, quietly and calmly, "were there any cameras near the vault? And who other than us know the cache was here?"
Aug 4, 2020 12:57 pm
The Head Librarian listens to the concerns, each in turn. "Fair questions. Firstly, Yes, there were cameras, and the footage reveals nothing." He taps his desk, transferring the footage for the Lance to study as they will. "The list of people who knew about the cache was restricted to Head Librarian Sorens and myself, Senior Archivist Mandel who is actually on the other side of the planet this week, and Archivist Burroughs."

He brings up some notes on the holodisplay. "The Cult of the Wave was revived one standard year ago tomorrow. It's origins remain a mystery. This is not the first time such a revival has occurred, two other worlds have suffered from it in the past three centuries. It is an insidious and difficult thing, some kind of embedded textual engramattic programming in the language that seems to translate easily into several race's languages." He gestures at Jikick. "All of us here except your Ick Lancer would be affected. Their language protects them."

He brings up a vid from a year ago. On the screen, popular game show "Tetrahedron Of Fortune" is interrupted by a burst of actual static, and replaced with a scrolling message that reads "THE WAVE SPREADS." after several scrolls, a hooded figure in white with a gold sine wave pattern across its full face mask appears. "I am the Reverend Sine. Your suffering has ended. Universal peace will be brought with the cresting of The Wave. Rejoice. We are coming."

The broadcast is briefly resored to the game before the taking news heads break in, at which point Ordenã stops it. "Within a week it was a full on civil war." He sighs. "I myself had suspected that Sorens was involved, but the iconography of the cult is no longer associated with them in the modern mind." He opens the desk drawer. "We found this in a hidden compartment." He puts a small replica ground vehicle on the desk.
[ +- ]
Carefully putting the unbelievably rare and ancient artifact away, he realized the appraising looks around him. "It's a replica, but someone put a lot of love into it." He frowns. "Maybe my old boss himself."

His desk chimes. "Archivist, can you show the Lance to the Vault please? I have to meet with the board of governors shortly."
The Vault is intact.. a hardened room that could withstand anything up (but not including) antimatter weapons. Like many things on the planet, it is tetrahedral, a dodecahedron of semi-inert superdense material 12 meters across each face. It is the only thing standing in the rubble of this wing.

Within, now completely empty, rows and rows of sterile stasis cubes sit idle and depowered.
Aug 5, 2020 12:15 am
"Archivist Burroughs, the Head Librarian said the vault was forced. Can you please show us that, so we may see what was used to force it? Also, where was the Terra Cache stored and what were the other items which were taken with it? Jilick asks, as he pokes around vault looking for any clues.

"Please send that video to us", Afinlo says. Cracking the programming might be valuable for clues. He wondered briefly why the Gentians hadn't heard of the cult of the wave, but reasoned they were likely too small scale.

As he looks around the vault empty containers, Spanner mumbles to his companions, next to him in the search. "Er... Guys? Why do you think the Head Librarian showed us that replica thing? Am I the only one to find that bizarre? I mean, sure, Sorens might have an interest in earth artifacts, but... Stealing the datacache and book? What for? Completing his toy car collection?? " he asks confused.
Aug 5, 2020 1:52 pm
"I don't recognize that vehicle, but something is nagging me, something about the odd attachment in the back, the piece that looks like its store in or attached but is in different colors?" Gideon says. "Does that look like am unfinished jetboard? The kind kids and some adults on a few planets play around on?"
Last edited August 5, 2020 1:52 pm
Aug 7, 2020 7:51 am
"Are any of you familiar with the jetboards, not as common as they used to be and the fin is wrong, no idea if that has any relevance at all, or just a toy from his youth." Gideon looks as the librarian and asks "Can I see that? See if it has a makers mark or is a print?"
Aug 7, 2020 2:43 pm
"Maybe the toy car is a signature, we should check local criminal records, maybe there is a notorious thief working in these parts," Del says as he exhales another puff of smoke.

The Librarian demurs on letting anyone handle the replica, but transfers the video to your archives as he hurries to his meeting.

On the way to the vault, the Archivist answers the question at hand. "Back on Old Earth, in the era just before humanity left the planet for the first time, there was a culture of those who used an early, unpowered variant of the jetboard called a "surf board" to go "surfing"... on waves. When the book first arrived in the Sol System, the original human version of the cult revived their iconography, idiom, and method of dress to represent themselves." She quickly transfers some reference material to the Lance.

At the vault, there is a clear mark of some device that was adhered to the entry panel sensor, but no obvious trace of what it was other than vague outline similar to a pair of VR/AR goggles with an odd protrusion.
[ +- ]
She leads you through to an entirely nondescript storage unit roughly in the middle of the area. "Here we are. The Cache was stored in unit 1963."
Aug 8, 2020 4:31 pm
"That device is strange indeed", Jilick puzzles over it. I wonder if the protrusion is a handle of some type? You didn’t answer my question on what else was taken with the data cache?"
Aug 8, 2020 5:33 pm
Looks puzzled at the goggles print, then asks, "is there a record of the title of this book? Like a shipping manifest?"
He will start examining unit 1963 for markings or other clues.

"Well now I understand the name of the group." He says aloud. "I can't add much to that, Earth history is only marginal in my line of work, but that device used on the vault is interesting," he says while others examine the item. He pauses and thinks.
Aug 12, 2020 6:51 pm
"I think we are focusing on a wrong thing here," Del says putting away his electronic cigar and exhaling last plume of smoke, "As I understand it, the Cache was stolen very recently and the culprtis are likely related to the Wave cult." He pats Terror who is standing close. "I am sure if we look we can find out where the nearest Wave cell is located and go there straight away. Or, we could conact local crime syndicate and ask them about the burglary. I am sure they will be willing to clear their names and help us if we will hold them accountable for the crime even if they didn't commit it."

"Sure, but... how do we go about it? It's not like secret cults and criminal gangs are listed on the 'Planet Xandria Almanac of Illegal Things, Third Edition'..."

He turns to the Archivist who accompanied them to this Vault. "Any suggestions on how to make contact with these groups?"
Aug 16, 2020 6:05 am
"Local law enforcement should have a database containing reports on most of the criminal activities in the region. They should also have reports on latest Wave sightings." Del says nonchalantly.
Aug 16, 2020 7:41 am
"Then we'll check in with them, if they do--problem is with planetary law enforcement, someone might be an insider to the cult." He says dryly with no humor.
Aug 16, 2020 5:31 pm
"I am fine to check with the local law or militia to see what they will tell us", Jilick offers. "But not to happy with approaching a criminal gang. We are a very small group, with very few trained in combat. If we get into trouble there we could get badly hurt. So I urge caution."

While Aflino fascinatedly endeavors to read every label on every cube, the Archivist answers Jilicjk's inquiry. "The cube contained the courtier pouch, its contents including the book and the dedication plaque of the courrier ship Sandpiper. The title of the book was "Catch A Wave: Synergistic Intersections of Philosophy between Brian Wilson and the R'thnx".

After thinking about it, Gideon realizes he has seen something with a similar configuration. They go pearl diving on Noosa, and use underwater gear that is similar, worn on the face with a breathing tube.

Mick manages to find a residue in and around the crates, at first one would think it was normal dust, but a closer look reveals it is a pristine beach sand, of the kind found on Noosa's tourist beaches. And he remembers seeing Noosan cuisine and themed decor in a restaurant on the way to the Central Library.
Aug 17, 2020 5:53 pm
Spanner will share his findings with the group.
"Hey guys, check this out. Sand traces. Heard such pristine sand can only be found on Noosa's beaches.
Hey, wait a minute - I saw a restaurant on the way here. Noosan cuisine and decor. Can't be coincidence..."
Aug 17, 2020 6:44 pm
"So, we might have our first place to visit," Del clasps his hands toghether and turns to the Archivist, "Archivist Burroughs, are there many Noosan restaurants in Codex? Also, could you call your local law enforcement services and notify them about the burglary and that the Lancers are handling it. We will probably also need a liaison from them as well."
Aug 23, 2020 6:19 am
"Part of their symbol looks like pearl divers gear, used on Noosa, which combined with the "Wave" begins to make sense that somehow this is taken from some form of aquatic ideology."
Aug 26, 2020 1:42 am
Jilick looks up the Noosan restaurants on the Net, to see if there is anything detailed about it, or the location it is in. Especially in relation to the uprising.
Aug 26, 2020 5:03 pm
The Archivist nods. "My wife is actually a detective. I'll make sure you get some trustworthy help."

While she sends the message, Jilick comes up with only two Noosan restaurants on Xandria. One in town, the other on the opposite side of the planet in the city of Atheneum.

The Archivist concludes her messaging. "Renata will meet with you when you can arrange a time with her." She transmits a com code to your devices.

Aug 30, 2020 4:04 pm
He nods in greeting at the woman. "Miss Burroughs. Looks like our engagement to escort a datacache from Codex has become a find-the-stolen-goods operation. Our preliminary investigation seems to point to the Wave group, and to a symbolism inspired by an Old Earth subculture celebrating sea, waves and white beaches. It's quite bizarre. Have you encountered similar symbolism before, and is it associated with this Wave group? What can you tell us about them?"
Aug 30, 2020 8:37 pm
"Considering the information we've discovered, we'd like to keep some details close, but we will share what we can. Discovered the Wave used some form of biometric override, on the vault." He pauses and waits for a response.
Aug 31, 2020 3:31 pm
While everyone is asking Detective questions, Del orders restaurant's special for himself and, if possible, a piece of raw meat for Terror.

"I am interested if they were getting help from someone else, who that someone else could be," Del adds to the discussion, "Who could provide the tools for the deed?"
Sep 1, 2020 1:06 am
Jilick listens to the interrogation of the Detective while scanning the other restaurant patrons and staff. He checks for a copy of the image seen in the data vaults as well. Does he notice anyone, or thing, unusual.
Sep 3, 2020 9:48 pm
The detective nods as she eats a bowl of pleasantly fragrant fish and vegetable thick stew. Wiping her lips, she apologies. "Not much time for food on this job. OK."

The waitstaff arrives to clear dishes and bring deserts, smiling as terror worries happily at the bone from his meal. Once settled and alone again, she continues.

"Biometrics and working with the Wave... Sounds like Glynnis Ayamir's outfit. They don't care about working with brainwashed slacker happiness zombies and they have used biohacks before. You can usually find some of her crew skulking about Buckram's alley in the Market district. It was left untouched in the conflict because, well, everyone needs milk. They traffic grey market goods like Quagmeeran hentai."

Her comm beeps in a series of tones. "If you will excuse me. That's my alert, I am needed. Feel free to message me if anything else coms up." She takes her sweet bun with fruit and hurries out, already talking to dispatch.

"So he's headed towards the detective too, hope this is her trap.," he smirks slightly and gets ready just in case things goto the varrothi's.

Mick activates his two helping bots housed in his forearm docking sockets and places them on the ground. Each produces spidery mechanical legs and looks around to scan the environment.
"Left? Right? you boys go and trip that fellow, we want him fallen on the ground," he whispers, entering the right commands and target on his bot interface. The two bots scuttle away silently and stealthily towards the Sandpiper man.

The 'bots trip Sandpiper as he follows his compatriots into the alley. Strangely Burroughs is nowhere to be seen. With Terror instantly going to stand watch at over the fallen one, the other two find themselves boxed in. Panicky, they are obviously not ready to take on a coordinated Lance. The one in blue looks at the one in red, and both nod. In unison they say, "The wave crests." Moments later, foam emerges from their mouths as they fall lifeless to the ground.

From a ledge above, the Detective says, "Not bad. We never got one alive before."

Spanner looks up at the detective as he retrieves his bots, housing them back into their docking on his forearms.
"you mean to tell me that these guys prefer suicide over capture? That's messed up... How did they do that, anyway? A poison capsule in their teeth? Better check our friend, then... "

"We might've caught more of them alive had we known about their suicidal tendencies beforehand," Del says to the Detective.
He purposefully steps on the captured man's hand with his heavy mechanical leg as he kneels down, "I advise against doing anything stupid like trying to kill yourself as it would only help us more than it would you or your cause." Del puts a finger of his mechanical hand into the man's mouth, in case he would try to bite the potential capsule.

"Oh, please I'd prefer not to shoot your teeth out or plant a hole in your trachea to prevent death, it will hurt a terrible amount, but we can keep you alive."

Two hours later. CED temporary Chapterhouse, formerly the Anaphora Hotel.
Burroughs is frustrated. The suspect is docile. Compliant, and remaining utterly silent. Absolutely no trace of toxins found despite a thorough medical exam. As she paces outside the Conference Room 1, which has had a handwritten sign saying "Interrogation 1" taped to it, a uniformed officer brings her a folder. "What the hell."

She gets a bottle from a cleaning supplies cupboard, storms into the room, and squirts it on Sandpiper's arm. The tattoo ink runs and fades to nothing. "OK. Want to tell me what is really going on here?"

He sighs, then shrugs. "Recognition code: Paraprosdok. Chiasmus. Hypophor. DDS 001 point nine."

Burroughs slumps. "You're Accordance Patrol. Of course you are."

He nods. "Major Carl Verran. I was undercover with the Wave, trying to get to Syne. We couldn't risk letting Enforcement know, because very few people are immune. I have a particular genetic mutation that makes it impossible for me to be indoctrinated by exposure."

Her comm beeps. "I'll be back." Verran nods, and says "I was expecting that. Tell your commanding officer I am comfortable and being well treated." He sits at relative ease as she storms past the Lance.

Your comms beep. Incoming message from the Fugue.
