btw, please do not check the reroll aces box when rolling. you do not benefit from the lucky feat.

sorry, I was assuming that was for the "no critical fails" rule. I'll stop.

So, my character is fairly intelligent, I figure that gives me the right to do some online research for various enemy types. And I found details on the mimic. But I can't figure out if it is immune to bludgeoning attacks. The listing only says it's immune to acid. But being amorphous, I question whether it can be cut or bludgeoned, so I'm not sure what attack options are available to me.
Alright, Maggie, we can handle this. Use your flame, and then claw it until your flame recharges, I holler as I scramble to grab a couple of longer bones. These should work to parry any attacks without losing anything important. I can just let go and pick up another...

A monsters stats indicate the immunities and resistances and vulnerability of that monster. It’s mechanic. Interpretation is way out.

On a separate note, I make up the stats. See rule #1. The stats on the internet are merely guidelines. See rule #2. Looking up monster stats at the table is poor form. I guess I should add back the hit points that I lowered on the the monster lol. If you want to investigation or insight on a monster, you should roll skill checks for it. Just sayin.

Ah... Sorry, I'm a real noob at this sort of thing, so I don't know anything about that sort of stuff. I'm realizing that the RPGs I played before are more... action style, not narrative style. I feel like I'm at a bit of a disadvantage versus people who would be able to recognize the signs of particular monsters (such as the trident getting stuck).

I wasn't really looking for stats per se, but just trying to figure out if the monster was at all attackable. I didn't know that I could "roll" skills on stuff like that. So... I'm sorry! I didn't mean to be a bad player. :(

Maybe I need to find a "crash course" in playing D&D specifically, so I don't miss obvious things like this. Cause... man, investigating was exactly what I wanted to do... I just never thought that I could do it as the character.

Again, I'm probably over-explaining. I just feel bad for displaying such bad form at the table. Chalk it up to ignorance, if you will, and I'll move on. And I'll just try to ask more questions about what I can and can't do.

For one thing, I wasn't sure whether or not you would scale the stats of monsters relative to my characters level, or if I ran the risk of dying cause I didn't know enough about a monster to know that I should run instead of fight, etc. I worry too much. I would just hate to get my character killed off before "meeting up" with the party.

Now I'm rambling. Sorry again!

I just realized my tone in the last occ was wrong. I meant to be playful. My apologies. I am just wanting you to have an immersive experience learning the monsters rather than trying to game the system and come out with some correct solution that doesn’t really matter. Failure is funny and more experience than googling

amusing, so long as I don't die, lol. All good. I was just worried that I had offended you by my bad etiquette. I'm really enjoying playing.
Addendum to last action, I study the creature, hoping to figure out the best way to attack it...

Rolls

Insight (still not sure what proficiency means) - (1d20+2)

(12) + 2 = 14

Investigation (no proficiency on this one) - (1d20+2)

(19) + 2 = 21

OOC:
to answer you, I clicked on your character that you posted by and see your Co sea tee sheet. In insight you have no wisdom mod but you do have a +2 for being proficient. The sheet calculates that, similarly On investigation you have a +2 on intelligence but you are NOT proficient in that so no proficiency bonus. You are equally adept at insight and intelligence just because you trained on your weak ability and became proficient. Yes?

OOC:
you gain the proficiency from classes or races or feats etc. remember waaay back to character creation? That’s the bad part about dndbeyond. It didn’t force you to do the math yourself.

You are insightful enough to realize that it takes the mimic 6 sec to transform itself from blob to object to blob and then another round of 6 sec to attack. It is slow.

Through your logical investigation you conclude that it is only sticky when it is an object.

Ah! Okay, that makes sense then. Sorry for being so... annoyingly noob-esque.

Btw, dying is funny. One of the characters has already died. Luckily they had befriended a necromancer...

Just checking, cause a lot of conversation happened in there, but did Maggie try to flame or claw the mimic?
Aug 7, 2020 2:36 am
Not yet. Need to be at a keyboard. Btw, this IS your crash course.

OOC:
Wheeeeeeee!!!!! Just feel free to correct anything I do that is bad etiquette. Also, sorry if it sounded like I was nagging, I just wasn't sure if it was "my turn." Feel free to give me post-epic-fail tips on this crash course. :) And one last question... when the mimic was changing forms, did the trident fall to the ground due to it not being sticky at that point? No rush on that, just a learning lesson.
Aug 7, 2020 1:27 pm
I meant to say that the investigation result was based on the fact the trident fell off when he transformed into a blob. You're so smart Gnarvul.

Hey One. Watch this!, she yells as she flame throws the rope.

Rolls

AoE Dexterity save for rope - (1d20+1)

(1) + 1 = 2

Breathe damage - (2d6)

(63) = 9

Aug 7, 2020 2:02 pm
The rope is stretched tight and cannot dodge Maggie's flame breathe and takes 9 points damage.

You attack with a bone, you barabarian you. You do not have proficiency with an improvised weapon (like a brawler and some monks do) so it is a straight STR mod on attack.

Rolls

Bone attack - (1d20+3)

(6) + 3 = 9

Aug 7, 2020 2:02 pm
You miss!
Aug 7, 2020 2:04 pm
The rope takes on a psuedopod and swings at Maggie.

Rolls

Pod attack - (1d20+5)

(20) + 5 = 25
