Glancing around, I search for a gap in the rocks that could serve as cover. As I do this, I gather up the bear pelt, bags, and what boxes I can carry. I find the best spot I can, one that is moderately deep, but drains out. No need to drown myself! I place what I'm carrying into it, then check the state of the storm. I believe I have the time... I head back over, grab another load of boxes and bags, thankful that my shelter is near enough. Then I gather some larger, flat stones, unfurl the uncured pelt, and use the stones to anchor the pelt as a makeshift tent over my shelter. Making one more quick dash, I run and grab a chunk of the shattered canoe that looks to be just the right size. I return to my makeshift tent, cramped as it may be, and hunker down for the storm.

You have to climb about 40 feet up the rocky craig but find something suitable and you do as you say. As soon as you settle in, you feel the warm air of wide crack in the rock below your tent.

With care, I take a moment to examine the crack, wondering what could explain the oddly warm wind. Could the old, elusive sea dog still be nearby? If only I could recapture that sense of him. How did I do that? Keeping one eye on the crack, and my dagger in hands reach, I begin to examine the spoils of my unsatisfying chase, pondering the strange sense I'd felt when I gave in to my anger and hunted the cursed thief.

Was it anger or desire? There was indeed the possessions of the sea dog as well as a beautifully crafted Cloak of the green folk and some leather armor, mich too small for yourself as the green folk are all slight and slender. Still, they look fine and valuable.

As I organize and pack my new possessions into my pack, I consider the possibilities. What if it was desire? Can I call up this skill intentionally? Perhaps, if I concentrate on him, if I imagine capturing him again... I tie the cured bear skin to my pack, and set it aside, having finished packing up. Carefully, I take a closer look at the wide crack, dagger in hand and (club? I think it's a club, I'm drawing a blank... My two handed weapon) resting in it's usual place, ready for use upon a moments notice. If I've learned anything since leaving home, it's that trust is a currency best held tightly, and spent with great care...

The warm breeze feels good on your cold rain soaked clothes. You hand is steady as you make your way through the sizable crack in the rock. The fissure seems to open out into a larger space beyond. Your ears discern a much large space judging by the echos. However, you can’t see a dang thing.

I return back to my pack, pull out my torch and light it with my tinder box. Carefully propping the torch aside, I put my pack on, grab the torch, and return to the wide crack as before, this time with a torch in one hand, dagger in the other.

You have the look of those old tomb raiders peering into their latest finds, for surely this is some noble or king's tomb built under a cairn of rock above a water dug cavern. You now see where you were standing before as a vent through the roof of this cavern, some forty feet down to the water. The dimensions are about 50 x 80 in more or less a bean shape with stalactites dripping rain water into the pool. On the far side of the pool from you is a stone platform in front of an ornamented jade door. You smell the wet rot of something disagreeable and the tingle on your tongue of something acrid.

Intrigued, I wedge the torch into a cleft in the rock, and get out my rope. I glance around, hoping to find a good anchor point to tie off the rope, thankful that the drop is not greater than it is, lest I not have enough rope to reach.
OOC:
Supposing I do find an appropriate anchor point, I plan to attach the rope and test the stability of the anchor point before proceeding down the rope. I'm also planning on figuring out how to carry a lit torch with my while climbing down the rope, and am wondering if my pack has some sort of feature that might enable that, or if the torch is of a size that I could bit down on the narrow end and carry it in my mouth (without cooking my face).

I'm sure Gnarvul can figure it out...
You climb down to the water. It is cold and salty, deep without any purchase. You are still 30' from the stone platform just above the waterline. There is a gentle swaying of the water as would be in a fishbowl.

Here I go rushing into things again... I shake my head at myself, and climb a few feet back up the rope, getting about 10' clear of the water. I then grope around till I find a loose rock, turn around and throw it out into the middle of the water. If I've learned anything, it's that I should expect things to be different than I might expect. Such as a leisurely swim across a calm water...

I do believe someone is learning to play dnd
Where the rock hits the smooth surface of the pool, the water boils with activity as thousands of tiny teeth snap at the air and send the water into frothing. After a few second of gnashing teeth, the water calms, ready for that swim.

Ah... lessons learned. I wonder... I survey the walls of the cavern, looking to find if there is a route by which I could traverse the chamber by climbing across the wall. Then I climb back up the rope to my covered cavity, and extinguish the torch. I'm a little weary from that sudden hunt, such a strenuous activity in this state would probably not be advisable. Time for a quick meal of cold, roasted fish, and then a nice short rest. Perhaps I'll climb back down later, and see about climbing around the cavern walls. Unsurprisingly, I do just as I say.
OOC:
At least, up unto the point where I decide about climbing back down, as I imagine you'll provide some input on the raggedness of the walls of the cavern and whether there is much chance of climbing across them.

OOC:
I'm not sure exactly how much narrative I should provide, especially given my lack of knowledge of the terrain or specifics that I might take advantage of. For instance, should I have stated that I observed a significantly craggy wall that provided plenty of grips and foothold options along the wall around the cavern, and that after the rest, I went back down and traversed it, taking care to test each foothold and grip as I went, etc, etc?

I don't want to narrate too far, and contradict the state of play as you imagine it to be, and thus provide invalid narrative (much as I did, to some degree, with the bear encounter).

Or is it perhaps better to ask questions OOC, to determine the details prior to choosing my actions. Such as, should I have asked how far away the bear was? I wasn't sure I wanted to break up the narrative with too much OOC talk.

Also, thanks for the gentle nudge with the fishbowl comment...

Ha! Don't expect that kind of hint too often. It was a pretty easy hint. I did add it after the fact, just to see if you were reading my descriptions, lol. You are getting a true, real time education in basic dnd tropes. There is one player I have been playing with for 40 years now. Another with almost as much experience, but they will forget the details. We have a newbie in addition to you two. I am giving the three guys a run for their money on these stories as yall are all about the same activity. I have a bit of back story to do with the last player, since we switched classes a couple of times, though they are in the path of the hurricane and may loose power or something so I don't know how fast I can get them there. I do need to know for scheduling purposes from Antethoe. Its almost two weeks of non activity and though I will have her as much or little as she can, I need to know if this non-play is unusual or usual or erratic. I really do need to pull the story for yall together. Shall I make her a come and go character and go ahead and start all y'all? Though I have to say, I have enjoyed stalling with the 1 on 1. I have a sea coast adventure, a desert adventure, a high seas adventure, a jungle adventure and a mountain adventure all playing at the same time (and sometimes overlapping and interacting) But the interplay of the party players is so much more thrilling (and safer, which means I can throw more terrible monsters). Also, I would be working less!

OOC:
You will find your level of detail when you get together as a group. Don't forget that you are driving the story. Things like inventing Farwalker to talk to, or skinning the bear and creating an asset to be lost or stolen, or chasing the villian when all hope is lost are essential. I didn't write any of that. Those are the kind of things you may feel free to write, conjure, dream up. You ARE the hero. I just write to make them look good. Kinda like ballroom dancing. I lead so the girl looks pretty. She dances well, so I look good at leading.

Refreshed from the meal, yo once again look at the chamber by torchlight. The light reflects in the calm water and reflects on all the stalactites. You rope still suspends 30 feet down and 10 feet above the water, 30 feet from the stone ledge. There are no other ledges.

I really have no idea what you should do, but I'm sure it will be a splash blast!!

I jamb the torch into a crevice in the wall again, then walk back into the upper cavity. I stick my head out and glance around. Looks like the storm will last a while longer. Well, I might as well try a little practice with my summoning... Wonder what those fishies will make of a magma mephit. I grab two loose stones on the way back to the lip of the ledge, where I set the stones down. I sit on the edge, with my feet dangling over the impassible waters filled with so many small and hungry fish. Wonder if they are cannabalistic fish... I ponder as I rub my hands together, generating some warmth. With a quick motion, I grab the two stones, one in each hand. I toss out the first, and then quickly speak the one word in the old tongue, before tossing it after the other. I hope there's enough time for the mephit to spawn before it hits the water... I wouldn't want it to sink completely into the depths. But it might be funny to see what happens to the fish if they try to take a bite out of magma...
