Chapter 1: Into The Mists

Aug 3, 2020 7:51 am
It's been a miserable rainy day for travelling. Ever since you started your various journeys this morning it's been unseasonably cold, steel grey clouds have been covering the sky with steady rain falling upon you, a stiff wind whirling it into your faces and a fog has been growing throughout, obscuring your vision to the point where you can now only see a few hundred feet ahead of you. There's been no reprieve the whole day and your moods are darkened accordingly. You're not even sure where you are exactly anymore, you've been travelling so much lately that the dark woods and the marshy land is starting to look the same.

Finally around noon, with your spirits at an all-time low, you see your salvation from the elements as a tavern appears ahead. It's a small, modest, slightly crooked stone structure with a small wooden sign hanging above the door. As you get closer you see a drawing of a noose and the name "The Hangman" underneath it.

You step inside and the atmosphere is much warmer than you anticipated. It's surprisingly full with locals chatting and laughing together. A fire blazes in the hearth and starts to warm you up as soon as you step inside. A rotund bartender looks up and smiles as you enter.
OOC:
Let's get started. Please introduce yourselves as you enter the tavern

Looking up at the sign as I pass below, I can’t help but notice the irony
born under the hangman’s work, saved by the hangman’s house. I shrug, the worlds a weird place, and slide in through the door.
ahh but that heat is nice I think, as I cast my eyes around the tavern, looking for exits, at the patrons, and most importantly, to see if there is any spare coin, ignored or forgotten, that may find its way into my purse.
As I approach the bar, I see the smiling face of the barkeep. I give a slight half smile in return from beneath my hood.
Evenin’ ‘keeper. Would you be the hangman of the house? I ask, as I hope up onto a stool. i can’t tell you how glad I am to happen ‘pon your place, grim name ‘n all, outa that pox driven weather
I’m not normally one to show my face in public, but I’m aware of the heavy drip, drip, dripping from the hem of my cloak, and besides, I’m fed up of the steady wet splat on my nose and chin from the edge of my hood, so I peel off my cloak and look for somewhere low down enough to hang it. I’m Skip Gallowson by the way I remark to the barkeep ’n I would greatly appreciate a hot meal and a good drink

"Some lots are more miserable than others. The Sea bore neither hunger nor thirst. Nor cold, nor rain." Kar'i'nas had grumbled internally during their slog along the way. The litany of differences remained fresh, despite the months since he had disembarked.

The slender and sodden figure under a deep hood trods into the Hangman after the halfling. The soft clink of metal issues from each step, and a keen eye sees silver scales through the slit in the cloak. The pommel of a blade presses against the soaked hem. Any casual watcher recognizes the newcomer as a martial type due to the strange shield in the shape of a molten teardrop on his shoulder. Yet, the distinctive skull-tipped staff indicates this traveler was no mere warrior. The shape of the skull and holes around the face reveal it to be the remains of some monstrous humanoid.

The traveler unslings a pack with various snaps, pockets, and an additional rolled sack attached to its exterior. Wooden stakes, iron spikes, and a coil of rope glisten where they neatly occupy these facets. He settles into the chair next to Skip so as to face the tavern and his companion, securing his satchel on the opposite side of the chair from the rogue. He smoothed the wispy curl of his beard, revealing his green chin as he addressed the bartender, "The same, 'keep. What would you call the lands around your tavern?"

The elf woman enters the tavern silently, acutely aware of the many eyes that were upon her. Her hair is unkempt, full of tangles, leaves, and small sticks. "I'll have a cup of whatever passes for wine in this place," she says to the barkeep.
Aug 3, 2020 6:43 pm
In spite of her best efforts, Morticia completely fails to fade into the background. She wears a dark, ragged cloak with a heavy hood. Even though her skin is the color of dark ash that fades into the darkness of her hood, no amount of head gear can cover the giant horn emerging from her forehead, adding another 6 inches to her 6 feet of muscled height. She looks nervously around the room with milky white eyes that one could be forgiven for assuming were blighted by cataracts. She is unused to these kinds of places. In spite of this unease, her lip twitches into a smile at the gnomes joke. "Aye. I'll have the same as the gnome." Quickly she adds, "If that's alright of course."

Balian enters the inn and steps off to one side, allowing his eyes to adjust to the light in the room. Lowering the hood of his cloak, Balian makes his way over to the crowded bar, and sits on one of the few empty stools.

I'll have a tankard of whatever you have on tap as well as a meal. There's no rush, I can dry off until you get to me.

"Pardon me, but may I sit here?"

A human man with neatly parted black hair and waxed moustache plops down at the bar next to the gnome and the tiefling. He slumps back in his chair with a sigh, clearly exhausted as his backpack hits the ground. He leans back with his face towards the ceiling before looking at the people he has just set next to. "Oh my, pardon me." He straightens his leather vest for a moment, then waves to the nearest employee. "One glass on bourbon, if you don't mind. And some of your finest...food." He smiles awkwardly at the two of you, and holds his hand out to the tiefling awkwardly. "My name is Dr. Carter Ward. And you are?"
Aug 4, 2020 5:45 pm
Morticia takes the hand, also awkwardly, as if it took her a moment to remember what handshakes are, and when she did, really tried to overcompensate. "Hello. I'm Morticia. Just Morticia. Uh.... Pleasure to meet you." She holds the hand shake way too long as she stalls for time to remember what comes next in a social greeting. "What brings you here?" she finally says.

Skip winces as he watches the incredibly awkward exchange.
And I thought I was socially awkward
Aug 4, 2020 8:06 pm
Lunora makes a half-hearted attempt to disguise her interest in the newcomer.
Aug 5, 2020 1:32 pm
Kar'i'nas lowered his hood to allow his top knot and the rest of his long, black hair to dry. He looks over the gnome to the meticulous human and says, "Are you a criminal to seek pardons from everyone you meet?"

"I am Kar'i'nas. Like Morticia asked, what brings such a well-dressed traveler to slog through the mud?"

Balian looks around at the crowded bar and the strangers that are gathered at it. His momentarily rest on the elf and Balian quickly looks away.
OOC:
out of curiosity, who wouldn't mind sitting beside Balian?
Aug 5, 2020 4:45 pm
Skip slides a stool out with his foot, nodding at Ser Balian to take a seat.
To Morticia, he says "Course it’ll be alright, custom is custom. Your coin will be as good as mine"
Aug 5, 2020 5:51 pm
"Oh! Oh good. I'm quite hungry." As if to emphasize her point there is an audible growl from her stomach. "I've been on the road for a long time."
Aug 5, 2020 5:59 pm
Balian completed his order for a meal and then looks over at Skip, My thanks for the seat.
Aug 6, 2020 9:25 am

OOC:
Nope, sorry, just wanted to give the last player a shot at entering before I set the game in motion. But seeing as how I've given him a fair few days, I'll get going :)
The door to the tavern opens and an older, gruff looking man walks in and orders an ale at the bar.
OOC:
Skallagrimm, that's you based on what I believe your character ended up being. Feel free to properly introduce your character when you have time
You all receive your food and drink and are surprised by the quality of it. The food is hearty stew, the ale deep and almost completely black and the wine crisp without being sour. The bartender looks at Kar'i'nas and shrugs, "This here is the Trade Way. You're not too far from Triel if you walk further south. Maybe another day or two."

Suddenly, the tavern door swings open once more, and a hush falls over the room. Framed by the lamp-lit fog, a form strides through the doorway. His heavy, booted footfalls and the jingle of his coins shatter the silence. His brightly colored clothes are draped in loose folds about him, and his hat hangs askew, hiding his eyes in shadows. Without hesitation, he calls out each of your names and beckons you all over to an empty table where he sits down.

As you make your way over there he starts to speak in an accented voice, "I have been sent to you to deliver this message. If you be creatures of honor, you will come to my master's aid!" He pulls from his tunic a sealed letter, addressed to all of you in beautiful flowing script. He drops the letter on the table. "Take the west road from here some five hours march down through the Svalich Woods. There you will find my master in Barovia."

Letter
Aug 7, 2020 8:11 am
Skip slots open the seal with a dagger and lays the letter out for everyone to read
Aug 7, 2020 12:50 pm
Balian reads the letter as Skip lays it on the table. Once done he looks at the messenger So... you were sent to find each of us and deliver this message. How'd you know we were all here at the tavern at this very moment?
Aug 7, 2020 1:02 pm
The messsenger smiles smugly, "We saw you approach the area a couple of days ago, it wasn't hard to surmise that you'd be at this fine establishment since it's the only tavern on the way. If there's nothing else, I best be on my way..."
Aug 7, 2020 3:44 pm
"How did you know our names?" Lunora asks suspiciously.
Aug 7, 2020 4:57 pm
The githyanki leans forward and scans the letter. He says with zest, "It sounds like you need a strong arm, and have the resources to back the claim. I will head to this Barovia and face this slave Kolyan and his lover’s foe."
Aug 7, 2020 5:54 pm
"I’m ain’t so sure about just running straight off. Like Lunora said, how’d you know our names? And, what’s with this illness?" asks Skip,
Aug 7, 2020 6:33 pm
"Well, this person needs our help! Surely we should assist!"
Aug 7, 2020 6:36 pm
"I ain’t sayin’ we don’t go help, but I am sayin’ we don’t run off blind. I never ‘visit’ a place I haven’t watched first, an’ that’s kept me breathin’ all this time"
Aug 7, 2020 6:58 pm
Indeed, people do need our help and I'm all for helping them. Yet, don't you think it's a bit odd that they knew our names, what we looked like, and when we'd all be together.

Balian says his piece while keeping his eyes on the messenger.
OOC:
I'll make an insight roll to try and get a feel for the messanger.

"I agree with the gnome. Wise warriors gather information before dashing in to save the day."
Aug 7, 2020 8:59 pm
The gith makes a noise with its throat and answered, "You just announced your names to this whole tavern. Any sod could come up and call you Skip if you do that enough. This Kolyan appears to have deep pockets. You can get a galley more than a name with that, and that’s not discounting using any Art."

He leans back and says, "I’m sure this slave of the people Kolyan will fill in details. If you want to sit in the stew and stare at Barovia, enjoy being wet and hungry. I’ll take this man’s silver and get dry."
Aug 8, 2020 6:18 am
Patiently, Skip looks up and makes eye contact with Kar’i’nas. "Even just a snippet of info might make or break the day, we can at least ask ‘round this ‘ere tavern to see if anyone ‘as ears for any happenings down the west rod aways. Man said this is the only place around. That’ll attract folk. Folk see ‘n hear things. Then we can all run ‘eadlong behind you to save the fair maiden"
Aug 8, 2020 6:55 am
The man laughs, "My people have eyes and ears everywhere. We needed to find people that can help us and after observing you for a while we chose you.", he throws his hands up defensively, "There’s no magic going on I assure you. You can choose to answer our calling or not, either way...".

Balian, you look at this man and you think that he’s being very careful with what exactly he says. He seems to sort of hand wave your questions away and when he says that there’s no magic involved you see his eyes avert for a split second.

Amid the silent stares of the patronage, the gypsy strides to the bar and says to the wary barkeep, "Fill the glasses, one and all. Their throats are obviously parched." He drops a purse heavy with gold on the bar. With that, he leaves.
The babble of tavern voices resumes, although somewhat subdued.

Quietly, the tavern door opens, and a grizzled old man slips in. He does his best to slide up to the group without attracting attention.
Aug 8, 2020 2:16 pm
Balian watches the gypsy leave the tavern. Speaking to no one in particular he simply states his opinion. He seemed to be telling us what he knows, yet it may not have been everything. Obviously, someone needs help and with the money our mysterious friend easily dropped that we will be well compensated. I'm in... I leave for this... Barovia as soon as I can.
Aug 8, 2020 2:21 pm
As the gypsy leaves, the Gnome steps Upto the bar to enquire about the place named in the letter, and for any knowledge about the name Kolyan.

Noticing the grizzled old man sidling Upto the table, Skip cocks a quizzical eye at him. "help you friend?"

Kar’i’nas lets the Prime gnome lay out his preferred manner of obtaining jobs. The gith retorts, "Well, go shake down the crowd for their two coppers, berk. It’s not rash to go talk to the potential client face to face. Most times jobs don’t look for you, and I’ll count it fortune one did come looking."

He saunters to the bar to fetch his drink. He then asks the keep, "Seems most don’t like the fellow with the coin. Why would that be?"
Aug 8, 2020 2:54 pm
Skip watches, incredulous, as that damned Gith starts to do what he himself was starting to do. He looks around to see if anyone else has noticed this display of, (in the gnomes mind at least), mindless, egotistical, brazen posturing. Then starts to loudly and obviously question the locals about "...the gypsy fella with the coin..."

The bartender looks at you and furrows his eyebrows, "Barovia? That’s an old, local myth. They say that it was a valley not too far from here that one day just...disappeared", he clicks his fingers as he says the last word, "I don’t know anyone named Kolyan. The reason for the distrust among the locals is that the man you spoke to is a Vistani, a travelling folk. Personally I find that most of them are friendly enough, they keep to themselves mostly but the ones that do swing by the tavern are usually quite a fun bunch. But a lot of the locals think they’re up to no good...misunderstood I reckon"
Aug 8, 2020 10:06 pm
"Vistani!?!" Skallagrim blurts, sending ale accross the table, he raises his voice as he stands

Lunora remains quiet while drinking her wine. The strange creature has a short temper. That will get you killed in our line of work. She turns her attention to the barkeep, listening to his explanation. "Some humans can be so small-minded and self-centered," she says earnestly, the irony of her statement seeming completely lost on her.

The Gnome looks a little sheepish as the realisation that the Gith was actually helping him has dawned, and now he feels he ought to try and be pleasant and inclusive.

This will definitely be an interesting group to travel with. We haven't even started yet and look what's happened. Cassian thinks to himself as he watches the outburst from the newcomer. Looking around at the others, Balian overhears Morticia's response. Indeed, seeing as how all of us were just literally served an invitation into who knows what, the least we can do is be civil. Especially since we may have to fight together.
Aug 10, 2020 12:06 pm
The Gith grins and replies, "Towns on the edge may drift from time to time, seeping through the cracks. That's a basic dark, cutter, but I'm no greybeard to sort whether this Barovia is one such place or not. This makes me doubly interested."

The githyanki pushes away from the bar and addresses Balian with a friendly laugh, "This is far from a tenar'i nest, but we can pound the steel into a single edge. Once you have concluded your meditations, let the willing join me in seeking out this k'ya that plagues the slave of Barovia."

You all exit the tavern together. The fog is if anything even thicker now, but the rain has at least subdued a little bit. You walk to the west towards the unknown, black pools of water stand like dark mirrors in and around the muddy roadway. Giant trees loom on both sides of the road, their branches clawing at the mist. The fog spills out of the forest to swallow up the road behind you as you walk for hours and hours.

Finally ahead, jutting from the impenetrable woods on both sides of the road, are high stone buttresses looming gray in the fog. Huge iron gates hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the rusted bars. Two headless statues of armed guardians flank the gate, their heads now lying among the weeds at their feet. They greet you only with silence.

As you approach the gates the slowly start to swing open, screeching as the hinges move.

Morticia, your words echo through the woods but there’s no response.

Kar’i’nas, you don’t see any evidence of anyone hiding but you do feel a prickly sensation in the back of the neck like you’re being watched. You realise that you’ve had that sensation for a while now.

Balian, the statues look centuries old. You can’t tell who crafted them.

Skip, initially you think it could be general degradation through time, but the fact that it’s only the heads that have been chopped off could indicate that they’ve been deliberately removed.

Skallagrimm, you keep an eye out for any threats but don’t see any. You get a similar uneasy feeling like Kar’i’nas as if you’re being watched.

Resting the blade of the long sword on his shoulder, Balian follows the others through the gate. As they cross through the gates, Balian moves up to the front of the group and off to one side. As the others pass through, Balian walks at a slow pace keeping watch for anything out of the ordinary.

Lunora nocks an arrow, always wary. She is well-versed in the ways of the forest.
Aug 12, 2020 10:34 am
You slowly and cautiously walk through the towering gates, wary of any potential dangers that might lurk on the other side. As you all walk through, the hinges screech once more as the massive doors close behind you. You see no one and you can't help but wonder who exactly is controlling these gates.

You're faced once more by the dark forest. Towering trees, whose tops are lost in heavy gray mist, block out all but a death-gray light. The tree trunks are unnaturally close to one another, and the woods have the silence of a forgotten grave, yet exude the feeling of an unvoiced scream.

Suddenly ahead of you through the mist comes a skeletal warhorse and rider, both clad in ruined chainmail. The skeletal rider holds up a rusted lantern that sheds no light. It's still quite a bit of distance away and the rider looks like it's searching for something. Suddenly the horse rears up and something small and glittering falls from the rider to the ground. It then bursts through a thicket of trees deeper into the woods and disappears.
Aug 12, 2020 11:47 am
The gith scowls at the place. He moves toward where the skeleton appeared with a swift, sure lope like that of a wolf. He says tersely, "Undead rider. Pursue."

Kar'i'nas, the rider didn't seem threatening to you but more confused. Its head kept looking around from side to side as if it was trying to find something and although it did momentarily look at you guys, it didn't seem to take a prolonged interest in any of you. You look at the spot where it went into the forest and you can't grasp how it was even possible. The trees are extremely close together so it shouldn't physically be possible, but you can faintly see the outline of the rider disappearing through the forest in the distance.

You definitely get a sense that something has shifted. The mist is behaving extremely weird, the fact that it seemed to envelop you and gather mass behind you as you went further into the forest and ever since you moved through the gate it seems to have dissipated a bit. It's still there, but it's much more translucent and normal acting. If you were to take a guess, you think there's a good chance that you're in a different plane of existence.

You move up to the item that the rider dropped and see a small, blue gemstone dropped in the mud.
Aug 12, 2020 12:05 pm
Skip, you think the beast reared up due to its rider. There's nothing here that immediately catches your eye as something that could've spooked it. But you also got the sense that the rider itself was confused and maybe a bit panicked in the way he was handling the horse.
Aug 12, 2020 12:09 pm
Looking towards Kar’i’nas, Skip, speaking low, asks Kar’i’nas, I’m not one for horse riding, but I reckon tha’ rider was lookin’ for someone. But not us. It don’t look like his horse was spooked. Spooky maybe but not spooked.
Aug 12, 2020 12:16 pm
Kar'i'nas watched the rider press into the wood and replies. His words are no longer clipped, "He is no mere bone-knight, and this land sits beyond the Prime--I think we have arrived in this Barovia."

He crouches and scoops up the blue jewel, "I wonder whom this rider seeks, that he has recklessly tossed aside this jewel."

When the others arrive, the gith displays the jewel on his palm and says, "The bone-knight dropped this jewel. Anyone a jeweler or able to read the Weave?"

Skip, you look a the two letters and it quickly becomes apparent to you that they haven't been written by the same person. The letter you received at the tavern describes Ireena as "the love of my life" while the second letter claims that she is the daughter of the Burgomaster. It is a very good forgery though as the handwriting is virtually identical. There are no indicators as to how long ago the two letters were written but the look of the paper would indicate that they're both fairly recent. The body is as mentioned at least a few days old, so the letters are probably not much older than that.
Aug 14, 2020 12:44 pm
Balian stands there as they examine the letters. It would seem that our little journey just got a bit more interesting. Two similar letters, yet are from two different points of view. The father or the lover... I'm guessing we'll find answers at our final destination.

Morticia reads the letter and becomes very quiet. Occasionally she mouths a few words "Give us up for dead," "holy men," "the devil may be contained." She unconsciously rubs her horn, a nervous tick that other holy men never managed to beat out of her. Those holy men told her to hide herself from the world. That it was not the place of devil spawn to carry out the work of good gods. She looks around, and sees no holy men.

"Two letters, one to warn us away, one to invite us in. And the messenger bearing the letter to warn us away..." Morticia trails off and looks down at the body.

You walk back to the path. After a short while you finally come out on the other side of it and instead face an empty moor stretching out in front of you, only broken by the continuation of the dirt road. For another mile you encounter nothing, the chilly air starts to permeate your bones as you seek some kind of solace from all this desolation. Finally you spot what appear to be a tall building with a couple of smaller ones on either side and some kind of empty enclosure further away from it. As you get closer you can hear small sobbing cries coming from the space in between all the buildings. As you move past the first building you can easily see from the road, lit up by torches hanging from the building you would presume might be stables stands to children. The sobs are coming from a boy and he's being comforted by what could be his older sister. They haven't noticed you yet.

There's no door to the basement on the outside, just the front door. I'm assuming that you're entering the house that way
A wrought-iron gate with hinges on one side and a lock on the other fills the archway of a stone portico. As you approach it and push it, it swings open with a rusty shriek. Oil lamps hang from the portico ceiling by chains, flanking a set of oaken doors that open into a grand foyer.

Hanging on the south wall of the foyer is a shield emblazoned with what looks like a coat-of-arms of a stylized golden windmill on a red field, flanked by framed portraits of stony-faced aristocrats. Mahogany-framed double doors set with panes of stained glass are placed at the far end of the foyer and as you open them you see that they lead into a main hall.

The hall runs the width of the house, with a black marble fireplace at one end and a sweeping, red marble staircase at the other. Mounted on the wall above the fireplace is a longsword with a windmill cameo worked into the hilt. The wood-paneled walls are ornately sculpted with images of vines, flowers, nymphs, and satyrs. The decorative paneling follows the staircase as it circles upward to the second floor.

As you enter the hall, the doors slam shut behind you.

Kar’i’nas, the longsword comes easily off the wall and hovers in front of you. It looks like a perfectly good sword.

Skip, the doors leading back out to the foyer are locked, but the door by Morticia opens. This oak-paneled room looks like a hunter's den. Mounted above the fireplace is a stag's head, and positioned around the outskirts of the room are three stuffed wolves.

Two padded chairs draped in animal furs face the hearth, with an oak table between them supporting a cask of wine, two carved wooden goblets, a pipe rack, and a candelabrum. A chandelier hangs above a cloth-covered table surrounded by four chairs.

Two cabinets stand against the walls.

Skip, the north cabinet is unlocked and holds a small box containing a deck of playing cards and an assortment of wine glasses. The cabinet to the east is locked
OOC:
The map btw reads: Top = East, Right = South, Bottom = West, Left = North
Kar’i’nas, you swing the sword through the air and test it. It feels like a perfectly good longsword
Aug 18, 2020 5:47 pm
"Hey, old man" growls Skip "now who’s lookin’ at pretty baubauls?". He then puts the box with playing cards into his pack for later examination - ’or maybe play a few hands with that fool old man and make a bit of coin’.
The gnome then moves to the locked cabinet in the east wall. And starts working at the lock

"Does anyone have a prybar or similar device that we could use to open the cabinet?"
Aug 18, 2020 8:07 pm
Kar'i'nas steps over to the cabinet. The gith rests his staff and sword against the wall near at hand and produces a crowbar from his pack. "Monsters can wait."

He then set the edge of the tool into the gap and levers it.

Aug 18, 2020 10:04 pm
Skip steps back from the door with a flourish and a bow "By all means master huntsman" he quips with a grin, drawing his rapier and getting ready

What could possibly be behind the door? Balian says as he stands beside Kar'i'nas.

OOC:
Sorry, I lost it in the stream of posts. The doors are closed and locked with the children still outside, so you can't call them in, but I'll retcon the following before you entered the house
Morticia, the girl smiles shyly at you, "My name is Rosavalda and this is my brother Thornboldt. But we're usually just called Rose and Thorn. Our parents are named Gustav and Elisabeth. We don't know much about the monster, just that they locked it in the basement and they sometimes tell us to stay in our rooms. Our baby brother Walter is still in his nursery on the third floor, I wanted to get him too but I was too scared".

Kar'i'nas, the wood crunches as you break open the locked cabinet. Inside is a heavy crossbow, a light crossbow, a hand crossbow, and 20 bolts for each weapon
OOC:
In case the map is unclear, there are four more doors in the main hall as well as the stairs leading up
Aug 19, 2020 11:43 am
Do any of the crossbows give off a magical aura? Or are they shiny?
Aug 19, 2020 1:25 pm
Skallagrim recoils from Morticia's touch, shakily he stammers "I'll never do no demon's bidding" as he backs away
Aug 19, 2020 2:27 pm
The crossbows, like the sword before it, look in pretty good shape but that’s about it
Aug 19, 2020 2:47 pm
"Anyone need some range to their attacks? I quite fancy that hand crossbow meself"
Aug 19, 2020 4:38 pm
The gith stows his crowbar and obtains the sword and staff. He remarks, "I am content. Let's proceed."

"If you want to play clutch warden, the stairs are in the front. We have monsters to slay," replied Kar'i'nas.
Aug 19, 2020 9:49 pm

Aug 19, 2020 10:17 pm
Appearing to agree with Kar’i’nas, Skip skulks stealthily back into the hall with the stairs, and begins to investigate the doors. He starts with the door furthest away, in the little nook area, reasoning this might be the basement

I apologize, that was a copy paste error. What it should have said was:
Morticia gives the girl a quick squeeze to reassure her. "I'll find your brother for you. Don't be afraid. I'll protect you."

Morticia turns to the githyanki. "Suppose the monster is no longer in the basement? Suppose it is already free, and lurking in the house? I won't risk it. Go slay monsters if it makes you feel better. I'd rather save a child." Morticia heads to the stairs.

Aug 20, 2020 12:37 pm
OOC:
Skip, two of the doors lead to the same room, however there's a door inside one of the rooms so I applied a corresponding investigate check for that instead
Skip, the room in the upper right corner is the kitchen. It's tidy, with dishware, cookware, and utensils neatly placed on shelves. A worktable has a cutting board and rolling pin atop it. A stone, dome-shaped oven stands near the east wall, its bent iron stovepipe connecting to a hole in the ceiling. Behind the stove and to the left is a thin door leading to a well-stocked pantry. All the food in the pantry appears fresh.

The large room to the left appears to be a dining room. The centerpiece of this wood-paneled room is a carved mahogany table surrounded by eight high-backed chairs with sculpted armrests and cushioned seats. A crystal chandelier hangs above the table, which is covered with resplendent silverware and crystal-ware polished to a dazzling shine. Mounted above the marble fireplace is a mahogany-framed painting of an alpine vale.

The wall paneling is carved with elegant images of deer among the trees. However as you investigate it closer you can see twisted faces carved into the tree trunks and wolves lurking amid the carved foliage.

Red silk drapes cover the windows, and a tapestry depicting hunting dogs and horse-mounted aristocrats chasing after a wolf hangs from an iron rod bolted to the south wall.

Next to the dining room is a small cloak room that has several black cloaks hanging from hooks on the walls. A top hat sits on a high shelf.

The gith follows Skip with his weapons at the ready. When no threat manifests, he takes to inspecting the rooms with the others. He places the top hat on his head and collects the silver with his mental arts as he moves about the rooms looking for possible hidden routes.

As he starts up the stairs Balian turns and speaks to Kar'i'nas. I'll keep her out of trouble, if you find anything... basement door, or whatever, give a shout. I'll do the same.

Balian then draws his sword and heads up the stairs, following the tiefling.

Aug 21, 2020 12:08 pm
Skip, the iron rod doesn't move.

Skallagrimm, the small hatch opens a small dumbwaiter. It only appears to lead up and not further down though.

You search the downstairs rooms quite thoroughly but none of you find any way of getting down to the basement.

Morticia and Balian move upstairs. Unlit oil lamps are mounted on the walls of this elegant hall. Hanging above the mantelpiece is a wood-framed portrait of what you presume to be the family of the house: Gustav and Elisabeth with their two smiling children, Rose and Thorn. Cradled in the father's arms is a swaddled baby, which the mother regards with a hint of scorn.

Standing suits of armor flank wooden doors in the east and west walls. Each suit of armor clutches a spear and has a visored helm shaped like a wolf's head. The doors are carved with dancing youths. The red marble staircase that started on the first floor continues its upward spiral to the next floor and you feel a cold draft coming down the steps.

Skip, you fire a bolt that punctures through its midsection. Balian and Kar'i'nas, you both open up gashes in the armour as well, the metal seemingly being more brittle after many, many years of neglect.

The armour barely holds it together, but it does enough to swing both fists at the gith.

Kar'i'nas, you duck one fist but double over as the second one hammers into your ribcage.

Lunora, you take a swing at it as well but your sword glances off its shoulder as it turns back.

Morticia you're already on the third floor
Kar'i'nas, there's no salvaging the armor. As the force left the metal starts to rust before your eyes, so even if you were to discount the big gashes opened up by Balian and yourself, it can't be repaired into anything functional.

Skip, you can't hear anything as you put your ears to the doors. None of the doors are locked. The door on your left hand side opens up into a bathroom containing a wooden tub with clawed feet, a small iron stove with a kettle resting atop it, and a barrel under a spigot in the east wall. A cistern on the roof used to collect rainwater, which was borne down a pipe to the spigot; however, the plumbing no longer works.

The double doors on your right side have dusty panes of stained glass set into them. Designs in the glass resemble windmills. The room appears to have been the master bedroom. The dusty, cobweb-filled room has burgundy drapes covering the windows. Furnishings include a four-poster bed with embroidered curtains and tattered gossamer veils, a matching pair of empty wardrobes, a vanity with a wood-framed mirror and jewelry box, and a padded chair. A rotting tiger-skin rug lies on the floor in front of the fireplace, which has a dust-covered portrait of what you guess to be Gustav and Elisabeth hanging above it. A web-filled parlor in the southwest corner contains a table and two chairs. Resting on the dusty tablecloth is an empty porcelain bowl and a matching jug.

A door facing the foot of the bed has a full-length mirror mounted on it. The door opens to reveal an empty, dust-choked closet. A door in the parlor leads to an outside balcony.

In the corner opposite the balcony is a dumbwaiter.

"What’s the bettin’ that there dumb waiter ‘eats down t’the basement?" skip asks the rest of the group, while he walks towards the jewellery box. Just to be super clear, you're on what appears to be the top floor, the stairs end here
Kar'i'nas and Skip, you try out the dumbwaiter but it does indeed just go into the kitchen.

Kar'i'nas, you investigate the area for hidden doors. You find none in the rooms you've investigated so far, but out by the stairs you suddenly notice a vein in the wood jutting out unnaturally from the west wall. You press it and it clicks and swings outward to reveal a cobweb-filled wooden staircase leading up to the attic.

Skallagrimm, you lift the axe and bring it down onto the padlock with enough force to knock it off the door. As you enter the room you find no beasts though. This room contains a bricked-up window flanked by two dusty, wood-framed beds sized for children. Closer to the door is a toy chest with windmills painted on its sides and a dollhouse that's a perfect replica of the dreary edifice in which you stand. These furnishings are draped in cobwebs. Lying in the middle of the floor are two small skeletons wearing tattered but familiar clothing.

Lunora, the children outside of the house appears to have been wearing the same clothes as the skeletons.

Skip, you look at the dollhouse and you see the full layout of the house. The one room that seems of most interest to you is a hidden room in the attic that leads to a spiral staircase going all the way down.

"Who are you?". Suddenly you see the two children from the courtyard manifest over their bones. They look similar to how they did earlier, but less solid.

Sorry, I have a few deadlines coming up at work coupled with a lot of things at home which has absolutely wrecked my brain this week. Expect next week to be similar, but hopefully it should be a lot better after that
Skip, the door is unlocked and you hear no noise coming from behind the door. Red velvet drapes cover the windows of the library. An exquisite mahogany desk and a matching high-back chair face the entrance and the fireplace, above which hangs a framed picture of a windmill perched atop a rocky crag. Situated in corners of the room are two overstuffed chairs. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line the south wall. A rolling wooden ladder allows one to more easily reach the high shelves.

Lunora, you feel yourself guided over to the bookcase and focus your attention on a red book with a blank spine. As you pull it, the bookshelf springs open and reveals another, smaller room.

This room also contains bookshelves, although from a quick glance the books appear darker and older. A heavy wooden chest with clawed iron feet stands against the south wall, its lid half-closed. Sticking out of the chest is a skeleton in leather armor. Clutched in the skeleton's hand is a letter with a familiar seal.

Skip, you pry the letter from the skeleton's hand and open it. It reads:

My most pathetic servant,

I am not a messiah sent to you by the Dark Powers of this land. I have not come to lead you on a path to immortality. However many souls you have bled on your hidden altar, however many visitors you have tortured in your dungeon, know that you are not the ones who brought me to this beautiful land. You are but worms writhing in my earth.

You say that you are cursed, your fortunes spent. You abandoned love for madness, took solace in the bosom of another woman, and sired a stillborn son. Cursed by darkness? Of that I have no doubt. Save you from your wretchedness? I think not. I much prefer you as you are.

Your dread lord and master,

Strahd von Zarovich

Skip, you don't see any markings on the skeleton's belongings to determine who he is, but you do see three darts stuck in his armour and his ribcage that seems to have come from a trap in the chest. The chest contains three blank books with black leather covers, three spell scrolls (bless, protection from poison, and spiritual weapon), the deed to the house, the deed to a windmill, and a signed will. The windmill referred to in the second deed is situated in the mountains east of Vallaki. The will is signed by Gustav and Elisabeth Durst and bequeathes the house, the windmill, and all other family property to Rosavalda and Thornboldt Durst in the event of their parents' deaths.

Lunora, you feel your mind flood with information about Strahd. Sep 13, 2020 3:06 pm
"echoey chanting?" Skallagrimm sputters, as he grps his sister even tighter "no, no, no... This is a bad idea."
Sep 13, 2020 4:00 pm
Skip looks back to the man/child. Putting a finger to his lips he motions for quiet from the mewling warrior
Sep 14, 2020 12:50 am
The gith followed Skip at a long distance to allow the soft-soled gnome the opportunity to use his skills. The warrior knew his armor would likely give him away.

Morticia will try to listen over the clinking of Kar'i'nas's armor. She winces visibly at his klanking steps.

You walk up to the branching path and try to discern anything in the dim light, but you still can't tell where the chanting comes from and you can't see where either path leads to, only that the eastern path has another branch as it has a path turning south and one that turns north a few feet ahead. The western path has open doorways on either side of the tunnel and seems to open up into a large room at the end.

Morticia peers over Lunora's shoulder so we have a tiny gnome, average halfling, and tall tiefling all peaking around the corner one after the other.

The gith sought to parse the chant to discern what the speakers utter and what manner of being (flesh, spirit, or other) they might have.

Kar'i'nas, the chanting is too far away and echoey to tell from where it originates or what exactly is being chanted.

The open doorways all lead to crypts. You find ones bearing the names of Walter, Gustav, Elisabeth, Rosavalda and Thornboldt Durst. The crypts all contain an empty coffin on a stone bier.
Sep 17, 2020 1:04 pm
"THAT's ME!!!!" screams Skallagrimm, pointing a trembling finger towards the crypt marked Thornboldt. Then, upon seeing the crypt marked, Rosavalda he can't even utter a word. He collapses to the ground, shaking in fits of hysterical tears.

"Someone cover his mouth" Skip hisses, mindful that the noise of the boy/mans scream and tears will draw attention. The gnome moves away from the doorways to the crypts, towards the other direction the corridor leads. He whips out his hand crossbow and loads a bolt, ready for anything that might appear out of the gloom, attracted by the noise of Skallagrims fear and misery.

Lunora is taken aback by the sight of the crypts and her mouth goes dry for a moment. "Hush, Skallagrim. Be quiet," she hisses. "Where are the bodies?" she wonders aloud.

The Gith followed Skip with his weapon ready. "I like not the long form chant. It whispers of cult work. Hopefully as gibberish and useful as their written screed, but I think not."

Sep 20, 2020 2:56 am
Lunora fumes silently at the notion of everyone doing their own thing. In a small group, it was more tactically sound to come up with a plan of action first, then act upon it. Besides, she should be the one making decisions.
Sep 20, 2020 3:10 pm
Looking to Lunora, Skip whispers We can worry ‘bout the bodies later. We’re goin’ this way know, ever’one be ready. An’ Rose? Keep yer baby brother quiet or we all gonna get deaded" with that, he whirls back around, a whisper in the shadows, and stalks forward

Skip, you move towards the room at the end of the corridor to the west. This room contains a plain wooden table flanked by long benches. Moldy humanoid bones lie strewn on the dirt floor. There are exits to the north and west, and in the middle of the south wall is a darkened alcove.

The bones don't make up whole skeletons, at least not without a massive amount of assembly. Some of them look snapped in half and with a little imagination it's almost as if you can see a small trail leading to the alcove.

Skip, you slowly approach the alcove and just manage to jump back and out of the way as a massive, slithering wormlike beast darts out from the shadows. It rears up, unfurls four tentacles to reveal its beak and screeches as it readies another attack.
