The Lost City

Nov 22, 2020 12:12 am
Otawla sits by the fire, and recalls his story. You've heard it many times, but a good story bears repeating, and if you're bored enough, a poor story as well. Three weeks onto this voyage however, you are south beyond Stygia and no one among you has been this far. This is wild, inhospitable territory. Strange creatures are glimpsed in the trees, and huge shapes lumber beneath your river barge.

"The man that came to me was feverish, and his eyes rolled with wildness. I could not make out his works but one in three, for he spoke a dialect of Stygian that rang oddly in my ears. I gave him a cup and sent Peglay to fetch fortified wine." The slave Peglay beams at being mentioned in so great a tale, his burn-scarred face seeming almost normal in the firelight.

"His tale, oft repeated before he succombed to his illness, a wasting disease that I think he was born with, for his limbs were mishapen, as happens when a birth is wrong and the child is allowed to life." Otawla makes a superstitious sign against evil. "His tale, he told me where he came, with only rudimentary guidepoints. We have seen them on this passage - the split cliff like as if from an axe blow, the river of veridian water from the strange mud on the bank, the great lake and the island city that we have not yet seen. But we are close my friends. Close to obscene wealth." He does not say it, but his mood, his sudden darkening of his expression, tell you that he does not say you are also close to death and misfortune.

"He spoke the word again, 'Zukundu,' and pushed a rock into my hand. It was jade, and set with gold and a sapphire the size of the end of my finger. Magnificent, I'd never seen the like. The jade was carved with a taboo, a warning. I do not know what it meant, but in old Stygian, it would have meant 'falling stars' or maybe 'where stars fall' I do not know. Maybe something else. But it was a warning. My eyes were not for the unfamiliar glyph, but for the gold and the gem. I sold it and equipped this expedition. You each have a stake, your freedom and your share of the wealth, less your slave price." You are not all slaves, but some are, especially the porters, brought to haul the booty back to the known lands.

He pushes a stick into the fire, sparks flying high into the night like omens. "I think it will be tomorrow or the next two days. I feel it in my bones. What say you, wizard Odan Nehebaku? Are the omens good?"
Let's introduce ourselves. Please give us a description of yourself and your gear, and anything else the others know of you.

Just for magnitude, there are the four PCs, Otawla, his personal slave Peglay, and a dozen porter-salves.
Nov 22, 2020 9:09 am
Odan crouched near the fire. The dark-skinned sage's mood had soured as the journey had stretched on, and he had grown somewhat withdrawn from his employer, his only connection to the stone that had slipped through his grasp. He relied on his memory to interpret the sigil, and a crudely drawn copy, rather than the specimen itself, which he dared not pursue.

He was a brooding figure, with thick frown lines that seemed to cut even through his unkempt beard. His hair, once wild, was drawn tightly back, exposing a tall widow's peak, and leaving the remainder to cascade over his shoulders in unbraided ropes. A dark brown robe cut from durable fabrics covered black-dyed linens. His travel garmets, though simple in cloth and ornament, were well-cut, betraying either wealth or an unusual windfall. Though in his many pockets and pouches, secreted below his outer robes, he seemed to have a dizzying array of amulets and talismans that might dazzle and impress, he wore only one around his neck - a shockingly realistic snake skull, the size of a fist, that seemed to be polished out of solid basalt, a silk-wrapped metal chain threaded through its eyes.

Though it now hung loosely around his shoulders, the silk-sheer scarf with its almost hypnotic, geometric patterns was often bound tightly around his face, to protect him from the insects and odors that were becoming more common as they roamed deeper inland. His hands were picked out of the dark by rings of exotic polished stones and metals of strange cast, glinting in the firelight as he turned them with his thumb, an absent-minded tic.

He narrowed his eyes - shocking, pale green that stood out from his chestnut skin - cross the fire at Otawla. He did not know if he was playing some game, hedging the outrage of his men against the learned and the strange, putting onto his shoulders the responsibility for their safety. Reminding them in every breath he was supposed to be a sorcerer and not merely a studious man.

"Listen too closely to your bones, and they will start complaining to you," he deflected, taking a sip of a thimbleful of spirits. Carefully rationing his remaining flask. "No man should hurry to that part of his life."
Nov 22, 2020 6:36 pm
"Must you always speak in riddles, wizard?", Jarik asked, a hint of a smile on his gaunt face.

Jarik rose to his feet. Big-boned, but lean, Jarik was a big man even by Northrun standards. Unhitching his brilliant red-berry dyed woolen cloak, the merchant held it out to a porter slave standing nearby. The slave took the cloak, retreated back and began to brush away the dust of the day's journey.

"Obscene wealth, Otawla? There is nothing obscene about wealth."

In the dancing light of the fire, the slave-master's haunted sapphire eyes looked even more fey than in the sunlight, and combined with his obsidian-like hair and alabaster palor, he emitted a strange mien hinting at menace. Jarik removed his Atlantean sword and sat it across his lap as he sat back down, cross-legged by the fire.
Nov 22, 2020 7:43 pm
"Ha! Keep your omens then. We have no need of the meddling of gods." Otawla grumbles to himself deep in his belly. "No god watches, me, Otawla. I am too small!" He laughs.

To Jarik, he nods. "Right you are. Wealth is only obscene when you can't hold onto it."
Nov 22, 2020 8:32 pm
Roderigo de Cordava stared moodily at the fire, half listening to the conversation, partly lost in a reverie. A man of medium height, dressed in the tattered finery of what was once the attire of a Zingaran noble Freebooter. "I don't care about any barbarous fortune telling, a man makes his own luck by his daring and will to succeed!" His voice raising in pitch he continues "I was cheated out of my inheritance and then cheated out of my captaincy! We will get these jewels and then" his voice rising to a crescendo I will acquire a ship and a crew and those who have plotted against me shall pay!"
Realising he is starting to make a scene he quietens down and with a disarming smile says "but I overreach myself, we are all comrades here, a united crew who shall stop at nothing to achieve our ends - so do I pledge my sword" he says, lifting his cutlass in the air.
Roderigo is a handsome man with the typical olive skin and dark hair of a Zingaran, his hair hangs down in dark ringlets and he affects a thin waxed moustache.

OOC:
I hope it's ok if I start posting while tinkering with my character sheet. I don't want to hold the group up.
Cur looked at the others and tried to work out who he identified with more, the slaves or the would-be treasure-hunters. He himself was likely a mix of both, but desperate times had brought him a sense of solidarity with those in bondage.

The former miner worker-turned-craftsmen warmed his calloused hands by the fire and spoke as little as he could get away with. It was hard for him to feel know that he'd once had respectable work, only to now be scrabbling after stories of treasure. "Just one big score,..." he told himself when approached with the job.

He needed a way to turn over a new leaf, so to speak, and after considering the sorry state of his personal effects, he really had no choice but to sign up. He wasn't threadbare, yet, but if he didn't start finding a way to make some regular coin soon he'd be a pauper or a criminal. Seeking tales of fortune was as good as anything else right now, and maybe if he could put his hands to use again he'd have more respectable employment once this was all over.

One of the porters points to the northern sky, babbling in Kush.
[ +- ] In Kushite
One by one everyone looks north. Lightning lights the sky above clouds, illuminating the night clouds from above. The porters move their bedrolls to slightly higher ground.
Nov 28, 2020 5:31 pm
Jarik looks towards where the porter is pointing, and then says to his comrades, "they think the river is going to flood, they're expecting a heavy downpour. Seems we'll need to make camp on higher ground"

A wet night is pretty disappointing, Cur thinks to himself. "Hopefully, we won't have to harsh a trail tomorrow. A sleepless stormy night would make it rough going."
Nov 30, 2020 11:50 pm
"Drowning would be worse." Odan was no great sailor, but he knew enough to trust them when they spoke words of caution - at least of earthly matters.
Dec 2, 2020 4:56 am
"Touche", laughs Cur. "A soggy bedroll it is."
Dec 2, 2020 5:01 am
Otawla picks this up too, but he says, "Slaves are superstitious. The river would have to flood all of that over there before we would be in danger. Let them quiver, it gives them purpose," He laughs.
Dec 3, 2020 3:36 am
Cur listens, and nods in agreement. "The employer is always right," Cur thinks to himself. He settles in where they've made camp, and watches the sky to see the storm roll in.
Dec 3, 2020 4:19 am
Of course, he was not right. At least, not entirely. The river does not flood beside you, but instead, it does food overland, upstream. The flash flood, toppling trees and crashing through the brush awakes you with a roar. Everyone grabs their gear, and barely have time to do so before the wall of water hits your clearing.

The boat, pulled away from the water sits nearby.

Do you jump in the boat, run for high ground (it's a gamble you can make it), or take your luck with the overland flash flood? You have seconds to decide.
Dec 3, 2020 9:55 am
"Boat! Everyone, now. At least that damn thing floats", Jarvik shouts and then hurtles himself towards the vessel before it is lost.
Dec 3, 2020 4:39 pm
"Make for the high ground!" Odan called out unhelpfully, running in the opposite direction. The boat was in the path of the flood, and would undoubtedly be smashed by the sudden current.
Dec 3, 2020 5:33 pm
GreyGriffin says:
"Make for the high ground!" Odan called out unhelpfully, running in the opposite direction. The boat was in the path of the flood, and would undoubtedly be smashed by the sudden current.
OOC:
LOL! Excellent. This is going to be interesting. Hopefully, one of us will survice. Good luck!
Dec 4, 2020 3:05 am
"Forget the boat, high ground now," Cur says heading away. "Everyone here is about to go for the boat."
Dec 4, 2020 8:40 am
Roderigo, looks around, assessing his options, "leave the boat" he shouts, "The only safety is to get to high ground!" grabbing his personal gear and moving as quickly as he can.
Dec 4, 2020 1:40 pm
There of you head for high ground (make difficulty 1 Brawn(Athletics) checks please).

Jarvik starts to head for the boat, but you see and hear the other three head for high ground. If you want to join them, you've lost a little ground, so your check with be difficulty 2.
OOC:
You roll 2d20. You can invoke a Doom to roll a third. Each result that's equal to or below your TN is a success. If it's equal to or below your focus in that skill, it's two successes.

For example, Jarvik's skill is 12 (10 Brawl plus 2 Expertise in Athletics) and had a Focus on Athletics of 2. If he rolled 2d20 and got a 2 and a 11, he'd have three successes (the 2 counts as 2 because his Focus is 2, and the 11 counts as 1).

Lastly, Momentum. You'll roll and if you have extra successes above the target I set (difficulty 1 for three of you, difficulty 2 for Jarvik), any extra successes go into a group pool called Momentum. The next player can choose to spend, before they roll, a Momentum for an extra d20 (to a maximum roll of 5d20).
Dec 5, 2020 12:16 pm
Here is my roll - Roderigo has a brawn of 11 and Athletics at 2

Rolls

Brawn(Athletics) check - (1D20)

(10) = 10

Brawn (Athletics) check) - (1D20)

(16) = 16

Dec 5, 2020 1:32 pm
Only moments after shouting, Jarvik realises to his horror that he is on his own. A sickening fear grips his stomach as he brings himself to a halt, tunrs around, and runs as fast as he is able towards the rest of the group heading for higher ground.
OOC:
GM, I will invoke a Doom to get an extra roll

Rolls

Skill Test - Brawn - (3d20)

(4814) = 26

Dec 5, 2020 2:50 pm
Roderigo and Jarvik have both achieved the successes needed (1 and 2 respectively) but generate no Momentum.
Dec 8, 2020 5:33 am
Odan scrambles up the rocks, reaching for the higher ground...

Rolls

Athletics (7 - 0/0) - (2d20)

(155) = 20

Dec 8, 2020 1:29 pm
Odan also makes the check successfully.
Dec 9, 2020 4:41 pm
Odan's lanky legs propelled him up the steep bank, deeper into the trees. He came face to face with his mule, which had had the prescience to seek shelter before their clouded human perceptions perceived the danger. Taking hold of the reins before it could retreat further, he watched as the rest of the crew followed, some more reluctantly than others, squinting out through the dark towards the barge, seeing if the vessel's mooring would hold...
Dec 10, 2020 2:28 am
I'll give Phil a bit to make his roll for Cur, then move us along.

The four of you go for high ground, and a wall of water pours from the forest, slamming into your camp site. Porters, slaves, and slavemasters all trying to load their gear into the boat are hammered by the flood. A huge crack can barely be heard from the torrential food. The boat disappears in a spray of water. The water riffs at your feet and Cur loses his footing but grabs while of Jarik's outstretched hand and is pulled behind a sheltering rock. The water starts to creep up and you run for it, higher.

When the water subsides, slowly, you see a ruined wreckage of the jungle forest, and no sign you had ever camped. To the south, the glimmering shimmer of a lake in the distance marks what is likely your original goal. If you are to meet up with Otawla, if he survived in the boat, it will likely be there.
Dec 10, 2020 12:57 pm
"That was far more sudden than I'd have believed possible," said Cur to the others. "We've survived though, which is probably more than we can say for at least some of the others. How are all of you?" He was relieved to be alive, but unsettled by what was a flash flood in the extreme. "That seems beyond reasonable," he thinks to himself. "I'm not sure I've ever seen or heard of a flood that fast, and at such a scale before."
Dec 14, 2020 4:47 am
Did you want to head toward the lake and adventure?
Dec 14, 2020 9:34 am
"Yes, Cur, we’ve survived but have lost Otwala. I believe the lake, yonder, may have been our destination. If Otwala made it, I suggest that’s where he will be headed. Shall we make our way there?"

Roderigo nods and says "Yes, we must go forward, we cannot stay here!"
Dec 15, 2020 2:55 am
Cur shrugs and agrees. "That's as good as any other option," he says. "Certainly better than staying here." Quickly, he scans the area to see if anything that might be worthwhile might have escaped the flood.
OOC:
ANy chance anything useful made it to high round with us?
Dec 15, 2020 3:57 pm
Odan watched as the flash flood rushed past, crouched on the muddy perch, his lip twisted into a tense frown. A thousand curses seemed to boil in his jaw behind that single sullen expression, but he let just one slip. "Damn."
OOC:
I am figuring we didn't lose any of our starting gear in the flood, so we do have one mule.
He tugged the reins of his pack-beast, turning towards the others who gestured towards the lake. He nodded his assent. "It is closer than the sea. And even if he is lost, there may be some village there who might... lend us a canoe to make it back to the coast."
Dec 16, 2020 4:37 am
OOC:
Right, you have your personal gear, whatever was on your character sheets, and nothing else.
Dec 16, 2020 6:10 pm
Borrowing a canoe seems like as a good a plan as any. Let's do it, said Cur. As soon as we're all as collected as we can be let's head out. No reason to hang around longer than we need to at this point.
Dec 16, 2020 7:42 pm
"Yes" Roderigo says, a wicked grin on his face, "I am sure we can convince them that it is in their best interests to give us what we need!"

"Let us leave this cursed spot as soon as we can"

You travel through the sloppy ground following the unnatural flash food. The high ground only lasts a little ways before dropping down lower into the river valley.

After a few hours, the sun is coming up and you see the glint of the lake ahead of you. You're tired from navigating the dense bush, and the thought of clean lake water seems refreshing.

When you arrive, you see your boat, battered but afloat, two men aboard. They're deep into the lake, quite far from you, and appear to be struggling. Soon, a huge alligator leaps from the water and crashes into the boat, splintering it further. It goes down. The two men are pulled down shortly thereafter. Nothing comes back up.

To the south, you see a shadowed mass on the other side of the lake. It had a squarish look but it's just jungle. An overgrown wall of fortress perhaps?
Dec 18, 2020 4:06 am
"There aren't many options here," Cur says. "Go back the way we came, or head for that thing that might be shelter over there. What do you say?"
Dec 18, 2020 11:03 am
"Go back, empty-handed? No. Let's see what lies ahead, and may Crom smile upon our tenacity, Cur"
Dec 19, 2020 6:24 pm
Better to die like a man than live as a craven! Let's go forward!
Dec 19, 2020 10:51 pm
You head for the jungle structure, maybe just a vine covered cliff for all you know, with a wary eye on the lake. Huge predators lurk there, and the kind that could snatch one of the land.

Let's make Awareness(Survival) rolls to navigate the jungle and maybe find food on the way.
Dec 19, 2020 11:05 pm
OOC:
Survival TN = 10
Jarik trains his ears for any noise that might indicate threat, and his eyes scan the thickening tangle of jungle foilage for food.

Rolls

Awareness(Survival) roll - (2d20)

(174) = 21

Dec 20, 2020 12:44 pm
OOC:
Just to review, Jarik has Awareness 9, and Expertise
and Focus of 1 for Survival. His TN is this stat+expertise=10. The Focus of 1 gives him a critical range (1). So every d20 rolled under his TN is a success. If he rolled a 1 it would count as two successes. In this case he gets one success for the 4.
Jarik finds a safe path through the jungle around the lake.
Dec 20, 2020 4:15 pm
Roderigo looks around for the best route to follow.

I think this is two successes so Roderigo hopefully can identify a path through the thickets.

While you trek, Roderigo and Jarik choosing your path with some efficiency, you also manage to find a fruit tree. A few quick tests tell you that the heir are not poisonous and are both edible and delicious.

You make your way to the verdant wall and find that it is indeed a wall guarding the lake. It becomes clear that the lake is a vast jungle lake encircling a single great island upon which squats the vine-covered bulk of lost Zukundu of which Otawla spoke. You see glints from roofs, towers, and minarets, finished in metal, above the tops of the overgrown, vine-encrusted stone walls.

You also discover a few dugout canoes, pulled up on shore near the outer wall.
Dec 21, 2020 4:24 am
"Chances are we're not alone," Cur says to the others. "Be sharp, because we might be being watched already. We should press on though because we can't stay out in the open."
Dec 22, 2020 3:50 pm
OOC:
Sorry for the delay, some health issues.
"If they have already seen us, does approaching in stealth do us any favors?" Odan crouched, squinting towards the canoes, seeing if he could discern their make and sophistication, and any tools that may lay about them to suggest if they were local fishers or adventurers such as they - and perhaps how long they had lain.
Dec 25, 2020 8:01 pm
"I agree , let us make our way towards the canoes and see if anyone bars our way!"
Dec 31, 2020 4:08 am
OOC:
I'm going to advance us to a better spot, and narrate the journey.
On the island, you saw glints from roofs, towers, and minarets, finished in metal, above the tops of the overgrown, vine-encrusted stone walls. You find the dugout canoes and manage one large enough for your horse, once you convince it to enter the craft and kneel. You attempt to cross the treacherous waters.

Oversized reptiles from prehistory soon erupt from the waters of the lake to attack you. Barely evading the scaly giants, you then reach the overgrown island, clambering up the vine-draped stone walls to escape the cavernous snapping maws below.

You easily scale the walls into the enclosed space of the city-palace, down through the canopy of trees on the other side, and into the darkened levels of Zukundu proper. Wet, hungry, and battered, they find themselves in a section of the city-palace unclaimed by any tribes. The only light comes from the ever-present green star-fruit. An old vine trap, triggered by their footsteps, goes off and narrowly misses you as it drops a ton of masonry behind you.

You quickly notice the fine — if aged — construction of the labyrinthine halls and chambers beneath the rampant plant growth and the amount of semi-precious stones and metals used in the site’s construction. If only you had the wherewithal to pry the valuable materials free and cart them off in great quantities, you could live like royalty.

In a courtyard choked with succulent creepers and dark overhanging trees, a beheaded female corpse lands wetly at your feet. Across the courtyard a great shaggy, colorful shape, more beast than man, bellows balefully and lopes away into the undergrowth. The creature grips something head-shaped in one mighty claw.

The suddenness of everything that transpired catches Cur off-guard. He gawks with his mouth open at the scene before and can stare stupefied at the ape-thing escaping into the forest. The body nearby brings him back to his sense and reminds him that it could be him dying at any moment.

"I don't know if it's a good idea, but we can't stay here. It's obviously not safe," Cur says pointing at the headless corpse.
Jan 5, 2021 5:02 am
OOC:
....Any idea where these canoes came from?
"You would chase a beast who tore the head from a woman's shoulders into unknown lands? Brave." Odan took a few careful steps forwards, eyeing his periphery as he approached the corpse to examine it. Aside from pocketing its valuables, its clothes and accoutrements might reveal something of this place...
Jan 5, 2021 9:47 am
The canoes seemed like they were local, made from local trees, anyway.

The body wears a number of small golden trinkets. It's dark skinned like much of the inhabitants of the area. You could make a Challenging (D2) Observation test to learn more about the body.
Jan 5, 2021 5:41 pm
Shuddering slightly despite himself, Roderigo says "The treasure - that is what we are here for, let us find something we can take away with us!"
Jan 6, 2021 2:50 am
"Sure, treasure," says Cur flatly. "It's no good to us if we're dead. We should still search around though. There's got to be a way in and out that isn't over the wall. How did this body get here?"
Jan 6, 2021 3:39 am
"Aiiee! Outsiders! They have slain sweet Dako!" Their language shares roots with Kushite so Roderigo and Jarik understand, and Odan picks up the gist from similarities to Stygian.

Suddenly, six tribesmen of similar dress as the body arrive from another direction. They seem to have drawn the conclusion that you are the killers.
Jan 6, 2021 3:53 pm
Roderigo draws his Cutlass and says "Your woman was killed by some kind of abomination - it went that way!" he points
Jan 6, 2021 4:10 pm
They clearly don't believe you. They're defensive, have their spears aimed at you and move to check the girl and her wounds. They grow even more excited and suspicious when they see the manner of her departure. "Murder!" They fearfully begin to edge away from you.

You can attempt a Persuade (D4) test to calm them.
Jan 6, 2021 10:21 pm
"Check the wound, tribesman. No blade of man did this to your kinswoman"

Jarik then explains what is happening to the non-Kushite speaking party members

None of you have examined the wound in detail, and so you don't actually know how the head was remove, but you are failing to persuade the tribesmen.

You can still attempt a Persuade (D4) test to calm them.

Okay, so Cur's Personality trait is 8, plus you add his Expertise in Persuade, which is 0. So your target number is 8. So the 17 fails, but the 8 is a success. You needed 4 successes (D4, or Difficulty 4). How might you get 4 successes on 2d20? You can't, that is Cur can't.

Now if you had points in Persuade, that would give you a critical range. Of for Focus is 3 in a skill, for example, then any 3 or less you roll counts as two successes.

You can also get more dice, up to a maximum of 5d20. Giving the GM a "Doom" point gains you an extra d20 for each Doom so given. Spending accumulated Momentum gives you an extra d20 for each one spent.
Would anyone else like to try?

Rolls

Command roll - (2D20)

(61) = 7

Jan 10, 2021 2:12 pm
OOC:
Three successes. Command is Personality based, so your target is 9 (8 personally +1 Command). Further, you have a critical range of 1 (the +1 Focus in Command). So the 6 counts as 1 success, and the 1 counts as two, for a total of three.

When we add Cur's one success, as a team effort, you have reached the required 4-success difficulty.
The patrol relaxes their guard. They don't trust you yet, obviously, but they look at the body with you. With a group examination, you determine that determine that the head was torn off by something large, curved, and sharp such as the beast’s claws. They point at the scimitar which they though had made the cut, but agree that it it's too ragged for steel.

Shortly, bold Zyanya bursts through the undergrowth and calls off the patrol’s inquiries. She explains that she "came upon the Feathered Ape carrying the bloody head of their comrade, Dako, and gave chase, but soon lost sight of it in the branches of the trees some chambers distant."
Jan 12, 2021 4:08 am
"Yeah, well, my apologies for your commrade, but I'm happy that whatever took her head is over there, and not here," Cur says. "Do you have any idea of what could have done that? Is there more than one?"
Jan 12, 2021 4:13 am
The tribespeople are calming down, buoyed by your reasonableness and the assurance that you're not immediately threatening.

A brief parlay with Zyanya and the patrol reveals that "This is the city-palace of Zukundu, home to the Xhotatse tribe and others" (at this, the warriors spit with disdain). They also tell you that some of their tribe folk were killed in this gruesome fashion, evidently by the fabled Feathered Ape.

Zyanya can offer only a fleeting description: "It is a nightmarish beast. Larger than any man, with gaudy feathers sprouting among its fur."
Jan 12, 2021 4:55 pm
"I think that I'd have to agree with you that it sounds awful," says Cur. "We were in search of shelter when we arrived here. The rains washed our boat away. Is there a settlement nearby where we can rest?"
OOC:
I'm not trying to speak on behalf of the group, but just keeping the conversation going.
Jan 12, 2021 5:01 pm
OOC:
We are all too polite, @Cur - speak for the group! :-)
Jan 12, 2021 8:48 pm
OOC:

Jan 12, 2021 9:04 pm
Zyanya opens her mouth to reply when suddenly, the patrol and your group all come under fire from arrows! Three archers are on a balcony overlooking the courtyard you're in, gleefully going for blood.

There is no obvious cover, other than running away from them, or pressing up against the wall underneath their low balcony, but if they leaned over they could plug you.

You can reach them with your whip from below, so you could move and attack in the same round.
Jan 13, 2021 7:25 pm
Roderigo shouts " Shoot at us you dunghill dogs! I'll make you pay for this insult" and leaps up to the balcony to attack them.

Wow, you roll 2 20s, and then they roll 2 1s against you. Since they have a 1 expertise in combat, those 1s count double, so 4 successes. 1 success to but, 3 hummus successes as Momentum and added as damage dice.

Total damage 5+Effect (Hidden 1, Parrying, Thrown, Unforgiving 1). Checking got location and armor. Another 1, that's the head. Jarik had no armor on the head, so takes 5 Stress to his Vigor, and 1 Harm.

Your Agility is 10 and your Melee is 3 expertise so your TN is 13. The 14 is a miss, the 13 is a success. The focus of 3 means that rolling a 3 or less would count double.

For shorthand, your Melee skill is 13(3) - 13 TN, with focus of 3.

Roderigo does 3 damage and an effect. Vicious 1 turns that effect into +1 damage, so that's 4. Armor drops that to 2.

This sort of improvised attack is handled by Brawn(Athletics). Your skill is 10(1), so that is three successes (the Nat 1 triggers double on your Focus of 1).

This is a basic strike with any body part, or whatever object comes to hand. An Unarmed/Improvised Strike is the basic attack for a Melee or Ranged attack. It has a Reach of 1, and inflicts 2§ damage and includes the Improvised, Stun, and Thrown Qualities. As it literally represents whatever the character can bring to hand, there is no limit to the number of shots the character has when making a Ranged attack — the character is assumed to grab a rock or other small, hard object as part of the attack. The two archers, both of whom are outnumbered, and one of whom is beaten pretty badly, throw down their weapons, fall to their knees and beg for mercy with no shame.

Below you, the friendly tribesman are ready to shoot down either if they flee.

You're up.

Cur jumps in the way of the defeated archers, and shouts out, "Wait!" He throws his hands up and makes sure that he's continuing the bloodshed, at least for now. "We should interrogate these fools before killing them."
Feb 15, 2021 12:59 am
The friendly villagers assure you they're in agreement with your plan, and only mean to shoot them if they get away from you.

In their near language, one asks, "Ask them why they break peace!"
Feb 15, 2021 4:54 pm
Roderigo says (in Kushite) "Why did you attack us? you worthless dogs!"
Feb 19, 2021 1:44 pm
You notice when getting close, that these other warriors, the Mekutu, have distinctive "long smiles" — eerily broad mouths which are ritually sliced wide upon reaching adulthood.

They stare in hatred at the Xhotatse, your allies. An argument breaks out and the Xhotatse quickly execute the prisoners, before you can stop them.

"They attacked us because we are enemies. They are evil and torture and kill any they can."

The Xhotatse patrol recognizes what an advantage you as outsiders could provide them. Your skill in battle amply demonstrated. The tribe swiftly invites, even begs you to accompany them back to the safety of the Ebony Keep of the Xhotatse to meet their ruler, "wise" Queen Chitaka.
Feb 19, 2021 5:45 pm
See the prisoners executed so brutally, Cur says nothing, but laments the scene before him grimly.

Turning to the others, Cur says, "I think we should accept, for now. It may help us in the short-term, but we should probably keep our guard up, at the very least. The speed with which they killed the captives is fairly telling, don't you think?"
Feb 20, 2021 4:30 pm
Roderigo nods and says "We cannot trust these savages, I agree but let us meet their Queen, we have nothing to lose and might discover something to our advantage".
Feb 21, 2021 4:07 am
The Xhotatse patrol leads you along darkened, crumbling corridors and overgrown gardens, occasionally stepping over, or ducking warily under, trip wires for dart traps and vine snares. Soon, they are care-fully picking their way through the camouflaged lion pits guarding the approach to the Ebony Keep of the Xhotatse.

"Tread carefully. Do not stray from our path."

The patrol does not willingly explain to you why you are being directed on a strangely winding path, often ignoring what appears to be the most obvious and direct path.
Feb 21, 2021 6:55 pm
Confused by the route taken, Jarik siddles up to a Xhotatse warrior and says in Kushite, "where I come from, the say the shortest path is the straight one. Why do we take this meandering way to your Queen?"
Feb 22, 2021 4:16 am
Cur remains silent doing his best to note the route they've taken. "If they've made this effort on purpose, then it was certainly for a reason. It would be a good idea if I could retrace their steps if needed," he thinks to himself

"See the mighty outsiders, come to aid us!"

The Ebony Keep is much too large for the small crowd that has gathered there.

Zyanya, a member of the patrol, lets the queen know of the outsiders’ arrival, leaving you and the rest of the patrol to wait briefly in a wide, shady chamber overshadowed by a variety of thick, looping vines.

A large ornamental pond stretches completely across one side of the shady chamber. A small dark archway, the only entrance to the Xhotatse treasure hoard, stands in the wall beyond the pond. The pond is not deep, and attractive lily pads float on the surface. It looks quite beautiful and peaceful, but is, in fact, home to a shoal of pretty, yet voracious, saber fish, which the Xhotatse keep as decorative pets, as well as a means of stripping bodies of dead enemies down to skeletons in seconds.

A group of small Xhotatse children race into the shady chamber, chasing a small monkey. They shout that they have "caught the Feathered Ape!" The monkey scampers up a vine and skitters over the pond but quickly falls from a slippery vine and, with a squeak, falls into the water. In seconds the pond froths with unseen fury as the saber fish swarm around the hapless monkey and strip it down to a tiny skeleton before your eyes. The children shriek with distress at the creature’s horrific fate.

Another tough roll. Moving on.
Led into a richly furnished throne room in the heart of the keep, you find yourselves in a grand room decorated with golden mirrors, carved ivory, and exotic potted flowers. Before you sits beautiful, serene Queen Chitaka, bedecked in many fine jewels and golden trinkets. Her aged advisor, Inokwu, stands to one side, whispering in her ear from behind a feathered fan. Speaking on behalf of the queen, who remains silent but smiling throughout, Inokwu greets you.
"Queen Chitaka welcomes you to the Ebony Keep, honored visitors. Lifetimes have passed since outsiders have come to great Zukundu."

Inokwu relates a little of the layout, wildlife, and ecology of Zukundu.

OOC:
A lot of talky bits skipped here, but we'll just move on.
He also freely relates that the Feathered Ape was thought to be a legend until these recent attacks upon the Xhotatse. He implores them to help the embattled (and under-manned) Xhotatse track and destroy the terrible Feathered Ape that has taken the heads of their people:

"Our queen bids you hunt this beast. Find it and slay it. And bring back its corpse that we may stack its monstrous bones atop the walls of the Ebony Keep for all to see!"

Zyanya and the other Xhotatse in the throne room stamp their feet and cry out at this with glee, the fires of vengeance flickering in their eyes. The queen herself begins to clap daintily with girlish excitement before Inokwu motions for her to maintain her composure.
Mar 10, 2021 9:14 pm
Jarik looks around his companions. Brought together by one man, no longer here. Headless, voiceless. At last, he overcomes his retience and addresses the Queen

"your majesty, we are honoured to serve you. But majesty, pray tell, what bounty shall be ours if we do as you bid?"
Mar 10, 2021 9:35 pm
Inokwu offers you payment for your trouble. He instructs a Xhotatse tribesman to "Fetch some trinkets from across the pond". The tribesman duly races off to the treasure hoard and returns minutes later with a few small items of precious gold and ivory jewelry about his neck, which Inokwu casually but sincerely offers to the player characters.

"Please take these. There is more if you do this service for the Xhotatse."
Mar 11, 2021 3:45 am
"That promises to be quite a bounty," Cur says "but we'd like to discuss a bit before we agree." He calls the others over, and whispers, "an entire village is fearful of this thing. What are we going to do about it? Can we actually accept this?"
Mar 11, 2021 11:47 am
"What is our alternative, Cur? We came here looking for treasure, whatever treasure means to each of you, and we lost our treasure guide. But we didn’t turn back, we carried on. Why? Because we still want that treasure. The thing about this village, is that they have built this ‘feathered ape’ into some kind of mythological beast that has defeated them in their heads and hearts before they have laid eyes upon it. We are not so denuded, are we? Let’s kill this thing and take the treasure."

Jarik’s eyes fall upon the Queen once more and he adds, idly, "there is treasure and there is treasure"
Mar 12, 2021 3:27 am
"Yes, you're correct, but I also feel like we're being roped into something here that is more about dealing with that ape than it is about us getting paid," says Cur. "I guess you're right. We survived a flood, a single feathered ape should be comparable, I hope."
Mar 12, 2021 9:27 am
Roderigo nods "I agree with Jarik, It is an ape with feathers, we kill it and get the treasure, and gain the good will of these people and their queen!"
Mar 12, 2021 2:24 pm
"OK, OK, we'll do it," Cur says throwing his hands up. "Better be worth it."
Mar 21, 2021 3:19 am
Speaking for the queen, Inokwu insists that you are accompanied by Xhotatse guides. The guides will be able to show you how to get to any part of the city-palace without falling prey to traps or natural obstacles. If you want another warrior, Tenbo can go with you, too.
Mar 21, 2021 11:45 am
Roderigo bows to the queen and takes his hat off with a flourish "Your Majesty, consider this ape dead as of now, we shall undertake this deed and return for our rewards!"
Mar 21, 2021 1:55 pm
Searching outside the Ebony Keep and the green corridors of Zukundu, it is hard at first to find any tracks of the Feathered Ape, but a smart thought leads to one of you asking their guides to lead them to scenes of earlier attacks.

There, with a Challenging (D2) Observation test, you might find tracks.

Cur spots the telltale marks made by its (metallic) claws in the soil, on trees, and even on flagstones.

The trail of the Feathered Ape leads your group to an area your guides have not visited in years. Through a greenhouse-like area with a particularly rich, musky scent they come upon a chamber where a single type of plant grows, covering the walls and floor quite thickly. A lone narrow path twists and undulates across from one door to the next.

The blooming plants are a rich, deep red, fat with moisture. The Xhotatse guides know nothing of this plant, stating only that is was not here when they last passed through years ago.

Indistinct shapes bulging out under the creeper on the walls and floor are human. Some are dry, long-dead husks, while others are skeletal near-mummies whose sunken eyes move so slowly it is hard to tell that they are still conscious. If examined, the Xhotatse guides can identify the victims by their distinctive elongated skulls as landless, "dreaming" Tangani.
Mar 27, 2021 8:42 pm
"Well, this is not what I expected to find," Cur says to the others. "I'm feeling fortunate our guides have not yet turned and fled so far. What do you make of it?"[/b] He turns to others and mulls the site around him.
Mar 28, 2021 3:52 pm
Jarik draws his sword and begins to hack at the creeper entombing the cadavers; "Here, do you know whose they people are?" he demands of the Xhotatse guides The reply comes quickly, and Jarik questions further - "What do know of the 'dreaming' Tangani?"
Mar 29, 2021 11:52 am
"I like this not"! snarls Rederigo, "were we brought here to be the next victims!" with that he joins Jarik in hacking away at the creepers.
Mar 29, 2021 1:05 pm
The red creeper does not give up its food easily. As soon as any embedded tendrils are disturbed, the red creeper begins to writhe and defend itself! Tiny red tendrils reach out to ensnare and trip anyone in the area.

Tenbo, your warrior guide, slashes with his spear, too, trying to defend you from the crazy plant, but misses.

The vines (Red Creeper) had no Soak, and Vigor 14. Each damage reduces it's stress (Vigor) by 1.

Jarik does 1.
Roderigo does 2 with 2 effects (Vicious 1 means 2 more damage).
Cur does 2.

So the Red Creeper takes 7 from the three attacks.

It lashes out at Jarik, the first to attack. It does 6 damage (reduce by your armor/soak), plus two stun damage and has grappled you.

Jarik is unable to do any actions except Acrobatics or Athletics (D2) to get free. Further, he is Staggered (until the end of his next turn) from the stinging poison of the plant, and so would have to spend a Doom to do try and break free.

The creeper vines have burrowed into their skin. The captive Tangani once freed, are incredibly feeble and near death, but could be saved by determined and skilled healing arts. They are all but incapable of speech and terrified of both their Xhotatse enemies and the strange people you are.
Apr 23, 2021 2:24 am

Apr 23, 2021 11:12 pm
The Xhotatse guide, Tembo, shakes his head. "They very crazy animal." He's pointing at the rival tribesmen.

You could make an Alchemy check. Quite difficult, but possible.
Apr 24, 2021 10:30 am
Roderigo makes a sign to ward off evil, "pah, I iike not this foul sorcery!" shaken at this uncanny turn of events he tries not to show it. "Let us move forward!" turning to the others - "remember gold and treasure is what we're here for!"
Apr 24, 2021 8:11 pm
"Roderigo, shouldn't we at least put them out of their misery? We can't leave them just to rot"

Jarik draws his blade, looking from it to the captive Tangani and back again; hHe hesitates, not knowing what to do.
Apr 24, 2021 8:23 pm
Driven to the point of insanity, one pathetically attempts to draw his rusting dagger and stab weakly at Jarik, but it's easily avoided.

The Xhotatse warrior guide Tenbo pulls his own blade and with hatred, will kill them both. Do you stop him?
Apr 24, 2021 8:26 pm
Jarik pulls away from the flailing dagger. As the Tenbo guide draws his blade, Jarik sheaths his own and walks away.
OOC:
No, I won't stop him
Apr 25, 2021 12:51 am
Cur quietly watches the scene unfold, and takes note of how little provocation was necessary for their guide to a draw blade in search of blood.
May 1, 2021 1:58 pm
Tembo then explains a little. The Tangani are known as the "dreaming" tribe because of their fondness for certain strange herbs and drugs which they grow and consume in great quantities. They are crazy and attack the other tribes for no reason.

Then, the bellow of the Feathered Ape leads your hunting party through the lush, dark chambers and thickets of Zukundu. At last you spy the bestial killer at a distance — the fearsome Feathered Ape! It just murdered and beheaded a Xhotatse fruit gatherer who wandered too far from the protective walls of the Ebony Keep.

The Feathered Ape is an unnatural, nightmarish monster. Far larger than a man, its posture is stooped, like a gorilla making mock of a man. From its powerful chest protrude thick, overlong arms. Both its hands and feet are tipped with gleaming red claws. Most strikingly, its hairy simian hide is interspersed with gaudy colored feathers. Small, cunning eyes gleam from sockets set deep within a great brutish head.

It dashes off. You can make a Dire (D4) Athletics test to try and close the gap, but you might become spreadout with the faster if you outdisdancing the slower.
May 1, 2021 7:05 pm
"Crom's teeth!", Jarik exclaims, "have you ever set eyes upon such a creature?"

Could we just try and track it, rather than keeping pace?
"Agreed," says Cur. "I doubt we'd find more than stories about creatures like this anywhere else we might travel. It's hide would be worth a fortune, not that I'm convinced that trying to kill and skin it is a good idea."
May 3, 2021 12:43 pm
Choosing to stay together you race off after the feathered ape across the city-palace.
Tembo says at one point, "We are entering the Mekutu territory. It is forbidden," but he continues with you.

You follow the ape into the ruins of a great stone arena, constructed of pillars and arches checking a large dark pit. The pit looks deep and cluttered with collapsed masonry and vines. A great fallen tree spans its length. It is to dark to see the bottom.

The ape nimbly skips along the great fallen tree, it rocks precariously but its claws give it purchase.

A Daunting (D3) Agility test or Challenging (D2) Acrobatics test is required to cross the shaking tree without falling.
May 3, 2021 10:44 pm
"It's madness to try and play that ape-thing at it's own game. We need to lure it out onto open ground. What say you?"
May 4, 2021 2:11 am
"I agree whole-heartedly," says Cur. "Do we have any idea what might work as bait though?"
May 4, 2021 4:22 am
You can take your time, cross safely and try and track it. It seems to be leaving a trail of broken vegetation.
May 5, 2021 2:22 am
Perhaps we can follow at our pace, as long as the weather holds up the tracks should stay fairly obvious.
May 6, 2021 9:38 pm
"Yes, Cur, I agree"
May 10, 2021 2:04 am
You take your time and cross the log slowly. It rocks precariously and you sense the snarls of some predator trapped at the bottom. One by one you cross safely.

The Feathered Ape takes advantage of the delay to make good its escape, leaving a trail that leads to the nearby Jade Keep of the Mekutu.

The approach to the keep is uneventful, but eerily quiet. Tembo tells you that the leader of the Mekutu tribe, Khenaton, is immortal; he is centuries old.

On the edge of the killing ground before the Jade Keep of the Mekutu, the player characters discover Xhotatse severed heads displayed ominously. The heads bob and jerk in a large jade ornamental fountain fed by a natural spring. The fountain has carvings of a strange androgynous face, repeated around the basin. Above this face are the ornate words: "For the Pleasure of Khenaton" in the language of Zukundu, readable to anyone who can read Stygian.

The disembodied heads and rictus grins whirl and careen in a hideous, blackly comic fashion. The Xhotatse guide spits with rage.

"The insult is plain! We must revenge ourselves on the foul Mekutu!"

The guide Tembo urges you to find a way into the Jade Keep immediately and take their revenge on the vile Mekutu.
May 10, 2021 1:39 pm
"Tembo, stay calm, please. You will have your revenge. But we need to be prepared. What can you tell us on the Mekutu? Are they warriors, what weapons do they use, anything you can share might be important"
May 11, 2021 4:00 am
Cur takes in the area, and looks around for signs of foot traffic.
OOC:
Let me know if you want me to roll for this, or if there are areas that are obviously heavily used by people.
May 11, 2021 12:20 pm
Tembo tells you that the Mekutu are the "unholy" tribe, possessing strange artifacts and monstrous creatures. All adults have distinctive "long smiles" — eerily broad mouths which are ritually sliced wide upon reaching adulthood. They are as savage in battle as the Xhotatse, but more inclined to torture captives to death rather than simply executing them.

https://i.imgur.com/OZDtYUX.jpg

A flat, open killing ground around the keep is clear of vegetation, though littered with the rotting, arrow-stuck skeletons of past attackers. Crude arrow holes adorn the high, jade walls high of the fortification. Anyone crossing the killing ground and approaching the door to the keep will be visible to the keep’s defenders. Barely-glimpsed Mekutu guards, safely ensconced up high behind the keep’s jade arrow holes, can easily fire down at anyone venturing into the killing ground and approaching the door.
May 12, 2021 2:20 am
"Someone want to go and knock to see if they just let us in?" Cur asks the others sarcastically. "I can't imagine our quarry has fallen in with whoever sits behind that wall, but I suspect we can't get a full story if we don't talk to them. Suggestions?"
May 12, 2021 9:25 pm
"This is madness! All the gold in the world isn't worth spit to a deadman.". Turning to Tembo once more, Jarik asks, "any suggestions?"
May 13, 2021 12:13 am
"Tembo not know."

Together, you deduce that:
- the jade walls of the keep are both high and smooth, save for the small arrow holes and securely-shuttered windows several floors up, there is no way to climb in here. The keep's walls are too far from any trees to cross over, and there is no access within fro the smoothly sloping roof.

The killing ground seems a poor choice.

You can see that there are side chambers outside the killing ground. Whether these provide an alternate route, you cannot tell from without.
May 20, 2021 11:57 pm
"Well, let's be about it, or else go home. Seems to me we're going to have to try the side chambers. Anyone have a better idea?"

May 22, 2021 11:50 am
You search the side chambers outside the killing ground and find a darkened stairwell leading down into the Jade Keep. Footprints reveal regular traffic in the area. The stairwell leads straight down for some distance and then levels off, continuing as a stone passage. Clumps of rotting star-fruit — left by passing tribespeople — hang from crude iron hooks at irregular intervals, lighting the passageway with patches of faltering, eerie green luminescence interspersed by long expanses of darkness. The passage ends at an iron-barred gate with a latch that is easily unlocked by humans. An unpleasant stench wafts from beyond, a mixture of meat and dung. An Average (D1) Animal Handling test or a Challenging (D2) Survival test might tell you more about the scent. It is strangely chilly down here too.

May 29, 2021 3:25 pm
The rough cave tunnel gives up its secrets but uneasily. After a few minutes you hear and see nothing from beyond the gate. Eventually, you push it open and enter.

In the cave beyond as you get closer, you see it lying coiled in the strangely cool cave. It moves slightly at your approach. Monstrous and serpentine, its two great fangs protrude from the upper jaw. Strangely, it also exude an unnatural chill noticeable to anyone in close proximity. It is large enough to swallow a deer, or a man. Then you see another. Maybe a third beyond that.

Do you want to try and fight it, or sneak past *?

* Humans picking their way through the chill, serpentine bodies must make a Challenging (D2) Animal Handling test or an Average (D1) Stealth test to avoid rousing the creatures.

You wait for awhile, uncertain how to proceed, when you hear an unusual fluting. The melody is unfamiliar, strange, yet definitely repeats. A light comes from the left. The flautist has a torch, and is somehow making their way through the cave of horrors toward you. And not being eaten.

What do you do?

Confused, uncertain of what to do next, afraid maybe, Jarik finds words pour out of his mouth involuntarily - "Hail! Stranger. Who is it that serenades us with such sweet music?. And, also involuntarily, Jarik’s hand begins to caress the hilt of his sword
Jun 8, 2021 12:53 pm
Cur waits silently, as Jarik attempts to chat with the musician. He tries to do his best to make sure that his body language is under control, and that he's not presenting himself in an aggressive manner. "Best not to provoke a fight here, next to those things," he thinks to himself.
Jun 9, 2021 1:43 am
A single Mekutu woman slowly emerges out of the darkness, a clump of star-fruit strung from her neck. She plays her bone pipes to pass the crawlers unscathed. She spies you and your strange manner of dress.

When you speak, she seems ready to keep playing, but tenses as of for a conflict. Jarek's words are kind, though, and she pauses whatever she was about to do.

"Who are you to come into the Crawling Caves unwelcome?"
Jun 9, 2021 7:49 pm
Jarik bows his head slighty and the says, "forgive us, my lady, we did not mean to trespass. We are sent to hunt a murderous feathered ape who has been terrorising the people of these lands. I am Jarik, these are my compatriots", Jarik gestures towards his party.

"You are strangers. I have not seen your like before. That one is my enemy. The feathered ape is not down here, now go."

She is uncertain about you, and takes a strong opening position, but your words have given her pause.

She may reconsider with a good roll. Remember you can spend Doom to get an extra d20 on a roll.

"Please, my lady, tarry with us a while, it would be an honour to learn more about you and your land. In this way, we will be less likely to trespass or in some other way offend you in the future. We mean you no harm. I will lay my weapon down if this will demonstrate our good will to your satisfaction".

Jarik's hand leaves the hilt of the sword and his arms sweep outwards in a gesture of openness and supplication.

She rethink her initial instinct to attack. Anyone else want to add...

Nevermind, this whole cave thing was poorly written haha.
You gently convince her that you're here to help. After requesting that you don't slaughter her people, she uses her flute to lead you through the Crawler Caves to a set of stairs up into the keep.

Constructed largely of a sickly green jade, the interior of the keep is polished to a smooth finish and sometimes carved in strange sinuous patterns, perhaps emulating the forms of the Mekutu’s pet crawlers. Slowly rotting clumps of star-fruit deposited at intervals along the passages provide erratic light to the chamber. Filth and clutter litter the floor.

The stench from the Crawling Caves below gradually blends and then disappears under the heavy, sweet incense that burns in bowls throughout the keep. This incense is mildly disorienting and may affect your ability to sense direction and aim. Each of you must make a Challenging (D2) Resistance test when you first breathe the incense.

Cur can't get the smell from his nose. (One minor step penalty to Awareness and Coordination rolls while you are inside the Keep.)

Withered corpses, impaled on great timber posts bolted to the walls, punctuate the halls and corridors. The corpses bear the marks of torture and mutilation. Some corpses are recognizable to the Xhotatse guides as lost beloved kinfolk, while others bear the telltale elongated skulls of the lowly Tangani.

There are even a few widely-smiling Mekutu corpses on display, victims of their sadistic ruler’s cruel, mercurial moods. One body, not long dead, bears curious small bite marks all over its body. Partly healed, they look as if some-thing repeatedly chewed on the victim while still alive. Whatever creature ate the victim, it has a mouth similar to, but much smaller than, the crawlers down in the caves.

Grisly furnishings — divans upholstered in strange cured hides, glass cabinets of long-mummified heads, great stuffed crawlers arranged in lifelike rearing poses — litter the passageways, chambers, and cells of the Jade Keep, lending the entire structure a gruesome, horrific air.

By the number of long unused sleeping quarters and cells in the keep, that the number of the Mekutu have dwindled from what they once were.

You leave the area having found no trace of the Feathered Ape and unwilling to search the enemy occupied Jade Keep with no evidence it's here.

You find your way out, easier from the inside and get free of the killing zone. You have little time to ponder matters further as, suddenly, a grievously injured Xhotatsan runner stumbles into the area and, dying of his wounds, gasps:

"The Ebony Keep *… under attack! The Ape! Save the Queen from the Feathered Ape!"

* The Ebony Keep is where you meet the Xhotatse queen.

You race back through the vine-choked chambers of the city-palace heading straight for the terri-tory of their Xhotatse allies. As they near the Ebony Keep, they see that the hidden lion pits have been uncovered, the concealing vegetation, leaves and twigs kicked aside. There is no need for you to carefully pick your way through the Path of Skulls.

There are fresh corpses in some of the lion pits, bearing the distinctive elongated skulls of the "dreaming" tribe, the Tangani. All are impaled on the nasty wooden stakes lining the pits, but one Tangani is incredibly still alive! Despite a huge wooden stake sticking up through his stomach, which he doesn’t seem to feel, the man gnashes his teeth and coughs up a great plume of blood as he claws uselessly up at those of you above. Then he slumps back, dead of his terrible injury.

The fallen Tangani wear small bloodied darts on cords about their necks. A successful test also reveals a small amount of syrupy substance coating a tiny puncture wounds in their chests.

Reaching the Ebony Keep of the Xhotatse, you find the bronze Door of the Elephant unbarred and thrown open, and the black walls of the keep partially aflame. A rough line of fresh, deep gouges leads up and over the ebony wall. The gouges resemble the claw marks left by the Feathered Ape. Bodies of the guards lie just within the gates, their heads torn from their bodies in the manner of the Ape’s victims. You likely deduce that the Ape climbed up over the ebony walls, slew the guards, and opened the gates from within the keep.

Inside the smoking keep, bodies of the Xhotatse, old and young alike, lie everywhere, slain by spear or poisoned blowpipe darts, or beheaded like the guards at the door. A single dead Tangani warrior lies among the bodies, slain by several spears still embedded in her limbs and torso. A close examination reveals a syrupy puncture mark in her chest. Sounds of battle — screams, bestial howls, the clash of weapons and a chillingly familiar bellow — are heard deeper into the keep in the direction of the throne room of Queen Chitaka.

A small figure lies in a pool of its own blood in the middle of a broad passage that leads to the throne room. It is old Inokwu, a terrible clawed wound in his side (delivered by the Feathered Ape). A thick trail of his blood glistens behind him. He looks up at the player characters with dimming eyes.

"Madmen! They came so suddenly. Led by the beast itself. That clever woman at his heels. Fighting like demons, caring nothing for their own lives. The ‘dreaming’ tribe. Pah!"

He coughs up a great deal of blood and makes a dying request.

"You outsiders, you must save her, my dear innocent Chitaka. She has the mind of child."

"Or die trying!" Cur says realizing this might have been a doomed venture, but only the most cowardly would run now. He looks to see if there's a clear path to follow and trying to get a read on the environment if the fight were to be brought here.
Jul 24, 2021 4:02 am
Following the sounds of battle and the trail of Inokwu’s blood, you reach the large shady chamber with the pond of saber fish beyond which lies the throne room. It is much changed from before. A howling pack of berserk Tangani press hard to overwhelm a knot of embattled Xhotatse warriors who erected a makeshift barricade at the far end closest to the throne room. Bodies of slain warriors from both sides litter the bloody floor.

You spot young Jambi, the eager Xhotatse youth, among the desperate defenders. He, like the others, cannot hope to hold out for long. There is no sign of Queen Chitaka who must be in the relative safety of the throne room.

At the head of the Tangani pack is the unmistakable form of the Feathered Ape. With a bellow, its great metallic claws rip a screaming Xhotatse warrior from the barricade and toss him to the baying Tangani to be torn apart. To one side of the melee, near the ornamental pond, stands a Tangani woman who urges the Ape and the berserkers on to victory. Then, she spots the newcomers and reveals a little of her great plan.

"See, my brother! The outsiders have come to witness our triumph! Did you slay the degenerate Khenaton and his inbred spawn for us, fools? A pity you did not take more of these Xhotatse dogs along to die."

The Feathered Ape breaks off its attack against the Xhotatse barricade and muscles back to stand protectively at the side of Anepor as she exchanges heated words with you.

"Oh, these proud, glittering Xhotatse! See how they have paid for laying our forebears low. They and the filthy Mekutu! Now, Azar, my brother, my prince, send these interfering fools to hell and let us take this keep’s treasures and all of Zukundu as our own!"

At this, the Feathered Ape removes his exotic simian headpiece with a mocking laugh, to reveal the handsome face of Anepor’s brother Prince Azar. He sketches a warrior’s bow to the player characters and speaks in a voice as educated as his sister.

"Ho, you bold fellows! I rejoice to see you yet live. I enjoyed our earlier games of hunt and hide across the city-palace, but confessed to my sister Anepor here that I feared missing my chance to pit the Claws of the Ape against you in combat. I look forward to tearing your outsider heads from your necks."

Prince Azar, the Feathered Ape, leaps forward to do battle with you accompanied by a group of 5 berserker Tangani. He uses speed and agility to move around the combat, rarely trading blows toe to toe for long. The berserk Tangani accompanying Azar make a wild, frontal assault, fighting to the death as will proud Azar, unwilling to let his sister’s carefully conceived plans fail at the last. Princess Anepor slips away.

Since they're charging you, I'll let you be prepared and act first before or after they enter melee range.

There is a barricade at the far end, with the defenders holding that. You could attempt to get past the attackers charging you that with a successful test.

As to the princess has snuck through the barricade to a passageway behind it, while the defenders were distracted. So you would also need to get to the barricade to chase her.

Grappling is simply rolling Effects on the damage roll with as arson that had the Grapple quality, such as a whip.

So you would make an attack roll. If you succeed, you can roll damage. Remember you can spend a Doom to get an extra d20 (rolling 3d20 instead of the normal 2d20).

The ape is on the ground, having been tripped by Cur. Roderigo gets right up to it, and attacks, striking for 7 damage. (1+6+6 = 3 plus 2 effects for the 6s, Cutlass has Vicious 1, so each effect does +1 damage, plus two Momentum which will be just an extra +1 each damage). The ape costume that the person inside is wearing (gasp!) provides 3 soak, so he takes 4 Stress.

Tenbo drives his spear into the ape as well... and hits, for 7 plus two effects (Piercing 1) which reduces soak by 1 each, so 7-1=6 net Stress. This also causes a Wound (5+ damage in one blow).

Feathered Ape: 10 Stress (17 max), 1 Wound

The ape, unbalanced by the attack, scrambles to its feet. The other warriors rush to support you, leaving you one on one with the ape.

You're all up again.

Let's just wrap this up, you're so close to the end.
A couple more stabs and the Feathered Ape dies. The warrior allies help you finish off the rest of the aggressors and you chase the enemy princess into the other room.

You find Princess Anepor, intent on taking hostage or murdering the helpless Queen Chitaka. With no way out the Xhotatse defenders agree that Anepor can leave as long as she leaves their queen unharmed. Princess Anepor, more inclined to self-preservation than her brother, Prince Azur, the man in the Feathered Ape costume, chooses to flee.

Queen Chitaka is alive and curled up on the throne crying like the child she truly is. She rushes forward to hug Cur, weeping with gratitude.
After securing the rest of the Keep, the Xhotatse will give you rich gifts and even escort you away from the city. The way home is long, you've lost many people and retainers on the way, but you will have an unbelievable story to tell.

If you survive the journey.
