Kazuyo approaches the guarded bridge keeping in step with a group of workers, with the demeanor and attire of a travelling woman sent by her House to visit the market or merchant house for groceries and ingredients, from a near village. She carries an empty basket to reinforce her narrative.

She will have prepared a cover story about it, namedropping pertinent neighboring villages and families' names, in case she is stopped and quizzed.

Unarmed and carrying nothing noteworthy the monk called White Teeth thought nothing of making some conversation with the guards on the bridge. He offered his nicest smile when approaching, waved to them and stopped about ten feet short of them. "May we all be well, happy and peaceful, May no harm come to us. Is there something the matter?" Ozunu Raizo nodded to the yari each guard carried. "A show of force to keep the peasants in check?" Though Ozunu had some reasons to suspect the increased security had something to do with their mission, he only had suspicion. Facts were what he operated from. His shrewd analytical mind had already noted several figures pass by the station and assumed they were just there to tally the comings and goings.

"Good for us. If they are watching the roads they aren't watching the caravans as tightly."

Nozomi approaches carefully, looking along the river for some way to cross without having to interact with the guards on the bridge, staying far enough away from the town to not be visible to all but the most astute observers.
OOC:
Nozomi has +14 in jump, so she's looking for maybe somewhere where the river is narrow, or there are rocks poking up and out that she can jump across.

Si, in his disguise as a worker carrying a hoe, is waved along as he crosses the bridge. Three of the guards do not pay him any mind, but one looks at him intently with his eyes focusing on the blue scarf. He is about to say something another of guards, when the group of them looks and points at a comely young travelling woman heading towards the bridge. They snicker and laugh a bit, with the one forgetting whatever he was about to say.

As Kazuyo approaches, one of the groups steps in her direct path apparently intent to block her way. He begins to say, "Where are you...." That's as far as he gets before the one more perceptive guard grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him back, shaking his head in disapproval. "Remember what Lord Akashi said." The first guard backs away, and they let the woman pass without further incident, although their leering eyes could make a modest woman uncomfortable.

This might have passed as the most memorable moment of the late afternoon, until the monk White Teeth stops before the guards offering his blessing and making conversation. The guards regard him warily. The apparently more senior guard from the back steps forward and speaks, "Blessings of the gods to you as well, monk. What is your name and what your purpose in coming to Minamiko?" He does seem a bit on edge.

Further down the river, Nozomi scouts the riverbank for an alternate place to cross than the bridge. The river's movement near the town is slow on account of its width and the numerous diversions into the irrigation channels around the farmlands. You have travelled two miles downriver at this point, and still you have yet to find a place that you could jump the river without getting wet confidently. It may be possible that such a spot exists even further downriver, but you can't be sure. What do you want to do?

Ozunu hadn't necessarily expected such friendly conversation to strike up. He saw no reason to lie about his future plans or his Chinese name. "Jiébái Yáchi. I am on pilgrimage to each of the Shinto shrines, I could smell your tea from over the hill and decided to make rest here and bathe. I must confess trepidation at the road ahead. Seeing such force disturbs even the serenity The Buddha has given me. Are the roads here that dangerous?"

Kazuyo keeps her eyes down to her feet, proceeds past the guards and crosses the bridge.
Lord Akashi, looks like your instructions just saved the life of that idiot, she thinks and preserved my cover.

She only looks up on the opposite side, taking in the sight. She will locate the first tea house and go in as agreed, avoiding other guards if she can.
She also looks out for any obvious signs of Clan Shibata presence, in the form of banners on houses, or distinctive kimono patterns from the Clan.

Tsk. Nozomi lets out a sigh as she casts her eyes along the river. As risky as a jump or swim may be, for her, it's quite possibly less risky than trying to talk her way past the guards.
OOC:
Is there anywhere I could make a high-DC check to jump? I've got a +14 to jump and a -1 to charisma so it seems like the least risky option. If not, Nozomi will probably head back and try to talk her way past.

The guard's eyes narrow a bit, scrutinizing Ozunu's words and facial expression. "We're here to keep the Lord's peace. Now move along...Jiébái Yáchi." He basically spits out the words of the foreign-sounding name. He steps aside and uses the butt of his spear to wave the monk through. The other guards follow his lead, and they shift their spears from a battle-ready two-handed grip to a resting position in one hand.

---

Kazuyo enters the tea house, passing by the three outdoor benches where some of the customers sit. It is a comfortable-looking local establishment with apparently a couple of separate rooms. A hostess greets Kazuyo at the door and beckons her to follow into the room to the right, "Welcome, honorable woman. Please come in, please follow me this way."

---

While Nozomi can't be sure that she will clear the river in a single leap, it isn't beyond her capabilities...on a good day. She was more inclined to try her physical prowess (+14 to jump!) than her verbal wits (-1 CHA) any day. Anyways, it didn't look like it was a river she would drown in even if she didn't quite make it. Without constructed embankments, she will just fall in and will have to swim the remaining distance. She would then be wet, but some water won't hurt her...at least physically.
OOC:
Go ahead and make a jump roll. This was actually kind of funny, as I had not really considered how wide the river would be. I had picture in my mind, but as I read back on my description, I see that there may have been some contradictory information in it. On the one hand, the slow-moving river was supposed to indicate that the river was somewhat safe to cross by other means but the rationale for it was also its width. On the other hand, the flat bridge meant that it wouldn't be so overly wide, as such structures cannot span sufficient distances without many multiple supports. All of this led me to just say that Nozomi's DC here is 30 to clear the 30-foot jump across the river and be essentially completely dry. A 25 would mean that she's landed knee deep in the water, and she will need to make a DC10 balance check to land. Fall or rolling 20 or less on jump, you aren't landing and will need to swim a bit (DC10). Keep in mind that you're also walking allow a foot path back to town on the other side of the river, afterwards.

Si too makes his way to the tea house. Moving along with his head down a bit. He keeps to the side of the road and dodge anything that manage to extend a bit. His movement is steady but not terribly fast, just direct. His face brightens up and his hat swayed back as he enters. HIs eyes scan for others as best he can. And if simple sight doesn't help him then he will inquire by description of the others.
Jan 6, 2021 7:02 pm
Si approaches the tea house, but does not see anyone yet. He was just about to ask about others, but then realizes he may have been the first to arrive. Do you still want to inquire about the others?
Jan 6, 2021 8:34 pm
Nozomi takes a breath to steady herself as she kneels down about 20' from the edge of the riverbank. She begins a sprint towards the other side and launches herself across, landing in knee-deep water and pinwheeling her arms to barely keep her balance.

She steps up on to the other side, running through possible excuses for why her shins are wet in her head as she makes her way towards the town (and, subsequently, the tea-house). She decides she'll say she slipped and nearly fell in the river, if anyone gives her grief.

Si gives it a moment and instead issue small talk to take a bit of time to see if any arrive. He starts with "The weather has been good. Seems odd don't you think."
OOC:
Edit: no idea what the weather has been? At least Nozomi didn't get a bath.

Kazuyo bows to the teahouse hostess and follows her to the indicated room. She will sit so she will be readily visible to those who enter, and wait for her companions.
Jan 9, 2021 5:06 pm
Ozunu makes his way directly to the onsen. After bathing himself, and changing into a set of light robes he makes his way into the tea house, his cleverly disguised silken chain armor still wrapped tightly under his robes. He enters, and requests hot soba in broth, with tofu, as well as a sobacha tea. Bland food, as would be expected of an ascetic. He finds a comfortable corner table with a good view of the exits, on the second floor, and takes a window adjacent seat.

Here he sat, taking a well made white jade pipe from his robe, this he filled with a resin made of cannabis and incense and began to puff upon it. He placed the sticks from which he cast the I-Ching in a simple brass cup and made subtle gestures to his fellow genin.

It took several hours, but eventually all four of the ninja have regathered at the tea room without further incident. You all note that Nozomi appears to have made a mess of herself mudding her sandals and legs in whatever challenge she had faced to made it to the room. Meanwhile, Ozunu looks completely relaxed and refreshed. The hostess has been a bit impatient with Kazuyo and Si who has been sitting there a good while and ordering little. But the arrival of their friends seemed to have been explained much of their loitering in her mind, or perhaps the possibly of serving more food and tea and the coins that come with that may have made her more cheerful.
Jan 17, 2021 8:41 pm
Si gives the Hostess sorry full apology as he explain that he was awaiting the others. Obvious that is true when do arrive and Si makes sure some extra coins pass.

After hostess and other close ears are gone, Place is more secure than normal. We must be careful. He stops there to hear if any had any trouble already.
Jan 17, 2021 9:26 pm
During her wait, Kazuyo will have complimented the hostess for the fine tea, and gently enquired about the town market, and the good Lord Akashi's health. She would have tried to steer the conversation to the family of the Lord, in order to understand their allegiance and colors.

She now scans the room to see if it is safe to speak freely. She looks at the other customers of the teahouse, judging distances and aspect, to avoid being overheard.

Some small talk with the hostess taking your order tells you that it is normal to see a few Asakawa samurai in this town. Most of them accompany the frequent sedans moving through these parts carrying people of importance and affluence. They serve as armed escorts for these sedans. But the numbers you see today are more than normal.

"It seems our tea has yet to be delivered." Ozunu Raizo surmised pursing his lips and giving a shifted glance to his fellow Genin. "I should imagine we will wait 'til night to drink it." This close, under close scrutiny it was apparent that some injury had rendered the enormous warrior blind. His other senses were quite sharp, likely through necessity more than training. The white cataracts on his eyes must've made his vision terribly blurred. Though he did not seem to have difficulty finding his food, tea, or manipulating fine objects. In fact, it hardly seemed that the gravity or severity of the injury handicapped him at all.

Most especially it didn't stop him from ogling every woman who approached. He seemed unimpressed by most, taking interest instead in Kazuyo Ishida as he often found his eyes drawn to her. Her natural charm it seemed worked exceptionally well on him. He smiled often at her. Once again proving whyy the Buddhists on the continent had named him "White Teeth."

In a practiced whisper she comments "The increased surveillance is the right sign. Now we must blend in. Become invisible. We Learn. What we learn, we share as discussed."
