[IC]Mission 1: Yoshi's Gold

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

Night was falling fast as you approach the designated meeting spot, an old inn just off a well-traveled road. Your chunin had given explicit instructions for each of you to approach at designated 10 minute intervals as to avoid suspicion. The genin were to all gather in a room in the guise of a festive party. When all were present, the instructions were flashed in code by lantern light on the paper window. Deciphering the message, this was your mission.

Background:
The Asakawa clan has been secretly planning a war against the Uemura clan. Young Yorichi Asakawa has been hiring mercenaries to bolster his ranks in anticipation of the first wave of attack. To that end, he has been spending large sums from the family treasury to pay for the mercenaries and their equipment. His father Yoshi has been paying for most of these expenses, and spies have concluded that the latest shipment of coins is about to be made.

Yoshi is shrewd and knows better than to send a large force to guard the shipment. Instead, it is being made by sedan carried by footman over the two-day trip between his castle and young Yorichi's stronghold. The sedan will be guarded by a few soldiers, some of whom will be disguised as the sedan carriers. As a further precaution, Yoshi has a fondness of using decoys. But, to get to Yorichi's stronghold, they will start at the closest town still under Yoshi's control, Minamiko.

While all of the sedans will be there, the sheer number of Asakawa forces will make it unwise to attack them there. Instead, the group should go to Minamiko, track the correct sedan convoy and attack it after it has separated from the others. In addition, to avoid suspicion on the Uemura clan, the theft should be pinned on the Shibata clan, the son of its hot-headed leader of which was recently slighted by Yoshi's youngest daughter.

Tasks:
1. Infilitrate Minamiko and wait for the convoys.
2. Identify which convoy is the correct target.
3. Follow the target convoy without being noticed.
4. Attack the convoy in its two-day journey and retrieve the coins.
5. Frame the Shibata clan for the theft.

Your group believes the room to be secure, at least for a good while longer. This may be an opportune time to devise a strategy for your mission among yourselves.

The Monk "White Teeth" stared at the sticks and compared the results to the I Ching, The Book of Changes. "Hexagram forty six- Beneath the Soil, the Seedling pushes upward toward the light: To preserve his integrity, the Superior Person contents himself with small gains that eventually lead to great accomplishment."

He turn the hexagram upside down and read what was written in the book of changes aloud. "PUSHING UPWARD has supreme success. One must see the great man. Fear not. Departure toward the south brings good fortune."

Kazuyo lends a distracted ear to the Monk, still focused on the paper window where their instructions were projected.

"the Shibata clan," she thinks out loud. "We will need one of their banners, or another of their insignia, so we can divert suspicion upon them."

She eventually looks at the others in the room. "the rest seems to rely on good observation. Possibly we should scout the route of the convoy to find the most suitable site for an attack."

Si just stands like pillar, Think it best we should blend in. Then we move forward from there. Travel should be quick.
Dec 28, 2020 2:36 pm
She nods. "Fellow genin, the first step is going to Minamiko.
It will be best to not enter as a group. I hear there is a market, maybe the easiest is to infiltrate as purchasers in search of goods there.
Once inside, I can scout to see if any of the Shibata clansfolks are resident in the town or visiting, and try to approach them. I can prepare for blaming it on them by securing some token proving their involvement."
Dec 28, 2020 8:32 pm
"I will obviously not be a purser of goods. But will give my ear to the weary soldiers looking to unburden their karmic obligations." White Teeth shook the prayer beads on his wrist, each of them was a death mask expertly carved from humanoid incisors. "In such a manner I should be able to identify the correct convoy and attract no negative attention." He shook the prayer beads once more when he finished speaking, the teeth rattled against another and went silent.
Dec 28, 2020 8:57 pm
Nozomi purses her lips. "I'm not the best at infiltration via deception. Perhaps I could scout the surrounding area, and figure out how we will follow the sedan without being spotted." She glances towards Ozunu with a respectful nod, "or I could see if I couldn't get close to the sedans and try to deduce which one is being loaded with gold, just in case the soldiers think their fear of Yoshi trumps their karmic obligations."
Dec 28, 2020 9:22 pm
"A pick is a strong tool, a shovel as well. In tandem they build great walls." Ozunu Raizo, "White Teeth" replied cryptically - though in agreement. Cracking the knuckles of his enormous fists he grinned flashing a full mouth of brilliant white teeth. "If they should fear anyone, they should fear the instrument of Buddha's enlightenment. If we should fail in our task, there are no vows against kidnapping and beating information from someone. Perhaps we should also locate an officer?"
Dec 28, 2020 10:02 pm
"My master taught me that for every ripple one causes in a tranquil pond, there is a chance to lose one's life. As long as we do not cause a tsunami, Ozunu-san."

She looks around the room. "We enter the city, we observe. We can maybe leave each other coded messages, hidden among the many prayer scrolls in the city temple? "
Dec 28, 2020 11:12 pm
Me thinks it would best if we all meet in say the first inn when coming. We can arrive at different times. I shall only be recognizable by wearing a blue scarf. From there we make plans as we see how this place looks.
Dec 28, 2020 11:23 pm
"Bushido is realized in the presence of death. This means choosing death whenever there is a choice between life and death. There is no other reasoning." White Teeth replied stoically to Kazuyo. It wasn't posturing, but matter of fact to a warrior monk. "Coded messages draw no prying eyes. Let us leave them at the Buddha with two faces, in such a way we will receive the Buddha's blessing on our subterfuge."

"As for the Inn, it is forbidden as an ascetic for me to enter. Might I suggest the Onsen or a Tea House? The Gokudo will provide assistance if we pay them, and I am well known to them."
Dec 28, 2020 11:47 pm
Notes are fine. Lets meet then at the first Tea House. Sounds suitable to me.
Dec 29, 2020 12:22 am
"It is agreed," she stands up nodding, then slides open the paper partition that functions as a door to the room, looks around and leaves, glancing one last time at her ryu and closing the partition behind her.
Dec 29, 2020 12:29 am
"The way is long, and the path narrow." Rising from his perch on the wall White Teeth offered a benediction to those that remained, bowing, then departed. "Darkness within darkness, the gateway to all mystery."
Dec 30, 2020 2:47 am
Si nods to Nozomi and says We shall succeed. He then takes moment to exit.
Dec 30, 2020 5:07 pm
Nozomi nods back at Si, drumming her fingers on the table as he leaves and letting out a long sigh. "I hope this works," she mutters to herself as she waits to leave after Si, making her departure uneventfully.
Dec 30, 2020 11:10 pm
The Si you know is gone Nozomi as turn to exit. A different man appears to be there and it is nothing like the Si you know but does have a bluish scarf now.

The forested, hilly dirt road meandering toward Minamiko flattens out as it approaches the town. Farmland lay on both sides of it. The time is late summer and the rice in the paddies looked ready to be harvested soon. This year, it will be a good harvest from the looks of it. Minamiko itself is divided into two parts by the Tetsui River and sits in the shadow of Asae Castle, an old, stone and wooden structure sitting to the east of the town. The two sides of the slow-moving river is connected by a flat wooden bridge that is more than wide enough for a horse-drawn cart to pass. From whence you came, the castle is on the far side of the river, as is much of the town itself. On this side of the river, there are houses, a few shops and an inn. The nearest tea house is on the other side of the river, on the right side of the main road.

Looking around, it is a couple of hours before sundown, and people are going about their business. Most are workers, although there are a few samurai standing about outside one of the stores talking with one another. Also, four soldiers with spears stand at the near end of the bridge. It does not appear to be the normal state of affairs, but rather the town is on alert for something.
Jan 1, 2021 10:58 pm
Si has change his appears to look more like typical worker as he makes his way across the bridge network to get to the nearly tea house as he want to be off the road before dark, but is not hurrying himself. Keeps his head slightly down when coming to the bridge and crossing it.
OOC:
Like the picture plus a blue scarf.

Kazuyo approaches the guarded bridge keeping in step with a group of workers, with the demeanor and attire of a travelling woman sent by her House to visit the market or merchant house for groceries and ingredients, from a near village. She carries an empty basket to reinforce her narrative.

She will have prepared a cover story about it, namedropping pertinent neighboring villages and families' names, in case she is stopped and quizzed.

Unarmed and carrying nothing noteworthy the monk called White Teeth thought nothing of making some conversation with the guards on the bridge. He offered his nicest smile when approaching, waved to them and stopped about ten feet short of them. "May we all be well, happy and peaceful, May no harm come to us. Is there something the matter?" Ozunu Raizo nodded to the yari each guard carried. "A show of force to keep the peasants in check?" Though Ozunu had some reasons to suspect the increased security had something to do with their mission, he only had suspicion. Facts were what he operated from. His shrewd analytical mind had already noted several figures pass by the station and assumed they were just there to tally the comings and goings.

"Good for us. If they are watching the roads they aren't watching the caravans as tightly."
Jan 3, 2021 7:07 pm
Nozomi approaches carefully, looking along the river for some way to cross without having to interact with the guards on the bridge, staying far enough away from the town to not be visible to all but the most astute observers.
OOC:
Nozomi has +14 in jump, so she's looking for maybe somewhere where the river is narrow, or there are rocks poking up and out that she can jump across.
Jan 3, 2021 11:03 pm
Si, in his disguise as a worker carrying a hoe, is waved along as he crosses the bridge. Three of the guards do not pay him any mind, but one looks at him intently with his eyes focusing on the blue scarf. He is about to say something another of guards, when the group of them looks and points at a comely young travelling woman heading towards the bridge. They snicker and laugh a bit, with the one forgetting whatever he was about to say.

As Kazuyo approaches, one of the groups steps in her direct path apparently intent to block her way. He begins to say, "Where are you...." That's as far as he gets before the one more perceptive guard grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him back, shaking his head in disapproval. "Remember what Lord Akashi said." The first guard backs away, and they let the woman pass without further incident, although their leering eyes could make a modest woman uncomfortable.

This might have passed as the most memorable moment of the late afternoon, until the monk White Teeth stops before the guards offering his blessing and making conversation. The guards regard him warily. The apparently more senior guard from the back steps forward and speaks, "Blessings of the gods to you as well, monk. What is your name and what your purpose in coming to Minamiko?" He does seem a bit on edge.

EleventhDwarf sent a note to Jomsviking
Further down the river, Nozomi scouts the riverbank for an alternate place to cross than the bridge. The river's movement near the town is slow on account of its width and the numerous diversions into the irrigation channels around the farmlands. You have travelled two miles downriver at this point, and still you have yet to find a place that you could jump the river without getting wet confidently. It may be possible that such a spot exists even further downriver, but you can't be sure. What do you want to do?
Jan 4, 2021 4:51 am
Ozunu hadn't necessarily expected such friendly conversation to strike up. He saw no reason to lie about his future plans or his Chinese name. "Jiébái Yáchi. I am on pilgrimage to each of the Shinto shrines, I could smell your tea from over the hill and decided to make rest here and bathe. I must confess trepidation at the road ahead. Seeing such force disturbs even the serenity The Buddha has given me. Are the roads here that dangerous?"

Kazuyo keeps her eyes down to her feet, proceeds past the guards and crosses the bridge.
Lord Akashi, looks like your instructions just saved the life of that idiot, she thinks and preserved my cover.

She only looks up on the opposite side, taking in the sight. She will locate the first tea house and go in as agreed, avoiding other guards if she can.
She also looks out for any obvious signs of Clan Shibata presence, in the form of banners on houses, or distinctive kimono patterns from the Clan.
Jan 6, 2021 2:35 am
Tsk. Nozomi lets out a sigh as she casts her eyes along the river. As risky as a jump or swim may be, for her, it's quite possibly less risky than trying to talk her way past the guards.
OOC:
Is there anywhere I could make a high-DC check to jump? I've got a +14 to jump and a -1 to charisma so it seems like the least risky option. If not, Nozomi will probably head back and try to talk her way past.
Jan 6, 2021 5:45 pm
The guard's eyes narrow a bit, scrutinizing Ozunu's words and facial expression. "We're here to keep the Lord's peace. Now move along...Jiébái Yáchi." He basically spits out the words of the foreign-sounding name. He steps aside and uses the butt of his spear to wave the monk through. The other guards follow his lead, and they shift their spears from a battle-ready two-handed grip to a resting position in one hand.

---

Kazuyo enters the tea house, passing by the three outdoor benches where some of the customers sit. It is a comfortable-looking local establishment with apparently a couple of separate rooms. A hostess greets Kazuyo at the door and beckons her to follow into the room to the right, "Welcome, honorable woman. Please come in, please follow me this way."

---

While Nozomi can't be sure that she will clear the river in a single leap, it isn't beyond her capabilities...on a good day. She was more inclined to try her physical prowess (+14 to jump!) than her verbal wits (-1 CHA) any day. Anyways, it didn't look like it was a river she would drown in even if she didn't quite make it. Without constructed embankments, she will just fall in and will have to swim the remaining distance. She would then be wet, but some water won't hurt her...at least physically.
OOC:
Go ahead and make a jump roll. This was actually kind of funny, as I had not really considered how wide the river would be. I had picture in my mind, but as I read back on my description, I see that there may have been some contradictory information in it. On the one hand, the slow-moving river was supposed to indicate that the river was somewhat safe to cross by other means but the rationale for it was also its width. On the other hand, the flat bridge meant that it wouldn't be so overly wide, as such structures cannot span sufficient distances without many multiple supports. All of this led me to just say that Nozomi's DC here is 30 to clear the 30-foot jump across the river and be essentially completely dry. A 25 would mean that she's landed knee deep in the water, and she will need to make a DC10 balance check to land. Fall or rolling 20 or less on jump, you aren't landing and will need to swim a bit (DC10). Keep in mind that you're also walking allow a foot path back to town on the other side of the river, afterwards.
Jan 6, 2021 6:12 pm
Si too makes his way to the tea house. Moving along with his head down a bit. He keeps to the side of the road and dodge anything that manage to extend a bit. His movement is steady but not terribly fast, just direct. His face brightens up and his hat swayed back as he enters. HIs eyes scan for others as best he can. And if simple sight doesn't help him then he will inquire by description of the others.
Jan 6, 2021 7:02 pm
Si approaches the tea house, but does not see anyone yet. He was just about to ask about others, but then realizes he may have been the first to arrive. Do you still want to inquire about the others?
Jan 6, 2021 8:34 pm
Nozomi takes a breath to steady herself as she kneels down about 20' from the edge of the riverbank. She begins a sprint towards the other side and launches herself across, landing in knee-deep water and pinwheeling her arms to barely keep her balance.

She steps up on to the other side, running through possible excuses for why her shins are wet in her head as she makes her way towards the town (and, subsequently, the tea-house). She decides she'll say she slipped and nearly fell in the river, if anyone gives her grief.

Ozunu makes his way directly to the onsen. After bathing himself, and changing into a set of light robes he makes his way into the tea house, his cleverly disguised silken chain armor still wrapped tightly under his robes. He enters, and requests hot soba in broth, with tofu, as well as a sobacha tea. Bland food, as would be expected of an ascetic. He finds a comfortable corner table with a good view of the exits, on the second floor, and takes a window adjacent seat.

Here he sat, taking a well made white jade pipe from his robe, this he filled with a resin made of cannabis and incense and began to puff upon it. He placed the sticks from which he cast the I-Ching in a simple brass cup and made subtle gestures to his fellow genin.

It took several hours, but eventually all four of the ninja have regathered at the tea room without further incident. You all note that Nozomi appears to have made a mess of herself mudding her sandals and legs in whatever challenge she had faced to made it to the room. Meanwhile, Ozunu looks completely relaxed and refreshed. The hostess has been a bit impatient with Kazuyo and Si who has been sitting there a good while and ordering little. But the arrival of their friends seemed to have been explained much of their loitering in her mind, or perhaps the possibly of serving more food and tea and the coins that come with that may have made her more cheerful.
Jan 17, 2021 8:41 pm
Si gives the Hostess sorry full apology as he explain that he was awaiting the others. Obvious that is true when do arrive and Si makes sure some extra coins pass.

After hostess and other close ears are gone, Place is more secure than normal. We must be careful. He stops there to hear if any had any trouble already.
Jan 17, 2021 9:26 pm
During her wait, Kazuyo will have complimented the hostess for the fine tea, and gently enquired about the town market, and the good Lord Akashi's health. She would have tried to steer the conversation to the family of the Lord, in order to understand their allegiance and colors.

She now scans the room to see if it is safe to speak freely. She looks at the other customers of the teahouse, judging distances and aspect, to avoid being overheard.

Some small talk with the hostess taking your order tells you that it is normal to see a few Asakawa samurai in this town. Most of them accompany the frequent sedans moving through these parts carrying people of importance and affluence. They serve as armed escorts for these sedans. But the numbers you see today are more than normal.

"It seems our tea has yet to be delivered." Ozunu Raizo surmised pursing his lips and giving a shifted glance to his fellow Genin. "I should imagine we will wait 'til night to drink it." This close, under close scrutiny it was apparent that some injury had rendered the enormous warrior blind. His other senses were quite sharp, likely through necessity more than training. The white cataracts on his eyes must've made his vision terribly blurred. Though he did not seem to have difficulty finding his food, tea, or manipulating fine objects. In fact, it hardly seemed that the gravity or severity of the injury handicapped him at all.

Most especially it didn't stop him from ogling every woman who approached. He seemed unimpressed by most, taking interest instead in Kazuyo Ishida as he often found his eyes drawn to her. Her natural charm it seemed worked exceptionally well on him. He smiled often at her. Once again proving whyy the Buddhists on the continent had named him "White Teeth."

As many among you entered the town in the late afternoon, night fall comes soon after the entire group has gathered. The hostess comes looking to settle your bill, and the group is ready to find out what they can under the cover of darkness. The streets are almost entirely empty, with only a straggler or two walking. The noises of the town itself has died down as well. Within in, only the few inns, restaurants and establishments in the pleasure quarter are still abound in light and activity. In the distance, torches and fires are lit around Castle Asae whose silhouette is seen clearly in the half moon, cloudy sky.
Jan 23, 2021 12:11 am
Kazuyo will leave the tea house after paying her share. Once outside, she will part with her companions and will prepare for a night of stealthy observation.
She hides in the shade of an isolated wall and changes her clothes by turning the kimono inside out, revealing the all-black fabric. She also wraps a black scarf around her lower face to conceal her pallor.

Thus prepared, she will climb the wall and start negotiating a hidden path, parallel to the streets but out of sight, using walls and roofs and shadows to blend in, staying immobile when noises approach.

She will try to get in proximity of the larger, wealthier houses of the town. Her intent is to scout the wealthy residences to try understand if one of them might belong to the Clan Shibata. Her eyes are open to spot family symbols, her ears ready to eavesdrop any snippet of useful conversation from hiding spots.

Looking around the group is able to determine that there are only a few roadways in and other of the town. In the direction of where the group came from, after the crossing the bridge, the roads fork after passing the closest rice paddies in two different directions. Both of those paths head into the hilly forest beyond. One was the dirt road from which you came; the other is the road that leads to Yorichi Asakawa's stronghold. The other road out of town slowly rises, leads to Castle Asae and runs along its basefor over a hundred yards. At the far side of the castle, the road is one leg of the four-way intersection. It appears that the castle was sited to defend and control access to these roadways. The roads beyond run flat for some distance before disappearing also into the forested hills. You would need to move near the castle to do further scouting of these roads.

Ozunu went south as the I-Ching had recommended earlier, seating himself in meditation at the southern crossroads where he began silent vigil and meditation. He took a concealed position, but made no attempts to disguise himself or hide away not wanting to appear suspicious, the mottled color of his simple robes, its grass and leaf patterns, when sitting still obscured him quite effectively. There he watched, and waited. Knowing gold would be quite heavy he kept a weather eye for a certain overloaded sedan. The blind monk kept a bowl for charity out in front of him. There he waited, in the shadow of the leaves, disappearing in the dark.

She uses the rest of the night to scout the walls of Asae castle from a distance, assessing possible ways in and defenses. She makes a mental note of guarded points and how they are manned. It might become necessary at some stage going into the castle, as the sedans and their escorts are likely to be within the walls.

Ozuno sits silently amid the peaceful silence of the rice paddies to south. He notices the glow of the moon reflecting off the gentle ripples of the river. It brings to mind a number of different verses of poetry. Otherwise, all seems quiet on this night at the southern crossroads.

Si tries to mix in with the local crowd to discover the latest news circulating in the village inn. As he does so, the others note his awkwardness, and backs turn to shut him out of the conversations. Nevertheless, he does hear a little of the gossip of the town related Goya and his arguments with his wife. But that doesn't seem particularly relevant to the mission at hand.

Kazuyo and Nozomi sneak off into the night to scout out the castle. As they approach....
OOC:
Kazuyo and Nozomi, are either of you attempting to hide your approach?

Si is who never great at investigation can't locate any info about the recruitment. He guess that the recruitment must have been well hid as there is no chatter about it. Least he could find none. He takes time to write a cryptic note that the others can translate to mean No information on recruitment. At Inn.

After spending his time investigating recruitment goes to the inn for the rest of the night. He will sit there a while and listen while drinking lightly before turning to start again in the morning.

Heading North, Raizo attempts to ascertain if there is a sedan in the castle.

He stalked through the rice fields using the cover of dark in the late night. He steeled himself for a long climb looking at the castle wall and took up to it, he found a dimly lit portion of the wall and attempted to make his covert insertion. Eyes and ears alert to the encroach of potential threats.

Taking 20 on climb, even though it'll take a minute to get up that wall.

...Kazuyo and Nozomi sneak off into the night to scout out the castle. As they approach, they see that area around the castle has been diligently cleared of obstruction and made flat as if to allow the fielding of a large army. Castle Asae itself is built like many other castles with a labyrinthine series of walls and watchtowers surrounding the large multi-story castle that can be view from afar. The outer walls, and presumably inner walls as well, are constructed to be difficult to breach and dangerous to climb with a number of overlapping arrowslits, both obvious and hidden, that allow its defenders to see the goings-on outside and to fire upon would-be invaders. Formal access to the castle complex is by the way of a main gate on the northern wall, which affords ample opportunities for detection. One is less sure about the rest of the walls.

Entering the castle undetected would be no easy task for any army, but not impossible for a truly skilled ninja. So far, they do not think they were detected, but they can't be sure as it is not possible to see if anyone is peering through the arrowslits. Kazuyo is without any real ideas, until Nozomi with her sharp eyes points out that there is a second smaller access way leading out of the castle from the indications of a smaller footpath. From your experience, it is likely though that too is guarded with a lesser number of arrowslits and murder holes, although those are likely to be just as strategically placed for maximum effectiveness.

The two are discussing these facts, when Ozuno comes along, having been spotted by Nozomi as well. He makes his way towards the castle wall apparently, trying to scale it....

"I would not, Ozuno-san..." she says, drawing his attention to the many arrowslits. "Also the northern gate is too exposed and well guarded. However, Nozomi cleverly noticed a possible secondary entrance. Should we take a closer look at that?"

Kazuyo starts thinking whether access to the castle might be easier by way of subtlety. Maybe the Castle could use some extra hands, if they prepare to host more troops. Or maybe by way of her music...

Ozunu freezes when called out blanches white. He dropped down to the ground.\. Not at all like one would expect from a Buddhist, the fluid, powerful reflexes of a person who had spent a lifetime fighting. He did not choose to roll, but rather falling supinal, he landed on his entire left side. It was not that he hit the ground but rather he caught it, collapsing while retaining the weight of his body. Rotating at the waist he drew himself to his right knee as if on reflex. He stood and fell back against the wall. The blind monk placed a hand over his browline as if shielding it from some invisible sun. He lay flush against the wall, hadn't even drawn a breath. Scanning his horizon he sought to detect the woman who had said his name. He grinned, revealing his glistening White Teeth, a grin that even twinkled in the shadows as he was obscured.

Slowly he drew his hands over his abdomen. He proceeded to sign.
"May all those who preside over warriors be my vanguard!"

He had no idea where the voice was coming from, but he knew who it was. It was a voice he liked, just as pretty as the lips that uttered it. Perfect pitch and powerful. "Shit I hope they didn't hear that." He found himself thinking, it took his smile away.

He then located Kazuyo and gestured his hands flat at waist level. He pulled his fingers up and signed a warding gesture.
