Star Wars: Neon Noir

There are 3.2 million stories in the naked galaxy. This is one of them.

I'm gauging interest for a Star Wars campaign inspired by hardboiled detective fiction, film noir, and the neon noir of Blade Runner.

The PCs are members of a private detective agency sometime in the early days of the New Republic (The Mandalorian timeframe). The first case will center on a single urban location. The adventures will likely be about 60 percent social interactions (interviewing sources, grilling bad guys), 20 percent action (fights and chases, mainly), and 20 percent other (snooping, sneaking, doing research on POIs, etc.).

Rules-wise, we'll hew closest to FFG's Edge of the Empire, using the business rules from the Colonist book to represent the detective agency. The PCs should be moral enough to at least be sympathetic, as their job is to investigate the dark underbelly of the galaxy rather than to take direct part in it. (That doesn't mean they have to be goodie-two-shoes, of course. But think Sam Spade or Jessica Jones, not Boba Fett.).

This is a concept where a lot of popular character types won't be appropriate. Armored bounty hunters, heavy weapons specialists, Jedi wannabes, and dedicated crafters don't really fit the theme. The PCs and main NPCs are essentially civilians, so body armor and disintegrator rifles will just scare away the people you need to talk to. If you're interested in Star Wars because you love badass bounty hunters, tricked-out gear, or Jedi mysticism, this isn't the game for you. In other words, think The Maltese Falcon, not the Millennium Falcon.

On the other hand, underutilized character types can thrive in this game. Knowledge skills and Social skills will be your bread and butter as you investigate crime, so face characters and egghead types will really shine. Sneaky types and social/martial hybrids (like Marshalls or Enforcers) are also great fits. Other character types (like, say, pilots or technicians) can be helpful if players are careful to round them out with skills in other areas.

Beyond that, I'll be adapting some of the rules tweaks from Genesys (like "social combat" and maybe even the Favor system in place of Obligation), but these are things to get into in the game forums once I know there's interest.

One last caveat: It's the holidays, a period when people often drop off PbP without a word. We'll probably be a bit slow to start up as a result. However, please don't express interest or join up if you can't contribute during the holiday period—excepting the actual holidays and their eves, of course.

I already have one interested player. If I can get two more, this game's a go. I'll take up to five players total. If there's more interest than that, priority will go to folks who are only in a handful of games or fewer at the moment.

Get this and get it straight: Crime is a sucker's road, and those who travel it wind up in the gutter, the prison, or the grave. You gonna be the one to put 'em there?

Am I the interested player? If not, I'm throwing my hat into the ring :)

I'd love another Star Wars FFG game :)

Definitely interested but I'd say you're full. Never had the chance to get a Star Wars game that stays the course so far here.

Oh god yes absolutely.

Why do these things always get posted at 5 am?

I'm interested mate. If you're full just consider me a permanent reserve if you need someone to jump in down the road :)

Looks like this has legs! Nezzeraj was indeed the player who reached out to me (we played together in another game), so he gets a slot. But Carabas does raise a good point about time zones and fairness.

If others are interested beyond those who have indicated as much above, feel free to say so here. (Again, please don't ask to join if you're already in a ton of games.) Rather than first-come, first-served, I might try to randomize who gets the initial wave of invites.

I'd definitely be interested. Glad to be on a reserve list. not in any game currently

Game sounds awesome. I've got a lot on my plate right now so I don't think I can do this one, but just to show that interest in Star Wars is quite alive I'll give my encouragement. Looks like you got the people you need anyway, happy gaming!

So the plan was to roll a d8 four times for slots 2–5, but there's no integrated roller on this main forum! So I used another roller, which requires me to post screenshots.

1 - KCC69
2 - Esidrix
3 - TheVagrant
4 - Mephistophilis
5 - Carabas
6 - mcneils5
7 - crazybirdman
[ +- ] First Roll
First roll: 5, 6, 6, 6 = Carabas and mcneils5
[ +- ] Second Roll
Second roll (2 more slots): 8, 1 = KCC69 and no eighth person, so third roll...
[ +- ] Third Roll
Third roll (final slot): 2 = Esidrix

nezzeraj, KCC69, Esidrix, Carabas, mcneils5, I'll get a forum up and invites sent out this weekend.

TheVagrant, Mephistophilis, and crazybirdman, thanks so much for your interest! I'll give you first dibs if someone has to drop out.

Hi, folks! Bumping this thread to advertise that we have one, possibly two openings for this game. The gumshoes have just solved their first case, and we have a couple of players departing. The next case will begin very soon, so you'll be getting in at the perfect time.

The recruitment post at the very top of this thread is still accurate. But I should underscore that this Blade Runner/film-noir-inspired take on Star Wars is decidedly bleaker than most Star Wars media. The game is about small victories against implacable forces of graft and apathy. You're one of the few folks in Canto Bight willing to take a stand on a planet rife with corruption, where you can get anything you want—for a price.

Any reasonable Career or Specialization from Edge of the Empire or Age of Rebellion is fair game. But if you're the type who likes to fill holes in a party, we're down a sneaky-thief-type character, and something like a Medic or Doctor might come in handy in the upcoming investigation.

Post here or PM me if you're interested. If there's a lot of interest, I may use a random draw. That said, evidence that you're a regular poster and team-player will go a long way!

It's been 24 hours, and I've gotten some interest via PM. Going to let those two have a shot at the open slots. I'll post again if something opens up. Thanks, all!

Thanks for the interest, Jomsviking! But we're full for now. Watch this space; I'll let you know if an opening comes up.
