Echo looks cool. Go for it. Look at the Jaguar Oath on page 51-52 of the campaign guide
Your text to link here...
This link is also on the reference forum as well as free on DMGuild

You may take both echo and jaguar oath as far as I am concerned. Its overpowered, but more for color and would balance you with magic items that the other party members already have.

At 7th level, you already get jaguar shapeshifting.

Sounds awesome!

Yes, I was hoping to play either a variant human or a tabaxi (because jaguar, right?)

Would you accept an Echo Knight?

If not, then perhaps an Eldritch Knight?

If you give me a link to the game I'm eager to apply.

Thanks!

Yes, this is 5e. There is very little lore on Maztica, but I am freely exploring a twist of the story that even the fandom revisionist haven't explored.

There is too much to catch up on, but important aspects for figuring out your character may be include this:

The Faerunian god of protection, Helm, and his Silver Knights (think conquistadors) have "discovered" Maztica and have made it to the Capitol of Maztica, Nexal, where he has waged war on the hoard of orc and jagres that were once the mighty army of Jaguar Knights devoted to the god of war, Zaltec. Some believe, the God of justice and peace, Qotal has summoned the Silver Order to save them, but the motives of the Silver Order are unclear.
Some Knights have even been corrupted by the First Man, a legendary vampire and enemy of Zaltec.

A few Jaguar Knights have escaped the viperhand transformation by Loliath and they lose themselves in the surrounding countryside, becoming a guerilla resistance movement. The country folk around Nexal have fled to the safety of the walls of the cities of Nexal to escape the outpouring from the Underdark led by the Spider Queen Loliath, and the Silver Order impose martial law to protect them, though it may seem like imprisoning them. The Maztica people resent the foreigners and lead a rebellion against them. The Jaguar knights still defend Zaltec and wish to restore Nexal to his former glory. They use the power of Maztica's predators to weave Zaltec's hisha magic, even transforming into the jaguar itself.

A party of heroes have confronted corrupted Silver Knights in Baya, far to the south, and they have rescued a baby and her dying mother's tiloni (think soul) from the First Man who intended to take the tiloni as his next bride and mother to make more spawn. To fend off the First Man, the party released Eha, the Goddess of wind and first breath and summoned Coatlicue, the grandmother goddess of death to protect the tiloni from the vampire. They came to Nexal to assist the newly anointed High Priestess of Zaltec (and prematurely try to claim the throne) and ended up defending Zaltec's Temple against a combined attack by Silver Order who want the control of the temple and a group of fanatics in a newly formed church to Uhti, both of whom came together to release a newly spawned vampire with devastating effect on to the temple defenses. It was a massive battle (that lasted a month and a half through the holidays).

Now, the party is on quest again (from the initial storyline) to seek out the Pyramid of the Gods, right it and restore order to the pantheon, and take a map from the vampire Elena Lampbright who in turn lies in ambush to take the map's codex key that the party has. This adventure is the final step to discovering the First Man's hidden temple where they want to steal and use the chalice of the gods. (thus ending Act 1)

A jaguar knight is most likely a human variant, though there are tabaxi and foreign converts from the green people (elves), half orc, and only rarely from the desert dwarves. Assimar from Lopango and other stranger races sometimes take the rites. The Jaguar Knight class is defined in the Maztica Campaign guide by Mazitca Alive and is free on DM Guild. There is a link in the reference forum. It is a paladin, though I will entertain a ranger, monk, fighter, barbarian, rogue or any half-caster. There is a Fox Knight paladin NPC in the party sworn to Kiltzi, as well as a high level Eagle Knight paladin NPC sworn to Qotal and stationed in Nexal that comes and goes.

You are free to use standard spell arrays, though I would encourage you to use the Hishna magic spells and copy them onto your sheet spell notes because, they are wicked cool for role play, especially for martial players. The fox knight has just learned his own transformation skill.

BTW, I have expanded the magic circles beyond the Maztica Hishna and Pluma. I also color my magic with sea magic as expanded by Mazitca Alive and propose Tumqua magic for stone, Yahweh magic for jungle trees, Nahda for necromancy, and others. Don't think you have to learn it all. I hardly know it myself, lol.

The point of my campaign is to weave a story written by the players based on their own motivations. I do have an Asperger player that is completely befuddled by my open approach, but we have come to understand that that's fun too. I have the overarching villain's plot, but that is completely adaptable.

Hi!

I must confess I am unfamiliar with the setting, having never heard of it. I have always been fascinated by mesoamerica but I am no expert on the subject.

A jaguar knight would be great! This is D&D 5e, right? Which races & classes are you allowing?

Oh, if I misconstrued and by martial, you meant fighter, then I do have a gap in the story for a Zaltec jaguar knight with hishna magic. Are you familiar with that variant?

Cualici. Your gamer's tag suggest you know something about mesoamerica?

Are you suggesting a monk? That intrigues me. I have a vision of a God Man traveling Maztica taking pictures of wild landscapes with Tunqua magic and being spiritual. I also have a spelljammer backstory to Maztica.

What do you have in mind?

Please confirm for me that you cannot see the other players' subforums. I'm awful at security but want to protect everyone's private conversations.

Great! Thanks!

We have the other player set up too. I wanted two new players. He may be a shaman. We shall see.

Just downloaded the campaign guide. Will read, then create the character sheet for you to look over.

The other new player choose pluma magic so a Jaguar knight is perfect. All of your order, devoted to the God of War and Protection have been transfigured by the invading Spider Queen Loliath in the great Viperhand. Another foreign god, Helm, has discovered Maztica and seeks to rid the Capitol city of these beasts that were your compadres. Helm’s paladins, the Silver Order (think conquistadors) have secured the Capitol and imprisoned the refugees from the war torn countryside in the city walls. Eagle Knights have been trying to caravan the populace south to Tukan, a new city on the other side of the a house of Tezca desert. If the Silver Order were not enough, an ancient evil of vampires led by the First Man has taken this chance to expand his control of the Day by corrupting the weak minds and blood of the Silver Order. Basically no one is to be trusted. Even Zaltec’s Temple in Nexal has been appropriated by a Faerunian witch who claims the title of High Priestess. A new church devoted to the Mistress of Darkness has risen amongst the poor and homeless to topple these upstarts and return fairness and justice to Maztica. You just want Maztica to be the proud and independent nation it has always been. Zaltec has given the true people the Hishna magic to be strong against these enemies and you would rather use these gifts of the fang and the claw to help the people of your native land against all these foreigners.

I'm only now getting around to going over the campaign guide. I found the history chapters fascinating but overwhelming so I have skipped to the character options.

Do I understand you correctly? Jaguar Oath features overlaid on an Echo Knight "chassis" ?

1st level: Fighting Style, Second Wind
2nd: Action Surge
3rd: Martial Archetype: Echo Knight (Manifest Echo, Unleash Incarnation) AND Oath of the Jaguar Knight (Jaguar Armor, Oath Spells, Channel Divinity options)
4th: Ability Score Improvement
5th: Extra Attack
6th: Ability Score Improvement
7th: Echo Avatar, Jaguar Shape
Feb 2, 2021 5:05 pm
Let's skip the Channel Divinity since you aren't a paladin, but the rest, yes. I like a lot of flavor if you are down with it. You could even play the echo avatar as a jaguar if that suits you. Keep in mind, we do a lot of combat with gods. It doesn't hurt to be overpowered.

Ah yes, makes sense. Okay I will try a couple of builds (variant human & tabaxi) and run them by you. Thanks!
Feb 2, 2021 7:09 pm
Probably sticking with Jaguar Folk. Is this right? +2 Dex, +1 Cha, +1 Str.

I assume I will use Charisma for those oath spells?

Any suggestions for Background? Soldier? Acolyte?
Feb 2, 2021 7:16 pm
Oh and what do I do for spell slots? I don't actually have the Spellcasting feature.

Let's just say 1 use per long rest of oath spells from the 3rd and 5th level. That's four spells for flavor.

Work-in-progress character submitted pending Background and final equipment list.

The Viperhand nest that you just cleared had many orcs but no Jagres. Those you have been seeking. Those were your fellow Jaguar Knights transformed by the evil Queen of Spiders, Loliath. She’s hiding them from you. You can sense it. How can you undo this evil if you can’t find them. Yes, Zaltec must push Helm and Loliath back into the sea, but ... Maztica needs the Jaguar Knights back. Them first!

You have been lost in your own vengeance too long this time. You must be tired. You didn’t notice the child looking at you. She is curious. She can’t be more than 10 years old. Human. She’s just sitting on the tree branch looking at you. What does she see?

"Tell me. Who are you?"
Feb 4, 2021 4:17 am
Mismatched eyes, one amber, one turquoise, stare back at the child. The jaguar man's tail flicks pensively as his rough tongue rasps against the fur of one forearm.

Born an albino, with strange eyes, under a strange star, Tēcuani exists half in this reality and half in another. Out of time, out of phase, out of sync.

"I am a Jaguar Knight," the tabaxi replies simply. The rest is... immaterial? Unimportant? He searches through his admittedly limited vocabulary, but these words do not accurately describe what he is apart from his sworn oath. Uncertain, perhaps. Temporary. In flux.

"I am an echo of a Jaguar Knight," the warrior amends.
OOC:
Will edit character avatar later when at my laptop so the eyes fit the description.

Your statement should have inspired fear in the child, but she shrugs and drops down to the jungle floor. You are far from the cities of Nexal and on no trade routes. There should not be a child anywhere near here. Yet, she appears rather normal. She looks up into your mismatched eyes and stares past their coloration and into the tiloni soul of the cat within the gaze.

"Then we each are an echo of something else, something more real than ourselves. By statement and appearance, you are a Jaguar Knight, but the foreign gods have bent the minds of those great warriors to evil and their bodies to be sad mutations of a glorious past. Our own Far Payit healers of Maztica have tried to do the same to me. They tried, but I elude them as you elude Loliath. We are casualties of the gods' struggles to control the True World. We are the lost, you and I. The gods do not care for us. Zaltec has abandoned you, just as Qotal has abandoned me. What do you fight for now?"

She continues to stare, not expecting an answer right away, as she waits to hear your back story. "I am Uhti."
Feb 4, 2021 6:51 am
"I am Tēcuani," the jaguar man responds, regarding the child with curiosity. How did one such as she come to be here in the middle of nowhere? Tēcuani considers the question, what does he fight for now? Vengeance for its own sake is hardly a worthy pursuit, if satisfying.

"I fight for Maztica. I long to see her rid of these foreigners god and mortal alike," the knight growls. He unconsciously touches his armor as he declares this. The weight of it on his shoulders reminds him of the weight of responsibility that comes with it.

"And you, Uhti? What do you seek?"
OOC:
Does the Oath of the Jaguar Knight have codified tenets like the paladin oaths from the PHB?

She strikes a pose to wonder at you, her face curled in curiosity. "Funny, as a member of a dying breed of Zaltec worshipers, you strike me as someone whose duty to protect Maztica's borders would have an edge of vengeance to it. Perhaps I need to sharpen your weapon before it can be useful to me.

I'll answer you. Uhti is not so particular. Uhti wishes to rid Maztica of the troublemakers, foreign and domestic. Uhti wants a fairer Maztica for all."
She pulls from inside her suede jerkin, a tecpatl, a sacrificial double edged knife. She holds it in the way of the priests at temple in ceremony the moment before making the sacrifice. The threatening posture of the little girl makes a strong contrast to her figure.

"What are the tenets of your oath, Jaguar Knight?"
Feb 4, 2021 5:19 pm
"Rend My Foes' Spirit. It is not enough to merely defeat an enemy in battle. My victory must be so overwhelming that my enemies' will to fight is rent forever. A claw can end a life. Fear can end an empire."

"Show no Mercy. Ordinary foes might win my mercy, but my sworn enemies do not.

"Strength Above All. I shall dominate until a stronger one arises. Then I must grow mightier and meet the challenge, or fall to my own ruin."

Tēcuani recites from rote; his words sound hollow to him. Are his convictions also in flux? Uhti spoke of being lost, and of Zaltec's abandonment. Why, then, does the magic of tooth and claw still quicken his blood?

As you recite the oath, the girl transforms into a visage of Helm himself, silver plated with a glowing sword. He is close against you and towering over you by two heads.

"Soldier, you speak of fighting for Maztica. I, too, seek to protect this land and her peoples. You speak of overthrowing empires and dominating by strength. Do you wish to test yourself again my might? I ask again, who do you think you are!?!"
