The rising morning sun greets your eyes harshly as you crest a small hill with the caravan of merchants, mercenaries and mendicants you've been travelling with for the last week. It is about nine-o'clock in the morning, and already you've been travelling about two hours in the cold. But the winter's here in Southern Argollë are not harsh, and while unpleasant, travel is still possible.

As your eyes adjust you see the silhouette of the Auran Fort of Andrastem, "Fort Victory", taking shape about a league ahead of you. Another hour and you'll be at its walls. From there the caravan will split, some staying at the fort to distribute supplies, repair their wagons, and prepare for a return home, others will be going north to other Forts along the much vaunted Unbroken Line of the Auran border fortresses, while yet others will be heading East toward Samos, Cyfaraun, and yet other settlments, forts, and castles in the borderlands.

From here on out, you are more or less on your own, your paid contract for passage under the caravan's protection and guidance is fulfilled. As the sun reaches the ten-o'clock point of the sky, the Caravan approaches the gate and is challenged by the guard.

"Halt! State your names and business at Andrastem!" shouts the legionary from the wall.

"I am Enerkos, of Krysea, and this is a caravan brought under my protection. I am known to your Legate. We request permission to enter or remain in the vicinity for a short time." shouts the tanned, portly merchant that organized this caravan.

The legionary responds, "You are known, Enerkos, and your servants, but any we don't recognize will be required to declare themselves at the gate. You may enter." The gates to the fort open, and the Caravan begins the process of shuffling through into the small courtyard to do business with the soldiers and servants therein. As you come to the gates a pair of legionaries in full armor take names while a pair of scribes write descriptions. In Aura, all is recorded.

"Halt, stranger, you are not known to us. State your name and purpose."

What do you do?

Jobyn is following his friend and charge Alexander Choici and will follow his lead when it comes time.

"Hail and well met this fine day, men of the legion," chimed Harper, his voice earnest and polite as he raised a gloved hand in fair greeting whilst giving his pack a slight hoist a tad higher on one shoulder. Though his garb was roadworn and weathered, the man sporting it wore it well, carrying it on his form with ease. A sword hung at his belt, while a short bow straddled his back alongside his pack and a quiver thick with arrows. It was plain as day that the man was elven, hood down and sharp, elongated ears a dead giveaway alongside his tanned, exotic features and blue-black hair.

"Though my Argollën name is a long and convulted affair, I am known commonly by the name Harper; a fortune-seeker and physicker of some skill previously in contractual service to our mutual friend, Enerkos, and to those freely who shared in the journey," he explained, motioning towards the caravan moseying beyond the gates before waving it back towards the others awaiting due process. "As for business, I've come seeking opportunity -- by skill and trade or windfall, whether it's within or beyond these walls."
Apr 16, 2021 12:40 am
"Harper, Elf. Tan with black hair. Physicker. Come seeking employment," the legionary stated curtly to the Annalist scribbling on a scroll. The Annalist mumbled the same words back as he wrote each word. When finished he looks up at Harper and states plainly without enthusiasm and with a forced smile of feigned friendliness, "So Recorded. You may enter, but keep to the common areas near the barracks and be out by sunset. Next!" The legionary steps aside to let Harper through, and the annalist waves him in.
Apr 16, 2021 2:30 pm
Alexander himself is a male human. Younger than most people would picture in a mage, his 'beard' would be considered childish on any kind of dwarf. His travel clothes are just starting to show some use, but have none of the wear associated with serious adventurers.

He seemed perfectly fine with waiting to get into the city, reading from a largish book while he was waiting. Most would not consider him visibly armed, with only a belt knife being readily visible on his person. His backpack seems to be quite heavily laden, however.

"Ah, yes my turn I guess. My name is Alexander Choici; researcher, mapper, and mage. At the moment I've been contracted to do a bit of field research for my client. Hope to do a little of my own private research while I am out here, but that would depend on the circumstances. Hey did you know that the wild egret used to migrate through this area? The stopped after the Albinai Pass collapsed back in---"
OOC:
Alexander will continue to spout pretty much random fact about animal migration until someone stops him. If you listen long enough you might her things about animal-like monsters as well.
Apr 16, 2021 3:33 pm
The legionary ignores Alexander's ramblings about egrets and just lets him continue rambling while he recounts the description to the Annalist. Alexander Choici, human, pale skin, dark hair, bookish. Scholar. Aff..." the legionary stops hismelf, realizing he didn't hear Alexander say if he was a college wizard or not, and then interrupts Alexander's ramblings, "are you affiliated with the College of Wizards, and will you be visiting their Tower of Knowledge in Cyfaraun?"
Apr 17, 2021 3:39 pm
It takes Alexander a moment to change line of though. "Err...visiting?"
OOC:
I'm not sure if my character is associated or not, but I don't have Collegiate Wizardy.
Apr 17, 2021 4:16 pm
OOC:
Alex's sheet says he does... Along with Loremastery, naturalism, mapping, navigation and adventuring. But its up to you if you want your character to be on good terms with the college or not, you can decide that later. These legionaries aren't intensely scrutinizing, just recording because they have to record everything.

We'll sort the proficiencies thing out in a PM.
"Eh, alright. Whatever," the legionary responds somewhat indifferently and doesn't feel motivated to inquire further. He says to the Annalist "Wandering Mage. Travelling to the Tower."

The annalist waves Alexander through the gates, totally indifferent, "Welcome to Andrastem. Mind yourself, keep to the common areas and be out by sundown. NEXT!"
OOC:
To those already inside:
The Fort is cramped, with nearly a dozen large buildings crammed into a five acre plot. The walls are ten feet thick and just as high, the battlements outside made them look taller. There are narrow alleys, just wide enough for two armored men to squeeze through shoulder to shoulder, and a few wider paths between the clusters of barracks, the praetorium and the hospital, wide enough for about three or four armored horse abreast. The corners of the fort are marked by twenty foot tall towers.

There are quite a few people about, but only a dozen or so legionaries in armor. The rest of the people seem to be either legionaries off-duty or members of your caravan trying to do business with them. Near the Praetorium, the largest building, in the center of the fort, a man in bright clothing with a chain of office about his next is speaking with a man wearing the breastplate and uniform of a Legion officer and a woman wearing the clerical robes of an Auran priestess, with a thick fur shawl wrapped around her shoulders against the cold. Overall, however, the fort seems to be far more empty than it should be.
Apr 17, 2021 6:44 pm
Jobyn steps up and states, "Jobyn, bodyguard to him," pointing to Alexander and then waits. He thinks all this ridiculous hoopla is due to the human inability to work together for the common good of their own race. Then he supposes if they breed like rats then it is not surprising that they act like rats.

"Jobyn, Elf, dark hair, servant of eh... the last guy." The Annalist once again mumbles the words as he writes them, and the legionary steps aside to let Jobyn through. The Annalist gives Jobyn the same practice line, "Head on it, keep to the common areas, out by sundown."
Apr 18, 2021 12:49 am
He pauses and asks the guard, "May I ask what is with this out by sundown? I mean you do not let folks stay in your city overnight where it should be safer for them? Or is that the city simply is not a safe place to be at night?"

"What? Oh." The legionary snaps out of his usual mechanical execution of his duties, and answers politely "You're fine to stay in the town, but not in the fort itself. The town is out the North gate, about a hundred yards. We just require all new arrivals to the Exarchate to register here first. Especially in these troubled times. By Iskara's scales, I even heard talk of fire-demons showin' up in Lake Laman. You best keep a sharp eye out these days." He turns back to his duties.
Apr 18, 2021 1:28 am
"Ah I see, that makes good sense and really, thanks for the heads up on that." Jobyn then catches up to Alexander, "Interesting bit of information. How true do you think it is?"
Apr 18, 2021 7:45 pm
"Fire-demons? Alexander scratches his chin while thinking. "Well I suppose its always possible. Far more likely if someone summoned one than naturally occur though. Could be something worth following up on at least."
Apr 18, 2021 7:47 pm
"Are you sure, I mean arrows, I would not imagine would be all that effective against a fire demon, or would they?" He looks quizzically at Alexander
Apr 18, 2021 11:16 pm
Beyond the guardsman of the gate and within the fort proper, Harper had patiently awaited the rest of his colleagues. In the meantime, he'd surveyed the cramped little fort from just within the entrance, watching as the caravaneers plied their trade and the Legion and its denizens went about their business, officially or otherwise. The elf peered and watched like a curious child, taking in the sounds of chatter, but it was the Auran clerical officiate and the Legion officer that had caught his eye. They certainly stood out enough when compared to the humdrum activites elsewhere throughout the fort.

The nightblade's attention was quartered as Alexander and Jobyn entered in-tow. Though not traditionally speaking an eavesdropper, the tail-end of demonic murmurs was enough to perk up the elven doctor's ears.

"What was that about demons?" Harper inquired, one eyebrow arched as he paced alongside the scholar and his protector, his voice a lilting mix of curiosity and genuine concern.
Apr 22, 2021 3:26 pm
While you are conversing with each other:

The man in the officer's uniform calls up two of the rank and file legionaries, and sends them into the central building. He turns to the priestess and the man in bright robes and shakes his head saying something, which they both seem to disregard with a handwaves and sneers.

A man in the legion's tunic, but without armor is looking over a load of weapons from one of the merchants' carts, inspecting them and haggling with the merchant. The restless horses bridled to the cart shift their feet around and whinny and bray against the cold and boredom.

An old man wrapped in a heavy cloak haggles with another member of your caravan over the cost of delivering several missives and letters to various places on his route.
Apr 22, 2021 3:39 pm
"Apparently it's a local rumor" Alexander says. "I'm not sure how much wait I would give it, we only have one source so far, but it might be worth following up on."
OOC:
Alexander is going to attempt a Loremastery on this, see if there is any history he might no about fire demons.

Alexander shrugs. "Personally they aren't really an area I've covered before, so my knowledge is limited. Maybe I'll have a better idea once we get a better description or a name. 'Fire demo' covers a lot of territory."
Apr 27, 2021 1:56 am
"Hmm," Harper mused, scratching his non-existent beard stubble in contemplation. The aspect of demons wasn't particularly appealing, mostly because of the whole 'demon' bit. But still, a lead's a lead.

"When it comes to matters of the demonic, perhaps it's best to seek an aficianado on the subject," the elf continued in a hushed tone, thumbing coyly towards the priestess. "If anyone knows if there's some truth to the matter, I'd bet a shiny copper the fort's resident clergy may have some idea as to whether the claims are more fact or fiction."
Apr 29, 2021 3:22 pm
Martin takes his turn speaking to the guards at the gate. He's a medium height but heavily muscled dark skinned young man. He's armor looks in great shape and his sword on his back and the blade on his hip seem to catch the light just right. His voice is deep but warm.

"I'm Martin. I'm a paladin, traveling on no particular mission at the moment." To him, it seems most would know that the Paladin's goal is to keep the torch of civilization burning and fight any forces trying to snuff them out.

After he gets inside, Martin is walking through the town trying to figure out where to start helping here, as he hears some talk about Demons.

Much more exciting than run of the mill bandits.

"Hello all. Sorry to interrupt, but I heard you mention some demons. I'm curious to know what you know about that."
May 1, 2021 11:45 pm
"Rumors of demons," Harper amended, granting their previous traveling companion a hearty wave in greeting. The elf was certainly glad to have another heavily armed soul interested in the goings-on of the fort; doubly so if they're of the divinely charged variety.

"I'd like to find out the truth of the matter before we go selling our skills to face otherworldly abominations of the hellish variety," he continued, giving another glance towards the priestess down the way. "Any objections?"
May 3, 2021 6:00 pm
"None here. It's always a good idea to check the legend before reading the map."
May 7, 2021 1:47 pm
Martin nods. He had been wondering from place to place, trying to find something to call to him and he's feeling the tug of adventure calling to him.

"If you don't mind, I'd like to tag along. My name is Martin, by the way. Now, let's get to the bottom of this." He looks around the town and tries to figure out where the best place for him to go get some information on this would be? Perhaps the guard has a headquarters where he can get some information?
May 7, 2021 2:50 pm
There is a large building in the center of the compound, where the officer, priestess, and official are standing, that Martin would guess is the Praetorium, or administrative building of the fort. There is likely to be found the Fort's interior shrine, quartermaster's office, and head Annalist's office. The most likely source of information would be there.
May 8, 2021 12:08 pm
With a cheerful nod, Harper gave the paladin a knowing look of approval. Humans were a strangely bold lot, willing to take risks for and with strangers in equal measure. It was an admirable trait, and it put a gentle smile on the elf's face.

"Well met then, Martin. I am Harper, and you've got my vote. A stout arm and brave heart may just be what we need if the rumors prove true."
May 10, 2021 7:26 pm
Martin meets Harper's smile and returns it along with any others. "Good to meet you Harper." Seeing the Praetorium, Martin nods in that direction.

"I think that's as good a place to start as anywhere. Maybe we can catch the head Annalist and get some information. I'll start asking in there if anyone wants to come, or we can meet back here."

"I'll stand with you, friend," the elf chimed, clearly eager to get to the bottom of this occultish rumor. "If it's a reliable lead, then we've at least got some prospect to set our sights on."

Harper shuffled his back against his shoulder, resting his free hand against the hilt of his sword gingerly. He'd come a long way to get to the frontier, having spent a considerable amount of coin between jobs to make it in one piece. There was no mistaking his restlessness; the doctor was excited to be here. This was opportunity made manifest, and Harper was keen to seize it by the reins.
May 12, 2021 2:57 pm
"I am always up for learning. So I would be honored to accompany you."
May 12, 2021 8:57 pm
Jobyn notes the change of direction they were undergoing with just a mere tilt of his head. It mattered not to him where his friend decided to go and the individuals they would be teaming up with had appeared to be okay folk during that long trip. Still he was a bit concerned as he was not sure how much help he would be if they actually encountered some kind of fire demon.

So are you all heading into the Praetorium then?
May 13, 2021 5:14 pm
OOC:
I think the conclusion is we are all following Martin's lead so wherever he is headed we are going ;)
May 13, 2021 11:36 pm
OOC:
Yes, we'll follow Martin to the Praetorium.
May 17, 2021 2:22 pm
OOC:
Sorry for the delay, things got a little busy the last several days.
As the group heads toward the praesidium the priestess and the official that were standing near its entrance depart, arm in arm. The officer that was with them enters the praesidium with a disappointed look clear on his hard face.

The party enters, passing four heavily armored legionnaires armed with spears and shields, swords hanging at their sides. They say nothing and make no moves as the party enters the building.

Inside, there is a large, open, square space with a tiled floor in the center, open to the sky, and surrounded by simple columns supporting the roof of the building that surround the open area. On the far side of the courtyard is a crosshall, with a raised speaking-platform to the right. Across the crosshall are three rooms, separated from the rest of the building only by bronze, gated fences, allowing clear view into the room and out of them.

The centermost room is an elevated shrine. There, a pair of legionnaires works to remove the statute of Ianna, goddess of war. A veiled replacement stand just outside the gate.

The left room contains a man at a desk, scribbling notes and poring over ledgers. This, by all appearances is the annalist. The room on the right has a low cedar table, and there the Officer from outside is speaking with a large, round man.

The gates to each of these rooms is open.
May 17, 2021 7:45 pm
OOC:
No problem
Martin walks in confidently and quickly, like a man on a mission. While he's happy to defer to all of these men in uniform, he's not cowed or deterred by them. He takes in
the Praetorium, finds the annalist and heads in that direction.

As he approaches the Annalist's desk and clears his throat, giving some notice that he's there for something and allowing the annalist a few seconds to wrap up what he's in the middle of. "Hello sir. My name is Martin. How are you doing today?" It never hurts to be polite... Martin thinks to himself while trying to figure out how exactly to ask about these demons.
May 17, 2021 8:55 pm
The man looks up from his notes and ledgers and gives a squint and a blinks a couple of times as his eyes adjust from his books. He looks slightly annoyed at the interruption at first, but then softens a bit as he regains composure. "Hail and welcome. Eh... I'm, uh, fine, I guess. I am Cornelius Soccolo, chief scribe and annalist here. Uhm... what can I do for you Paladin... oh," noticing suddenly the group of people following Martin, Cornelius looked slightly quizzical for a moment. "Paladin and friends, I see. Ah, are you lot adventurers? That seems to be an increasingly popular profession these days."
May 25, 2021 1:54 pm
"I consider myself a cartographer first and foremost. A scholar, if you want to be less specific. It seems however, that surviving a field mission, no matter how reluctantly started, makes you the go to person for other field missions."
May 25, 2021 4:06 pm
"Yes, that does seem to happen. A reason I have always avoided such tasks. However, as the regions chief historian and cataloguer of lore and law, I am more than happy to assist those that do undertake such things. It seems the local authorities have been looking for more and more people to hire for "field missions," as you put it, these days. I presume that is why you have come to me? Sent on some mission or other by a legate or magistrate? So what can I assist you with?" Cornelius is a slender, pale, bookish man, clearly nearsighted by his spectacles and squinting.
May 25, 2021 7:10 pm
Martin clears his throat and begins to speak. He's quick and concise an almost military style situation report. "We've arrived in town and have already heard some reports of demons in the area. I'm looking for my next... mission as you say, and feel that demons would be worthy of my attention. We were hoping you had some information about them. Where they are, what kind, anything of that nature."
May 25, 2021 9:46 pm
"Demons? Oh my... let me think... yes. Yes, I do recall hearing that. Sighted from Cyfaraun, out in Lake Laman. I believe the rumour was that a Wizard from the college had a tower built on the island some years ago. He became a bit of a recluse and recently great winged fiends have been seen flying over the island, glowing in the night or on cloudy days. I haven't heard of any attacks yet though... If that is your chosen quest, I wish you luck. I must confess I don't know much of demonology. I'm a historian. I would refer you to our local head cleric but..." he looks down at his feet with a disappointed look on his face "... well, we've had a recent change of the guard as it were and I don't think the new head priestess would have much interest in such things... perhaps the Tower of Knowledge in Cyfaraun or the Blade Dancers in Mityethtem might know."His expression changes again, with a small, excited smile on his face and he adds "I must say though, I would be somewhat surprised if the Imperial Vanguard hadn't fixed this demon problem by the time you got there. It's quite exciting to live in an era with real live heroes like Aghilas and Nikolaus doing great deeds like in the old legends, don't you think?"
May 26, 2021 3:33 pm
"Possible rough on the heroes though. "
May 27, 2021 1:20 am
Jobyn continues to stand and listen to what Alex is up to while keeping an eye on the surroundings.
Jun 1, 2021 4:37 pm
Martin nods. "Very exicting. I hope to one day be like those men. But you';ve got to work your way up to it. Tower of Knowledge in Cyfaraun or the Blade Dancers in Mityethtem, you say... Ok."
OOC:
Would Martin know where either of those locations are and how to get there? If not, he'll ask the analyst too.
He looks around to the peole who followed him in here waiting to see if there are any additional questions and if not and he knows where those cities are, he says "Thank you for your help sir." and leaves as quickly as he came.

He stands outside waiting for any who were going to try to catch up to him.
Jun 4, 2021 5:58 pm
Alexander walks along, "I'm due to check in at the Tower eventually anyway." He shrugs. "We might as well walk in that direction."

Jobyn found the excursion interesting but said nothing, and then followed Alexander back outside.
Jun 7, 2021 8:55 pm
OOC:
There are either road signs to both, or directions are easily obtained. No trouble finding the way to either of them. Is there anything you folk would like to do in the fort or the town before traveling elsewhere? And are you set on heading to Cyfaraun?
Jun 8, 2021 7:12 pm
OOC:
I'm curious about timing. It seems like those locations aren't too far away. Would we need to get some provisions or anything is is this just a town over or something and we'll be there in a few hours?
Martin nods to Jobyn, "Well that helps answer to which one we should go. I was just passing through looking for somewhere to be of assistance. Seeing as I may have found that already, I'm ready to head out. Cyfaraun it is. How about anyone else?"

Martin carefully feels his gear, subconsciously really, just making sure he's ready for anything still. And it seems he is.
Jun 8, 2021 10:10 pm
OOC:
It is about a 3 and 1/2 day journey, a day and half away on the road is another decently sized town, Samos. And there may be small villages or hamlets if provisions are needed on the road.
Jun 9, 2021 1:31 pm
"Hmm, of course it isn't local. May I suggest at least spending a little bit of downtime in this town before moving to the next? At the very least, maybe we can find work that leads us in the direction we are intending to go."

OOC:
Gotcha. Thanks
Martin nods to Alexander now. "Yes. That could be a good idea... I'd hate the idea of demons running around unchecked, but it would be even worse to know that we passed over other troubles and this demon thing is a misunderstanding..."

He strokes his chin, thoughtfully, then says "And if I remember correctly, it's about 3 or 4 days to get there, and I don't know about you, but I suspect I'll need provisions to get me there, so perhaps I'll source some of those while we're in town."

Martin looks around to find a place get these provisions and also find another source of gossip. "Do we want to stay the night and leave in the morning? Get a full days march in? Or just gather some more information and head out?"
Jun 10, 2021 6:40 pm
"I would suggest resting here and starting out in the morning as this would give us ample time to get word of the road ahead as well as pick up any other side items of interest. As for provisions in route I should be able to help with those unless the land is totally barren between here and there."

Alexander nods. "Quite true, Jobyn is an excellent hunter. Still no reason not to have backup."
Jun 15, 2021 7:00 pm
Martin looks to the group and says "Ok, I’m going to go find some stuff for myself and try to get some information. You all are welcome to come along. Or if you have some business to attend to, we can meet back at the gate at first light?"

Martin has no problem teaming up with these men, but he doesn’t know them or their plans and doesn’t want to presume on them. So he waits to see what they would like to do before going to the markets.
OOC:
So how do provisions and stuff work here, I think the book says we need 8lbs of water and food a day or something?
Jun 17, 2021 8:47 pm
OOC:
2 lbs food and 1 gallon of water/day. But for the most part rations are sold in daily or weekly allotments in the book. Also, foraging is fairly easy, and hunting can also be done if you want to take a day out of traveling to do it. For the most part though, unless it's more than a week of travel, don't worry about it. It'll just be counted as part of your monthly "living expenses," and we'll assume your food consumption was covered in that. More than a week out of town though, then we will start tracking food consumption and rations etc.
