Raider's Camp

Apr 20, 2021 1:29 pm
In the warm light of day, Governor Nighthill and other leaders want to know as much as possible about those behind the attack on Greenest, and why the town was a target.

The raiders retreated toward the southeast, and their trail is easy to spot. A small, stealthy group could follow the trail to the raiders' camp and gather information. Governor Nighthill approaches you with a proposal:

"If you can locate the raiders' camp and find out certain information, the town can afford to pay yuo 250 gp apiece. We of course, have lost almost everything here. But your work surely deserves whatever reward we can manage.

I want to know where the camp is sited, how many raiders are there, who their leaders are, what's motivating these attacks, and where they plan to strike next.

If you can recover valuables that were stolen from the town, I would like them returned, but I will do my best to arrange a reward from what's left of the town treasury. Recovering treasure, however, is a lesser goal when compared to the other objectives I've brung up."
Apr 20, 2021 4:25 pm
"I want nothing more than to track those responsible and hold them accountable."
Apr 20, 2021 5:03 pm
Food and weapons and a sense of purpose against evil. Those are what every good person needs. However, don't turn down rewards. Heroes have expenses.
Apr 20, 2021 5:12 pm
"I believe I can be in and out fairly easily. The greater good is my motivation. But rewards are nice I will admit."
Apr 20, 2021 5:50 pm
OOC:
you have several rewards at the moment.
-High renown with the citizenry of Greenest
-the Governor as a reliable contact
-any weapons or gear you may need (sorry, but the stables burned to the ground, no mounts are available)
-your experience here, has gotten you to level 2
-Grim has been named as a Knight of Greenest

Grim, Knight of Greenest is ready to proceed with finding the raiders camp lol
Apr 21, 2021 7:03 pm
OOC:
Clarice is ready to go as well.
Apr 21, 2021 8:01 pm
As you get have a bite to eat, check over your gear and prepare to hit the road after the raiders, a young man walks up to you. Limping badly, on his bandaged left leg.

"I hear that you intend to follow the raiders and see where they've gone. I'd like nothing better to come with you, but in this condition, I'd slow you down."

he leans on the rudimentary crutch he put together.

"In the midst of all this tragedy, there's no reason you would have heard about the fate of my master, Leosin Erlanthar, but it's important that you know....

He is a monk from Berdusk. He disappeared last night, after we fought a particularly savage battle against the raiders. A few others and I fought our way back to the keep, barely, Leosin don't make it at all. We went back this morning to look for him, but all we found was his broken staff and this choker, which he always wore."
Apr 21, 2021 8:08 pm
If you describe him, we will keep an eye out for him. Best case scenario, he is a hidden asset. If he is wounded or a prisoner, we will attempt to rescue him.
Apr 21, 2021 11:04 pm
"Did these attackers take any other prisoners that you're aware of? They didn't seem too interested in anything other than killing innocents last night. What makes this Leosin so special?"
Apr 23, 2021 3:14 am
Do you mind if we take the choker with us? Grim questions the man If hes still alive, we could possibly us e it to let him know we aren't his enemies. If we can't find him, I'll be sure to return it to you.
Apr 23, 2021 7:47 pm
the young man provides you with a very detailed description, and hands over the choker.

"good thinking" he says "he will surely recognize this"

the choker is a braided leather neckband with a silver dragon design chased into the leather. The ends are ragged, as if roughly torn off.

"Leosin has been investigating these raiders for months. I fear that he might have tried to infiltrate their group when they retreated, or worse, was captured and carried away as a prisoner. No one understands these bandits better than he does, and his knowledge will be invaluable against them. When you find their camp, please look for any sign that Leosin is there.
One of my brothers has already departed for Berdusk to bring back help, but it will be many days before help arrives. Anything you can do before then would be a godsend."

We will do our best. Evil like this must be stopped.
Apr 23, 2021 8:29 pm
Summoning her familiar forward from its own dimension, a white cat appears just in front of Clarice's feet.

"Stay a bit ahead of the group now, Zsa and let us know if there's any danger approaching."

The cat gives her master a harsh glare and a small hiss in protest to being summoned back to the material world, but reluctantly does as she's told, trotting out about thirty or so feet in front of the group.

"I'm ready. Uriza's death will not go unpunished!" she says, clutching her old friend's amulet in her hand.
Apr 23, 2021 9:02 pm
Setting out from Greenest, the townsfolk all wish you well, but it is a sombre occasion. The best they can hope for is you avenge the deaths of their friends and loved ones.

Bards on the parapets of the keep play an inspiring battle march, that fades into silence as you leave the town.

The raiders path is easy to follow across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. A wide swath of grass is trampled down and littered with items thrown away by the raiders.

Clarice's wee cat is about 30' ahead of the group.

Apr 25, 2021 4:01 pm
OOC:
Two pairs should be good I think. How about Linston and Grim up front, Clarice and Elceran behind?
Apr 25, 2021 10:09 pm
OOC:
I'm ok with that :)
Apr 27, 2021 1:38 pm
The trail is simple to follow. Human, kobold and drake footprints are everywhere. The weather is cool and clear, and travel is easy. The trail leads south about twelve miles, to a more rugged region where steep sided, rocky plateaus replace the gently rolling hills. The land between the plateaus is largely flat, broken only by outcroppings and wandering streams in deep gullies.

As you march a small plume of smoke appears a mile or two ahead of you.
Apr 27, 2021 6:24 pm
Zsa, move towards the smoke and then return to report back if there’s danger.

"They couldn’t be that brazen, could they?" she asks to the group. "It’s got to be a group of hunters or travelers."
OOC:
Clarice will order her familiar forward far ahead of the group to take a peek. I’ll leave it to the DM as to Zsa’s fate. :-)
Apr 27, 2021 7:00 pm
it will take a cat about an hour to cover that distance and back. is there anything you want be doing that time?
Apr 27, 2021 7:24 pm
OOC:
I had planned on continuing to trudge forward, figuring Zsa could leg it ahead of the group a bit and find them along the trail on the way back from the smoke. I hadn’t intended to keep the group from moving.
Apr 27, 2021 9:42 pm
In case ot is the raiders, maybe we should wait here in a hidden spot. They may have outriders.

the cat pitter-ptters off into the distance as you take a more defensive approach to movement. You've gotten about a half mile closer to the smoke plume by the time the cat returns. Apparently none the worse for wear.
Apr 29, 2021 7:42 pm
Clarice stops in her tracks and puts her hands on her hips, staring at the little white cat.

Well, Zsa? Anything of interest ahead?

You left Greenest at dawn and have travelled about 12 miles. It's not quite mid-day yet.

We can try to attack them on two fronts, as they aren't likely to be really sleeping this time of day. Though 2v6 still seems like it would be difficult
May 1, 2021 5:23 am
Well, I can lead with burning hands hope to get a couple out. The ranged weapons for a turn at least while they close and we back away. Could work.

as you get near, the smoke is rising from a depression amidst a jumble of house sized boulders. The cultists and kobolds are indeed roasting some kind of birds over an open fire, but they seem to disagree on the method and are squabbling amongst themselves.

The human cultists see to think they're in charge, and are shouting insults, and making threatening gestures toward the little kobolds.

The human's swords are stacked in a tee-pee style about 25 feet away from the fire, the kobolds wear daggers and slings on their belts.

With all the shouting and bickering, they seem unaware of their surroundings.

the cultists are occupied with their bullying of the kobolds, but on Clarice's last step, a small twig snaps under foot. They hear it, but it echoes off the rocks around them and they look exactly the opposite way from your adavance.

The kobolds seize the opportunity to grab a few hens and run off to eat their lunch in peace. They're too busy with their caper to see the cultists begin to doze off.

As the scan the land ahead of you, two of them begin to buckle, they say somthing, not quite in complete words, as they half sit, half fall into the grass.

Like a mob of bullies in a school yard, you descend on the cultists. It may seem cruel, but only to someone who hadn't seen what these monsters did to Greenest last night.

Their hide is removed in chunks by a whip, as the their bones are broken by a staff and their flesh skewered by crossbow bolts, they crumple to the ground, with a dozen fatal wounds each.

kobolds aren't strong, obviously, but they aren't stupid either. They know the hens they stole can easily be taken back, if the once the humans realize they're missing. So they're devouring them like they have never eaten before, it's a mishmash of greasy claws, drool, and snapping jaws. Not to mention the belching, farting, and shoving. Only one of the them looks up, as a crossbow bolt whizzes over their heads. But, they all jump to attention as the second bolt lands with a 'think' and buries itself in the grass right in their midst.

One, on the edge of the group, turns just in time to see Grim's whip slicing through the air, and ducks with not a second to spare. It grins like an idiot for a moment, before Elceran's staff crushes it's head.

Everyone is snapped into fight mode as Elceran spins and his elbow breaks the neck of another of the little dragons.

these weren't wealthy, powerful members of the raiding army. Searching all the bodies accumulates 28sp. A few cheap weapons, and a burlap sack with four pewter candlesticks and a silver serving dish worth about 4gp.

A marching army would regularly travel with a rear guard that, well, guards the rear. This clearly isn't it. This is pretty obviously a small group of slackers that just couldn't keep up with the main force.

Lathander has spoken to me. There is a well dug in rear guard in the gully. If we attack there are 3 outcomes, none good. We lose, we win but some get away and warn the camp, or we kill them all but the camp is warned because the guards have gone silent.

Our best bet is to sneak past them and the main camp will not be expecting us.

The tracks lead straight into the gully, high wall of jagged rocks and boulders squeeze in on either side. The gully appears to have been formed by years of flood waters, and runs fairly straight and gently downwards.

Avoiding it completely, our heroes at least think finding the other end and picking up the trail again should be pretty straight forward. They cut themselves a wide berth, crouching low and moving through the tall grass slowly, while always keeping their eyes on the tallest rocks, and their ears open. Trusty Zsa padding along behind them by a few hundred feet, just in case.
May 28, 2021 9:19 pm
Linston keeps the group on track, and guides them a few miles ahead. Once the boulders that form the gully disappear from view, he leads the group back to the tracks left by the raiders.

The group pauses here, keeping quiet and out of sight, when Zsa rejoins them with nothing to report, the journey towards the raiders camp continues.

You make good time across the grasslands. No more guards or stragglers are seen. After a few hours, a dozen miles further along, plumes of smoke come into view. A sloping ridge ahead of you provides a good vantage point.

The smoke plumes, of course, are emanating from the encampment.

The cultists have built their base in the hollow of a rocky plateau that's roughly shaped like a horseshoe. The lower portion of the plateau rises gently from the surrounding land, but it quickly steepens and ascends to a height of 150 feet above the landscape. Boulders form jumbled heaps at the bases of the cliffs. The level shelves and top of the plateau are covered in long grass, brush and scrubby trees grow in patches.

Two rough timber guard towers have been built, one at the mouth of the hollow, and one on a higher plateau. Circles of various sizes of canvas tents are everywhere in the hollow. Many with cooking fires amongst them.

May 29, 2021 5:33 pm
Trying to count, Clarice scans the camp. There are humans and kobolds milling around, from robe wearing cultists to very average looking people, but they mix in a way making them impossible to count. There are about 40 tents from small 10' wide ones to large 25' ones.

it appears that there are prisoners chopping fire wood, near the base of the west guard tower. 8 of them, that you can see. Guarded by four of those half-dragon looking humanoids.

you can't see any leaders, but the largest tent is the easternmost one. It is set apart from all the others, and has four guards, each with a guard drake.

Zsa, please investigate the guard tower and let us know how many guards are there. Return quickly and be safe.
Jun 15, 2021 4:44 pm
Zsa toddles off like she doesn't have a care in the world. She walks into the camp like she owns the place, and even pauses to let a cultist scratch her chin.

She avoids the kobolds, who are known cat eaters, and takes a good long look at the west tower. Then turns around, and heads back.

She curls herself around Clarice's ankle, and with an arched back and a purr, says

"there is no one there darling. But the smell is still ghastly..."

Somewhat stunned by the lack of reaction to her presence, Clarice takes a moment to gather herself and then continues towads the prisoners that are chopping wood near the base of the tower.

Stay back, Zsa. If something happens, find the others.

She walks up right besides one of the Kobolds guarding the prisoners and without addressing it or even looking in its directions she calls over to the prisoners.

"I need four of you to come with me. There's work that needs to be done and you've had it too easy just chopping wood all day!!"

She fumbles with her belt and ammunition pouch and hands them to one of the prisoners.

Jun 29, 2021 1:48 pm
looking around the camp, it seems everyone is armed. Amid the cultists are large groups of mercenaries and bandits, obviously hired for the raids. The only unarmed people you've seen are the prisoners.

It's pretty clear that most of the people in this camp are strangers to each other. And while they seem to be organizing both the camp and the defences for the night, this post raid return time is chaotic and no one seems to know (or care) what anyone else is doing.

there are lots of Kobolds here, how can you have a dragon cult without them? But they don't seem to be liked, or trusted by the other races

there is a cave mouth in the furthest western edge of the camp. It's roped off and well guarded.
Jul 2, 2021 5:20 pm
as the group cautiously, but casually, saunters towards the 'back' of the camp, to the west. A few cultists raise salutes to you. Five fingers outstretched on a raised arm, as they bark "praise Tiamat's glory!"

While some of the cultists appear to be hardened veterans, most are young, and look desperate to make a good impression.

Moving to the "back" of the encampment, it is quickly impossible to miss the elfin monk, tied to the stake. He has been severely beaten, and denied food and water. But he is alive.

At the moment, no one is "attending" to him. But it certainly doesn't look like they're done with him yet.

The camp has gotten really quiet the last hour or so. Everyone crashing after an adrenaline fuelled night of raiding. No one seems to have even noticed a missing group of slaves.

There are small cooking fires here and there. A few bandits and mercenaries sitting about, stirring the ashes while chatting quietly. You realize how tired and hungry you lot are. Not having stopped or eaten since leaving Greenest this morning.

Looking about, Linston notices the guard positions are being filled, and the non-existent security is being replaced by a well organized night watch; at the gates, the perimeter and in the towers.

he pats Clarice on the head patronizingly (is there any other way?) and hisses "don't......dissapoint us...." before stepping aside, and gesturing to the gate guard to let you through.

"What a charitable lot.. Any of you know anything about hunting?"
Jul 14, 2021 10:50 pm
I figured we would just hide in the woods until they left and then check out the cave. But to answer your question...I can hunt.
OOC:
There is no hunting skill. Does Survival count?
Jul 14, 2021 11:14 pm
"Never hunted in my life. Hiding in the woods works for me, they'll just assume we got lost or killed."
Jul 15, 2021 1:51 pm
OOC:
if you actually intend to hunt....

Grim is an outlander, and can find small game to feed up to 6 people automatically. Then we have an urchin and two entertainers. No rangers or druids. So yes a survival check would be the first step.

if you plan on just hiding out, waiting for the army to leave, Grim can keep you all fed

OOC:
My vote is to hide out.

Jul 15, 2021 8:44 pm
OOC:
Clarice is all for hiding!
Jul 15, 2021 8:55 pm
OOC:
since no one is looking for you, hiding will not be difficult. But it may be...uncomfortable.

The ground around the area is rolling and craggy, lots of crevices and large boulders to hide among. But waiting may take several days. And a fire or shelter would be seen instantly.

Let me know how far away from the camp you want to move, and how you want to spend your time waiting, and I'll let you know, well, how it goes....
Jul 15, 2021 9:16 pm
OOC:
I would ask if we could make it to town and back, but we don't know when they're leaving. So idk.
Jul 15, 2021 9:17 pm
OOC:
you could.... you made it from town to the camp in one (long) day.
Jul 15, 2021 10:53 pm
OOC:
Clarice would argue to stay close, strike shortly after the baddies march out.
Jul 16, 2021 12:04 am
I say we stay an hour away from camp. Close enough to check on it, but far enough away that random patrols won't run into us. Somewhere hidden, and not where hunting parties would go.
Jul 16, 2021 12:15 am
"Let’s get to it then. I wouldn’t mind putting some distance between us and this camp!"

Agreed. There isn't much we can do here it seems.
Jul 21, 2021 3:32 pm
A few shouts from the camp can be heard as the group saunters out

"no more damn rabbits! we need some meat with some fat on it!"

"try to find some eggs!"

etc. etc.

as soon as the camp is out of sight, the group moves cautiously away. The ground is rolling, tall grasses with a few trees here and there. Giant boulders, bigger than houses, jut out of the ground. And crevasses with little rivers running through them cross the landscape from time to time.

Hiding, at least from the camp, seems pretty straight forward. Keeping an eye on it, a little less so. There are also all the typical things to consider sleeping out in the open on the Sword Coast.

Let me know how you plan to handle comfort, provisions, stealth, security, surveillance, etc. and give me an appropriate roll:
stealth, survival, perception or nature. Whichever makes the most sense, or you are the best at.

Finding what passes as a comfortable spot besides one of the large rocks, Clarice will spend any free time studying her spell book, resting, and playing with Zsa. While not as proficient as the others at scouting and keeping watch, she will still do her part, circling the camp at a distance during her turn and keeping an eye out for trouble.

When Elceran goes to scout the camp, Clarice will send Zsa to tag a long behind - just in case there is any trouble.

OOC:
A thought just occurred to me when thinking what to do during this time. Would it be possible to throw two daggers at once?
Jul 22, 2021 2:22 pm
OOC:
Grim does not require a roll to find enough food to get by. (outlander background)

I would think you could throw two daggers, (one with each hand or two with one hand) and follow the same rules as duel wielding, but with ranged attacks
Jul 30, 2021 5:51 pm
OOC:
sorry guys, I fell off the radar there
the group has prepared a small, simple camp, a few bedrolls and a cold dinner as a cooking fire would be way too risky. Clarice and Zsa are quietly reading, while Grim is preparing some mushrooms and truffles he found for a meal.

It eyes wee Clarice for an instant and swipes at her with its long, sharp claws, before spinning on Grim and snapping at the man who whipped him with a fiercely sharp beak.

Clarice is knocked several feet to the left, as crimson streaks appear across her arm, but she manages to stay on her feet. The beak of the beast reaches for Grim's arm, but misses and sinks itself into his belly. Blood of a worryingly deep red soaking through his tunic.

The scene is blood soaked chaos.

Runninig and screaming, Linston and Elceran are stopped dead in their tracks. When a low rumble like thunder in the distance causes the ground beneath them to tremble.

The beast ignores the pain of the whip to disembowel the little wizard, but it too is startled by the rumble. It raises it's head, looks briefly to the horizon....

then BOLTS! Loping off in the other direction, bloody footprints in it's wake.

Clarice and Grim can't see what's happening. But Linston and Elceran do.

An army is on the march.

The ground shakes beneath the hundreds and hundreds of boots. Wagons. Drakes. The mouth of the camps spews forth more and more. Smoke rising from torches, flags unfurling. A low chant begins to rise.

"hail. hail. Hail. Hail. HAIL. HAIL. HAIL. HAIL...."

Clarice! It is so good to see you again.

Suddenly the vision of the Golden Hills, Baervan, and of her recently departed friend start to fade.

NO! No...

"Thanks once again, my friend."

our plucky heroes dive for cover, even where there isn't any. Grim presses Clarice into a crack in the rocks, where he huddles over her and administers healing.

Elceran and Linston have no choice but to eat dirt. Use every ounce of their strength to push themselves as close to the earth as possible, and hope the grass does the rest.

The massive owl bear screeches as it flees, making a noise not even an army can miss, but it seems that flushing out wildlife is not unusual to them....

The scouts and spotters that will march at the van, have not even got themselves into position yet. And this close to camp have no expectations of anything to see.

So the thunder continues.

The chanting continues.

Louder, LOUDER, then quieter again. No one dares even raise their head to peek, until the rumble is truly fading into the distance.

It seems to take forever. But when the army has gone, the sun is still low in the sky, and it's still only morning....
Aug 24, 2021 10:30 pm
Elceran only waits a moment more before standing up and starting a low sprint towards where their small camp was.
Aug 24, 2021 11:06 pm
After the din of the marchers to dissipate Clarice pokes her head out of the crevice to see if she can catch a glimpse of Elceran or Linston.

"Have you seen the others?" she asks Grim.
Aug 25, 2021 3:42 am
Is everyone OK? Man, that was too close.
Aug 25, 2021 5:25 pm
OOC:
Everyone is alive, and the danger, seemingly, has passed. The army is gone, and for now, the dust cloud they kick up tells you how far away they are.

The owl bear has left a trail of bloody claw prints across the grass land, and it heads straight for the horizon. (sorry, an owl bear is a bit much for 4 level 2 characters, my mistake)

You have no idea where the army might be headed, but there is no town closer to this camp than Greenest. (where you just came from) and the army took a day to travel there, a day to attack the town, and a day to travel back. So it seems, you have a window of at least three days to work with here.

What's the plan?
Aug 25, 2021 6:24 pm
"I'm good now... thanks to Grim."

Clarice watches the dust cloud in the distance before turning her attention back to the others.

Elceran helps pack up camp so they can get moving.
Aug 25, 2021 9:47 pm
I am pretty sure the monk wanted us to destroy the eggs. If we take them, they could fall into the wrong hands. And, for what it's worth, I would think they would be damn hard to train.
Aug 25, 2021 10:18 pm
"We destroy them!" Clarice says without hesitation.

"The less of those evil things in the world the better."
Aug 26, 2021 1:32 am
Elceran shrugs "Not all dragons are evil, you know?"
Aug 26, 2021 3:34 pm
The group licks their wounds, and packs their gear, preparing to re-enter the now almost empty camp.

I did say, almost...

while attempting to enter the hatchery with the army in place would have been impossible. Having them away does not mean this will be a walk in the park.

You will need to prepare for the greatest challenge of your lives. Tighten your armour, sharpen your weapons, proof read your spell book, and...
