ESCAPE FROM MOS SHUUTA

It is a period of unrest and opportunity in the galaxy. The Galactic Empire struggles to maintain control in the midst of civil war. Meanwhile, scoundrels and smugglers, explorers and expatriates, and fringers of all types scramble for a living on the edges of galactic civilization. It is a hard life, but these renegades have more freedom and opportunity than any citizen of the Core Worlds.

On the desert world of TATOOINE, a few such renegades have run afoul of a local crime boss, TEEMO THE HUTT. Trapped in the tiny spaceport of Mos Shuuta, the renegades have no choice but to steal a starship and flee Teemo's forces. Fortunately, a suitable starship has recently docked at the landing bay: a freighter called the KRAYT FANG, captained by a Trandoshan slaver named Trex. As they flee through the suns-baked streets, the renegades duck into the local cantina to hide from their pursuers...
You step down a short flight of stairs into the cantina's shadowy common room, the cool air a blessed relief from the scorching heat of Tatooine. The Devaronian bartender pauses his chores to stare at you, his devilish features intimidating. On a stage against the far wall, a Twi'lek woman dances to recorded music. Private booths line the walls, and the cantina floor is scattered with tables and chairs. A few patrons turn in their seats to stare at you. The only other exits you see from the room are what looks to be a storage closet in one corner and a doorway behind the Twi'lek dancer. The arched roof above you is supported by thick, heavy struts. You only have a few moment to find a hiding place before Teemo's thugs arrive. What do you do?

At this point each character has a chance to take a single action (hide, blend in, or whatever else you'd like to do) before the goons arrive. When setting up your dice pool for the roll, pick the appropriate skill for what you're trying to do (most of the time the skill you want is obvious, other times we may need to discuss) and then add a single purple die for the difficulty.

Every character should also gain two strain for running through the dusty street in a hurry.

Lowhhrick looks around and growls out and points for the door behind the Twi'lek dancer and starts to head in that direction. Calmly moving patrons out of his way when he can, but sometimes it isn't so easy.

As you get closer to the stage the dancer stops her routine and moves to block the doorway. In a defiant pose, with her hands on her hips she gives each of you a quick once over.

"Sorry, Gentlemen. Back stage is for performers only... and none of you appear to be the type of entertainment people here are looking for."

"Hard to tell, dressed like that, Honey" the dancer quips back at Oskara, her hands still firmly planted on her hips.

The crowd is starting to grow restless with the current lack of entertainment they are now experiencing.

In order to convince/coerce the the dancer to allow the group to pass, we'll need either a Coerce or Charm check against 1 Purple die.

To create a dice pool, check the appropriate skill and the characteristic that it's based on. So for Pash to Charm the dice pool would start with Green die equal to the greater of the Ranks of Charm OR the Value of Presence. Since his presence is 3, the die pool starts with three Green die. Then you take the lower of those two, in Pash's case this would by Ranks for Charm, which is one, and change (or Upgrade) that many Green die to Yellow. So for Pash to Charm the team's way past the dancer his dice pool would be:

1Yellow, 2Green, 1Purple - They'd be rolled and we count success/failures/etc and work out what meaning it all has.

Lowhhrick who happens to be eye level with the dancer now blocking his way, throws his arms up in the air, clearly frustrated at being stopped by this woman. Roaring out his complaints and pointing at the door and at the dancer, he looks toward the entrance and turns back to the dancer and gestures saying they just want to leave before someone gets hurt. Clearly getting angrier by the moment.

The dancer inches closer to Pash, looking him directly in the eye before giving him a quick wink. She starts right back into her routine and as she dances towards the center of the stage she says.

"There's no way out back there, but you're welcome to hide for a spell. Just don't touch anything, and keep that one's fur off the the outfits!"

Opening the door you're hit with an overwhelming combination of smells, the predominant being a mixture of perfume and some sort of burnt herb. You are all able to cram into the room, it's a tight fit, but it will work - for now.

Peeking through the door just seconds after hiding away you see a small troupe of pig-like Gamorreans carrying heavy, bone-breaking clubs step through the front door of the cantina - Teemo's enforcers! They blink their beady eyes in the gloom, peering about. Then, seeing nothing of interest, the grunt to each other in their primitive language and turn to go. You know they'll keeping looking for you until you take them out.

So, every roll you make is going to be against a difficulty set by your friendly GM (or grumpy GM, in my case). This is obviously easier to work out face to face, so what I've done in SW games on here in the past is have the players assume a 2P difficulty when making checks like these (and I can adjust as needed). So, for the big wookie to have a chance to find something like that, he would roll a Perception check.

Since Perception is based on Cunning you would take the largest of either your Cunning value, or the ranks in Perception. Lowhhrick has 0 rank in Perception, so you'd start with Cunning, which is 2, so two Green dice. You'd then change 1 Green die to a Yellow die for every rank you have in Perception - so none. (Higher number is Green dice, lower number is Green to Yellow - doesn't matter if Skill Rank or Characteristic Value is higher - the higher always supplies the initial number of Green dice).

The die pool for the roll would then be 2 Green and 2 Purple dice. You'd roll and we'd determine the outcome from there.

You can also have other characters assist you in your efforts. If we're in structured play (Combat rounds, for example) one player could use a Maneuver to assist another player and an extra Blue die would be added to the pool. If we're in open play (such as now) you can make a combined check where one character uses a high Characteristic while the other player provides the matching high ranks of a Skill.

A quick search of the dressing room reveals items that would more than likely draw attention to anyone brave enough to wear them than anything concealing. Lowhhrick, however, is able to find a single, old duster coat. While it doesn't offer much in the way of protection it may be enough to help one of the smaller members of crew blend in a bit more.

Filtering back into the dining area of the small cantina the Devaronian barkeep approaches and laughs a brittle little laugh. "I guess you're folks who need to get off the planet in a hurry. The good news for you is that I happen to know that there's a freighter in Landing Bay Aurek right now. The bad news is that its captain, Trex, is an associate of the Hutt's and won't just let you leave. The other bad news is that the reason I know it's still in the landing bay is that it has a broken hypermatter reactor igniter and won't be flying anywhere until it gets a new one installed. I bet Vorn over at the junk shop has one."

He then points to the door. "Now get out of my cantina!"

Pash grabs the duster and puts it on. Motioning for the others to follow, he leads the way to the front door. Looking out carefully, Pash checks to see that it's clear. We need to check both places out, I say we head towards the junk shop first. There's no sense in looking for a ship..if we don't have the part to fix it.

Vorn, an older human gentlemen, is hunched over a low counter as you all enter the low pour-stone building. Clearly occupied with whatever project he is working on, he barely raises an eyebrow when Lowhhrick starts banging on the counter. Sliding his mag-goggles onto his head he stands up and walks past an astromech, giving it a swift kick as he does.

"R5! You're supposed to warn me when customers enter. Now get out and finish stripping that wrecked speeder in the yard!"

Dusting himself off as he approaches the counter he looks the wookie in the eyes and then glances over to the others.

"What's he want? I don't speak furball."

Vorn is a little more difficult than just two purple to deceive, so I'm going to replace the first Purple die on Oskara's roll with a Red. As Vex has already asked about purchasing the part I'll add a Black setback die, and since Vorn doesn't speak Wookie, I'll throw in a Blue boost die for confusing the poor shop keep.

Vorn’s obviously confused listening to three people talk at once holds up his hand to shush the all of those involved.

He looks at Oskara and studies her for a few moments before reaching under the counter.

"Trex did mention that he was looking to pick up some crew while in Mos Shuuta, must have found some." he declares as he hands over one shiny hypermatter reactor igniter.

Just as the transaction is complete the door swings open and an onrushing Gamorrean, ax in hand, comes into the store.

Oskara should take two strain (one for each Threat from the roll).
Everyone should roll initiative. As you weren't aware that Lowhhrick's voice carries a bit and tipped off Teemo's thugs to your location. (Despair)

Initiative in this case will be a Simple (No Purple) Vigilance Roll - More Successes the better - Advantages are tie breakers.
The Gamorreans act as a Minion Group and have shared initiative slot and a Wound Threshold Pool.

Nope. The roll should be one Yellow and One Green.

Here's why:

The Vigilance Skill is based on the Willpower Characteristic. So whenever you're making a skill check you find the appropriate Skill Level and corresponding Characteristic Value. For Lowhhrick that would be 1 Vigilance and 2 Willpower.

Then you take the higher of the two numbers, so 2 in this case, and that is the starting number of Green Dice to use. You then take the lower number and replace that many of the Green Dice with Yellow Dice (This is called Upgrading your dice pool).

So Vigilance for Lowhhrick would be 1Y and 1G.

Hope that makes sense. Go ahead and make another roll when ready.

I’m the same. When I was first learning this game I had to read the die pool section three or four times and play with some dice before it finally clicked.

Initiative does not determine individual PC order, but rather PC and NPC slots. With the above rolls the initiative order would be:

During a Round every PC will get one turn. When that turn occurs within the round is entirely up to the players. When a PC slot comes active ANY player that has yet to have a turn during the round can go. This order can change every round as well, so it's possible that say Pash acts last during round 1, but first during round 2 - this can be pretty useful from time to time.
During your turn you can take one Action and make one Maneuver.

An Action is anything that requires a die roll (Attacking, trying to slice a door lock, etc.).
A Maneuver is anything that requires a non-insignificant amount of time to do. This includes drawing/readying a weapon, moving, aiming, etc.

You CAN gain a second Maneuver in one of three ways (but can NEVER have more than two per turn)
1) Give up your Action for a Maneuver.
2) Suffer 2 Strain.
3) Spend two Advantages from your Action die roll.

For example, in the current situation a character could:
1) Maneuver: Draw a Pistol.
2) Suffer 2 strain to get a second Maneuver.
3) Maneuver: Aim (adds a boost die to your attack roll).
4) Action: Attack.
To conduct an attack you first choose one of the weapons on your sheet. Each weapon will have a corresponding skill to use when you make an attack, a damage value, range, and a critical value. The skills work just like before, find the skill and the corresponding characteristic and build your dice pool.

Difficulties of attacks are ALWAYS based on range:
ENGAGED - MELEE/BRAWL: 2 Purple
ENGAGED - RANGED LIGHT: 2 Purple
ENGAGED - RANGED HEAVY: 3 Purple
SHORT - RANGED: 1 Purple
MEDIUM - RANGED: 2 Purple
LONG - RANGED: 3 Purple
EXTREME - RANGED: 4 Purple

So for VEX to hit a target at Medium range with a Light Blaster the die pool would be:
2 Green (Ranged-Light Skill[0] - Agility Characteristic[2]) and 2 Purple (Medium Ranage)

If VEX takes a maneuver to aim, an extra Blue die would be added to the pool.

Any hit (at least one success) would cause the base damage of the gun (5) plus the number of successes.
Range Bands:
Engaged: Close enough to touch.
Short: Several meters. Moving to anywhere within short range requires one maneuver (to close to Engaged for example).
Medium: Several dozen meters. Moving from short to medium range requires one maneuver.
Long: Further than a few dozen meters. Moving from medium to long requires two maneuvers.
Extreme: Furthest range at which two targets can interact. Moving from long to extreme requires two maneuvers.

The Gamorrean pauses just for a second as its beady little eyes try to adjust to the darkness of the shop. It grunts to the others who all start to head towards the doorway, but his momentary pause gives the heroes a chance to act before the thug can get in the first strike.

Knowing what is about to happen Vorn takes cover behind his counter and pleads. "Just don't break anything!!

So looking at Oskara's weapon it has a base Damage of 9, so with the 2 successes, that's 11 total damage. Since the enemies you're fighting are a Minion Group, they have a shared Wound Threshold pool, so any carry over won't be wasted.

The Gamorreans have a Soak value of 3, which means the 11 damage is reduced to 8 and then applied to the group's shared Wound Threshold. As each Gamorrean has a Wound Threshold of 6, this will kill one outright and apply 2 damage to the rest of the group. (Group's Wound Threshold goes from 24 to 16.)

Now, with the 6 Advantage you have several options:
1) Activate a weapon quality.
2) Reduce Stress (1 Stress per Advantage used in this fashion).
3) Give a Boost (Blue) die for ANY Allied player to use (2 Advantage)
4) Give a Boost (Blue) die to the NEXT Allied player to use (1 Advantage)
5) Any other thing we might come up with that makes sense!

In this case, if you spend 3 Advantage (which is your weapon's Critical Rating), you'll score a Critical Hit on the group, which will automatically kill another minion, reducing their Group Wound Threshold by 6. You could then spend 2 more Advantage to reduce your Stress to 4, and spend the last Advantage to allow whoever goes next to add a Boost die to whatever check they make.

The choice is yours.

Any Advantage that you don't spend is wasted. And everyone will have a chance to recover some Stress at the end of the encounter automatically.

Quick on his pistol Pash wastes no time dropping the third member of Teemo's crew with a well placed blaster bolt.

The remaining thug is determined to cause some damage and rushes the wookie, swinging its weapon with all of its might. Lowhhrick is unable to deflect the blow which strikes him hard just above the hip.

The base damage of the Gamorrean's weapon is 5, plus the two success of its attack roll gives us 7 damage. Fortunately for Lowhhrick his Soak value is 4, so only 3 Wound damage done!

Vorn rises slowly from his position behind the counter and takes in the scene.

Vibro-Axe has a base damage of 7, with 1 total success -> 8. Thugs have a Soak of 3 BUT the Vibro-Axe has a "Pierce 2" quality, which means the first two point of Soak are ignored. 7 total damage, pig-thug is no more.

As this is the end of the encounter everyone can roll to reduce Strain. You can choose between a Simple (no Purple) Discipline or Cool check. Each success reduces your Strain by 1 - (A full night's rest will reduce Strain to 0).

EDIT: Actually roll TWICE to reduce stain - as the first action in the Cantina was an encounter as well.

Larger number is the starting number of Green dice. (2 in both cases here). The lower number is the number of Green dice replaced with Yellow dice - This is referred to Upgrading the Skill check.
And it doesn't matter if the Characteristic or the Rank in Skill is larger, which ever is larger, that's the number of Green dice to start with and the lower number is the number of Green -> Yellow replacements.

So for your example:

Discipline (2 Will - 2 Green Dice) -> 1 Rank (1 Green to Yellow) = 1 Green 1Yellow
Cool (2 Presence - 2 Green Dice) -> 0 Rank (0 Green to Yellow) = 2 Green

(I just showed Discipline in the previous post as it was the better option for Lowhhrick. :-))

It depends on the situation, but I’ve found that for PbP play that it moves things along quicker if a player can assume 2 Purple for a difficulty. We can always adjust as needed. Combat is usually pretty easy as the Difficulty is Range based - Melee 2P, Short 1P, Medium 2P, Long 3P, Extreme 4P.

Most non-combat check Difficulties against NPCs are based on the NPC’s Skill/Characteristics. So if Lowhhrick is trying to Deceive someone, the difficulty would correspond to that NPCs Vigilance Skill. (These are called Opposed Checks).

It takes a while to get into a natural flow when learning the system, but once it sticks, things move along pretty quickly. The first three or four sessions I ran for my local group were spent mostly on learning how the dice work. :-)

The process of slicing into the network comes easy for VEX and its a matter of mere seconds before the flickering images from the security cameras in Landing Bay Aurek appear on the terminal.

A rusty looking freighter sits in the center of the large landing bay with its ramp fully extended and lowered. Two equally rusty looking security droids are patrolling the area between the ramp and the entrance into the landing bay. There is no sign of the Trandoshan in the footage.

The narrow streets of Mos Shuuta are crowded with people and the trip to Landing Bay Aurek is not a particularly quick one. Just as your arriving at your destination a Lambda Class Shuttle slowly buzzes overhead, heading in the direction of Landing Bay Besh on the other side of town.

Through the open hanger doors of Aurek sits the ship just as it appeared on the security footage, but with the more up close and personal view you can now see the landing clamps in place that Vorn had alluded to earlier. Even with a new Hypermatter Reactor Igniter installed the freighter won't be going anywhere until those clamps are released at Spaceport Control.

The droid does not repsond to the wookie immediately, instead standing perfectly still as its lighthed eyes flash for several seconds - a clear signal that it has engaged its interal communications mechanism.

"Spaceport Control has not rescinded lockdown of the Krayt Fang. Your information is incorrect."

Both droids stand their ground, blocking entrance into the landing bay.

"We will need visual confirmation that you are in possession of one Hypermatter Reactor Igniter before you will be allowed to proceed."

In the landing bay, two more droids emerge from the ship, walking down the ramp and taking up positions on either side. Behind them a large Transdoshan follows.

Stopping part way down the ramp, the scaly creature crouches down to get a better view of the visitors. His hand pats his holstered blaster as he looks on.

A quick look reveals to Lowhhrick that the weapons used by the droids are built-in to their arms, so there is nothing to gather up. The Wookie does make it up the ramp, raising it behind him.

As Oskara leads the way to the cockpit she catches a glimpse of the large Trandoshan, blaster in hand as he squeezes the trigger. The bolt hits her hard in the shoulder; another couple of hits like that and she knows she'll be out of this fight.
OOC:
Oskara takes 9 damage minus her 4 soak.
Trex is in the cockpit and in cover. Any ranged combat against him will suffer 1 Setback die.
Pash is heading towards the medical bay and has just passed the outside of the Galley.
Oskara is leading the way to the cockpit with Vex close behind.

Oskara and Trex continue their fight, each inflicting nasty hits to the other. While the Twi'lek is hurting and her head is ringing, she's not out of the fight quite yet. The continued grunting and cursing from the cockpit reveals that Trex isn't fairing too well himself.

Oskara also suffers "Slightly Dazed" and is Disoriented until the end of the encounter. (add a Setback (Black) die to all checks).

To install the HMRI someone will have to make an Average (2P) Mechanics check. Both locks outside of the ship can be removed manually. each requiring an Upgraded Hard (1Red/2Purple) Mechanics check and about 10 minutes of time. Failure of the check will most likely raise an alarm.

Once everyone is on board VEX raises the ramp. The blaster fire stops as suddenly as it started and you can hear the muffled voices outside as the ramp closes. One of the last things you hear sends chills down your spines.

"You two, on the clamps. I'll contact the TIE squadron and get them in the air just in case they get airborne."

You are all in the ship. It has been unlocked from the clamps (but the Stormtroopers are attempting to rectify that issue) and you have the HMRI in hand. There are several options for where your characters can be at this point:

The cockpit: Obviously, if you want to fly this bucket of bolts, at least one of you will need to pilot the thing.
Engineering: Installation of the HMRI, damage control, and dilithium crystal maintenance.
On the guns: Pew, pew! This will use a character's Gunnery skill.

Jumping into the pilot's seat, Pash is confronted by a heavily modified control center, but he quickly figures things out as he fires up the ship.

Oskara slides into the gunner's seat and finds the weapon pointed in the general direction of the Stormtrooper that has been yelling out commands.

Easily finding where the HMRI is to be installed, VEX sets about the task at hand.

The Krayt Fang starts to lift off just as a pair of Stormtroopers begin the process of restoring one of the clamps to the ship's landing gear. Pash can feel the pull of the partially closed clamp against the stick as he tries to get the ship in the air when suddenly a blast from the one of the customized YT-1300 cannon's rocks the ground underneath.

What's left of a Stormtrooper flies through the air, striking the pair attending to the clamp, knocking the whole contraption free in the process. Bucking violently upward, the ship breaks free and away from Mos Shuuta. Oskara's shot has not only obliterated a Stormtrooper, but has ultimately freed the ship.

Despite the rough take-off VEX installs the HMRI without a hitch, all it has to do now is finish its boot up sequence and the Krayt Fang will be ready for hyperspace!

Just when everything seems to be going exactly to plan, the short range sensors light up. Two TIE fighters are quickly closing in from behind.

Initiative from everyone, please! (Your choice of Cool or Vigilance). If you beat either of the TIE pilots' rolls you may take an action.

Pash has several piloting options available:
Gain the Advantage(Action): This will allow any fire coming from your ship to ignore any advatnage the chosen enemy ship may have previously had and to ignore any disadvatages your ship had for taking Evasive Maneuvers. It also increases the difficulty of that enemy's ship trying to Gain the Advantage on you.The difficulty is based on the speeds of the two ships. Since the TIEs are faster, this would be a Hard (3P) Piloting Check.
Evasive Maneuvers(Maneuver): This upgrades the difficulty (1P to 1R) of any attack made from, or against the ship.
Stay on Target)(Maneuver): This upgrades the attack rolls (1G to 1Y) of any attack made from, or against the ship.
(this is the Starter Set list, the list in the core game has many more options)

Oskara can continue to blast away (Gunnery)! She can also take an Aim maneuver, just as if firing a personal weapon to gain a Boost (1Blue) die. As difficulty of combat checks against vehicles is based on the both of the ships' size, all combat checks will start as Average (2P), but may be changed based on Actions/Maneuvers taken by the pilot.

Fun Fact: Ship based guns are 10x as powerful as personal weapons. So this ship's 6 rated gun does 60 damage to personel.

VEX can remain in engineering if he chooses to perform Damage Control as needed during combat Average (2P) Mechanics check to fix hull damage, or Easy (1P) to reduce System Strain, if the ship has been undamaged up to that point.

OR

VEX can make a run for the dorsal turret mounted weapon and fire away.

Of course you can take any other action that you may want as well if you so choose and we'll figure it out on the way. Assume you're all on comms during this encounter.

Undeterred by his wingman's demise the other TIE pilot slides his fighter to the left and waits for the targeting computer to acknowledge a lock on the Krayt Fang before calmly squeezing the trigger.
