Character Creation

Aug 2, 2021 9:26 pm
Hi Players,

Thanks for joining me on this journey to Xen'drik and the Thunder Sea.

We begin a journey into a world of swashbuckling adventure; a world of draconic prophecies; a land and sea of mystery and alien rituals; and an untamed continent and ocean wild.

Begin your journey by reading the introduction to Eberron: Rising from the Last War. The more that you ready from Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of this book, the more you will enjoy our campaign.

You can also read Exploring Eberron for additional context, and there are character options potentially available to you in that book that you can leverage, also.

One final place for some quick inspiration into the world of Eberron would be to listen to a series of short Youtube videos created by Jorphdan (the "ph" is silent), explaining some Eberron lore quickly and entertainingly.

CHARACTER OPTIONS:

Use this link to add your character sheet to my DNDBeyond campaign.

Character Level: You will all start at level 3 for this adventure. Multiclassing and feats are allowed for this game.
Attributes: Attributes will be handled with the standard 27-point buy system presented in Chapter 1 of the Player's Handbook.
Races: You can choose any races from the Player's Handbook, Eberron: Rising from the Last War, and Exploring Eberron. This includes the variant human as an option.
Classes: You can choose any class options from any official WOTC source (no UA). You may also choose class options available in Exploring Eberron, as well as the extra class features offered in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Backgrounds: You can use the backgrounds presented in any official WOTC source.

Instead of stressing about the personality traits presented in the background, focus on the mechanics of the background.

Now, under "Personality Traits", I want you to select two positive personality ideas that make up your character.
[ +- ] Some examples are...
Now, under "Flaws", I want you to select two negative aspects that relate to the two personality ideas that you chose for your character.
[ +- ] Some examples are...
As an example, if my cleric's "personality traits" are patience and optimism, then as "flaws" I could choose indecisiveness and naivety for him.

Once those traits are selected, I want you to write a "significant memory" (a paragraph-long moment in the character's life that stuck with the character and defined them in this way, leveraging the background chosen to help frame the paragraph). You can choose one paragraph to encapsulate all of his or her "personality traits" and "flaws", or you can provide a "significant memory" for each one individually.
[ +- ] Example 'Significant Memory'
For "Ideals" and "Bonds", select from the options given from your background, or use your own that fits narratively. Then create separate "significant memories" for each of those options.

Starting Equipment: You select your starting equipment based on your 1st level class. You also start with an additional 60 gold pieces, above your starting monies with your starting equipment.
You can swap out items from your selections there for their monetary value found in the Player's Handbook, and then purchase non-magical items available in the Player's Handbook.

You start with 2 potions of healing (2d4+2 hp) as magic items.

House Rules:
- Flexible Racial Attribute. When you select a race with attribute bonuses, you can apply one of your +1 bonuses to any attribute, rather than those described in your race. You cannot apply this bonus to an attribute that you are already boosting with another racial attribute.
- Burgeoning Heroes. Each character begins with 5 extra hit points.
- Devastating Critical Hits. On a critical hit, roll the appropriate damage dice once instead of twice. Damage is calculated as the maximum value of the dice, plus the rolled result, plus the modifiers to damage at the end.
- Sundered Shields. When a creature wearing a non-magical shield is hit by a melee weapon attack, they can choose to have their shield destroyed and take no damage from the attack. They must make this choice before damage dice are rolled.
- Variant Encumbrance. We will be utilizing the Variant Encumbrance rules presented in Chapter 7 of the Player's Handbook.
- Variant Inspiration. Here is how we will manage inspiration.

Personality: Persistent, honest
Flaw: Abrasive/rude. Merciless

Significat memory from the war
Sargent Keel was and had always been an asshole, to the shifters in particular. His silverflame pendant was a constant reminder that shifters were merely tolerated. Kevin was deep into a Warmachine, trying to get it going before the enemy overran them. But the damage was to severe. Desperately trying to make the impossible possible, he kept adding it - Until Srg. Keel pulled him out, the enemy had reached them, and Srg. Keel and Kevin fought side by side to get clear.
OOC:
Bonds: Someone saved my life on the battlefield. To this day, I will never leave a friend behind.
Significat memory from after the war
Kevin was part of a crew who ventured into the mournlands, trying to recover valuable salvage. Inside the mournlands he was faced with livingspells. Magic spells that had been warped by the mournland and somehow gain a life of their own. Spells without a caster, roaming the land. how do you deal with something like that?
OOC:
Flaws: The monstrous enemy we faced in battle still leaves me quivering with fear.

Alin is changeling, although that is generally no known. They make no bones about being a someone who will get things done for you with few questions and no evidence left behind (rogue soulknife). They also do not hide that they are an acolyte of The Six (but the fact that prayers to The Traveler are their main focus is not so obvious).
Not evil, but hard neutral. Loyal and unforgiving, they can be trusted by and be considered "lawful" to those they have made an an arrangement with… and unwavering in their revenge to those that break that trust.

"Law is a matter of perspective my friend, and the Galifar Code of Justice can go jump into The Black Pit. All that matters from where your sitting is what we have said between us today." - Alin of Mistmarsh (current, human persona)

Also, they do get seasick.

I am really liking the characters in the party so far.

Please create a shell of a character on Gamersplane (include the image for in-character posting), and also add your characters to the DNDBeyond campaign so that I can review some things and possibly add the inspiration tracker (I'm building a feat that all the characters in the party will have to track it).

Hi, all!
I've got two orphaned characters I'd like to re-game: either a Gnome evocation wizard or a human circle of the land druid. [The druid was going to be circle of spores but I use DNDBeyond on the free side ;)] I'll decide by tomorrow night but suggestions are welcomed.

I have been working on stats and will get them into dndbeyond. I haven’t used it yet really so give me a minute.

Additional insight into Alin.

"I must apologize Nob" Alin says to the goblin drinking across the table from them "but you will have to tell your boss that I cannot do the job. The pay he is offering is quite flattering, and more than enough normally. It’s just that revenge jobs leave a bad taste in my mouth." Alin takes a sip of wine as if to illustrate this point "You know I only take jobs that I think will tip the scales in a way others haven’t expected. Besides, revenge is a very personal thing, affecting only those directly involved, I suggest that your boss finds the Jorasco himself and puts a pin in him with his own hands." Alin lifts their cup to the goblin "Ghaal morguur! Enough seriousness. Let’s enjoy the rest of the evening, tell me what you have been up to as of late? How many children now?"

I actually should be able to share my content, and I have the circle of spores, so have at it!

I think I did the thing. I will review my printed character sheet tonight to make sure it came out as expected.
Aug 4, 2021 6:03 pm
I went into the character sheets of Eshu and Alin on DNDBeyond, and I added 60 GP to your character sheets, as well as 2 potions of healing.

As stated up above, once you choose your starting equipment according to your class and background, you can add 60 GP to your character sheet, and you can buy and sell at the PHB rates for all mundane equipment.
Aug 5, 2021 12:38 pm
I had added the gold and potions, I guess that didn't stick. I will have to make sure other changes were not lost.

Can I get an Everbright lantern? There is no cost in DnD Beyond.

Have updated my character description. Am I missing anything?

I have submittet 2 characters. One to gain acces to the easy dieroller and one just to have the avatar of Kevin when he is shifted

Hello everyone. Hero, thanks for inviting me to this game! And thanks for giving me a couple days to wrap up IRL stuff.

Maybe I'll just mention it now, I am going on family vacation next week from Monday -> Thursday but I should still be able to post from the road :)

The characters here look great so far! A bit of grey edge to them, which is a nice fit for Eberron.

I am going to be making Seraphina, a Human Arcane Trickster with the Sage background. Orphaned in the Last War at a young age (both parents fought for Breland), she hated her life in the Sharn orphanage she wound up in. But Sharn is an easy place to disappear in, especially with her burgeoning magical adept skills. She started working at the Sharn public library, developing her rogue skills retrieving overdue books (assisted by her familiar) and her magic skills by reading all the books in the magic section. Her mentor noticed how quickly she learned and how insatiable her appetite for knowledge was, and invited her to join a secret league of scholars known as the Unbroken Spine. The Unbroken Spine specializes in acquiring books of all kinds, especially lost or dangerous tomes. As an initiate (with the rank of Unbound) she must prove her worth by finding such a tome, and she figures this expedition to Xen'drik might provide just the opportunity.

Let's say that your Everbright lantern costs 10 gp. You can have that if you want.

Very cool!

Thieves cant is almost a first language for Alin. They certainly know the Sharn standard cant (but not anything Unbroken Spine specific) and some district specific lingo (Upper Menthis for the library?). We should be able to silently communicate with sign language as long as we can see each other.

Didn't quite finish, but here's what I got so far! Gonna head to bed and finish up the sheet tomorrow. Decided she's not an orphan, but her Dad died in the war and her mother raised her, albeit in poverty. She grew up among the stacks of the library, and the rest about the Unbroken Spine is unchanged.

Positive Personality Ideals: Independent, bright, relentlessly optimistic
Negative Personality Traits: Obsessed by mysteries, not much real-world experience, naive.

Thinking up his history and motivations is easier than finishing the character sheet. :|

Ghillie Dhu
https://i.imgur.com/tTxzPYF.png
Ghillie Dhu, the gardener for decades at Sharn's Morgrave University, was tasked by Larrian ir'Morgrave with setting up a 'poison garden' featuring intoxicating and poisonous plants. He did his job a bit too well when he successfully grew several Xen'drik specimens which previously hadn't been grown in Khorvaire.
[ +- ] Significant Memory
The University would need more security for its poison garden as well as more specimens, and Ghillie volunteered to go to Xen'drik to bring back even rarer and far deadlier samples. Cloaked in an armour of the plants (including some of his precious poisons), mushrooms, and the occasional little critter he now has the power to protect, a decidedly shaggier Ghillie looked forward to the adventure!

Personality Traits: Kindness, Tolerance
Flaws: Depressing, Morbid

Yeah, poor Eshu. I wonder what quirks Eshu developed as a result of that torturous poisoning!!!
Aug 8, 2021 5:09 pm
Re: personality... It's definitely an acceptance of mortality in a gallows humour sort of way mixed oddly with a joie de vivre, plus probably not being above using that poisoner's kit on a deserving soul.

Re: mechanics... The whole decay druid thing. :P Maybe poison resistance and Detect Poison? ;)

I believe Seraphina's character sheet is basically ready to go: https://ddb.ac/characters/55591800/zVp9Od

I decided to leave all but 10gp with her mother to cover her expenses during Seraphina's absence.

didn't see the 2d4 healing potions on dndbeyond but will add manually later

Great memory! Loved it! This game is going to go well!

Also, I liked what I could see of Seraphina, and I’m cool with mom taking the lion’s share of the gold. That should help her for some time.

Len, if you could add your character sheet to the campaign, I would appreciate it. The item is just called "Potion of Healing". Go ahead and add 2 to your inventory.

Sorry @HeroAmongMen, got some unpleasant news (Covid outbreak at my kid's school) and it derailed my character making (wife was distraught). All is well (son tested negative, huzzah!) and I'm catching up on character creation as we speak. Will have it submitted by the end of the day.

Currently working on a Dwarf Ancestral Guardian Barbarian of House Kundarak (noble background) of the Mror Holds interested in exploring Xen'drik. A younger dwarf of a wealthy and powerful house that is looking to make his way in the world on his own. He has the blessings of her ancestors, who guide him.

Character so far on DnD Beyond.
Dec 1, 2021 4:35 pm
Sweet idea! I know that people give the dwarves of Eberron flack, but I LOVE the Mror Holds lore. I created a fun one-shot for my regular group based on a group of dwarves from the various clans searching the 13th hold.

I'm excited to see your character in action.

Len

Dec 1, 2021 7:24 pm
Yeah I know what you mean! I love the Dwarven fixation with stories. I'd like to craft stories about each item, and the character's focus will be on doing deeds that become legends.

I decided to switch to Clan Droranath, which is all about strength, confidence, and embracing the wild. As such, I've switch his background to "Uthgardt Tribe Member" although I'll flavour it as Clan Droranath member. Same focus on finding his own way because he is a younger son of a house and there's not much room for a sapling to grow if it is surrounded by tall trees.

Here's a bit about the Clan from Exploring Eberron:

Hi all. I’m joining the game, and I’d like to know what the party needs composition wise. Another front line warrior? A wizard? A healer? I have several character ideas, and want to play something that benefits the group as well as fun for me. So what should I play?
Jan 31, 2022 9:46 pm
Welcome, @JoshuaMabry!

Our current party composition consists of:
- Ghillie Dhu, our Human Circle of Spores Druid
- Kevin, our Shifter Battle Smith Artificer
- Alin, our Changeling Soulknife Rogue
- Gunnar, our Dwarf Path of the Ancestral Guardians Barbarian

Based on our pretty balanced party, I think you could fit into any place you wish, mechanics-wise.
