Chronicles of the Gatekeeper

It is a dangerous time for those strong in the Force. The Jedi Knights are no more, and the evil Galactic Empire seeks to scour their memory from the galaxy. Without the Jedi Order, those attuned to the Force often wander adrift, vulnerable to the agents of the Empire and the lure of the dark side.

Yet, the teachings of the Jedi live on, scattered across the stars. One such repository of wisdom is the holocron of the Jedi Knight Suljo Warde. This record, and its gatekeeper, await discovery by the Force users destined to exhume Warde’s legacy....

OOC:

Camera pans down to show a G9 Rigger cruising through space. Inside the vessel the crew huddles around a Jedi Holocron that struggles to open.

Abruptly, the holocron hums and rises a few centimeters into the air as it separates along previously invisible gaps and realigns itself into a diamond shape. A blue, holographic image appears of a youthful, darkhaired human man in the robes of a Jedi.
The hologram nods to you and smiles slightly but sincerely. "Greetings. students. I am Suljo Warde—well, his memory, at least. I am the gatekeeper of this holocron. which Suljo Warde created to store his knowledge of the Force and the ways of the Jedi."

Greetings, Master Warde. Kennoe says as he watches the holocron. Standing there with the others Kennoe finds himself full of curiosity and awe.

Tomian was barely breathing as he watched the strange device raise into the air and realign itself. His eyes widened as the figure of the robed Jedi emerged and introduced himself to the group.

The slender young man wore a robe as well, though, his was colored dark blue and showed signs of hard wear from months spent running and hiding from imperial bounty hunters. His knees trembled with the excitement of the moment and his eye remained glued on the hologram.

"Amazing," he whispered.

Zaoanlu watches from the back over the others heads. And breathes a sigh of relief at seeing Master Warde. He senses the slight easing of tension in the room as the holocron comes fully into focus before them.

Ayy stands in silence, her lekku twitching slightly as the holocron reveals its secret. She gives Kennoe a quizzical look as he greets Master Warde.

"It's just a recording, surely it can't respond." she says, not entirely sure she believes her own statement.

Wearing a black leather greatcoat over grubby clothing, Larh is focused on the holocron as much as everyone else is. In spite of Ayy's comment, the middle-aged Devaronian also respectfully greets the holgraphic image of the Jedi, "Greetings, Master Warde." There is a different sort of tension that fills his stance after the holocron comes to life before their eyes, his gaze shifting to take in his fellow students for a moment.

"I don't know about being amazing but I can respond. I am a gatekeeper. A gatekeeper is a Force- imprinted artificial sentience that inhabits a holocron and allows its users to access the information it contains. Like most gatekeepers. I am based on the personality and memories of the Jedi who created me. Think of me as an echo of him—Suljo Warde"

Kodaj stood among the others, a hooded shrug shading her face and sheathing her folded arms in unmarked black. Her expression remained reserved, until the Gatekeeper responded in real time to the comments made. Her eyes widened slightly in surprise, and she glanced aside to check the expressions of the others present. Her gaze snagged on Devaronian in particular, and she lingered there to assess the tension in him before returning her focus to the holocron.

"Is this a living Jedi, this Sulju Warde?" she asked, uncertain how the technology worked, or how old it might be.

"It seems...unlikely that he is still alive, given...," Larh's voice trails off here, and he shakes his head somewhat. Upon hearing AAyy's question for the artificially-intelligent hologram before them, the Devaronian's attention sharpens, focusing again on the image of Master Warde, waiting to hear his answer for her.

The flickering holographic image nods knowingly. "Suljo Warde was known formally accomplishments and feats, both before and during the Clone Wars. I only have knowledge of his whereabouts up to my creation. During my creation he was working on the refinement of the ability to predict the future. Although many Jedi are capable of foreseeing future events. Warde's ability was different. Rather than focusing on visions of events yet to come. Warde perceived the future decisions. actions, and intentions of other sentients. Not only could Warde see beyond lies and deceptions, he could predict another's decisions long before that person even contemplated the matter.
The secrets of this technique, as well as the most sensitive knowledge Warde possessed, are not contained in this holocron. but in a set of three kyber crystals he created alongside it in order to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. This holocron is the only means by which to read those crystals.
Suljo Warde completed the construction of this holocron while on the planet Arbooine. He entrusted one of the crystals to a young Force-sensitive Mirialan named Gel Marcolf. He saw great potential in Marcolf. whom he hoped would become his Padawan. Warde kept the other crystals with him. and where they are now. I can not say. If you hope to learn the technique behind his predictive abilities and unlock the full potential of this holocron. you must travel to Arbooine and retrace Master Warde’s steps."

But I, at least, am still struggling with less sophisticated force interactions. You seem to suggest that the Holocron may be able to assist our development and understanding of abilities that were used more commonly among the Jedi. Is that so?"

Listening carefully to what the projection from the holocron has to say, Larh inclines his head a little. "I perosonally never showed much talent for foresight of that sort, but surely one among us can learn it. And no doubt it would be useful to our efforts overall," he remarks to no one in particular after hearing about Master Warde's research.

Zaoanlu nods his head as he listens to the holographic image, and to the questions of the group. He does not have any known skill in predicting future events that he is aware of, but one never knows, do they?

"Yes," she agreed. "Any cache of knowledge from the Jedi is precious now, with all that has been lost. It is worth tracking down the other pieces of the holocron even if we intended nothing more than to safeguard the knowledge. Though I would be eager to learn the techniques described, myself, I will not deny it."

She looked to the Wookiee, eyes narrowing curiously at his addition to the conversation. The content of his speech was lost on her, and she glanced around to the others to see if anyone else seemed to understand him.

Out of curiosity, is Zaoanlu wearing a translator or are we just hand-waving and saying the rest of the crew understands the wookiee language?

"I've been able to practice what little seems to have come naturally but I've had no way to properly study or had any guidance."

She glances at the holocron.

"Maybe that's about the change..."

My house rule for knowing languages is make a Core Worlds or Outer Rim check to determine if you know the language. I believe Kashyyk is in the Outer Rim. Since Wookiees seem to be fairly prevalent I’d say 2 difficulty Outer Rim check. Success means you can understand it Truimph means you can hold a conversation in it.

"Oh boy," begins Larh, glancing around at the other again before going on with a slight frown on his face, "The Empire is what became of the Republic after the Clone Wars ended. Chancellor Palpatine became the Emperor, claimed that the Jedi attempted a coup. The Jedi were mostly killed, the order scattered if not entirely destroyed. That is the short version, at least." The Devaronian lets out a heavy sigh once finishes that explanation for the projection. Turning to his fellow students, he then says, "Mostly, I'm good with machines and computers. Have an affinity for them through the Force. I...didn't get to learn much more than that before the Empire rose."

"Since I was a child I've been able to sense living beings that are close by. I had just assumed everyone could, and it wasn't until my parents told me that I should tell no one of my abilities that I realized something was... different about me."

I've been able to Enhance my natural physical abilities as well as move in ways most people cant. I never really considered myself special and thought everybody could as well.

Tomian listened to Zaoanlu politely, even though he couldn't understand what was being said. His expression was one of confusion that melted away with obvious relief when the Jedi Master offered his translation. The young man was clearly relieved. The game of charades that they had been playing to communicate with their Wookie companion was time-consuming and seldom ended with a satisfying result.

"Sometimes when I want something badly enough, the Force guides me to whatever it is I seek. I have also been able to heal minor wounds and alter the terrain around me, occasionally, but I can't say for sure exactly how I've managed it," he said apologetically.

That the holocron could translate for the Wookiee was a relief. Kodaj nodded, and then listened while the others spoke of their proficiencies.

"I too can sometimes sense the living things around me," she said, with a nod towards the Twi'lek. "And on occasion, I have been able to influence the thoughts of others. It sounds like we are all only beginning to understand our connections to the Force. This holocron will be an invaluable resource for us. And I, for one, am very interested in going to Arbooine to find its missing pieces. "

In general, not necessarily, but if you don't have points in the skill, then in this case yes.

In general, you take green dice equal to the highest of your skill or your characteristic. Then upgrade a number of those green dice to yellow equal to the lower of the skill or characteristic.

You can make a Knowledge (Outer Rim) Check 2 Difficulty [To recall from memory] or a Computers 1 Difficulty [To search the Holonet] to see what you know or can find. Both skills are tied to Intellect. To plot a course there make a 1 Difficulty Astrogation check.

"Well, I do know of it, but have never been there. I believe Lahr has done some research as well."

Ayy will take a few moments to relay to the others what she knows before glancing towards the ship’s console.

"I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t be on our way, however my skills as a pilot are more useful once we’ve arrived at a destination. I fear plotting courses to those destinations is not my strong point."

"Well," Tomian says. "It looks like our first hurdle to overcome is finding an Astrogator. Perhaps we should make some discreet inquiries at the nearest spaceport? Maybe we can find someone sympathetic to our cause."

Tomian is clearly uncomfortable with what he is suggesting, but he manages to keep his voice steady.

"I realize that there is a great deal of risk associated with that course of action," he adds. "If anyone has a better idea, please speak up. I am happy to consider other options."

I...think I can manage it. I'm no astro droid, but I can probably work the nav computer well enough to get us there, Larh offers regarding plotting the course to Arbooine, I wouldn't want to try plotting a course through a nebula or dense star cluster, but Arbooine seems to be reachable through major routes. The Devaronian then looks around at the others to see if they are agreeable, or would rather hit up a starport first.

Larh has nothing in Astrogation, but he does have a 4 Intellect

"I am in agreement with Larh," Kodaj says, gesturing to the Devaronian. "There is much risk associated with soliciting help, and I think between the lot of us, we should be able to figure it out."

It's an easy check. Larh with his four INT should be able to do it, no sweat. Kodaj will assist him as copilot for an additional boost die, with Alastor's permission.

Tomian exhaled softly when Kodaj spoke out in favor of Larh's suggestion. He was inclined to trust Larh's instinct over the dangerous gambit that he had suggested; however, he knew absolutely nothing about astrogation or piloting and was ill-equipped to gauge the associated risk.

"If the two of you believe that you are up to the task, that is enough for me. I am sorry that I am unable to help. I dreamed of traveling the stars someday as a child, but I never really believed that I would. Of course, even had I foreseen the events that led me here I don't know of anyone who might have taught me such skills."

Agreed, let us plot a course to our destination. Those that can plot the course..can do so. Those of us without the knowledge can assist in other areas. Kennoe says as the group finalized their plans.

As you break through Arbooine’s atmosphere, a dense, impenetrable canopy of green spreads out before you, broken here and there by mountains and massive lakes. The gatekeeper provides you with coordinates for the town of Quolas, but when you arrive, the thick foliage prevents you from visually confirming the settlement’s exact location, let alone landing there. Finally, you spot a clearing along the bank of a river, several kilometers from where you believe the town to be.

"Well done," Kodaj says to Larh, a hand touching his shoulder as she moves to leave the copilot seat. They'd made good time, and her estimation of the Devaronian's piloting skills increased as a result. She checked the readings of the world outside, looking for an indication that the climate was such that would require special equipment.

"It looks like we'll have a bit of a hike before us before we reach our destination," she pointed out. "We should plan accordingly."

Larh inclines his head to Kodaj. "Thank you. I guess when we have downtime, I'll have to spend some of it studying star charts. At least until we can maybe get our hands on an astromech droid," he responds as he steps out of the cockpit to go and gather up his gear. There isn't much of it, but he's not about to wander around a strange planet without a way to defend himself.

Tomian, with his backpack slung over one shoulder, joins the others as they prepare to disembark.

"Our confidence was well placed in the two of you. Well done," he says to Larh and Kodaj before addressing the group as a whole.

"I've brought a couple of stimpacks and a fusion lantern in case we don't make it back before night falls. As dense as the forest is, it is hard to guess how long it will take to reach the city. Are we ready to depart?", he asks.

Before you looms an elrit tree of truly gargantuan proportions, dwarfing those around it. Easily three hundred meters across at its base, the trunk rises high into the forest canopy, almost disappearing from sight. This is no mere tree, however, as evident from the many suspended, woven orbs, carved structures, and the bridges connecting it to surrounding trees. This is your destination—the city of Quolas.

"I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with the natives here," Kodaj admitted, looking to Ayy. "I cannot say how welcoming they may or may not be. Perhaps we should see how we are received before deciding on our strategy for locating Gel. Come. Let us see if we can find some citizens."

Kodaj turned her attention towards the city, and if no one offered an objection, she'd start that way with a wary eye, watching for any indication of life.

Larh considers the situation for a moment before suggesting, keeping his voice low as he speaks, "Considering who we are, and why we are looking for Gel, we probably want to be surreptitious in asking about him. We don't want to draw Imperial attention, after all." With this, he turns to the holographic image of Suljo Warde. "Master Warde, do you know anything about Gel's other interests? The line of work he was in? Hobbies he might have had? he asks.

Tomian looked up at the huge tree. The expression on his face was stern and focused. He almost appeared as if he were sizing up an opponent before a fight. Ayy's question drew his attention back to the group.

"I agree with Larh," he replied. "I'm surprised that we have been able to get this close without being stopped. I can't decide if that is a good sign or a bad one," he added as he followed behind Kodaj.

Im not sure you want to be talking to or asking a holocron questions out in public.

. As you enter the city a family of birdlike Sathari (native of Arbooine) with loaded wagons is departing. Kirril Jiarlo the family's elder comes to greet you and offers to sell you their goods. Their inventory seems to be common equipment and goods with one exception, bearsloth antivenom.

Tomian listens politely to the Jiarlo family elder describe the goods that he had to offer and one item, in particular, grabbed his attention. With his curiosity piqued as it was, he couldn't help but ask, "Bearsloth Antivenom? Do these creatures pose a threat to travelers in and around the city, or do they tend to keep to more remote locales?"

Kennoe steps up and looks over the items. Sadly, with no credits to his name, that's all Kennoe could do. Smiling as he hears Kodaj's remark, Kennoe offers one of his own. One would think that's the truth, yet until we encounter one...we'll never know.

"Anything combined with a bear sounds like it could be quite a threat, though," Larh remarks to Kodaj as he, too, looks over the items for sale. The antivenom does get a closer look, but he, too, is creditless, and so he moves on fairly quickly.

Yeah, I misunderstood, didn't think we were quite in the city yet. If there were people other than the crew around, he would definitely not be trying to talk to the holocron.

"Bearsloths are all over and I am surprised you haven't come across one already, if you don't have any antivenom and plan to be in the area I would strongly suggest purchasing some." Kirril leans in and speaks in to whisper, "You seem new to the area so I will share some information: beware attracting too much attention to yourselves, Quolas is led by a cruel reeve prone to make examples of those who cross him and if you need a place to stay Jyl Korlis is a farmer who rents out some space in the city"

Kodaj narrowed her eyes thoughtfully at the price for the serum, and then tilted her head slightly to one side. She studied the vendor while he gave his advice, and tried to get a read on his authentic disposition.
