On Stranger Tides

You all wake up to the splashing of the ocean waves against Shargon's Lover, the galleon that you hopped on about three weeks ago. The steady rocking of the boat may have soothed some of you during your sleep, as the gentle sway is reminiscent of a cradle's rock.

The sting of the ocean air strikes your noses, and the sea air is ripe around you. You have been on this journey to Stormreach for about three weeks, and you should be close by now to the city.

The four of you share a closed-off set of bunks, with two cots hanging off the wall, one over another, on the port and starboard ends of the room. It is pretty cramped in the room, but sleeping isn't so bad, just when you all try to get up and get your gear for the day.

The sound of the crew up on the deck can be heard by all of you, though it is muffled.
OOC:
What're you all doing on this typical sea-faring morning?

Kevin have been studing the maps as much as he was allowed. But that would only pass some of the time, as not all are keen to share their maps.
This morning Kevin and a crewman are having some fun. Just a friendly brawl among men who like to spare with each other.

After three weeks, Alin has learned how to deal with seasickness, but just. They tend to stay close to the rails with a large mug of water infused with herbs recommended by the ships surgeon. Many sleepless nights were spent above deck attempting to hide this malady from the others, but eventually Alin gave that up as there was no way to keep such a secret. In truth, it must have been obvious to everyone on the ship in the first day or two.

During the trip, Alin spent time with each party member making them comfortable with the establishment of a mental connection, so that they could communicate with Alin when separated, or privately when together and dealing with others not in the the group.

Alin also spent time with Seraphina, brushing up on her particular "dialect" of thieves’ cant. After three weeks, the two often would converse at the dinner table privately via small hand gestures and peculiar phasing in seemingly normal conversation. Seraphina became quite good at trying to make Alin laugh out loud randomly in the middle of conversations. Alin considers the two to be friends by now and makes no effort to hide that they are jealous of her ability to cast mage hand and prestidigitation.

This fine morning, Alin leans on the forecastle stairs (still noticeably close to the port rail) and just laughs at Kevin getting smacked in the face. Maybe we should take old Jolly on our excursion instead of you Kevin, he’s twice your age and can still get one in on you!

This time at sea has been AMAZING, Mama! The people I've met and the stories they've told me! And the night sky! In Sharn, I've never seen the stars or breathed the fresh sea air. And as grateful as I am for these adventures, it also reminds me of how much I MISS home. How dearly I love my library, and how much I miss our cozy home. I am both thrilled and counting down the days until I return.

Seraphina is about to sign her letter when a sailor bumps into her. Oh gosh, is that Kevin rough housing with the crew again?

She cracks her knuckles and rolls up her sleeves, diving into the fray, quoting her best pirate accents in a comically deep voice!

"Avast ye sea dogs! And who will challenge me? The Scourge of the Thunder Sea!"

She's laughing a hooting all the way! But she doesn't go easy on the boys by a long shot.

Ghillie Dhu mostly ignored the scrapping behind him as he stood at the bow and looked ahead to where Xen'drik lay just over the horizon. Was that Seraphina getting in on the roughhousing? It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye but there's no healer nearby. He'd wait until someone begged him to mend a broken arm or bitten off ear.

As was his custom, the druid wore his forest camouflage over leather armour studded with bits of bone and stone.

"One never knows when pirates will show," he'd explained a few times at the beginning of their voyage regarding his armour but he also felt more comfortable cloaked in leaf and leather.

Perhaps he would shed everything and sun himself on the deck again later. The crew seemed either fascinated or repulsed, and both reactions made him chuckle as he soaked up the increasing warmth as the ship moved further south. For now, he watched the waves and wondered what awaited them in the peninsula of Skyfall.

After a few punches back and forth, the sailor goes down with a punch in the face delivered by Kevin. There is an equal amount of cheers and boos from the crowd as coins and various other things change hands in response to the result of the fight.

The burst of a loud, yet soothing voice carries over, challenging the crowd to a match, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a halfling sneaks in between Kevin and his recent victim and says in a high-pitched, but piercingly clear voice: "GET BACK TA WORK, YA SEA BITCHES! "Whoops.."

The Scourge of the Thunder Sea quickly tries to make herself scarce, lest she face the wrath of the Halfling taskmaster. She's half convinced the rumours of her having a clawfoot below decks that she feed a steady diet disobedient sailors.

She tries to catch Alin's eye, and signals to him in thrives cant: "TROUBLE?" It's what she signed to him when she wanted to practice her skills. Maybe they could sneak a couple of potatoes out of the galley, or race up the riggings to the crow's nest? Alin was so fun to hang out with, and she had learned a lot from him. She had never met someone so swift!
Aug 26, 2021 11:09 am
With a practiced flick of thumb to middle finger, Alin responds "No danger but alert" in cant.

As the sailors scramble back to their posts, Alin strides from the forecastle to their companions. "I think the captain is ready to be rid of us, she doesn’t appreciate a little distraction from routine like some of us do. Efficient I suppose, but as boring as Aureon as they say."

With an amused smile on his face, Ghillie joined the others.

"At least nothing was broken or bitten off this time," he said, adding more quietly, "but I've noticed that the ship is ever so slightly off course. No more than five degrees but that's huge when you're sailing a long way."

Most of the stories about the Thunder Sea that Seraphina had read were about romantic pirates evading brutal Sahuagin marauders. But she didn't really think they were true ... right? Nonetheless, she decided to follow Kevin's lead and suit up for trouble.

With the fun being clamped down on, she decides to get ahead of boredom and find something useful to learn.

"Ghillie, how are you calculating the ship's course? Do you have navigator's instruments hidden on your person or something? Or is this some magic talent you know?"

As you all regroup, the true captain of the ship comes over, Viktor Solokova, a half-elf swashbuckler type. He is a handsome, strapping man in his mid-20s, and he has a look of vision and purpose, and the same air about him as you interacted with him in times past.

"Don't mind my first mate. She can be a bitch sometimes. Here, come away from the edges of the ship, and [BLeueowow] get something to eat down below deck. Y'all don't need to work on this particular vessel."
OOC:
That seemed like he threw up a little in his mouth, but he didn't skip a beat. In fact, you see a little dribble of vomit on his bottom lip, but he doesn't even acknowledge it there.
Aug 31, 2021 6:08 pm
I feel better already. But yes, a bit to eat would be a good idear. But perhaps not what you had. It doesn't seem to agree with you

Aug 31, 2021 8:10 pm
"What? Oh," he wipes his chin and mouth with a handkerchief and says, "Oh, I’m fine. Thank you.

"Now head down to chow."

Just as you are about to head below deck, the sailor in the crow’s nest yells, "LAND, HO!" She points forward towards a medium-sized island with some strange cliffs in the distance (based on tour current heading, it seems that you would crash into the cliffs if you stayed on this course for another 5 minutes at this speed).

Captain Viktor walks to the edge of the ship, looks through his spy glass, and says, "STAY THE COURSE!"

He taps the side of the ship using his ring in a rhythmical way, and a symbol starts to glow blue on his bicep, under his light white shirt, and the hull of the ship starts to open up, and unfold outward. Inside these strange flaps that are shifting out of the ship, several sahuagin and hooked onto the wood, and manage to maneuver and flip onto the top part of these strange flaps and start to make their way to the deck.
OOC:

No one knew he had a dragonmark, nor did you know about the elemental drives on this ship (an elemental galleon takes a fraction of the time you have already been on the ship).

Seraphina, in a show of swiftness, slips right behind Kevin's steel defender and, in equal impressiveness, slips her rapier through the heart of the sahuagin, who falls to the floor and off of the flap of the ship, into the sea.

Meanwhile, group C of sahuagin assault those engaged with them, while those trapped in the entangled vines still cannot wrestle free of their "unnatural" natural bonds.
OOC:
Since the steel defender doesn't have blood, I am going to say that the sahuagin's blood frenzy does not count against the steel defender.

Though Alin enjoys chaos and uncertainty, they also enjoy living, and not knowing what in the Six is going on here seems to reduce the chance of living significantly.
Alin crouches and slinks up further to the fray, attempting to hide near the hatch along the starboard railing. To those looking, that seems all that Alin accomplishes.
In their head, Alin focuses on the captain and the larger of the sahugin next to the captain and says to them both, "Why is this happening? Too many are being sent to meet the Keeper today!"

Ghillie looks and punches one of the sahuagin, which gets punched and falls into the water.

One of the sahuagin in front of Kevin goes to attack him, biting and slashing its claws against the battle smith, but the battle smith's armor seems to hold against the natural weapons of the sahuagin raider assaulting him.

The coral crusher dealing with the captain grunts in frustration as another of its allies falls, and it grips tightly the arm of the captain and keeps dragging him towards the front of the ship.

Another sahuagin grapples and attempts to pull another one of the crewmen, but Erica Belisle, the wicked halfling first mate, runs, slides between the legs of the sahuagin and aims her shortsword upward, slicing between the sahuagin's legs and killing it.

One of the coral crushers says, "I'll get the half-sized sea witch!", and he is able to get free of the vines entangling him and snatch her and drag her back.

Alin stares at the Capitan, "You must get us to our destination and away from your foolishness, now."
Nov 13, 2021 7:50 am
Lets just get on with it without provoking more attacks from the original owners. Kevin is forming his own conclutions that this ship techology have been stolen from the sahuagin and it have pissed them off.

XOSkel10 says:
OOC:
Apparently the crewman are not panicked by being underwater?
Alin looks nervously at the bubble keeping the ship safe under the ocean and walks up to the captain. Alin says aloud

"I am certain that they will return, Capitan. One of the those trying to take you told me that you had stolen their technology, and frankly I believed what was said. How you deal with these people of the sea is none of my business, until it gets me or one of my friends killed, then it becomes very personal. Our agreement with you did not involve such secrets and dangers, and under other circumstances, what I feel you have done to us would swiftly earn you a visit to the Keeper."
"I am sorry that you had to deal with that...unpleasantness. Since you have shared your aid to me and my people, I must share some details honestly with you all.

"I will call for you all later to share my secrets with you."

annex says:
"Swimming without getting wet," Ghillie Dhu said as he became a dry submariner. He made his way to the captain, and offered to look at his injured arm before healing him.
OOC:
Rolling Medicine to inspect the captain's oozing arm.

runekyndig says:
Kevin is himself badly hurt but takes a seat next to his iron defender. From his seat next, he studies the new wall that keeps the water away.
This is a design I have never seen before in the 5 nations. It's not of the great houses is it? No, none of the houses does underwater travel. Where did it come from?

From them?
He points to one of the sahuagin bodies.

After some time and cleanup, the crew calms down, letting the engine take them closer to their destination.

Later, Captain calls for you all, and leads you down to his cabin, and he shuts the door. He then says, "Thank you, again, for your aid up there. I have not been honest with you all."

He takes off his shirt, and you see gills along his chest.

He says, "I am malenti, though shortly after my metamorphosis, I felt...emotion...for the life I consumed. I left the designs of my masters of the sahuagin, and took on the fellow's ship. I made these adjustments myself, do you like? Perhaps the engineer would like a closer look at my design."
Nov 18, 2021 2:35 am
Dhu nodded at the man's words while inspecting the odd physiology closer.

"I suspected some kind of hybridization after examining your arm. Your body is impressive, as is your diving ship. Also impressive is kidnapping us and assuming we won't finish the job your pure strain cousins started. Return us immediately to the surface and take us directly to Stormreach."

Alin listens intently, their fingers moving as if grasping and releasing an invisible dagger. "We were mind connected briefly Viktor, or whatever you name is, there is no use in trying to lie to us…. Actually, regardless of your story or your crimes, we insist you deliver us to our destination as we have obligations to meet"

I do have some thoughts about your design. Specially on the transition from above to below the surface. Some I would share were we not your prisoners.
Your history with these sahuagin is none of my business. More importantly, you transporting us to our destination, in the agreed fashion, IS our business.
Nov 18, 2021 8:39 am
"Yes, of course, you are all correct. We are headed to Stormreach still. You are no prisoners of mine; I fully intend on delivering you as agreed upon. It is safest for us in Shargon’s Teeth to remain below surface, as they will not be expecting it of a ship as large as ours.

"In truth, I saw the signs that sahuagin were following our ship, and I panicked, and decided that they wouldn’t be ready for underwater escapades with such a large ship. I apologize for startling you."

Glad to hear it.
From the gigantic warforged we know that movement .... tech speak ... Using a similar design, you could optimize the transformation.
I am curious one how you navigate underwater. By sight or by ekko location?

Kevin goes back out to see if any of his ideals could accally be implemented. Besides he has to tend to his iron defender, it took some hits in the fight.

While the others talked, Ghillie Dhu watched the undersea world.

"Pity there are no known poisonous seaweeds or I'd harvest some while I'm down here."

Though still mesmerized, the druid asked, "How long before Shargon’s Teeth reaches Stormreach?"

"It’ll take us another day of underwater travel to get to Stormreach.

"I anticipate a calm journey here on out."
Nov 26, 2021 10:56 pm
"I'd hope so. Any other surprises we can look forward to with you and this ship when we dock?"
Nov 29, 2021 4:47 pm
After a couple of hours undersea, the ships takes a turn around a large island, surfaces, and the magical-mechanical wing things tuck under the sides of the ship, and it seems like a normal sailing vessel again.

The captain has the remaining crew scrub and swab the deck, making it look normal. Then the captain says, "If you give these vouchers to the Sigmund Bauerson in the Wavecrest Tavern, you will be offered free room and board for a week.

"The tavern doesn't normally have tenants, but he's a friend, and he will honor these. I am so sorry for any grievances I may have caused you."

After another two hours of sailing almost completely west, you start to distinguish floating towers, with cables and ropes and ladders and bridges connecting them to each other. The sheer size of some of the structures leaves you in awe, and you realize that this was not built by humans or the other humanoid races, but by giants of a by-gone era.

The ship moves gently towards the dock, and the crewmen yell back and forth as they coordinate the movement of the ship in the appropriate position, and secure it to the dock.

You are all at the docks in Stormreach. The Wavecrest Tavern is located in this region, the captain has described where the tavern is, and you feel confident you could arrive there without issue.
OOC:
What do you do?

By the way, you are all at 4th level now. Go ahead and level your characters up.

Seraphina receives an urgent summons from her order as she arrives on shore.

"It seems like there has been a change of plans, my friends! It was really nice to meet you all. I hope we meet again sometime!"
OOC:
Thanks Hero, I'll submit a new character today!
Nov 29, 2021 6:33 pm
We better take the rooms at the Wavecrest Tavern, and then figure out a way to track this Raelyn character. He should have made some friends, that might be able to tell us something of his later days.
We also have to figure out if the artifact was delivered.
Any suggestion on how to go about this?
Nov 30, 2021 2:57 am
"Well, we are not to make it known who we work for, but that doesn’t mean we have to be in hiding. Let’s find out if the Storm Lord who was to get the artifact is having a party anytime soon, perhaps we can get ourselves invited if we make ourselves out to be interesting explorers or academics or the like. I quite fancy some extravagant food and drink after all that time at sea."
Dec 1, 2021 1:19 am
"One step at a time, Alin. First food, then questions and hopefully answers, then sleep. Wavecrest provides all. Once we get the lay of this city and its people at the Tavern, we can go fully exploring tomorrow."

Ghillie Dhu didn't mean to sound crotchety but the tension of the last few days had gotten to him. The longer he was on this new continent smelling exotic pollen and spore, the happier he would become.
Dec 4, 2021 8:35 pm
"Have you been to the Wavecrest then? Will the wine be as good as that at a Stormlord’s party?" Alin winks at Ghillie Dhu "But you are quite right of course, no need to jump to right now. I must regain my land legs and my ability to keep food down, a night in a steady bed will do us all some good I would assume?"
Dec 4, 2021 10:32 pm
"This is my first time on the continent. I doubt there will be any extravagance at Wavecrest but I do know how a good night's sleep can work wonders for the body's rhythms."
Dec 5, 2021 9:10 am
It's also my first time here. Lets get a room, food, and learn the local ways before we start kicking beehives. Kevin is a brute, but he is not stupid.
Dec 9, 2021 10:03 am
Kevin goes to the Wavecrest and secure himself a room.
