"Hope is the formaldehyde of life." --- A Sin-Eater proverb

Time: 9:15 pm CDT
Location: Carrollton, New Orleans

Situated on Saint Charles Avenue in the historic Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans, the Guillory House is a beautiful home by most accounts. Architecturally, it’s a center hall cottage – a style of building that appeared in the city during the early 1800s and was popularized by the upper middle class. The house’s basic layout is rectangular and raised about five feet off of the ground, which puts the entire structure at two and a half stories high. It sports a gabled roof, white weatherboard walls, and is enclosed by a wrought-iron fence. The windows are evenly spaced – with two on either side of the front door - and curtained with white lace. A wide-sitting roofed porch with Italianate columns makes up the façade of the building, accessed by a central stair and surrounded by immaculate landscaping. At first glance, the building strikes you as old.

Inside, the home is equally as attractive. Hardwood floors, brass ensconces, and walls of white plaster decorated with family portraiture and Impressionist paintings. The furnishings seem as old as the house itself: ornate 19th century end tables, armoires, bookcases, and salon chairs that lend an air of "southern gothic-ness" to the place. In general, the rooms of the home are symmetrically laid out and accessible by a central hallway. A small glass chandelier in each of the rooms provides soft light. Only the occasional modern contrivance, such a flat screen television or laptop, breaks from the home’s antiquated colonial décor.

Under the guise of paranormal investigators, your krewe was invited to the home of the Guillory family. For almost a year now, the Guillories have been terrorized by events that they claim are supernatural in nature. It began when the family moved in a year ago and got portions of the house remodeled. Individual family members reported strange noises, footsteps coming from empty rooms, and cold spots in which the air temperature was 10 degrees colder than the surroundings. This proceeded into appliances turning on and off seemingly on their own, objects being relocated, and hand prints on the bathroom mirror after a steamy shower. The family initially assumed that these occurrences were simply the sounds of an old house settling, or that there were problems with the house’s wiring.

However, things have ramped up in the past few months. The family has reported briefly seeing shadow people, catching movement from the corner of their eyes, and the constant feeling of being watched. Strange smells, whispers, and mysterious laughter have been growing in frequency, and the walls have occasionally leaked an odorous, opaque gel-like substance that no one appears able to identify. Still, the family had remained mostly in a state or denial or grudging tolerance until the Guillory’s fourteen year old daughter, Samantha, started waking up with inexplicable scratches and bite marks. She will no longer sleep alone in her bedroom.

Currently, you are all meeting with the Guillory family in the parlor of their home. The room is decorated with several plush chairs and love seats, as well as bookcases, rugs, and a mahogany work desk that makes it hard to tell if this is supposed to be a living room, office, or study. Your krewe was referred to the family by one of your contacts in the voodouisant community of New Orleans. From what your contact has explained to you, the family is desperate and needs help. And best of all, they are in a position to offer payment, which isn’t always the case with many of the people helped by your krewe. It’s clear, just from the house alone, that this family has money.

Claudine Guillory and her daughter sit on one of the small couches. Mother and daughter look very much alike: soft features, light auburn hair, and willowy frames. Both are sitting quietly, and Claudine is drinking what appears to be tea. They are dressed in brand name upscale summer dresses. Based on their body language, Claudine and Samantha Guillory seem scared but hopeful, especially Claudine. It’s something that your krewe has seen many times before with victims of hauntings; a fatigued vigilance that develops from frequently living in fear. From the way that Claudine is stroking her daughter’s back, you can tell that she’s more afraid for her daughter than herself.

A stern-looking middle-aged man sits by himself in a nearby armchair. Jérôme Guillory appears as though he just arrived from work. He’s clad in a charcoal gray business suit that indicates some kind of white collar profession. Given the oppressive heat and humidity of Louisiana, no one would normally dress that way unless they had to. Unlike his wife and daughter, the expression of impatience on Jérôme’s face tells you that he isn’t very supportive of bringing your krewe here. It was likely his wife and daughter’s idea. Either he doesn’t belief that the strange events in his home are supernatural, or he is angry over the embarrassment of calling paranormal investigators for help.

You’ve asked to come to the house in the late evening. The krewe and the Guillories have only just made introductions before retreating to the parlor. Claudine does all of the talking. Samantha is quiet; due to fear or shyness, you can’t say. Jérôme sits and studies each of you with a leer of skepticism. He hardly speaks.

"Thank you again for coming." Claudine smiles nervously between sips of tea. She gives you all glances of desperate hope that are painful to see. "We didn't know where else to turn. I was told that you deal with... this kind of problem. You came highly recommended by a woman who used to do the housekeeping here."

First contact with the living was always so much more awkward than with the Dead, especially when there was money involved. Honestly, cases like this went so much smoother when the 'client' wasn't paying but money was a necessity even for the Sin Eaters. Jay had sympathy for the mother and daughter but the father rubbed him the wrong way. He'd known men like him all his life, never on good or equitable terms, but he pushed that instant dislike aside for the sake of professionalism, curiosity and empathy for the rest of the family.
We do have a bit of experience dealing with unquiet spirits. Jay nodded his head, agreeing with Mrs. Guillory. Situations like this are our business, you could say. Understand that most of the time we get called out to investigate that there's a perfectly logical every-day reason for unusual happenings in a home or business...
Black mold toxicity is common in New Orleans homes, infrasound exposure from HVAC or plumbing, undiagnosed psychiatric issues and, believe it or not, even criminal extortion have all been causes of supposed hauntings we've investigated.
Jay leaned on the console table behind the setteé facing the mother and daughter. The Living always liked assurances that their world wasn't as weird as it really was. Putting them closer to their comfort zone usually helped ease tensions even if it wasn't exactly the truth. That doesn't mean we don't believe what you've seen or experienced but that there may be other explanations than the supernatural...just that we'll explore the mundane before going into the supernatural. Why don't you tell us more about your experiences in the home. Any previous unnatural occurances before moving here? Do you know any history on the house from before you moved in? Did anything happen before you began remodelling or did it begin afterward?

Long Man, the geist attached to Jay, lurked in a corner levitating just below the ceiling, his attention tuned towards the gruff distaste eminating from Mr. Guillory. The gray, gaunt nearly naked figure floated as if submerged, his long black hair swaying in unseen spectral currents.

Max sat across from Mr. Guillory watching him while Jay went through the standard disclaimers that they had learned were best to mention upfront when entering into a business relationship such as this. There were, after all, a host of mundane reasons that might explain what the family was experiencing. Max felt sure that the man sitting across from him had ruled most if not all of them out before consenting to this meeting. Still, it helped to acknowledge the mundane possibilities if only to reassure the client that just because they were 'Paranormal' investigators, they didn't let that limit their investigation.

When Jay concluded his introduction, Max cleared his throat, smiled, and made a point of looking Mr. Guillory directly in the eye as he added, "Regardless of whatever conclusion our investigation reaches, you can count on our discretion."

While not dressed as formally as Mr. Guillory, Max maintained a clean-cut, professional appearance. He wore a button-down Polo shirt with khaki slacks, and his hair, brown with hints of red and silver, was cut short; his beard and mustache closely trimmed. Max's Geist, The Forgotten, appeared in sharp contrast to the man to whom he was Bound. His form was indistinct, never quite appearing in focus, but he gave the impression of an unkempt pre-teen or teen-aged boy. Blurry or not, it was clear that his feet were bare and filthy, and his clothes were wrinkled and torn.

The Forgotten had followed Max as far as the parlor but hadn't gone inside. Instead, he wandered from one room of the house to another. The two of them had been together long enough that Max knew there was little he could do to contain what he had come to think of as boyish enthusiasm that The Forgotten displayed while familiarizing himself with a new environment. It was usually fine. The outcome would almost certainly be preferable to anything that might result from an effort on Max's part to contain him. Through their bond, Max knew roughly where his companion was and he seemed to be content with that.

Sitting with her legs crossed in the form-fitting black silk lounge pants, with matching long sleeved blouse of silk and black lace, and choker, the attractive green-eyed young woman with the short mop of hair like fire sits quietly observing everything. Glimpses of the inked body art adorning her lithe dancer's frame can be seen, if one should look hard enough, through the intricate black lace; especially about her décolletage. High end simple black pumps complete her ensemble.

Adriana subconsciously fidgets with the unique antique bracelet about her thin left wrist, as she twists it slight left and right with the thumb and index fingers. Her well-manicured and perfectly lacquered nails of silver-tipped ebony glint in the light, as she moves them at the bracelet.

She is yet undecided as to whether she has seen the white-collared and grey-suited Monsieur Jérôme Guillory as a frequent customer at Rick's. She knew his type all too well. Starch and proper before the eyes of family and genteel society, then slavering at the foot of the stage like a dog begging for the sights and scents of a private dancer's naked flesh and essence.

The Impure lurks up behind the man in a form of many haunted feminine faces and arms emerging and vanishing in an ephemeral vortex of misty tentacles. The Dread Geist has immediately conveyed, in so many gestures and its current form, their displeasure in the male skeptic's presence. It would be bad for Mr. Guillory to cause a ruckus while they loom. Though, to be honest, they didn't care much for most males of the human species.

Derek admired the style and design of the house and the fact it was still standing after the test of time. Although not famous enough for everyone to point out its creator it had character he thought as he and the others were ushered in leaving him mostly distracted. He sat with his satchel in his beige linen covered lap his toes wiggling in boat shoes as he scanned the moldings. He hadn't really felt out the man of the house but he did feel a bit jealous and coveted having his wife and daughter. He dismissed the idea when looking at the being next to his chair that opted to stare at the ceiling no doubt Derek figured musing about an ancient timber still supporting the house. If he wanted a family he would have started dating again... that just seemed too difficult and awkward still.

With a short inhale he adjusted the rolled up sleeves of his white linen shirt and leaned forward, "Could you retell us in your own words what has transpired over time again?" he requested looking to the lady and young miss of the house. Derek completely ignored The Driftwood King who had opted to make himself at home spreading out into a small field of wooden bits on the floor.

The Guillory family looks to Jay as he speaks. In response to his words, Claudine says, "We don't know of any previous occurrences in the house before we moved here. Prior to us, I believe the house had sat uninhabited for a long period. I will say that the house was surprisingly inexpensive when you consider the location and the market at the time. We assumed that it was because of the damage taken from Katrina." She takes a sip of tea and continues. "The... activity didn't start until we began remodeling, but we started remodeling almost immediately after moving in. As I said, the house had been uninhabited for a while so it needed some work. I've looked into the property history records at the Parish Assessor's Office, but I couldn't find any history of deaths at this house." Claudine places her cup down and shakes her head, ruefully. "The real estate agent never said a single thing to us about a haunting."

Claudine Guillory's last statement doesn't surprise any of you. The State of Louisiana doesn't require sellers to disclose when a property is "stigmatized" - meaning that it was the site of a murder or suicide. Consequently, your krewe has met more than a few individuals who unknowingly moved into homes with dark or tragic histories. The Guillories' story is, unfortunately, a familiar one.

At the mention of the word haunting, Jérôme Guillory glowers and audibly exhales through his nose. Claudine shoots her husband a look of disapproval. "You said that you'd try be open-minded," she says to him with an accusatory tone. At his wife's reproach, Jérôme folds his arms but nods to her in deference. When Max makes his statement about discretion, it's hard to say if Mr. Guillory is put at ease or not. Jérôme regards Max as though trying to gauge his sincerity.

Claudine shifts her attention to Derek as he speaks. She closes her eyes, taking a moment to gather her thoughts, and looks back at Derek. You can clearly see that the memories are uncomfortable for her to recall.

She exhales slowly before speaking. "It started when we began remodeling the first floor of the house. Carrollton was fortunate in that much of the neighborhood was spared during Katrina... the ground here is fairly high... but the area still got its share of flooding. Many of the houses in Carrollton sit on raised piers which also helped. Regardless, the exterior of the house needed some repairs. Mostly cosmetic stuff. We started renovating in the kitchen, as well. It wasn't long before the workers that we hired began complaining about strange noises and about tools going missing. They swore that someone was walking around the house, even when no one else was home."

She sighs. "Workers then began quitting. Some of them were religious, or simply superstitious, and they said something was wrong with the house... spiritually. We had a revolving door of workers for a while... couldn't keep any of them for more than a couple months. Over time, the activity got worse. At first, it was just strange and disconcerting. Then strange smells... flies everywhere... and a substance leaking from our walls. We began seeing things. And then a few months ago, the activity became aggressive." Claudine looks toward her daughter. "Honey, do you mind showing them? It's okay if you don't want to..."

Samantha Guillory has been keeping her eyes to the floor, though she occasionally shoots darting glances around the room. At her mother's request, the teenager nods and stands up. Jérôme leans forward in his chair and opens his mouth as though he's about to argue, but Samantha cuts him off. "It's fine, dad." Her voice has a strange weariness to it that's sad to hear coming from someone her age.

Samantha is wearing a light blue dress with floral print, puffy sleeves, and a pleated hem. Reluctantly, the girl pulls up the sleeve of each arm, revealing a trail of long scratch marks that recede up her shoulder. Some of the marks are faded and look old, while others are bright red and appear to be more recent. She then turns her back towards all of you, and you see more scratches beginning at the nape of her neck and trailing down below the dress' neckline. And then finally, Samantha very clinically pulls the hem of her dress just above her knee. Here you can see more scratches, as well as odd semi-circular markings that, chillingly, look like bite marks from human teeth. The markings seem to continue up her thighs.

As her daughter demonstrates her injuries, Claudine becomes teary-eyed and looks away. Jérôme watches and clenches his jaw in anger.
OOC:
Anyone who'd like to, give me a Wits + Composure roll. That's a basic perception roll in this system.

If you are new to the Storytelling System, roll a number of ten-sided dice equal to your Wits and Composure Attributes. For instance, if you have Wits 3 and Composure 2, you'll be rolling 5d10.

Any results of 8 or higher are considered successes. Re-roll any 10s, and keep re-rolling as long as you get 10s. As long as you get at least one success, you have succeeded at the roll. Five or more successes means you got an "exceptional success."

No successes means that you failed the roll. If you fail a roll, you may opt to make that failure a "dramatic failure." That indicates some kind of additional negative consequence, but in return, you receive a Beat. A Beat is used toward an experience point.

Adriana stops fidgeting with her bracelet the moment Samantha's first marks are revealed. She drops the slender hand down to her side to help hide the clenched fist, that betrays the redhead's anger that someone either alive or dead having injured this young girl so.

Max listens with growing concern as a familiar-sounding story becomes less and less so. Hearing Mrs. Guilllory talk about the haunting, seeing the tension between family members, and the bite and scratch marks on Samantha's back, arms, and legs drove home the fact that whatever they are dealing with here is extremely dangerous.

It wasn't necessary to see much beyond the initial sets of scratch marks, old and new, to see why such an uptight couple would seek out any kind of help they could. He remembered the helpless look in his mother's eyes when he came in hurt or angry or high; she wanted to help him, shield him, from harm but didn't have any idea how. That's the same look in Mrs. Guillory's eyes and it cut hard on an emotional level.

Neither of you have had any marks, cuts or bruises? Anything openly hostile to either of you or is it limited to visions, sounds or kidding objects? he asked the older Guillorys. The placement of the scratches and bites ruled out self harm. He'd seen kids who cut and bruised and bit and burned themselves due to emotional issues or trauma and what the girl displayed was assault.
While the injuries were shocking to see, and obviously traumatic for the girl, they were a method of communication just like the oozing walls and missing tools and visions. The problem was that the unquiet dead spoke a language unheard and not understood by the living. Frustration leads to escalation and attacks like this sometimes result.

Have you tried staying somewhere else for a few nights to see if the phenomenon follows you or of it's restricted to just the house? Do you have family nearby you could stay with for a few days?

For those of you who succeeded on the Perception roll, you noticed something about Samantha. Before she stood to show you all her injuries, she seemed scared about something. At first, it was safe to assume that she was scared about this whole situation. However, you caught her looking around the room several times and then immediately looking back toward the ground. She seems spooked by something in the room.

Since Max got an exceptional success (five successes), he gets some extra information.

Claudine returns her attention to Jay. "We've repeatedly gotten the feeling that we aren't wanted here. But neither of us have experienced any injuries. Not like our daughter has. The physical attacks only target her." She watches Samantha as the teenager sits back down and once again averts her eyes to the floor.

"Samantha and I moved out of here last week. We've been living out of a hotel in Uptown." Claudine looks at her husband, and Jérôme appears even more incensed. The departure of his wife and daughter is apparently a sore topic for Mr. Guillory. Claudine continues. "My husband, however, refuses to come with us. He stubbornly won't leave the house, not matter how much I beg."

She looks back to Jay. "Nothing seems to have followed us. The hotel is peaceful, and Samantha hasn't received any new injuries since we left. Whatever is causing the activity, it's relegated to this house."
Sep 14, 2021 12:55 pm
"Mrs. Guillory," Max begins, "you mentioned earlier that at some point during all of this you 'began seeing things'. Would you elaborate on that for me, please? Specifically, I'm curious about what was seen and by whom? Be as specific as you are able to remember. The key to all of this may be hiding in the details."

Even though he is addressing Mrs. Guillory, Max's gaze seems drawn to Samantha. He is paying almost as much attention to her as he is to her mother.
Sep 15, 2021 5:39 pm
Adriana notices how Samantha is looking fearfully about the room. Its almost like she can see the Krewe's Geists that are gathered here. She raises one brow slightly in curiosity and awaits a lull in the conversation to get a word of her own in. They have been very few in this meeting, as she is mostly observing and taking mental notes of the reveals in detail about the stigmatized situation in the home.

"Have any the three of you had accident or close call since moving to the residence? Is doesn't need be something happened in the house." She asks their clients with her slight Romanian accent, but looks mostly at the daughter.

'Could it be, she's one of us? She's a sensitive that is for certain.' She thinks.

The Impure shifts a few feet to see if the girl's eyes follow.

Claudine nods to Max. "Hmm... most of what we've seen have been... how do I describe it? Shadows. I suppose you could say that they're shadows. We've all seen them. They move at the edge of your vision. From the corner of your eye, you can tell something is standing there, but when you turn to look... nothing." As Claudine speaks, she hugs herself slightly; an unconscious gesture to comfort herself. "They don't look like anything or anyone specific... just black, human-like shapes. I've seen them in every part of the house, and at all different times of the day. My husband even once woke up to one watching him while he slept. He chased it down the hall thinking it was an intruder."

Jérôme furrows his brows and finally speaks. His deep voice has an exacting edge to it; he sounds like someone who is used to being in a position of professional authority. He also sounds more than a little annoyed. "We've already discussed this, Claudie. Of course it was an intruder. What else could it have been?" Mr. Guillory looks up from his wife and directs his attention to your krewe. "It was someone dressed in black clothing and a balaclava, nothing more. The police said that break-ins are not uncommon in a neighborhood like Carrollton."

Claudine shakes her head in exasperation. "It's not just that! There are other things!" She looks at Max and then the rest of the krewe. "Samantha has seen people. Not just shadows, but people." She turns to her daughter. "Tell them what you've told us, sweetie. Go on. It's alright."

Samantha shifts in her seat uncomfortably. She keeps her head tilted toward the floor but manages to glance up at each of you. Her soft voice has an undertone of dread. "I see a woman. She... visits me at night sometimes in my room. She looks normal except that she's all red... like someone colored her with a red marker. I call her Ruby." The teen pauses ominously. You all can see the goosebumps rising on her arms. "And she says that she's hungry. Always hungry."

Samantha stops speaking. You're uncertain if she's finished what she has to say, or if she needs some time to gather herself. Adriana takes the opportunity to ask her question. In response, Claudine takes a moment to think. She then shakes her head. "Accident? No, not really." She directs a query back to the Romanian Sin-Eater. "What do you mean by close call?"

At that moment, Adriana's Geist decides to move several feet from its original position behind Mr. Guillory. Immediately, Samantha's eyes dart to the side. For a few awkward seconds, she stares wide-eyed at a spot just above and behind her father's chair. Jérôme gives his daughter a confused look and turns to see what's caught her attention. When he can perceive nothing, he turns back to face his family.

"It's happening again," he remarks to his wife, before shifting focus to his daughter. Jérôme's voice noticeably softens in a way that sounds out of character for the man. "Samantha, remember what Doctor Glasser told you. Did you take your medication this morning?"

The girl gradually redirects her attention back to her father but doesn't respond.

Jay listens as the conversation back and forth provides a bit more clarity to the Guillory's story even though little of the truth of the matter is revealed. I know what's happening to you , Samantha, is weird and terrifying and beyond anything you or your parents have ever experienced. I know it's taking a big chance telling us, a bunch of strangers, what's happened to you. It's hard to understand events like this when nothing in your life prepares you that the world is so much stranger than normal life let's on. Jay shifted and leaned forward a bit to address Samantha more than her parents. Death, what it means and what comes after, is something that isn't dealt with in modern society. What's happened to you, Samantha, isn't okay and it isn't normal. This 'Red Lady' ...Ruby... probably doesn't really mean to harm you. She may be as scared and confused, as you all are, or acting out because she doesn't understand what's happening to her. We'll get to the bottom of what's going on and give you all the help you need.
Sometimes just the fact that someone empathized with those in need went a long way in buying needed relief. There was a time when his selfish attitudes and 'me first' mentality hurt everyone close to him and it only took dying to realize the error of his ways... In the ceiling corner, Long Man shifted in his spectral currents as the girl reacted to The Impure's movements calling Jay's attention to the girl's perception beyond the Veil.
Is Dr. Glasser your therapist? Could you tell us exactly what it is you're seeing right now, Samantha? he ask the girl before turning to Mrs. Guillory. What medications does he have her on?
