"Oh I don't mean a Sin Eater... I mean she has a foot on both sides."

One of the newly emergent ghosts steps forward. Bathed in the liminal auras of the krewe, her appearance grows more vibrant. She takes on color and crispness, but so do the wounds on her Corpus. Chunks of flesh are missing from her left cheek and lips with only bloody flaps of ripped skin in their place. Her gums and teeth are exposed in a sort of rictus grin. She's young and dressed like a hiker.

"She carries a mask..." says the woman. Missing part of her face makes her voice sound slurred. "When she puts it on, she changes."

That's when all of you notice the flickering of lights coming from the inside of the kitchen. The patio lights also gutter and come back on. Even the screen of Derek's phone glitches for a few seconds.

Adriana

Mr. Guillory walks into the kitchen from the backyard. He heads to the sink and starts washing his hands. Claudine looks to him. "What's happening outside? Did you find anything?" she asks her husband.

Jérôme shrugs. "Just nonsense. They're having conversations with invisible people."

Claudine furrows her brows but doesn't respond. She watches from the window for another minute before moving away and grabbing the coffee pot.

"Coffee?" she asks, as she tilts the coffee pot toward your mug. In that instant, the kitchen lights flicker slightly.

Drying his hands, Jérôme glances at the ceiling light fixtures and frowns. "Not again," he mutters. The lights flicker a second time, and Mr. Guillory shakes his head. "The electrical is on the fritz again." Claudine also looks at the lights but with a wholly different expression. One of dread.

Samantha's hand tightens around yours. The girl looks pale.
Oct 5, 2021 6:25 pm
"No thanks." Adriana replies to Claudine Guillory and sets the mug down. She reflexively glances to the lights and squeezes Samantha's hand. "Does the electricity do this when SHE comes?" Adriana asks and looks into the faces of her geist. "Brace yourselves. We may have very unwelcome visitor."

The dead girl's comment about Ruby wearing a mask cut right through to the heart of the matter. She's a Reaper.. Jay stated the obvious. Can we handle a Reaper?. He feared that without knowing more about the Red Lady, they'd have a rough time of it even with the krewe and their Geists. Ruby had previous experience with the Bound while they had zero experience with her...
Is there anything she, the Red Lady, avoids or cannot stand to be around? Any bit of information you might have would help against her. Jay asked of the assembled shades. The trembling, flickering of the lights lent a bit of urgency to the matter.
Maybe we should get Adrianna and the Guillory's out of the house if the gate is directly underneath it. I'm not sure if it wouldn't get pulled down below if Ruby tried to get at Samantha.

The ghost's mention of the mask was all Max needed to confirm his suspicion. I think you're on to something there...", he began, but cut himself off abruptly when the lights started flickering inside.

"Too late", Max said as he started toward the kitchen door. "Come on!"

He didn't wait for Jay and Derek, but he hoped they were right behind him. All he could think about was Adriana. He had asked her to look after Samantha, and he knew that she would. Unfortunately, she still thought that they were dealing with a ghost. He had to get to her before she figured it out the hard way.

The gathered ghosts noticeably tense up when the lights begin flickering. All of them look toward the space beneath the house. Your geists also seem to sense something amiss and shift their attention to the same location. An active Avernian gate usually siphons Essence from nearby ghosts, which makes it easy for the dead to feel when one has opened.

Almost immediately after the lights in the kitchen flicker, the ghosts themselves also flicker slightly, disappearing and reappearing for split seconds at a time. It's like watching holographic projections that are glitching.

Several of the shades begin to look panicked, but Jay's question keeps the attention of a few. William Fields Sr. strains to think of something. He snaps his fingers as though on the verge of remembering a snippet of information. "Uh... I... I know there's... I know there's somethin' but my mind is too hazy..."

The woman with the missing face speaks up. "Green!" she exclaims, urgently. "I've seen her destroy green colored things in the house, or steal them. Anytime the family has something green in the house, she breaks it or takes it. But I've never seen the color actually hurt her."

"That's right!" says William. "She ain't fond of that color. It's the opposite of red on the color wheel. I remember that much from school."

Although your krewe's experience with Reapers is limited, every Sin-Eaters understands some basics. As Rank 3 ghosts, Reapers tend to possess obscure banes and bans. While the color green is perhaps a good start, you also know that it's too common for the color alone to be a weakness. Furthermore, you know that Reapers without their death masks are no more powerful than any other Rank 2 ghost. It's not until they don their masks that they gain a Rank and transform into full-on Reapers. As with all Rank 3 ghosts, Reapers (as well as geists) can exist in the Material World without Anchors and don't struggle with Essence Bleed. They can also travel in and out of the Underworld with ease.

If Ruby is a Reaper, it explains how she can come and go from the Guillory's home. She doesn't need to worry about staying close to an Anchor.
OOC:
The term "Rank," in the context of ghosts, is specifically an out-of-game term. I'm just using it in these posts for ease of explanation. Sin-Eaters don't typically rate ghosts by a Rank system, but they sense and understand that some ghosts are clearly more powerful than others. That said, occultists and mages have organized ghosts into hierarchies, and some Bound might use those terms.

As Max rushes into the kitchen, Jérôme and Claudine both turn to look at him. Mr. Guillory raises an eyebrow. "What's wrong," he asks.

Very suddenly, the room starts to go cold. The temperature in the kitchen rapidly drops by a dramatic degree, as though someone just threw open the door of a large walk-in freezer. Everyone's breath becomes visible as small misty clouds of condensed moisture. Claudine hugs her arms from the abrupt chill.

"What the hell..." exclaims Jérôme watching his own breath. He looks at his wife. "Shouldn't be this cold in here. It's over 80 degrees outside. Did someone crank the AC?"

The heads of Adriana's geist stare down at the tiled floor in expectation of something. Fearfully, Samantha gets up and positions herself behind Adriana. Several appliances in the room begin turning on and off. The coffee machine percolates for several seconds and then suddenly stops. A radio in the corner spontaneously emits the sound of fluctuating music as stations quickly change. The ice maker in the refrigerator activates, rumbles, and spews dozens of cubes of ice onto the kitchen floor.

Claudine gasps and clasps a hand over her own mouth.

Thanks for having the courage to help us help the Guillory family. Jay addressed the assembled shades. You risked everything for us and we'll do everything we can to help you pass on if ... After we deal with the Red Lady.. His tone wasn't exactly hopeful of their coming out on top but he wouldn't let that stop him from doing everything in his power to help Samantha and the shades assembled around them.

He can't his eyes about for anything green he might take with him into the kitchen. He didn't have much time so he had to settle on the first thing that came into sight. Fishing out his pocket knife, he severed a good sized leafy branch from the greenery-heavy shrubs lining the side of the Guillory's home before dashing inside with the others. The cold air biting his sweat-damped, mud-streaked skin as soon as he slid through the doorway let him know he was in the right place. The shades said she hates the color green... Not sure if it'll bind her but it's all we got aside from brute force.

"I'll take any edge we can get," Max replied to Jay. Then he looked at Adriana and said, "We think we're dealing with a Reaper. Be careful."

If she is a Reaper, why is she doing this? Max wondered. Reapers are supposed to be up here hunting ghosts to return them to the underworld, not to feed on them. Does that give us some leverage?

Max didn't know, but as he'd said, he'd take any edge they could get.
OOC:
I don't know why it didn't occur to me to ask this sooner, but can we use plasm from a cenote in excess of the normal limits like we can with the extra plasm we get when using a key to open a haunt? I am wondering if I should have gathered it up to keep her from getting it? Also, I still have one charge left on the Shroud so it may still be possible to do so, if that is a thing Sin-Eaters can do.

"A reaper?" Adriana says in a surprised tone and stays protectively with Samantha.

'Not good. Not exactly how I saw the initial meet with a new client going.' She shares only with her geist. 'Guess we should be prepared to put on our game face. I hope it doesn't traumatize our sensitive too much. The Krewe could benefit from someone like her as a celebrant in the not-to-distance future.'

Derek

As Jay rushes inside, William looks at you and your geist. His eyes are wide. "She's here."

On cue, the other ghosts begin the hurriedly scatter and retreat back into the darkness. William watches them leave and looks to you, apologetically. "I'm sorry, but I can't stay either. If you can't stop her... well, she'll take it out on us afterwards." He nods and tips his hat in your direction. "Best of luck. I'll pray for you... all of you."

With that, William Fields Sr. quickens his pace and disappears through a rock wall.

Almost as suddenly as they started, the various appliances cease their spontaneous activity. The kitchen is now deathly quiet except for the sounds of everyone breathing.

This is when you see it. A form starts to emerge from the floor; rising through the tiles as though riding atop a slow moving elevator. The newcomer's Corpus depicts a Caucasian woman, once in her thirties perhaps, and marked by a slim build, aquiline nose, and a head of straight hair reaching down to the small of her back. Her clothing is several centuries out of fashion: a ruffled muslin gown with wrist-length sleeves, a sash at the waist, and a caraco jacket worn open at the front. It vaguely brings to mind the styles of colonial era New Orleans. Were it not for her menacing air, she looks like she could have stepped off the set of a period drama.

Most notable of all, however, is that her entire Corpus is a deep vermillion hue. She's not painted red or covered in blood. Rather, it's as though someone turned the color tint on the television as far to red as possible. In keeping with her name, everything about the Red Lady - her skin, her clothes, her eyes - is literal crimson of varying shades. Obviously, "red" is not a figure of speech in her case. Only her hair retains a strong contrast from the rest of her form. You can tell that, in life, her hair must have been very dark, indeed.

Claudine and Jérôme are oblivious to the Red Lady's presence, but Samantha definitely seems to sense her. She takes a few quick glances from behind Adriana.

The woman's bearing is strange; a quiet confidence that isn't often seen among the desperate, beaten-down legions of the dead. "O' Eaters of Sin? Perchance there is a reason you have trespassed into my abode, pray tell?"

Her voice is pleasant but forceful. She speaks with the self-assuredness of a being with several centuries of experience. Slowly, she shifts her gaze around the room and makes eye contact with each of the Bound. Her eyeballs have pupils but no irises; as hard as blood red marbles. "T'would behoove you to answer me, promptly."

She clearly notices your geists, but if she is concerned, the dead woman doesn't show it. Unlike a majority of ghosts, the Red Lady seems largely unperturbed by the presence of your Other Halves.
OOC:
@the_puppeteer, Plasm collected from a cenote can't be used to accumulate Plasm points beyond your normal limit. That said, you could use that Plasm to replenish what you spent on The Shroud. You'd need to take the time to directly gather it and eat it, however.

Max watched with trepidation as Ruby rose up into the room from the little cemetery below the house. She was nothing like what he expected. Her strange, technicolor appearance and unusual speech pattern somehow supported her confidant demeanor. She was clearly accustomed to being obeyed.

Max couldn't help but wonder how long it had been since anyone had stood up to her and he hoped that they would be able to navigate the situation without it escalating into a fight. He quickly decided that the best thing to do, for now at least, was to play along; gather as much information as they could. He hoped that everyone else was thinking along the same lines. To that end, he cleared his throat and introduced himself.

"Hi, I'm Max. Apparently, the young lady of the house has been waking up with some disturbing marks on her body. It almost looks like she has been scratched and bitten by someone. Her parents are beside themselves over it, as I'm sure you can imagine. So, they hired us to help them figure out what is happening to her and to make sure that it doesn't happen again."

"We were under the impression that this was their house, though. Ms...? I'm sorry. If you introduced yourself, I completely missed it. With whom do we have the pleasure of speaking?"
OOC:
Max has the Doomed condition from the key of chance. I considered spending a willpower point on this roll, but wasn't sure if those dice would be considered bonus dice or not. If so, that would force me to roll a chance die instead and would resolve the condition. I decided I'd better not do that without having that clarified first.

Your 'abode' doesn't involve this world, this home or this family. Jay gestured back to the Guillorys behind him. We're here because you have intruded into the living world where you do not belong. This home might have been your own once but now that you've passed it no longer belongs to you and neither does the girl nor the shades you hold captive. We can help you find resolution and move on, if you wish, but this... he gestures broadly around, waving the shrub branch, ...has to stop. You're afraid of moving on or unable to and we can help with that but you have to understand that if you're unwilling to move on or leave this place and this family alone we cannot allow that to continue. Both the living and the dead clung to power (perceived or real) when they could because it gave them a sense of control...and that was something very attractive to the unquiet dead. Jay didn't think the Red Lady would easily relinquish what power she held willingly. At least not until he had filled whatever void kept her between the world of the living and the dead. A thought occurred to him, reflecting on what one of the shades had said.
What are you looking for here, Ruby? he addressed her by the name Samantha had given her. It's something green, right?

OOC:
In regard to Reapers, you all know that they have a mandate to hunt down lesser ghosts and drag them to the Underworld. This instinctive need to reap the dead is only present when they wear their death mask. There are accounts of Reapers that have delayed the pursuit of their duty for various reasons, but all of them seem to eventually give in and do it. Who issues this "duty" is not known to the Bound, or even seemingly to Reapers. Maybe it's the Chthonic Gods. Maybe it's the Underworld itself.

As for Ruby's odd appearance, there could be a number of reasons for it. A ghost's Corpus (body) is composed of "ephemera," which is just Plasm in its unmanifested Twilight form. Some ghosts possess the ability to manipulate their own Corpus: a numen known as "Moliate." The dead have been known to dabble in Moliate in order to make themselves look like they did in life, though those with sufficient skill at Moliation can reshape a Corpus in odd ways. It's possible that Ruby's red hue is a bizarre result of the Moliate power.

Alternately, some ghosts have been known to be born with strange features marking their Corpuses. These are involuntary on the ghost's part, and they can range from crowns and glowing auras, to internal organs floating outside the ghost's body. Usually, such a feature is symbolic of the ghost's life or personality in some way. For instance, a ghost that felt the weight of major responsibilities in life might find that in death, much like Jacob Marley, her Corpus is wrapped in thick, heavy chains.

Sin-Eaters refer to these features as "iconographies." No one knows what causes them, or why some ghosts have them and others don't. The leading theory is that the ghost subconsciously molds its own Corpus to reflect a deep-seated fear, regret, or desire. Thus, Ruby's appearance could be some form of iconography.

Ruby slowly shifts her gaze to Max when he begins speaking. Something about the gradual turning of her head reminds you of a tank turret swiveling to acquire a target. When he asks her name, she raises an eyebrow.

"Long has it been since my name has been asked of me. You must be a Frenchman..." She bends her knees and bows her head slightly. The gesture looks very strange coming from her. "In days of old, I was known as Lady Marguerite de Clouet, Viscountess de la Ronde... but that was long ago..."

At Max's question, she says "I have been ingressing and egressing from this location long before there was a home built upon it. Many of the living have dwelled here through the years, but I never paid them much mind. They are not my charge." She gives Claudine and Jérôme a look of utter disdain. They clearly have little value in her eyes. "After the great storm whence came the floods, I found the place abandoned, and so it became my staging ground."

As Ruby speaks, she starts looking at your geists, almost assessing them. She regards Adriana's geist the most closely. "T'was naught but myself in this abode... until the arrival of the barrister and his kin. They intrude upon me, not I upon them."

At this point Ruby's manner has been genteel, although maybe with an edge of warning to it. She seems to be adhering to some old sense of courtesy, perhaps a relic of her upbringing. When Jay addresses her, however, the ghost's demeanor rapidly changes. "I go where I wish, Eater of Sin," she says with a snarl. When he waves the branch, Ruby's eyes narrow. You even see her lean slightly away from him.

I don't believe the Doom would yet apply. I think the reference to bonus dice means any extra dice bestowed by Merits, equipment, or supernatural abilities. A dice pool consisting of your base Skill + Attribute will be unaffected. At least that's my understanding of it, so the roll is fine as is.
