I didn't see it coming either. I figured he'd just set up some sort of posthumous pirate scavenger hunt and the placed he'd put the clues were relevant to his life somehow. Maybe hidden a treasure from a mundane rival or embezzled business partner. More 'Hardy Boys' than supernatural.
