This appendix provides players with an easy way to
create characters with compelling ties to the events of
Hoard o f the Dragon Queen.

B a c k g r o u n d T e m p l a t e
Below is a background template that applies to any
background that you select or create. You can replace
or augment some or all of the options in your chosen
background with one or more of the elements given
below. Each section tells you whether it replaces or adds
to your background.
T h e St o r y T h u s Fa r ..
As the Cult of the Dragon has grown bolder, its actions
have drawn attention. Your character has stumbled into
the Cult’s scheme in some manner or has a connection
to dragons. The following tables provide you with bonds
tailored to this campaign. Use them in place of or in
addition to the ones you selected from (or created for)
your background.


B o n d (d 10)
1. Leosin Erlanthar, a wandering monk, once saved your life.
He’s sent urgent word for you to meet him in a small town
called Greenest. Looks like it’s time to pay off that debt.
2. When an orc raid drove your family from your home, the
people of Greenest took you in. Anyone who threatens
Greenest is your sworn enemy.
3. Every five nights, you have a strange sequence of apocalyptic
dreams. The world is destroyed by cold, choking fumes,
lightning storms, waves of acid, and horrible fire. Each
time, the dream ends with ten evil eyes glaring at you from
the darkness. You feel a strange compulsion to travel to
Greenest. Perhaps the answer to the riddle of your dreams
awaits you there.
4. Ontharr Frume, a crusading warrior and champion of good,
is your friend and mentor. He has asked you to travel to
Greenest in search of rumors of increasing dragon activity.
5. You have heard rumors that your close childhood friend, a
half-elf named Talis, has been kidnapped by a strange group
of dragon cultists. Your investigations into the cult have led
you to the town of Greenest. You must save her!
6. Being the grandchild of a renowned dragon slayer is usually
a good way to impress people, but just last week a gang of
ruffians attack you. You barely escaped with your life, but
as you fled, the ruffians told you that the Cult of the Dragon
never forgets and always avenges. You’re hoping to lie low in
a sleepy little town called Greenest until this blows over.
7. On his deathbed, your father confessed that he had become
involved with a group called the Cult of the Dragon. They
paid him to smuggle goods across the Sword Coast. Wracked
by guilt, he begged you to investigate the cult and undo the
evil he may have helped foster. He urged you to begin your
search in a town called Greenest.
8. The dragons destroyed everything you hold dear. They killed
your family and destroyed your home. Now, with nothing
but what you carry on your back and a horrid scar of the near
fatal wounds you sustained in the attack, you seek revenge.
9. You and your family were members of the Cult of the Dragon,
until your rivals in the cult arranged to wipe you out. Though
they slaughtered your kin, you survived, but they think
you’re dead. Now is your chance for vengeance! Your hit
list consists of three names: a human cultist named Frulam
Mondath, a half-orc named Bog Luck, and a half-dragon
named Rezmir. You have arrived in Greenest, knowing it’s
next on the cult’s list of targets.
10. You have a secret. You once were a gold dragon who served
Bahamut. You were too proud and vain, to the point that
Bahamut decided to teach you a lesson. You have been
trapped in a weak, humanoid body, with your memories of
your former life but a dim shadow. You remember only one
thing with perfect clarity: Bahamut’s command to go into the
world and prove your devotion to the cause of good. If you
prove worthy, on your death you will return to his side in your
true form.

Below are two optional features that you can choose
in place of the feature normally granted by your
background.

I n f i l t r a t o r
You have infiltrated the ranks of the Cult of the Dragon.
Having spied on the organization for quite some time,
you are familiar with its inner workings and customs.
You have a second identity as an initiate of the cult,
enough of a facade to blend in as a simple grunt or
servant.
O p t i o n a l F e a t u r e : D r a g o n S c h o l a r
You have studied dragons and their lore for many years.
You can automatically identify locations built or used
by dragons and can identify dragon eggs and scales by
sight. If you fail an Intelligence check to recall lore relating to dragons, you know someone or some book you
can consult for the answer unless the DM rules that the
lore is unknown.

These examples helps you to find a background that you want to start this adventure.
Either you roll or you pick one up or you create something similar

I like it! I'll be taking number 4: Ontharr Frume, a crusading warrior and champion of good, is your friend and mentor. He has asked you to travel to Greenest in search of rumors of increasing dragon activity.

It fits well with the wandering knight that's likely made some connections with other champions of good along the way.

millyk, actually could I double check, when we will be levelling up and choosing sub-class we could choose any from PHB or XGtE (though you may not welcome paladin subclass Oath of Conquest)
I plan to choose Circle of the Shepherd from XGtE and want you to confirm this before finalise my character. I want to reflect aspects of Shepherd in the character himself.

If Shepherd is OK I would like to choose Dragon Scholar, 3. Every five nights, you have a strange sequence of apocalyptic dreams.
This druid is to contact civilisation to figure out how to prevent dragons feeding upon animals and burning the forests (if I correctly understand what is going in the world out campaign begins in)

Sounds like we have a Fighter and a Druid so I'm going mage-type.

I'm thinking about being a Gold Dragonborn that was once a Gold Dragon. (#10)
I will be a Sorceror and probably going Divine Soul (Law). Particularly if GreyWord doesn't plan on leaning heavily into healing.

Sounds great and no I don't plan to be a healer, will only have a healing word just in case anyone KO

I'm also picking variant human and my feat is Resilient(constitution) to reflect how ability to survive in the wilds without medical attention and without proper hygiene

Hi. Just wondering whether anything will have changed (level, etc) for character creation, or should I still be starting with level 1? Followup question, do you allow Tasha's character options?

We are still level 1.

I allow to choose races, classes etc only from Player's handbook and Xanathar's guide to everything.

Can you allow custom sheets? I used one of the custom 5e ones someone created to make it easier to use.

We decided not using roll20 anymore....but I I will need to add you for screenshots and I am using it. Also you need to put your character sheet here, I suggest to use dnd and then you can copy it automatically, there is a link here explaining how, if I remember correctly.
You cant use custom sheets, because we are using the sheets at roll20 and here...

The character sheet is set up on here, it's just not the default GP 5e format. I will get it entered into the default, though, that's not a problem. I have everything figured out, just haven't copied it over, yet. Should be able to get that done tonight.

@Paximilian about the background from which book you took it?

I took the infiltrator feature from your list and then picked 2 languages and 2 skills, per the guidelines in the PHB.

ok cool ... its correct you can have two backgrounds.... the one from the list is only for the reason you are against the cult and the other background from the books is also for the stat or extras etc. Which guidelines in PHB?

The last section of Page 125. I suppose I didn't choose equipment from an existing background, so I guess I'll take the urchin equipment.

Basically that section says if you don't like the existing backgrounds, choose a feature, choose 2 skills to be proficient in, a total of 2 of either languages or tool proficiencies (2 L's, 2 TP's, or one of each), and the equipment from a background.

I chose the bond from your list and then wrote the other personality stuff myself.

it looks like no one picked that one yet. So I grew up as a merchant (sailor background) transporting and selling goods from one land to another. We would get attacked by pirates from time to time who dressed up like the law and my job was to heal my family when damaged. Not knowing that the family business was much more than just being a merchant but a smuggling family contracted by the Cult of the Dragon. On is last days he told me he did it since it was good money but money wont buy peace and to learn from his mistakes. On his last day he requested that I investigate the cult and undo the evil he caused so that he may rest in peace and told me to start in Greenest.

Please let me know if I need to make any adjustments. Am I the last one everyone is waiting for?
