The Changing Hunt

Jan 10, 2022 4:35 pm
You all walk into the Wavecrest Tavern and you are greeted by a large, built man with a mug in his hand that he is drying off.

"Ah, you look worn out from a stressful sea voyage. Welcome to Stormreach. Here, sit at this table.

What can I get you all?"

He is a big dwarf with hardly any neck, great brawny shoulders, and wild blonde hair. He has a great big bear skin draped over his shoulders, and the mouth of the bear forms a sort of hood, the teeth making something of an upside-down crown. In stark contrast, he wears glasses, the new kind, mounted in thin wire. He also has two prominent tattoos: an axe and lightning, crossed over a shattered gatehouse, on the back of his fist; and five blue stars on his knuckles. Those in the know might recognize these as military insignias of the Mror Howlers, a Dwarven mercenary unit from the Last War.

He scans the new arrivals, trying to decide if they're trouble. Once he's satisfied, he strides to the bar. Whatever his observations were, he doesn't share them.

He turns to the barkeep and starts up a conversation. "I thought you don't rent rooms, Sigmund. This place is getting crowded. At least tell me you got some more of that mushroom beer? I'll take it in my tankard. Many thanks."

He keeps an eye on these newcomers.

Sigmund walks to the bar, grabs three mugs and places them on the table, in front of Kevin, Gunnar, and Ghillie.

He then walks back, grabs a wine bottle and places it into a leather satchel open on his hip, and then grabs and wine glass and a pitcher of the beer, and then walks over and places the pitcher on the table, as well as placing the glass in front of Alin. He uncorks the bottle and pours, saying, "This here is a good pirate's vintage, if you'll have it. Used to be the stuff of pirate admirals, 'til it came into my hands. Hope you enjoy it. You should really read the label on the bottom of the bottle.

"Well, I'll leave you to it, for now. Gotta get the messy man's floral food, and get the place ready for the arm-wrestling competition."
Jan 11, 2022 10:35 pm
Gunnar squints suspiciously at mention of looking at the label.

"Usually if I look at the bottom of the bottle it's because it's empty," he says but he flips it over anyway and looks to see what the label says. His gran always said his curiosity would be the end of him.

Jan 12, 2022 12:46 am
Alin wipes the wine glass and pours a small amount, he makes a show of swirling it, smelling it and taking a small sip. "The message on the bottom seems to be the ravings a of a pirate who has had too much of this vinegar. Perhaps the only thing relevant is that the pirate may have been a person such as you my friend in the bear cloak, and like my friend Kevin here. " Alin pours half glass of the red liquid into his glass. "I don't think we have your name yet sir, but I shall start. I am Alin of Mistmarch. Pleased, I hope, to meet you."

He poured some of the mushroom beer, sniffed it, sampled a bit with his tongue, then swallowed a mouthful.

"I enjoy the deep yet not overly rich almost maple quality. A fine brew... but why would it have a shopping list of words underneath?"

You all see people start to trickle into the tavern slowly, and Sigmund comes out with a couple of barmaids to help seat and serve.

Sigmund also brings out a salad and says, "Hope you enjoy this. It has some local vegetation from here. I had the cook cut down the size of the leaves, since this particular leafy base is the size of an adult human. The flavors in these local leaves I hope is to your liking."

He then walks around the table next to Kevin, nidges him with his forearm, and says, "Gunnar here is the reigning champion of the arm wrestling matches we run every week. I think you should put your hat in the ring, friend."
Jan 12, 2022 5:32 pm
Gunnar peels off the label so that the engineer doesn't get between a dwarf and his cups. He'll double check that the inside of the label doesn't have any clues.

"No pirate I've known is that smart. I'll wager there's a clue inside the bottle. Or maybe the alcohol has an enchantment so that if you're drunk enough, you can read the blasted thing. I know I always think clearer with a little fermented mushroom to buttress my noggin."

Gunnar is mostly just making excuses to drink, but will pour out the bottle into the remaining and cups and peer inside for a clue before drinking his share of the alcohol.

About the arm wrestling he adds "No magical or mechanical funny business, though."

After a few minutes, once Sigmund gets names filled out on the sheet, he pulls it away and says, "Alright, let me randomize these names, and we will do a standard tournament style. Gunnar, you have unlimited refills on mushroom beer until the winner of the tournament is ready to challenge your seat!"

After a few minutes, Sigmund comes back with a tiered tournament bracket (similar to a March Madness bracket), and some barmaids bring out some numbers that they post onto the middle of the tables. He announces:

"Table 1: Gunter vs. Trayvon; Table 2: Siggy vs. SAM; Table 3: ..."

He names a bunch of different names, and then a bunch of smelly men gather the various numbered tables (yours is not one of them), and then Sigmund says, "Alright, you have 15 minutes to place bets with my barmaid at each table, and each will manage those."
Jan 20, 2022 4:36 pm
A beautiful, attention-grabbing barmaid walks to your table, walks up to Kevin and says, "Oh, you weren't interested in joining up, eh?"

After the upcoming rounds, the tourney whittled down to the final four, then what Sigmund calls the "semi-final", when 2 patrons battle it out: a hulking, strange-looking warforged without a traditional forehead symbol named SAM, with a skulking Halfling hovering around him as though he were his boxing trainer, and a muscle-bound, foul-speaking and -smelling half-orc named Halgreave.

The "semi-final" seems to last for a year, as the two battle it out, the arms locked and swaying to one side and then the other. Finally, with a triumphant THUD, SAM beats Halgreave. His Halfling friend collects their winnings from the bets he made in the bar, and he smiles from ear to ear, as SAM glows a bright blue in his eyes, and a strange smile fills his crude-looking mouth, also.

Sigmund then says, "Alright folks! What’s next, but what you all really came for: ta see the reigning champion ousted from his high throne."

The barmaid walks alongside Gunnar and raises his arm up high above his head, as Sigmund says, "Bets’ll run for the next 30 minutes, and then we will have the match of the century: The surly dwarf vs. the machine and ‘is oaf!"

Gunnar grits his teeth. He squeezes the warforged's stone hand so tightly that rivulets of blood soon begin to trickle down his forearm.

The warforged was strong, yes. Stone and metal are strong - every dwarf knows this. But what is stronger than that?

My clan!

As the contest rages, spectral warriors begin to appear. Ethereal Dwarves in shades of blue and white standing shoulder to shoulder, larger than life. They sing in unison their warrior song, the song of the Mror Howlers!

Self harm is good! I love the flavor of your post, @Len!
Between the insult, the distraction of Alin to the halfling, and the sheer force of strength displayed by Gunnar, the metal arm of the warforged buckles, and Gunnar wins the match! Many people are dismayed by the turn of events, but the halfling that was distracted by Alin's ghost blade actually ends up collecting many winnings (you surmise that he actually bet against his companion). The barmaid comes and delivers 110 gold coins to Kevin, and SAM puts his hand out and says, "Congratulations on the victory, friend! Perhaps we can talk soon! I would love to learn more about your ancestors, and how you channel them to fuel your strength. Interesting method of empowering yourself."

The halfling and the defeated warforged exit as the patrons of the bar revel and regale in the stories of the Mror Howlers' spirits aiding their companion to defeat a warforged titan (yes, embellishments are levied, as many are drunk and have poor memories).

Alin would excuse themselves and follow the halfling and the odd Warforged stealthily. Just to find their next stop, and then return to the rest of the team.

Upon return to the bar, Alin would plan to quietly question the barkeep about the notes.
Feb 4, 2022 5:08 pm
After the match, Kevin grabs Alin, and go ask Sigmund for a room
Feb 4, 2022 5:51 pm
"Well played, good dwarf," Ghillie said and raised his mug. "A worthy victory of the living over the inert."
Feb 4, 2022 6:03 pm
OOC:
Alin, are you going to follow Kevin's suggestion, or avoid him and continue following?
Feb 5, 2022 3:44 pm
Gunnar looks at Ghillie wide-eyed.

"You lot must be some stone-cold bastards! People are usually pretty freaked out when a bunch of Dwarf ghosts appear out of nowhere singing a tune. WAIT! Are you ghosts?"

Gunnar pokes Ghillie sharply with his finger to check if he is corporeal.
Feb 5, 2022 5:36 pm
"I've been buried and left for dead before yet here I am. As the body decomposes, so does the soul, and ghosts are merely part of that cycle sometimes. You shouldn't fear them unless they're angry at you," Ghillie explained as Gunnar's finger poked into the druid's living armour and ended up knuckle deep in a truffle.
Feb 7, 2022 4:58 pm
Sigmund walks up to Gunnar, slaps him on the shoulder, and says, "My, my! You're always good for a show o' force, eh, my friend?!?

"Your drinks are on me, Gunnar, and here's your room key."
He drops the key into Gunnar's hand.

He then looks at Kevin and says, "So, the note says your friends with Viktor, eh? Alright, you get a room here for a week. There may be something in there for you to see. I'd be on me way over there, if I was you."
OOC:
Do you all head to the room? Gunnar, you know where the rooms are, but the rest of the crew does not.

Gunnar empties a nearby mop bucket and fills it with tankard after tankard of mushroom beer.

"Now my job is done, I can properly enjoy my justly-earned rewards!"

He drinks straight from the bucket, the excess spilling down his beard a bit.

To Ghillie, be responds: "Sure, a rroom is an excellent place ta get drunk! If ye pass out, the bed is righ' there!" His Mror accent gets thicker the more he drinks.

He heads off to the room with the others, bucket in hand. On the way he grabs an empty bucket. "Might be handy later. Just gotta make sure I don't mix the two up!"
Feb 9, 2022 7:41 am
Kevin notes the buckets. He then produces a snort string from one of his many pockets. A knot on the handle of the shit bucket. Buckets without knots are for drinking water. Gunnar recognises a tried and tested system from the battle front.
Feb 9, 2022 8:24 am
He looks at Kevin, dumbfounded.

"Bloody genius. That might have saved me from a few unpleasant memories in days gone by - Bwahaha!!!"

He takes another swig. And another.
Feb 9, 2022 1:20 pm
After Alin collects a little information about who they suspect is the target of an old job gone cold, they would come back to talk to Sigmund when when the others had gone to their rooms.

Gunnar turns as he hears his name and burst into laughter so hard he nearly spills his bucket.

"Bwhaha! Is that Mrak? You're too bloody late! I already won!"

His laughter fills the hall like roaring lightning rail engine.

"That's why I always save the drink for after the contest, mate. But, if you still wanna have a go..."

Gunnar cracks his knuckles.
Feb 10, 2022 11:10 am
"Why you diminu... diminu... short, you're short!" Mrak tries to sit on a barstool and slips off of it. He falls to his knees, drops his head and throws up on the floor. "Fight you... I'll fight you." he gasps.
Feb 10, 2022 12:17 pm
Alin deftly side steps the vomit There is truly nothing worse than orc vomit they think. They grimace painfully as a little bit spatters on their boots.
Alin moves to the bar and corners Sigmund and says aloud "I see you have your hands full, and they just got fuller, but I would like to talk to you about what you were serving us earlier. It doesn’t seem to have agreed with my stomach."
Simultaneously, Alin’s fingers tap and slide on the bar top. Alin is using basic thieves cant, not knowing the specific lingo of Stormreach as much as that of Sharn "What meaning [of] hidden [secret] message [note] [plural]"

"Should help you sober up a little, if you want."
Feb 10, 2022 7:28 pm
"Thanks, I guess." Mrak grabs the mug and downs it in one gulp. He belches and for a moment his eyes cross. He seems a little steadier, but not much. "Guess I’ll be going then. No reason to stick around here if there’s not going to be any action. Might as well go somewhere less reputable and try and pick a fight."

Alin looks quizzically at the stranger who was just vomiting on the floor moments ago, then raises and eyebrow toward Sigmund. "I believe my story is currently being written, stranger. I follow an unknown road."
Alin steps back from the bar and wipes their hands on their pants in a futile attempt to remove the bar top residue. "Take this as you may, but my friends have apparently arranged for rooms at this fine establishment, and I have business to attend to in my room. Perhaps you follow the unknown road as well and follow me?"
Feb 12, 2022 5:07 pm
Gunnar will sit down beside Kevin, marvelling at the metal cat. He puts his buckets down to give the cat a scratch behind the ears. "What a good cat! What's your name?"

To Kevin, he says: "This is quite the creation! How'd learn how to build things of such beauty?"

I'm not done with it yet. I have worked on numerous warforged and mechanical guardians, so this one is just an extension of that. If I heat the bronze just right and let it cool in a bed of metal shavings, it will turn blue. I have done the face, but still have a lot to do.

Kevin thinks a bit. I have never giving it a name. Its connected to me through magic, so I don't have to speak to it. Never got a name

Ghillie inspected the metal cat. His distaste for inorganic beings surfaced but he sublimated it by admiring the skill and fluidity in its construction.

"Fine craftsmanship, Kevin. Quite lifelike, and take that as a great compliment from one such as I. Perhaps it could be named Cougar or Pantera."
Feb 16, 2022 12:45 am
"Ah, that's the thing about a name. Only the creator knows the whole story of their creation, so only the creator can give a thing it's true name. Where were you when you first thought to make such an incredible thing? What were you doing? What inspired you?"

"No shame in struggling with a name. Think on it a bit, there's no rush. It took my grandfather 150 years to name his axe! Sometimes it becomes obvious with time."

"Well, one fine day, while I was still just a twinkle in me Ma's eye, Grandpappy was leading a brigade to reinforce a seige on a daelkyr stronghold."

"Unfortunately he arrived a day late. The commander of the host, some dimwit Soldorak wizard, said they had missed their chance, for the prophecy foretold of the fortress's fall under a full moons light, and that had come and gone."

"So Grandpappy stood atop the battlements, dropped his pants and bent over, displaying his fine hairy arse to the enemy crying 'Here's yer bloody full moon!' And then, with every dwarf cheering, he led the entire host to battle against the fortress."

"And so he named his axe that day: Fuldmåne! In the common tongue, Full Moon!"

Gunnar draws out the axe to show anyone who is looking, for it is Gunnar who now wields Fuldmåne.

That is a fantastic name He whipes his eyes.

What inspired me? To tell the truth, when I saw a real panther in a zoo, I was fascinated. Its speed and ferocity actually scared me - gave me a healthy respect for the creature. All in our squad had a standard blade-dog, but I gradually changed its frame to this. The tail is a fantastic counterbalance... Kevin is about to start on a nerd-fueled rant about his creation but stops himself.

The barmaid that came before ushers Mrak and Alin to the room, which is a decently-sized common area with 3 sturdy bunks (6 beds available), and some footlockers and dressers with locks.

She says, "Next time I give you clandestine instructions, I suggest you follow them to a tee; otherwise, you run the risk of exposure, which is not good for us. We paid you for some discretion.

"Now, forgive me for being so abrupt; I just expected more direct obedience from those that we feed information and funds to. Anyways, this document contains all of the instructions for the current job. You remember the terms of your hiring, and obviously, Mrak, you were not originally hired, but you're part of this group now, unless you would prefer to bleed out in an alley somewhere.

"This document has further details. Choose your actions and your words carefully."

HeroAmongMen sent a note to XOSkel10
As she walks out the door, she says, "Please make sure to destroy that in fire before you leave this room."

The document has the following information on it:
[ +- ] Document from Tyrants
Feb 16, 2022 6:07 pm
"You all work for the Tyrants eh?" Mrak suddenly looks a lot more sober. "Sounds exciting. Need another sword?"
Feb 16, 2022 6:27 pm
Ghillie laughed heartily at Gunnar's story.

"A fine name. I'm glad there were no lycans nearby when that happened."

The druid sized up Mrak before the barmaid's information made him raise a bushy eyebrow.

"A good sword is always appreciated. Welcome, Mrak. I'm Ghillie Dhu."
Feb 17, 2022 1:11 pm
"I personally have worked with the Tyrants before, but saying we work for them it’s a bit too much for my taste. They are not the worst of the power brokers in Sharn. I probably would rank the Sharn city watch as more untrustworthy than the Tyrants." Alin scratches their chin.
"Of course that barmaid is a changeling and a Tyrant agent, not that it matters. I can’t say I liked the tone of their voice… obedience is a word I never use personally, except perhaps if I had a pet. I gave my word to do a job, so I will do it. But if I am treated like a dog, I will eventually bite the master." Alin re reads the note and then scribbles four unreadable "words" on a piece of paper, and shoves that into a bag. "The goals are clear enough, but ingratiating the Tyrants with a storm lord is a bit of an ask, perhaps the artifacts delivery will suffice."
Feb 17, 2022 9:18 pm
"If you're recruiting, I'll put my axe behind your cause. I can tell you lads will be a fun bunch."

"Arm wrestling champion was really just an in-between gig. I trust in the Sovereign Host to put us on the right path, and I think they're speaking to me right now."

Feb 18, 2022 12:17 am
"I'm confused, and realize I may be being rude. As you heard, I'm called Mrak. My people come from the land you southerners call The Demon Wastes. I won't bore you with a long tale just now, but needless to say I've traveled from the Wastes, through the Eldeen Reaches, Droaam and Breland, and now here to Stormreach. I currently find myself without a cause worthy of my sword. You seem like heroic folk, and I'm comforted to know you don't actually work for the Tyrants. Like Gunner I'll put my faith in the notion that you all may be what I've been waiting here for."

You, as players, know the mission parameters. It took a bit of time to travel between Sharn and Stormreach, so the note acts a reminder of your priorities, as well as the last known location of the person.

So, what are you doing? Are you all going to rest, or head out immediately to investigate?
Feb 19, 2022 6:26 pm
"Let's head out!"

Gunnar slams his bucket back, drains it, and then slams down on the table. As he wipes the foam from his beard, he declares:

"Just gotta take a piss first."

"I’ve got to get my gear. Meet you back here in ten minutes." Mrak heads back out to get his kit.
Feb 19, 2022 8:01 pm
"But the room is free..." Ghullie lamented. "A night on land in a comfy bed before we head out can't hurt."

The druid may love the natural world but the luxury of a soft bed held a strong allure for him.

Alin holds the note over a candle until it begins to burn "We could do some light reconnaissance tonight, but we shouldn’t plan on any close interactions perhaps until everyone has slept off their libations?" Alin let’s the note burn close to their fingers, then tosses it into the hearth.

"Ghillie my friend, I also wish to spend the night in a bed that is not swaying with the sea." Alin then muses more quietly "Some warm company in bed would also do me good. Our Tyrant contact is intriguing but seems a little prickly. Perhaps we’ll find someone in the Embers district."

As you all walk into the Embers section of the Oldgate district, the flavor of the region is very human, as opposed to other areas where there is evidence of racial diversity.

You see a few men in the streets with heavy armor, with shields and armor carrying motifs of a red flame. They eye you, but do nothing more than keep an eye on you as you walk by.

As the sun starts to brighten the area around you (it's probably around 5 am now), a building that draws your attention, the sign of on the outside indicating that it is called The Candlelight.

You all see two of these heavily-armored guards posted on either side of the large double-doors to this place.
Mar 4, 2022 10:38 pm
"I could use a drink," Gunnar says, pointing at the The Candlelight.

"With all these Silver Flame folks about, I'm surprised we even found a pub. It is a pub, innit? Looks like the kind of place that charges twice as much for a drink that is thrice watered down. Ah, but maybe I shouldn't judge a pub by its neighborhood. Might be if I were Thranish and had all these zealots running about I might need a drink strong enough to make a Troll go blind!"

A drink sounds good. says Mrak, and he strides towards the guards at the door. Ho there, I'd like to go in and get a drink.
Mar 5, 2022 8:08 pm
"Perhaps a mushroom beer," Ghillie said as he followed.
Mar 5, 2022 8:21 pm
Don't get your hopes up old man. Mushroom beer is not a common drink. But, sure lets see what they have.

One of these templars of the Silver Flame says, "No drinks here. Just a private Silver Flame party.

Now, run along, dearies, 'afore I get testy."
He grabs the hilt of his longsword strapped to his waist, and the other gives an wicked eye in your direction.

The one who hasn't spoken yet squints his eyes, focuses a bit towards Kevin, and says, "Look, Arf. A shifter! Here, shifter! Why don't you come on in now?"

He pushes the one of the double doors open a bit. "You're welcome into this party."

Mar 7, 2022 9:11 pm
Mrak steps closer to the templars. You looking to start trouble?
Mar 7, 2022 9:54 pm
The templar who grabbed the hilt of his sword says, "Orc, this is none of your concern. Move along."

The other one steps closer and says, "Oh, we aren't starting any trouble, sir. Perhaps you should join your shifter friend inside. I am sure we can accomodate the both of you."
Mar 7, 2022 11:04 pm
"Let's move along. There are other establishments," Ghillie suggested. "Leave the Purified to their revels."
Mar 7, 2022 11:07 pm
"Afraid you can't handle this party, leshy?"
Mar 7, 2022 11:25 pm
"At my age, son, I'm sure I cannot," Ghillie said with a mocking chuckle. "You boys enjoy yourselves, though, and may you live to get old."

Mrak causally rests his hand on the pommel of his sword.

Gunnar catches up after excused himself to take another leak in a back alley (drinking a bucket if anything will do that to you). Stumbling forth and slurring his words, he looks considerably more drunk than before.

"Once you break the seal, the flood gates are open, know what I mean? Hey, what's this walking tin can saying about a party? I am always interested in a party! Tell me, tin can, any shifters inside there with you right now?"

Gunnar steps towards the door and throws it open to let in the light of day.

The templars are pissed, but after looking around, they say, "Well, that wasn't as fun as we had with this guy. Hope you have more fun."

They all (followers and templars) sheath their weapons, tuck their tails between their legs (so to speak, since they aren't shifters), and they walk back down the hallway, in the same direction that the cleric walked.

You are left alone in this building, which upon further inspection isn't a tavern so much as a dessert hall (the large menu inside has nothing but desserts, and there is no bar here), but these fools came in here with a keg of crude, nasty ale.
Mar 12, 2022 12:49 pm
This strange creature is still pinned to the wall. You can tell that he is a changeling, but has some different physiological features. Upon closer look at the topless, pinned person, you can see that he has what looks like fish gills in his chest. His hands are bleeding different colored blood, and he is nailed to the wall with 10-penny nails. His feet are on the ground, so the stigmata in his palms have not torn from his weight, but you can tell that he is in excruciating pain. He also looks severely dehydrated, and beaten.

He looks up at you briefly, says "thank...you..." weakly, and then his head drops, and his legs buckle, and his body sags down from where he is nailed to the wall.
Mar 12, 2022 7:24 pm
Alin quickly picks up the person to take the weight off of the nails. "Does anyone have some tools to extract this poor soul?"

As you look about, you do see some alleys that may allow you to hide or travel discretely from here.

The group navigates an alley, and it seems to turn left, then right, then right, then left. It feels as though the alley is more labyrinthian than it seemed at first, and after about 10 or 15 minutes of traveling down, you don't hear the voices behind you, but you also don't know where you are. You realize pretty quickly, also, that the alley is now a tunnel that traverses down under the city.

The tunnel is huge, big enough to fit a giant, and the architecture changes from what you know to be Thranish human style to something that you haven't seen before (but what Kevin figures is from the Cul'sir era). It is too dark, so those without darkvision would need to have some sort of light source. You also start to notice that the way up ahead of where you are is flooded (probably knee-high water from what you can tell).

The druid's eyes briefly glowed green as his vision slipped beyond the normal range and he scanned the area. You wade into the water, and it remains about waste-deep. You travel for about 15 minutes, turning left and right at various intervals, until you arrive at a cavern opening. The path comes up out of the water, and you find yourselves in a huge cavern, probably 60 feet high and 120 feet wide.

The walls have ornate carvings, looking almost like the faces of our world's babylonian reliefs and statues.

https://www.thevintagenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/pjimage-5-1-640x344.jpg

Upon inspection, you see puddles of water, some 10 feet in diameter, interspersed randomly around the place.

The darkness seems to extend beyond the reach of the everbright lantern as you walk slowly forward.

Those of you with a result higher than 18 (and Ghillie, who can reasonably interpret the results using his background feature) ascertain that this is a historical depiction of the generations of the Giant civilization.

Those of you who speak Giant can recognize some of the letters on the walls, but Ghillie knows that this is very old Giant language, which, at the start of this cavern, is not discernible. As you progress in the cavern, it is as if you are witnessing the transformation of the Giant language over the millenia, as it becomes more readable. You are able to read some names, such as Cul'sir Dagon, Cul'sir Fay-shont, and some of the names are scratched out or worn out by time.

You also a circle with relief profiles of 5 different fire giants, each facial profile surrounded by a shape resembling an element: Declant Su'lat (fire), Fallon Su'lat (water), Saren Su'lat (rock), Cortyr Su'lat (air), and Rawtha Su'lat (something whispy, but you cannot figure out what element this is).

You also start to notice the puddles not just into the floor of this cavern, but you see the puddles along the walls now, and along the ceiling.

Yes, defying gravity. Exactly.

It’s bizarre.
Gunnar with stone cunning would know that these runes and carvings are from many thousands of years ago.

As you continue walking, you see a large platform against the far wall of the cavern, which you now see.

The platform looks like the platform from the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the carvings culminate and ultimately point the person following them to the platform.

Atop the platform is a 2 inch ball of Mithral, embedded with red, blue, and green dragonshard bits.

The ball sits in an indentation in the platform, seemingly designed to hold it.

There is one mechanism that you can see, to the left of the platform, and upon further investigation you determine there to be a lever that can be pulled from the wall. You also realize that the geometric-designed relief behind the platform actually is a massive door, and Kevin surmises it is too big even for the brutish figures in his group to push or pull open.

The puddles begin to shimmer, and those trained in Nature all at the same time realize that the moon Kythri is overhead this night. Yes, you realize that this seems like a manifest zone to Kythri, but what is strange to you is that you have never heard of such a focused location for a manifest zone (typically, they span a larger area of land or space).

You notice on the edgings of the wall that the geometric shapes may indicate something to do with the phases of the moons orbiting Eberron. Tonight, Kythri is full only, with other moons at various lunar phases tonight.

Those facts don't necessarily account for why it seems like the manifest zone is focused specifically in this chamber, but that could be something to explore after this dangerous circumstance.

Two of the red slaads run along the ceiling towards opposite walls, and then they use their claws to leverage themselves along the walls. They start to "climb" downward towards the floor to you all.

They get to about 30 feet, and though the psychic blades do not hit, and neither does Mrak's javelin, Gunnar sticks one with his javelin, and it sits in his back as he continue to try to climb the wall downwards towards you.

Strangely, two of the puddles on the walls (one next to each of the slaadi crawling down the walls) aligns underneath the slaadi, and once parallel and aligned, they emit a strange green beam that causes the slaadi to float towards the middle of the cavern, outside their control.
OOC:

The restrained slaad above grins, and croaks a horrible bellowing sound as his red skin starts to rip. In a grotesque manner, the skin breaks and explodes like a melon with too much pressure, and flies off of the red slaad, and from the nasty gooey remains emerges a green slaad.

In your minds you hear, I have awaited this for decades. Floating fools, consume them!

The red slaadi float helplessly above you, but attempt to swim in the air closer to you, unsuccessfully.

After some working on the mechanism, you are able to pry the lever out of the wall and pull it, and the hatch starts opening a 10-foot by 10-foot section of the back wall (not the wall that the slaadi are crawling down). The door creaks open slowly and continuously, and as you wait, several of you leverage your attacks against the toad-like slaads attempting to get you all.

Gunnar and Mrak miss their targets, and these two heroes swing at the exact moment of a weird disturbance in the floating gravity field that somehow has grabbed the two enemy creatures.

Ghillie utilizes his fungal spores in a strange way, and Alin leverages some devastating attacks on one of the red slaadi.

Both red slaadi attempt to hit our heroes; they can't quite reach the heroes with their maws, but their claws are able. Gunnar gets hit twice (taking 14 slashing damage), and Mrak gets hit once by sharp dark claws (taking 4 slashing damage)

As they attempt their attacks, Kevin launches a very effective attack on one of them.

The green slaad throws some flames at Alin, seeing the effectiveness of the rogue, and hits him once (delivering 7 fire damage).

Raelyn tries again to pry the door open more, and he squeezes through the door, just barely, but scratches his stomach as he squeezes through.

The slaad's claw scrapes Mrak's forearm. He looks at the trickle of blood that wells up and grins. He pulls an amulet shaped like a flame made of some sort of red crystal from under his arm. Kevin pulls a sister lever on this side of the wall, and the door closes behind you, and this space is pitch black, a circular-shaped tunnel, 10 feet in diameter. You follow for a bit, and the sphere that Raelyn is holding glows. Strangely, Raelyn is speaking as if he hears and is talking with someone.

"Where does this lead?"

"No, we can't go back to that region. I almost died there. The people are awful there."

"Can you lead us to the southern part of the city?"

"No, we cannot fly. Don't put us so high up."

Raelyn looks back to Alin: "Geez, this thing is incorrigible! Here, you talk to him."

Gunnar hasn't the faintest idea about what was going on with the pretty talking stone. That's fine by him - let the fancy-talkers sort it out.

In the meantime, everyone seems a little distracted so he decides to inspect the door to make sure it's properly sealed behind them, and then scout out a ways down the tunnel to see what's ahead. He'll light a torch to do so - darkvision is fine in a pinch and great for not being noticed, but it's easy to miss a detail in the dark. Besides, the fancy-talkers are making enough racket to exclude the notion of stealth, and he still has these 10 bloody torches!

He had acquired these torches back in the war years ago- it was a standard issue pack - but had yet to crack 'em open. Just about every single mission they had gone on required cover of darkness, making the fire sticks pretty much useless.

He reflected that every single member of the Howlers were alive when he was given these torches, but now he was the only one. Each of the Howlers burned bright against the dark and extinguished in a blaze of glory. All except Gunnar. He'd like to say it was he was the biggest or toughest or smartest of the Howlers, but it wasn't true. Luckiest? Maybe.

He unwrapped the bundle and smelled the pine wood, felled from the forests of his homeland. Deciding he was being entirely too sentimental, he blamed the mushroom beer with a curse under his breath, lit a torch, and wandered into the dark tunnel, alone.

Perhaps they were relying solely on your ability to appear non descript.…did anyone sending you on this mission know the persona you chose? OOC:
I can try Pass Without Trace for a +10 bonus to all our Stealth checks.

Alin opens the door again and slips out into the bar, they don’t close the door completely so the others can hear. Alin will try to gently get a bartenders attention, by stepping into view and showing empty hands, both raised to chest level.

"Excuse me, I know my appearance is a bit of a surprise, but my friends and I have found ourselves magicked into your fine establishment to our shock. I do beg your pardon and ask that no ruckus be raised. We would like to purchase some drinks and then be on our way if that is amenable?". Alin smiles meekly looking the bartender in the eyes.

Gunnar listens in from behind cover in case Alin's negotiations turn hostile, but he sees that he has the situation under control.

"Wow, Alin is smooth. He could sell a glass of water to a drowning man."
Apr 15, 2022 8:30 pm
The elf bartender looks at Alin and says, "Well, I wasn't aware of House Orien operating out of our pantry, but by all means, please walk out. No problems here."

She smiles and waves towards the exit, and then goes back to serving her patrons at the bar. They look at the lot of you funny, but you all leave without issues. When you walk out, it is midday, and you find yourselves stepping out of the Chapterhouse in the Marketplace district.
Apr 15, 2022 8:44 pm
Before they head out, Ghillie asked Raelyn, "Can you shift into a human or elf or some other form yet? The tablecloth itself is suspicious."

Ghillie nodded to the bartenders and patrons as he walked proudly past them. No sense in rushing by and lowering his head. Once outside, he said, "We'd best find some clothes for this one soon. Is that a bazaar?"

If the others agreed, that's where the druid would head to find cheap attire for Raelyn.
Apr 15, 2022 11:25 pm
"We should get our friend here something more than a gunny sack to wear, I have a Galifar or two to spend for some decent clothes".
Apr 16, 2022 11:11 am
Once Raelyn is propperly dressed Kevin has to ask. Raelyn, I have to know. Since you got this assignment, what happened? You had the artifice, the two-finger ringed, and then what happened?
Apr 16, 2022 8:59 pm
Gunnar tries to wrap his bearskin cloak around the changeling with little success. "There, that'll draw a lot less attention! No no, that's just what bears smell like on the inside, you'll get used to it. Okay okay, keep you tablecloth then!"
Apr 18, 2022 3:54 pm
You all track down some simple clothing, and Raelyn finds a discrete corner and dresses himself.

With regular clothing on, he seems like a normal Khoravar, with the way he has shifted at this point.
OOC:
It cost a couple of coppers for the clothes.
Raelyn walks up to Alin and says, "Thanks for the clothes, brother," and he slips a few coppers into the changeling's hand.

I'm at a loss here. I am pressing Raelyn for more information ingame and the GM is hinting that there are something we are missing.
I don't know what else I can do. I must be missing something somewhere

OOC:
I will respond to the questions posed to Raelyn shortly (I have demanding work at this point, so it takes time to post a thoughtful, descriptive post).

That being said, I rolled Wisdom (Insight) checks for the lot of you, in order to determine what your characters may have figured out by interacting with Raelyn. Those who have little private blurbs have intuited some things, based on who succeeded on those rolls.

I apologize that this feels like you are missing details; you are not.

Players are not receiving the same sensory stimulus that characters do in this world; just so you are all aware, I roll Wisdom (Insight) checks on behalf of your characters from time to time, in order to simulate the context that characters in a world would have that you, as players, may not have.

I will respond to your questions in short order, I promise.

Alin discreetly drops the coppers into a pile of refuse on the street and wipes their hands, not wanting to think about where Raelyn had the coins stashed on his naked body.

"What now?" Mrak wonders?
Apr 18, 2022 9:50 pm
"It's been quite a day! I forget, what were y'all coming into town for anyway? We seemed to get a little sidetracked." He directs this question to Kevin, Alin, and Ghillie.
Apr 18, 2022 10:22 pm
"A little but Life is a winding river that always leads to Death," he mused. "Where're you staying, Raelyn? We'd best get your things before thinking about the zealots who hurt you and stole the ring."
Apr 18, 2022 10:24 pm
Mrak turns his attention to Ghillie. "You all have spoken about some kind of artifact. Is this ring the artifact? What does it do?"

You all lead Raelyn back to the docks, to the Wavecrest Tavern.

Once he enters, he walks up to the bar and asks for a mushroom beer, no fizz. He sits at the bar.
Apr 18, 2022 11:08 pm
The barmaid walks up, taps Raelyn on the shoulder, and he walks to the back, and then she looks to you to follow.

You all come into your room, and there is a chair in the middle of the room, and the barmaid points to it and says, "Sit, Raelyn. We have much to discuss and debrief on."

She looks to you all and says, "Thank you for bringing him back for questioning. You are welcome to question him with me, as I assume you haven't had much time to complete the full mission parameters; we can continue the mission after we get our intel."
Apr 18, 2022 11:10 pm
Ghillie grabbed a mushroom beer with extra foam and listened intently to the changeling's story.
Apr 18, 2022 11:29 pm
Raelyn sits in the chair and says, "Well, I went to the Oldgate District to meet with an agent of Lord Lassite, since the Tyrants were requesting that I meet with Varen Lassite. I was told to meet in the Chapterhouse in the wee hours of the night, but as I walked over in a human form, I was accosted by some other humans, bearing some kind of device or holy symbol. The leader of the group pointed it towards me as I was walking to the tavern, and some men came up from behind me and in front of me, bagged my head and clubbed me.

"When I came to, I had awoken in a dark room, chained, naked, to a strange apparatus. Periodically they would bring me upstairs and abuse me.

"On one night, they became more drunk and unstable than usual. They nailed me to the wall, and were about to flay my skin, when you all happened to walk up to the place that they had me. I am very grateful that you saved me."

Apr 18, 2022 11:54 pm
Alin adds Those that had Raeyln were of the Silver flame. It sounds like they have a device that can detect changelings, or they could detect the gift for Lassite that Raelyn was carrying." Alin straightens their tunic. "We fought them off before we knew that they had taken the gift."

The barmaid holds her chin with her left hand and says, looking at the lot of you, "Hmmm. And where is the holdout for these Silver Flame folks? Do you know if they are counter to our objectives of creating a presence in this city?

"I wonder if you could help us out further. We could pay you extra, as well as make sure you have a safe place to lay your head and rest in this city. But we need to know more about what's going on with these Silver Flame idiots, and if the Storm Lord is in actual danger.

"Also, recovering the artifact and bringing it to Lord Lassite would be a bonus.

"What are your terms for continued assistance?"
Apr 19, 2022 8:20 pm
Mrak shrugs and looks to Alin.
Apr 19, 2022 9:07 pm
"Depends. I didn't come here to throw down with the Church. I'd like to know exactly what it is we're trying to recover and why it's so important to Lord Lassie," he said and at chuckled at the off-colour joke.

"I am also interested in specifics of the artifact, delivering this to Lassite is part of our current agreement, not a bonus. I intend to fulfill that, I do not break contracts." Alin looks at the others "Involvement of a church is a complication, but none more than crossing paths with a house or some other organization. If our new friends don’t want to risk the ire of the silver flame, I can understand that completely."
Alin returns their attention to the barmaid. "I suspect that we will find information about these zealots and their intent as we take back the artifact. You have my permission and gratitude if you are willing to compensate us for any useful information we gather." Alin winks blatantly at the barmaid to elicit a reaction from the others and relieve the tension.

Ghillie raised a bushy eyebrow.
Apr 20, 2022 6:05 am
Gunnar struggles to get a word in edgewise, so he tries broadwise.

"And barmaid, if you could get me another mushroom beer, that would be swell. Just when you get a chance'll be fine."
Apr 20, 2022 6:40 am
The Silverflame fanatics counter everybody's interest. Grunts Kevin.
But like Ghillie, I'm not interested in confronting them. It could have far-reaching consequences for shifter-kind.
OOC:
Quick meta-question, is the plot to break into a silverflame stronghold? If so Kevin will go along. But if not, he is more inclined to quit while he is ahead, as he thinks these James Bond wannabe's are idiots
Apr 20, 2022 12:21 pm
OOC:
The plot is open to you. On this particular quest, the Tyrants do not know if the Silver Flame fanatics are actually targeting them, targeting agents of Lassite, or are just fanatical and this course of violence against Raelyn was unrelated to the Tyrants’ interests.

She is saying that in terms of the prior contract, she is considering the contract complete. She is asking to rehire you to help investigate, but you could just as easily go your separate ways.

The investigation could be handled any way you want: you could capture and interrogate someone, you could break in and sneak around, you could try to speak with the Lassites (or someone else you may be connected to), or you could try even something else that I haven’t detailed. The game is whatever you want it to be, and I will do what I can to steer the ship into a direction that you will enjoy.

If you’re not interested in this particular mission, you could go exploring the city. The city is not huge on the surface, but there is lots to do, and you all are also in possession of that docent thing. I want you guys to do what you want. I have plenty of quest ideas, so if you don’t want to deal with religious fanatics, we can move to another quest theme.
Apr 20, 2022 1:03 pm
I don't know about you guys, but I am fare more interested it was is going on below the city than what is going on with the Silverflame

"Flaming Silver Flame," Ghillie growled. "I always preferred the Undying Court anyhow."
Apr 21, 2022 3:52 pm
The barmaid makes a sad face, and then says, "That's fine; I can understand your desire to not deal with those fanatics.

"Well, I think you need to work with Sigmund to determine how long you can stay here on your friend's recommendation. I will take Raelyn and figure out more information, and rehabilitate him a bit.

I bid you adieu."
She tilts her head towards the door and looks at Raelyn, and he slinks out of the room, followed by the barmaid.
OOC:
Alright, you can investigate the tunnels and such as you desire. Interacting with Krinn may be a good way to direct you.

Let's level up to 5th level, and then we will proceed. Please level up on DNDBeyond, and let me know in the OOC forum when your character is leveled and ready.

I don't feel like roleplaying the interaction with Sigmund, but he indicates that you all can stay freely in his spare rooms for another 7 days.
